Reviews for Zimmerman Marine, Inc
Outstanding service, great techs, nice folks, 2017-06-17
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (470)

First time customer. I will return to Zimmerman in the future as I was impressed with their service and ready to help attitude. This Zimmermans is a working boatyard, not a marina, nothing fancy. It is a well-organized, service focused place. Needed a steering alignment. Both helm units and rudder angle indicator were out of sync and boat had a definite right turn when helm and instruments showed boat should be going straight. Steering systems tech, Peter, came onboard, discussed the issues and symptoms with me and within 10-minutes knew exactly what needed to be done. And then went straight about doing it. Couple hours later, he was ready to get underway with us for a sea trial and final checks. Steering seemed better than when the boat was newly commissioned. Great job. Fair price for service

Navigation: Zimmerman cove is shallow (navigation chart shows 4 feet). And, tight. When I spoke with the service manager, Alex, he asked what my draft was, 5 feet, and said to come in within 30 minutes either side of high tide. I did and saw 6.5 feet across the bar and 6.1 feet along the pier. I am fairly sure I was nearly toughing bottom at the pier at low tide. Water in the river just off the cove is 17 feet, but drops fast on final approach at the cove entrance. Need to stay north of centerline entering the cove. In fact, there are two white stakes on the starboard side as you enter. The white PVC stake that is closest to the center of the channel is the deepest water guide mark. This stake must be kept no more than 12 to 18 inches (yes, inches) off your starboard side as you pass. Once boat clears stake, turn starboard and head directly towards docks. Cove is well protected, so wind and current are not a factor. Yes, the entrance is both shallow and narrow, but I was surprise to see some rather large boats at both the docks and on the hard. So it is obviously doable, and has been frequently for many years.

What a great place! Called in the AM with a generator problem from the James River. Was met on the dock by Alex Yard Manager and after explaining the issue he had John down on the dock before I could finish my shutdowns. Issue was fixed in 1 1/2 hours and after staying overnight John came down in the morning to check again, before I left. Office staff so friendly and use of a loaner car for a trip to Walmart was very appreciated.

AB Dinghy Purchase, 2016-07-06
Captain: , Norfolk (10)

We contacted Zimmerman Marine and Joyce quoted us a new 10.6' AB Dinghy that was much cheaper than Defender, so we made the trip by boat and had to come in at high tide. Alex and Joyce were super organized in scheduling us on a day's notice when the dinghy arrived, and we were pleasantly surprised to meet David and Michael who were there so early to help us dock at 0630. They very quickly and efficiently assembled the dinghy out of the box and launched it in the water so we could hoist it up to the dinghy chocks topside. Charlie Johnson also came aboard and single-handedly mounted our 70 lb Yamaha with ease (impressive). Then it was a matter of adjusting the harness so everything was well balanced. This was also done quickly and efficiently, so we were absolutely thrilled that the job was completed while the tide remained high enough to go back to our anchorage and try out our new dinghy, which we love. Good job to all the employees and the courteous help that we received!

Unbeatable Tech Services, 2016-06-15
Captain: , Oriental, N.C. (352)

We arrived at the yard with only a few days notice and a list of issues to address. Alex, the Yard Manager was most helpful in getting us onto their schedule. Our inoperative salon AC unit was readily diagnosed by Michael, part located and fixed in no time. An intermittant ground to our bilge pump was more troublesome to track down but their mechanic, John Morris did a great job and wired a new dedicated ground as should have been done when installed. While servicing the windlass, which required removing the gear drive from the boat, he uncovered a damaged main gear which was tearing up the oil seal cusing the leak. The skills, thoroughness and diligence of these techs support the superior reputation of this yard. I would come back again!

