Reviews for Yacht Basin Provision Company - Dock
Third Time, 2017-06-01
Captain: , Hampton NH (292)

Stopped again on 6/1/17 and found that after Hurricane Matthew they seemed to have just about totally reconstructed the restaurant and kitchen. But it looks just the same as before which is a good thing. They did not change the flavor of the place. Great. This was our fourth visit. While I was there, I surveyed the free docks and they need cleat maintenance. This seems to be a continuing problem. But I will still give them five stars.

A good local flavor restaurant with very friendly staff and a free dock! Beer and wine on the honor system--try that anywhere else! They sell tons of boiled shrimp but try the grilled yellowfin tuna.

The Visitor's Center has new digs along the waterfront to the north--same friendly and helpful staff. New public restrooms just behind the VC. Town is rich in history and worth the time to visit.
One drawback: The floating dock is in need of replacement. The cleats are loose and cannot be trusted. One had a broken bolt which was noted to the restaurant management. Tie to the pole instead but allow for the tide.

Great Food, Awesome Staff & Free Dock - who could ask for more?, 2017-05-10
Captain: , Port dover (20)

What a gem this place is. Not only do they have amazing food (we ate there twice in one day), but the staff are awesome. They all seem to really enjoy their job and they are super attentive and accommodating. Both the assistant managers of the restaurant (Andrea), and of the ice cream store (Paulette) were so friendly and helpful; we shared a few good laughs. Their "honor system" for drinks immediately makes you feel like you are a trusted friend, so rare these days in an establishment!

We had heard about this place from fellow boating friends. We have been traveling for 9 months on our boat, and are headed up the ICW towards home. I called ahead and the Provision Company confirmed that if we ate there, we could tie up to the dock overnight. What an amazing feature! Being on a boat, there are few places that allow you to dock overnight. It allowed us to get off the boat to stretch our legs and check out the town
All in all, this is such a welcoming place and we will recommend it to all our boating friends!

Great place and location and food., 2016-06-07
Captain: , GREENSBORO (10)

Easy water access. I stop here many time by water. the current and wind take a little to get used to. the docks are NOT well bumpered so be prepared to bumper up yourself. I wish the restuarant would fix the bumpers.

Good food, free night is you eat here., 2016-05-13
Captain: , Grand Rivers, Ky (2206)

5-6-16 We did not stay here but they offer a free night is you eat at the restaurant. We had a meal here and the food was good. We stayed at the free dock.

A good deal, 2015-04-18
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (2870)

We called by telephone mid-morning to confirm the free overnight dockage with a purchased meal was still valid and was told yes. We came in by 1100 and tied ourselves up. the current was a little bit of an issue, but not bad.

The bugs in this whole region of the country have been horrible for a few weeks, but that is no reflection on this particular spot. We enjoyed a fried-food evening meal that was certainly OK, but nothing to rave about.

This location is as close to the downtonw action as yo can get and we really enjoyed the visit. Staff were all very friendly. There was no excessive noise/music at night. It was strange being all alone in the morning stillness. We moved to the City Dock after that first night so as not to abuse the privelege.

nice stop after offshore passage, 2015-02-08
Captain: , Santa Maria CV (415)

We came in just before a storm reached the area. Found out, that they was not arround - closed for the saison. Neighbors thold us we can stay anyway and nobody will charge us. There was no Water or electricity but it was a free dockage and way better than the Towndock on the other side.

Convenient Stop, 2014-11-04
Captain: , Wrightsville Beach NC (111)

We are a 40 foot trawler and we stayed here overnight. After we docked we found out that the Provision Company restaurant was actually closed for the winter and was undergoing renovations. They said we could still dock there and so we ate at Fishy Fishy just down the way. No power or water and it was just a bit rolling until dark but was free so all was good.

A Must Stop, 2014-06-05
Captain: , Grand Haven, Michigan (230)

We were the only boat at the floating dock, they let us stay tied up overnight (we had dinner and a couple too many beers there, but also walked around town) we had originally tried for the southport city dock but it was in poor shape, and our little boat got kinda sucked under it (27ft sailboat) both docks could be hard with pets getting on and off, but ours did just fine. Southport is adorable & the people were so nice & welcoming! Food was inexpensive & good!

Captain: , East Falmouth, MA (1633)

When you get something for nothing, you don't expect much. We have avoided this free dock thinking it was very run down. It is in need of repair, but it is very servicable. It was quite windy when we came in and the restaurant mgr. came out with a helper to help us in. The food was fairly priced and the service was good.

Great food, great staff., 2014-04-29
Captain: , Pensacola (160)

Had a nice dinner, and enjoyed a quiet night here 4/21. Awesome crab cakes!

