Reviews for Winter Harbor Marina
Best price on fuel, 2017-09-20
Captain: , Marblehead, OH (296)

Best price between Great Lakes and North Carolina. Paid 2.13/gal (nickel a gal cash discount)

Friendly and professional, 2017-09-11
Captain: , Durango, CO (210)

They are a full service yard, not a resort. We left our boat here for a haul out to do bottom paint and minor repairs. They diagnosed other issues and did a first class job fixing them. Friendly folks, nice safe area, and loaner cars made it a pleasure being there. Diesel was $2.18/gal, the cheapest we've paid this year anywhere.

All the previous comments are true, 2017-08-17
Captain: , jacksonville, FL (340)

This is the place to stop. One of tghe best facilities on the entire trip. You will be pleased.

Love this place!, 2017-08-08
Captain: , Willsboro Bay NY (20)

First rate, few slips for transients but worth the stop. Fuel prices great. Loaner car for provisioning and dining. Beautiful and immaculate grounds. Always a pleasure to stay here.

great place to store inside (heated) no laundry onsite but 2 courtesy cars to get to everything, washrooms are immaculate, everything is well maintained, , 2017-08-06
Captain: , Hilton Head, SC (420)

minor communication issues aside, they do solid work here but not the cheapest for repair work, but familiar with big boats. cheap fuel

Great people. Great communication. Great layover, 2017-08-04
Captain: , Table Rock Lake, Missouri (112)

We stored our boat here in their dry stack for three weeks at a very good rate. They had it in the water in perfect shape and waiting for us in the water when we returned.

Courtesy cars to go for meals. Quiet harbor for spending night on the boat. Great gas prices. Every single person at the marina was helpful and friendly. They even picked us up at the airport for a small fee.

Cheapest Fuel, 2017-06-29
Captain: , Sacramento, CA (416)

What more need I say, except to add that the staff were all over us helping to fuel up, pump out, and add water. Very friendly.

Great people., 2017-06-25
Captain: , Oxford, MD (810)

We stayed two days and in addition to the great fuel prices, dockage was easy in and out. The docks have great dock bollards and the face of the dock has vertical wood slats so fenders can't slip through. The courtesy car is a real plus (there are two). We were able to go out for dinner and to reprovision at Wegmans. For anyone not familiar with Wegmans and making this stop, it is the BEST grocery store on the planet. Heads and laudry are reported to be immaculate but we didn't use them. All marinas should be as helpful, welcoming and full of good humor as Winter Harbour. Everyone from the dock staff to the owners are wonderful. The only issue, as with so many marinas, is the Wifi. I could get reception with my Apple but my husband could not with his HP and we could not get a strong enough signal to power our Roku. Overall, a great experience.

nice folks, great stop, 2017-06-20
Captain: , Winter Garden, Fl (2391)

6/2017 We made it a point to stop here again on our way around the Loop. Tom, John, Kim and everyone else were very accomodating, helpful and pleasant. We got our last minute stuff before going north, had some issues looked at by John and got the lowest priced fuel in the state! We'll be back.

6/2013 We stopped here to do some last minute provisioning before going up to Canada. They don't have much on site, but have two courtesy cars that allow you to get everything done. We also received some very good advice from the mechanics on power usage/systems. Very accommodating and friendly. Only fault was the wakes of passing's not a 'No Wake' zone and not everyone was courteous.

Winter Storage, 2017-06-14
Captain: , Honolulu (712)

Great place to store the boat for the winter. Dockage is very reasonable, $.90 with Boat US discount. Diesel $2.38 in June of 2017. Labor rate is $108 and every service is parts and labor, no firm estimates...can be pricey for them to attempt repairs which are unsuccessful, but to be fair, they only attempt repairs which are authorized in writing. Clean, well kept facility.