Splendide replacement, 2016-06-10
Captain: , Nashville, Tn (50)

we needed to find repair facility to ship new replacement unit but everyone said they were too busy, 4-8 weeks before they could consider it. When I spoke with Alex at Zimmerman Marine, Mathews location, he said ship it here, we'll install we when you get here. Within an hour after arriving at their facility he had crew on the boat removing old unit. Everyone working on the job were very professional and took extra care to insure there was no damage removing the old unit and installing new one in very close working conditions. These guys did a great job at a fair price and it's easy to see why Zimmerman has been so successful for 35 years. We were very pleased with the service we received.

Fantastic Service Yard, 2016-05-28
Captain: , Charleston, SC (210)

Raw water pump, turbo and bad fuel all made for a bad day. Zimmerman Marine was fantastic. Very professional and managed to perform all services timely, despite commissioning regular customers vessels for the Memorial Day weekend. The measure of a good business is the quality of employees and the treatment received by customers from the employees. Our problem was disagnosed, parts ordered and repairs timely. In addition, this boat yard specialized is the restoration and constrution of finer yachts. It is the place to be if you are experiencing mechanical problems. With four yards in three states, they have the mid-Atlantic covered. The real shocker...reasonable prices.

Very accomodating, 2015-10-31

This is a small but excellent facility. Friendly, knowlegable, helpful staff.

Could not have been more pleased, 2014-07-13

When Chesapeake Bay Magazine rated this place the best service facility in the Southern Bay, I can understand why. Came in here on July 7 with a whole laundry list of stuff that needed to be done to my boat (old Hatteras 43 DCMY) and they got every bit of it done in ONE DAY! Even had a courtesy car for our use while we were docked here. Now we may have gotten special treatment because we used their yacht purchase service to buy our boat (another GREAT service) but I don't think so. I suspect every customer at Zimmerman Marine gets treated pretty special, just from seeing the attitude of all the employees there. You cannot find a better or more professional place to have work done on your boat.

First class boat yard, 2012-10-15

First class boat repair and maintenance yard. Great service.

One of the best repair yards, 2012-10-06
Captain: , Kent Narrows, MD (200)

All I can say is when my alternator "packed up" and the storms were coming in, I couldn't have been able to seek refuge in a better place. Over a weekend, the Z folks came to the boat and fixed my problem in a friendly, courteous and professional manner. You pay for what you get, but it is worth it. The quality of the alternator and regulator installation and wiring is second to none.

Outstanding Boat Yard, 2012-05-12
Captain: , Cape Coral, FL (1541)

We came to Zimmerman because they had done significant work on our boat for a previous owner and we had questions regarding current issues. We found them to be welcoming and very willing to answer our questions and help us out even though they had a full slate of projects. Very professional and knowledgable service staff, and everyone was incredibly friendly. Their sign out front says it all: paraphrased it says, "come on in, look around and ask us questions on our work." The yard has a loaner car to get to local shopping such as Wal Mart and groceries; useful to use while work is getting done to the boat.

Total craftsmanship and quality service!, 2012-03-10
Captain: , Rumsey Island (330)

One of the top boat yards on the east coast, let alone the Chesapeake Bay. Steve Zimmerman runs a first-class, New England-style yard that employs some of the finest craftsmen you will find anywhere. Was so impressed with their work that I bought one of their custom downeast Z 36. What a quality boat! Have had 2 seasons of upgrades done there and have yet to be disappointed. I promise you won't be either! I have complete trust and confidence in their work, their honesty and their integrity.

Superb Service, 2010-06-13
Captain: , St Louis (671)

As Zimmerman%u2019s ads say, the yard off Mobjack Bay is not convenient to anywhere but what excellent service. They really provide excellent service and stand behind their work. We have not found a yard with better people. If you draw more than 4 ft then it can be difficult getting in at low tide. There is 30 amp power (different phases) and water on the docks, showers and toilettes are available and a courtesy car. We have also been to their new yard in Deltaville, a better location but the same great people!

This small yard lives up to it's reputation for service and technical experience. Highly recommend for finding answers.
