Reviews for Zimmerman Marine - Deltaville
Professional work at reasonable price, 2017-08-13
Captain: , Cape Canaveral (1191)

Pleased with two earlier projects by ZMI Southport, I had ZMI Deltaville remove and re-bed seven portholes on my 1996 Krogen Express. They started work on the date promised, removed portholes quickly despite original factory bedding of 3M 5200, and completed the work professionally. ZMI kept the interior of the boat clean, materials and tools organized on a small pad at the end of each day, work area vacuumed, and touched nothing else. The cost was less than expected and communication was great. We%u2019re very happy.

Called for an estimate... BUT..., 2017-07-18
Captain: , Newport Beach, CA (420)

We brought our boat to the East Coast from Seattle. Over the course of the 4-year trip, we've been in several boatyards in both the USA and Mexico. We're now in Baltimore and plan to leave the boat for several weeks, so I decided this would be a good opportunity to get some long postponed fiberglass work completed. I first wrote Ian at Zimmerman's in MD requesting an estimate. I then spoke with Ian to explain the work and other items on my yard list. After 15 days or so, I received a call from Ian to clarify a minor point and he said that he was getting ready to send my estimate. Three days later, no info, so I called and left a message that I hadn't received the estimate... still no response.
I then requested the same work from Deltaville Zimmerman's, I received an almost immediate email from Andy stating that he had spoken with Ian and that I'd be getting an estimate soon. More than a week later, I called Andy and left a message that I still didn't have the estimate. He called back saying that it appeared that I was shopping the work and that they weren't interested in competing on price. I assured him that I wasn't shopping the work, only that I was attempting to get an honest quote from a reputable boatyard. Also, that my last boatyard work was completed at Atlantic Yacht Basin and while I was pleased with their work, I didn't really want to transit the entire bay to get the work done. TWO weeks later, still no response.
Now, I'm planning on heading south to get the work completed at a yard that I trust. BTW, I only contacted these two Zimmerman's...
Sorry Zimmerman's... even the courtesy of a return call or a reasonable response goes a long way to customer satisfaction. No response to a legitimate request for an estimate is totally unacceptable.

F/U... shortly after my review, I heard from Steve Zimmerman voicing his concern. I appreciate his both his comments and his professionalism.

Management response:
Unfortunately I have to agree with Mr. Hunter...our responsiveness to his request for service was poor and inexcusable. Even when a manager is struggling to keep up with service requests, a return call to say we haven't forgotten about you can be made.

We earned this 1 star review and will use it to remind everyone at ZMI about the importance of prompt communication. To Mr. Hunter I offer my sincere apology for our poor responsiveness.

Fantastic Service & Reasonable Rates, 2017-06-24
Captain: , Bristol, ri (20)

We discovered a broken engine mount up the Chesapeake. Carefully sailed down to Zimmerman's which fit us in to their schedule with very short notice. They fixed the mount, solved a few other problems - including a quick haul for aligning the propellor shaft, lent us their yard car, had great facilities for showers and laundry, and helped us to repair a few things ourselves. Each person seemed nicer and more skilled than the last. They even had a lower cost technician do the slow painful work of drilling out the mount's frozen bolts under supervision of their experts. We were at the yard for a week and hated to leave. Would go back in a heat beat.

Replace Cutless bearing, Replace Rig, Paint bottom, 2017-05-23
Captain: , Urbanna, VA (10)

Went in to replace the Cutless bearing, when bearing was pulled, the shaft sprung to top of strut. Next we needed to align the shaft, found shaft all chewed up, packing gland falling apart, replaced shaft, new packing gland, motor aligned. Pulled the mast to replace the standing rigging, then decided to rewire mast and add new wind insturment. We checked the rudder and found corrosion around the base of the tube, new rudder needed. I felt like Adam was checking his own boat and he would ask me what I wanted to do every time we found something. Most of the work was preformed by Mike, his attention to detail and pride in workmanship showed on every job he touched. Bob did all the electiral work and all I can say is what a top notch technician he is. The rigging was done by Bay Area Rigging, this is the second boat they have done for me and again, what a great group to work with. Like all boat projects, I found my boat had not been cared for as much as I would have hoped, but the folks ath Zimmerman's Deltaville did the work better than I would have. I would not hesitate to send anyone to Zimmerman's to have work done. They treated me like brother and I will be back for future projects.