Convenient and free dock, 2014-01-27
Captain: , Kelso, Wa. (884)

All the eateries were closed when we came through 1/21/14 The local fishermen coming in and out of the basin were courteous and the boats passing through on the ICW less so. The NAPA auto marine store has a fair marine selection for the size of the community

Free dock right at the eateries, 2013-11-15
Captain: , US East Coast (610)

We docked here on 11/15 - restaurant was closed for season but dock open for free use as long as you want. Two fixed docks and 2-3 floating spots. Great location right off the ICW- not even any need to go far into Southport basin

We touched bottom at low tide - we draw 5.5ft - recommend bow in to avoid rudder sticking in the mud at low tide

Good Stop right on the ICW, 2013-09-24
Captain: , Cincinnati, Oh. (140)

No water or electric. Free dock. Stayed on the floating dock. The tide was around three feet. Very good food at a resonable price on an open air table. The view was across the harbor and lovley sun set.

Great stop - love Provisions!, 2013-06-24
Captain: , Nashville (315)

Every time we come through Southport, we stop at Provisions to eat. This was our first time staying on one of their docks, and you can't beat a free dock for the price of dinner, especially when we would have eaten there anyway. I'm giving it 3 stars only because it's not technically a marina and therefore, no showers, electric or water, but worth stopping and staying. The only thing I would recommend to other boaters is to stay on one of their floating docks. We didn't, and the tide went so low that I had to get up to loosen the lines in the middle of the night, and literally had to climb from the boat up onto the dock (the boat was about 3-4 feet below the dock at low low). We'll definitely be back!

Great Port in a storm, 2013-04-22
Captain: , Falmouth Maine (100)

Second time here. Stopped last fall during off season. Nice town but almost everything closed. Stopped last evening after coming from Little River to Southport heading into 20-25 knt winds all the way !! It was a relief to find an open slip. I did not relish the thought of dropping anchor in the small basin. Got help tying up from another boater (Rick & Roll) and spent the night tied up to the dock for free. (Or for just the cost of a meal I would have gotten anyway.) Good food, friendly service, and a sheltered spot for the evening. Highly recommended !!!

OK place to eat and spend the night, 2013-04-16
Captain: , Stony Point, NY (852)

We pulled into a narrow slip (we have a 13' 3" beam) that had a fixed dock on one side and a floating pier on the other. You get no help or advice, so we tied to both sides. If you eat in the restaurant it is free for a night. The food was OK, they closed at 9:00 on a Sunday night in April and it was quiet. The town is lovely, and there are plaques all along the waterfront with historical information - like a walking tour. Great town, OK place to stay but the price is right.

Hard to Beat, 2012-12-04
Captain: , Nyack, NY (646)

See other reviews. Arrived off-season to a free slip. No services, But delightful small harbor and nearby village, parks and museums. Restaurant being remodelled. Will eat here in season as we like this town.. Fixed docks and vertical ladders may be a challange.

Off season free dockage, 2012-11-18
Captain: , Topsail Beach, NC (480)

We stopped here and found restaurant had closed for the season. So the dock is still free, and you are not obligated to eat! Floating dock with no services (after all, it is free). Great place to overnight, easy in and out. At low tide it is difficult to get to land because you have to climb straight up a ladder attached to the adjacent fixed dock....hard to maneuver with a dog under your arm! Don't know how you could get a large dog to shore. At high tide you can pretty much step right off the floating dock onto the fixed dock but at low tide it can be tricky. I give it 4 stars because it is free and floating dock. If I had to pay, I'd probably only give it 2 or 3 stars.

Good stop - free overnight dockage, 2012-10-27
Captain: , Worton Creek, MD (60)

Free overnight dockage if you eat lunch or dinner at restaurant. Friendly good and reasonable. Few wakes during daylight - peaceful night's dockage! Will stop again!

Free Dock!! if you buy their dinner or lunch , and the food, its good!, 2012-07-13
Captain: , Key Largo (5457)

Good Food, Good prices, unique Keys atmosphere, great t shirts, nice town, licquor store, and the dock has had some work done it. Many of the older planks replaced.
I have paid to stay at much worse docks, I like here, and will be back.

Good food stop, 2012-05-10
Captain: , Portsmouth, NH (130)

A good stop either north- or southbound; excellent, reasonably-priced seafood; friendly staff; close to the pleasant downtown; docks in only fair condition with plenty of wake before sunset.

