Reviews for Wrangell Port and Harbor
Crowded But Nice, 2016-07-14
Captain: , Whittier Alaska Longview WA (609)

We were able to tie up on the long dock right in town. The folks were friendly and willing to help you out. As stated bid big bull rails. Fuel right across from doclk. Thanks for a great stay. We will stay again. On our second stay the electrical was not satisfactory. We were on the long dock again but closer to the head dock. The harbor master told us that it was 30amps, but 20 amps in reality. However, the outlet we had would not hold 15amps. The electrical needs some work.

Good Layover Marina, 2016-06-23
Captain: , Everett, Washington (824)

We came for two nights in late June. The inner and outer harbors were full of fishing boats so the harbor master put us in Heritage Harbor. The two long, side-tie docks for transients are good, wide with stout bull railings (no cleats). We were fine with the services being 1/2 mile away as we have folding bikes but the walk is level and on sidewalks. Nearly all services are available. July 4th weekend is their huge community event. This definitely not your cruise-ship experience that is Ketchikan-like. This is a full spectrum working community. The grocery and hardware stores are excellent. The museum is definitely worth the stop with great exhibits and a good gift shop.

Basic marina with a nice town, 2014-01-06

Showers are at the local laundromat or in the back of the bar. The newer Heritage harbor is quite a walk from town. Nice bike trail to the south. View from Mt Dewey is excellent. Two grocery stores. We liked the one across from the hardware store better. The golf course was fun. We were able to find some necessary boat parts without too much difficulty.

Wrangell Transient Facilities, 2013-04-10
Captain: , Seattle (21031)

We would rank the new modern Heritage Harbor location 4.5 stars, however, the older Reliance Harbor location is at best 2 stars. Unfortunately, one doesn't have a choice as to which location they will be assigned to. Wrangell Harbor is very crowded during the summer, and even though the harbormaster and his staff will do anything in their powers to find you a space, including hot berthing, it's not unusual to be denied a berthing.

Although the staff usually tries to be friendly, we have had visits where the pressure from the crowds have resulted in surly behavior towards waiting boaters. This has happened more as an exceptiion than a rule.

The town of Wrangell has a very interesting mixture of cultures. It bills itself as a Western Town and has a "High Noon" feel to it which is mixed with the native Alaskan culture and the tourist laden cruise ships which descends en mass upon the city. All of these cultures exist within a beautiful marine enviornment with a snow-capped mountain background.

Since we are wilderness enthusiasts, we constantly debate whether we want to stop in Wrangell as we transit from and to Ketchikan to points north and south. The marina facilites neither promote nor deter our desire to make Wrangell a destination.