Experiences from a major set of projects..., 2017-01-11
Captain: , MV Red Head (61833)

Our experience with Zimmermans was out-of-this-world great. We bought Red Head through their buyer program and it was the smartest thing we've ever done in boating. The benefits received are ongoing. But my review is going to center on the actual service work done. Message me if you want more info about the purchase program.

Red Head was brought to the Zimmerman yard directly after purchase and stayed for 3 full months of nearly full-time projects. The planning and scheduling was all done to meet our October 1st deadline and we untied the lines and were able to leave on that day.

I think the major experiences happen at boat yards through the actual techs and mechanics doing the work. Zimmermans is blessed to have caring, qualified, and experienced people. There were so many projects ticked off our spreadsheets that a review would be too long to document them all. Instead, I want to comment on the three main people who worked on our boat.

Chad is an engine superstar. Your boat gains extra life just by having him on the boat, looking around. His experience and skills are the best I've seen. He is a walking reference about anything with engines. He brought our two CAT 3208's and two Northern Lights generators back to proper spec, replacing nearly everything that needed to come out. With so many gaskets replaced, it wasn't a surprise when one developed a slow drip after the first 100 miles. That put Chad in a car to drive to the marina we were at to replace the gasket and test it. Now with 1,000 miles more on the engines, the drip is gone.

Caleb is a creative mechanical expert. I'm sure he doesn't think of himself as creative but he has a wonderful skill of analyzing a problem, figuring out an innovative solution, and implementing it right the first time. We challenged him with a few major problems - rebuilding/replacing the entire fuel system, creating better bilge systems, and a host of other fixes - hydraulic fitting/hose replacement, welding, and more. There were a few times when I found Caleb sitting in the engine room with a pad and just thinking. Those were magical times because the results of that created some of the best solutions to complex problems I've ever seen. Caleb's solutions were much better than the original plans we thought would work. Caleb is welcome to sit and think about things in my engine room, any time.

Bob is the best marine tech I've ever met. That's a big claim but it's true. Bob has some cruising and liveaboard experience and would often challenge the things we thought we wanted, suggesting alternatives or better ways to attack a problem. Bob found some latent issues outside the project plan. His full understanding of the issues provided us with great information and plans of attack. Bob rebuilt much of the electrical panels and basic electrical system - batteries, inverters, monitors, and other large electrical issues, along with installation of new windlasses. In all cases, instead of just doing the project, he went the extra step of making sure we understood all the alternatives and how they would affect our use of the boat. That personal boating experience laid on top of the ability to do quality work is unique and gives an extra level of usefulness that we now enjoy daily. Doing the projects would have made Red Head better. But through Bob's thorough consultation, the benefits exceed our expectations.

The Deltaville team has been wonderful in helping me with questions and providing help long after we left the yard. That feeling of having someone interested in helping even without being there makes us want to go back for more projects. Having the work done right the first time puts this yard on our yearly stops forevermore. These guys feel like more than mechanics. They're friends.

Quality work done by a super staff, 2016-11-10
Captain: , Mystic, CT (80)

We had extensive repairs done here. We couldn't be more pleased by the knowledge and quality of service of the staff. Led by Adam, they had a breadth of expertise and delivered in a timely and efficient fashion. Highly recommended!

Comprehensive service, 2016-10-24
Captain: , Windsor, Ontario Canada (10)

Made arrangements to leave the American Tug 41 over the summer and returned home. I had a long list of tasks including regular engine maintenance, VHF installation problems, gelcoat repairs, line cutter installation, etc.
I asked them to go over the boat and let me know if there was anything I had missed. They spotted a number of potential problems including a deteriorating fuel line and an exhaust leak.
Very easy to work with even though I was 500 miles away. They emailed photos of all the issues and completed work.
Knowledgeable and professional.