Wonderful treasure, 2012-04-28
Captain: , Rock Hall, MD (134)

When we pulled in at 6 pm on a recent Friday night one of the waiters came out to help us tie up in one of thier three floating docks. There is also one fixed dock that would accomodate our 42 trawler. We ate a wonderful, inexpensive dinner at the Provision Company Restuarant including a wine and a beer and a delicisous grouper salad sandwiich. We even got a take out salad for the next day and the total bill was $35. The sllip was free! Yes the locals do tend to put up a good sized wake as they pass but as previously stated, the traffic dies down in the early evening. What a delightful little gem right in downtown Southport!

Provision Company, 2012-04-14
Captain: , Lewisporte, Nl. (619)

Friendly staff allowed us to stay overnight at no charge as long as we eat in their establishment. The food was good, the scenery excellent. Southport is a nice place to visit with a nice waterfront. It was a busy place during spring break but the service was good. The docks are floating wood and there was a lot of wake from passing boats.

Provision Company, 2011-12-12
Captain: , Patrick AFB Florida (1254)

If you don't mind paying for some over-hyped and really poor food, this is the place to stop. Free dock (with your purchased meal) at a price that we've decided isn't worth it unless you're really in a bind for a place to stop. We don't understand why the locals continue to patronize this place. Great water view, however. Perhaps that's why.

Captain: , Whitfield Estates, Sarasota, FL (1001)

We arrived at dusk and noticed 8 empty slips by the ICW.
The docks were rocking but stable. After being on rough waters the slips seemed fine. We ate at Fishy Fishy and the food was excellent and not all that expensive. After 10 pm there was little traffic on the ICW to disturb us. We left at 5 am and the GPS was accurate enough for us to navigate until sunrise.

Southport Provision Company, 2011-11-04
Captain: , Houston (774)

We tied up here last night. The docks are in bad repair but still adequate. It can get rough during a storm plus the local fishermen have no reguard for the no wake signs. There is a NAPA auto parts amd marine store about 8 blocks away. It isn't a West Marine but should be able to satisfy basic needs. The restaurant only serves lunch the first two weeks of November and then it shuts down for the season. Fishy Fishy is probably a better stop if available. I was told that the condo slips next to the Provision Company are available if the Provision Company is full but you can't use the water or electric.

Great inexpensive restaurant, 2011-10-10
Captain: , Portland, OR (120)

Good food, great staff. Can stay as long as one likes as long as you eat daiily in the restaurant.

One sllip wide enough for catamarans, 2 other floating docks, 1 fixed . Not in the best of shape but adequate. Lots of wakes.

Delicious!, 2011-06-12
Captain: , Southport, NC (80)

Great little restaurant. I'm normally pleasantly surprised to find dock space right in front of the restaurant.

Great Food - Great People, 2011-05-17
Captain: , Cleveland (2083)

We pulled in at 11 am when the weather turned. One of the workers came out to help us in as it was VERY windy, wavy. Extremely nice staff all around. They asked if we were staying the night - we said yes - no problem at all.

The food was excellent - we ended up eating both lunch and dinner! Bouncy night due to wind and waves but a comfortable night was spent. One of those nights when we were glad not to be a anchor.

Great stop, Awsome people and Food, 2011-05-11
Captain: , Melbourne Florida (4616)

10 May 11- Stopped again for the shrimp and tuna. OUTSTANDING place to each and spend night. We just love it. So if we come in and all the docks are taken, you will have to move your boat...LOL

Must stop. Great FRESH Tuna and more.....See you next year......

good free dock with nice folks, 2010-11-12
Captain: , miami,fl (2241)

just around corner from icw - bldg with green awning - free slips if you eat at rest. but was closed when we came thru - can stay anyway - did meet workers on last day of work and were to late to eat --sad --

You can stay overnight, 2010-10-15
Captain: , North Myrtle Beach, SC (3210)

In addition to what others say. Our place to eat everytime we come here. They have 4 slips.

Provision Company Dock, 2010-10-13
Captain: , On the water (1501)

The only issue with this dock is quite a few people don't pay attention to the "No Wake" signs as you approach the Southport basin. If I was to tie up here again I would plan my arrival for late afternoon/early evening so the wakes might not be so bad. But hey it's a free dock and they let you spend the night for long as you have dinner in the restaurant!

Good local food, 2010-08-29
Captain: , Warsaw, Ky (875)

Good reasonably priced food. Live music at the end of dock and ice cream to the left.

Good eatery, 2010-06-10
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (297)

Nice place to tie up for a good meal. Friendly staff and good food.

Not really a marina..., 2010-04-23
Captain: , Chesapeake Bay (592)

Maybe this should be a new category of local knowledge. This restaurant has two floating docks and one fixed dock. Free whle you are eating, and maybe longer. Nothing fancy, but good food, reasonable prices, and friendly staff.