Quality but, 2016-08-08
Captain: , Charleston, SC (364)

Update to earlier review below.
One of the thruster controls failed. I called Adam and asked if work could be done in Southport yard and he immediately called and technician was sent from Southport to my boat to replace the defective control. I was prepared to take boat to yard but was saved a three day round trip. IMO this level of service was above and beyond normal expectations.

I recently had two major projects ( bow and stern thrusters and major electronics update ) plus the normal lists of unexpected smaller items discovered after haul out completed at Zimmerman Deltaville..
I selected Zimmerman based on AC reviews and their assurances that they had significant experience in both types projects with my particular boat ( 49 DeFever RPH ) and the type of products being installed ( Side Power thrusters and Simrad electronics).
Prior to arrival I received pre inspection parts and labor guesstimates for both projects excluding power supply for the thrusters. I also received a time estimate of four weeks for completion.
After two weeks in yard ( and three holes in bottom ) I received an updated estimate on thrusters only ( excluding power supply ) in which labor costs were 50% higher.
I can not complain about cost of power supply since I did not receive an estimate but it was much higher than expected. The coast of the several smaller projects were in my view reasonable.
However, the labor cost on both of the larger projects exceeded the original estimate by approximately 50%. The primary reasons given ( thrusters - lack of room under PH instrument panel to install control; electronics - Simrad is more difficult install than Garmin ) do not justify the additional expense in my view.
Additionally the project took six weeks in instead of four to complete.
I am satisfied with quality of work but believe control of the project was lost and communication with customer lacked.

Management response:
Mr, Walton certainly has valid reasons to express some disappointment. This was a challenging project, with initial guestimates prepared sight unseen. Upon arrival we reviewed the work and prepared actual estimates. Additionally, the scope of work changed considerably. As a result, the costs and timing changed considerably.

Nonetheless, we could have done a better job keeping Mr. Walton informed. As he correctly points out, customer communication is critical and we should have done better.

Very nice customer!

major work and world class response, 2016-07-17
Captain: , ORIENTAL (70)

We recently purchased our dream trawler and selected Zimmerman Marine to do the majority of the after survey work. upon inspecting the main drive shaft, we discovered that it was badly corroded. Zimmerman immediately arranged for a new shaft to be built, along with new couplings and earings. Adam Sadeg communicated every step of the way and there were no surprises. In addition, we flushed the air conditioning lines, had fiberglass work done to repair the rub rail, removed our outriggers, serviced the crane, and serviced the auxiliary generator heat exchanger system. Several other minor items were performed concurrently.

we were of course on a tight timeline and the yard performed magic! we always felt as though we were important customers and were dealt with professionally and timely. I found everyone to be customer friendly, technically proficient, and communicative. you don't often find all three of these characteristics in a production environment. Steve Zimmerman overall and Adam at Deltaville, run a wonderful operation. Dee in the front office, Jeff and Lori in friberglass, technicians Wayne, Michael, Bob, and Caleb are all superb and rightfully proud of their operation. there was no question that was too dumb, or any request that was too hard. we appreciate their hard work and thank them for allowing us to realize our dream summer.

this is an easy five star review.

Book Well In Advance, 2016-05-14
Captain: , Southport Queensland (300)

Tried to book our Honda outboard in for a fuel problem and was told the wait was 6 to 8 weeks minimum. Suggested if I needed it fixed before then I should try Florida as it's slow there this time of year. I trust they were joking. No helpful advicce of where to go either.

Management response:
We also were disappointed that we could not take on this work in a timely manner. This came up during peak season and we felt an obligation to take care of prior commitments before taking on more work. We recommended another shop, but customer had already called them and they also were unable to respond.

We are very sorry that we could not be more responsive.

First rate!, 2015-10-23
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (118)

After having work done at their yard in Southport, we decided to stop here for additional service. Like Southport, these folks know how to deliver first class service at a fair price. I wish they had a yard closer to where we live in Florida. Thank you Adam and Chad!

We came back this week for additional service. I wish there was some way to give these folks six stars! I can't imagine what Adam, Chad and Caleb could have done to make this visit any better! These are the most professional service driven folks I've ever had the pleasure with whom to work. Caleb even agreed to stay and work on his project until 8:30 at night so we could leave with a great weather window the next morning. Zimmerman knows how to deliver quality service.

Excellent people, excellent work, 2015-05-13
Captain: , Louisiana (554)

I had just started the cruising season when a couple minor issues popped up. I called on a Friday to have the boat docked at their service dock on Sunday night. Wendy accessed my account from work that was done by another Zimmerman yard & had everything waiting for me Monday AM. Yard manager Adam shuffled his workers to have a technician on my boat by 9 AM Monday. Work was done quickly & professionally.
Very satisfied with my two experiences with Zimmerman.

Great Service & Value, 2014-10-01
Captain: , Stuart FL (778)

Hourly rates are somewhat more than other area yards but the work is well worth it! Have come back several years in succession. Work always is done right the first time and done in fewer hours so bottom line winds up less than similar work at other yards in the past. As noted below, everyone on staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and takes pride in quality work. Adam confers on every aspect of a job so there are no surprises with the bill. Just a top notch operation.

Excellent service and communication, 2014-08-12
Captain: , New Orleans, LA (671)

We had a mechanical failure on our trawler. Within half an hour of calling, they sent a tech to our marina in Deltaville to assess the problem and assist us in limping into their travelift sling. Throughout the repair, Adam kept us accurately and thoroughly informed of the progress. Their technician Wayne was knowledgable and we were impressed by his careful work and courtesy. The bill was well documented and reasonable, with no add-ons or surprises. They were very generous in allowing us to use their a yard truck (big red diesel F250!) for errands. We echo all that's been said in the previous glowing reviews.

!st Class Operation, 2014-07-07
Captain: , Lottsburg, Va (264)

We scheduled a visit in the fall of 2013 and left our GB in November. We had a modest list of what I'll term engine related routine maintenance and some gel coat repairs. I asked Adam, the yard manager, to report any additional issues they found, which he did. The list grew along with our stay but I am indebted to Zimmerman's as they found and corrected some major issues I would have discovered after a failure (wrong hose on AC intake and discharge, 15 year old hose on engine raw water intake and cracked bellows on dripless shaft for example); important items that needed attention. We left with an invoice that was twice what we had planned on last fall but every bit of the work was approved by me and all of it was performed in a 1st class manner.
We have had good work performed elsewhere but no where was the attention to detail as through.
I will go back and recommend Zimmerman's Marine.

Great Service, 2013-09-15
Captain: , Saint Simons Island, GA (115)

Lost a fresh water hose coming down the Bay. Limped into Norview on one engine where ZMI has a service dock. Everyone was most helpful and Clay is detailed, knowledgeable, and most professional. Found the culprit, got the parts, and installed. At the same time, checked to see if there were other issues. More issues were identified and repairs ongoing. Dee loaned us her vehicle to make a run to the market. Highly recommended.

Stress Reduction, 2011-10-09
Captain: , New Rochelle, NY (1000)

My Naiad's concked out while entering the Potomac and I was stressed out until I found out that Zimmerman was located at Norview Marina. The next day I headed down the bay, called Zimmerman and Tom Hale and Chad were waiting at the dock when I pulled in. They located the part in Hampton, arranged to have it delivered and milled down at a local machine shop and had me on my way in no time at all. Great yard and great people.

Great experience with Zimmerman, 2011-07-05
Captain: , Lancaster VA (393)

We damaged the gelcoat on our Monk 36 Trawler coming north this season. I contacted Zimmerman in Delataville and told them I would be in the area for the Monk rendezvous in June. They worked with me to schedule a tech while I was at the dock at Doziers Marina. All my e-mails and calls were answered, the work was flawless and the cost in line with other marinas in the area. I give them 5 stars!!!!!