Once Again Winter Harbor Excells, 2016-09-24
Captain: , florida (60)

We have used Winter Harbor since they opened. They have fixed many things on a variety of boats and do it right and make sure it is perfect. Our last experience we pulled in on Friday afternoon with a problem and a part. They fixed it right then no questions asked no well we can't do it because the yard closes in a few hours nothing they just did it. The team is fabulous from the office staff to the technicians. Every marina should take lessons from Winter Harbor.

It's all true!, 2016-09-13
Captain: , Thousand Islands New York (30)

All the positive reviews about this small but powerful marina are true! Don't stay anywhere else!

Perfect frendly easy in easy out amazing fuel prices A+++ facility and staff, 2016-08-01
Captain: , Pensacola Fl (80)

This marina is what other marinas should strive for, the grounds are very well kept, and super clean. Fuel prices are the lowest in the area by far. Flowers, herb garden, dry storage, heated winter storage, marine travel lift, beautiful restroom / shower facility, ships store, parts store, all the canadian charts, curtesy vehicles and th elist goes on and on. reasonable nightly rate. less than a dollar! it doesnt get any better than this! so happy to have found this place! cheers

Great place for Heated Winter Storage, 2016-07-24
Captain: , Sylvan Beach, NY (20)

Tom and his team (crew) are fantastic to deal with on or off season. Repair service is one of the best around. Been Winter storing for over 9 seasons and I would not store my boat in the off season at any other location.

A Great Marina, 2016-07-21
Captain: , baltimore (91)

When you arrive you realize this place is different. The landscaping and cleanliness of the whole property is unbelievable. The winter storage buildings are massive and the equipment is modern and well maintained. The bathrooms and showers are spotless. But the best part is the people.
We had an extended stay for some major engine repairs. The repairs were done professionally and timely while the whole staff made us feel at home. I highly recommend them for any boat repairs you might need as well as winter storage. This truly is a 1st class operation run by some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

One of the best we have visited, 2016-07-19
Captain: , Baltimore (529)

Very easy location to dock along the face dock. Pump-out is very fast. The fuel dock is very easy and the best price in the area.

We had them do a small mechanical repair which was handled very professionally and quick.

How many marinas have multiple courtesy cars?

If we get back to the area, we will be calling for a reservation.

Nice Winter Storage, 2016-07-06
Captain: , Louisiana, MO (391)

Great place to store your boat over the winter! I paid to have my batteries charged every 6-7 weeks over the wiinter but my house bank still had to be replaced when commissioned. When the batteries were replaced, I asked if the battery monitor had to be reprogramemded and was told NO.

Wrong, it did and I was on the phone with Winter Harbor and Magnum for 3-6 hours one day while underway to re-program the montitor. Magnum said all batty monitors loose their settings when disconnected.

very nice facility, 2016-07-05
Captain: , Fort Myers (700)

clean and exceptionally well maintained. used the borrow car to pick up our son from the Syracuse airport. best diesel fuel prices for many many miles. $2.21. 90 cents a foot, clean showers and bathrooms. Friday night local dirt track is a great diversion off the boat about a mile or so away.

Second time here and we can't say enought great things about it, 2016-06-18
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (2870)

Update: Jun 2016

This place is an example for all others. The staff is great, they treat people right, and the grounds and services are excellent. Highly recommended!

If you had to be stuck somewhere, this was not a bad place to be. The staff was fantastic, the showers were great, and the environment was surprisingly pretty for a working boatyard. Also, the rate is good, especially when you are there for a week instead of a night.

The courtesy vehicle was a real asset and quite necessary since there is nothing nearby.

Unexpected 11 month stop, 2016-06-13
Captain: , Portsmouth (553)

While cruising the loop we had a family medical emergency and had to find a place to leave the boat. We pulled into Winter Harbor and had to have the boat stored the first of July. The marina staff is very friendly and accommodating. The boat was stored indoors heated. Couldn't ask for more. We had maintenance done over the winter. John, the service manager, was excellent as was the work performed. I highly recommend this marina, couldn't ask for nicer people.

Dittos on last review, 2016-06-04
Captain: , Westbrook CT (277)

Like King Cole, we stored and had work done on the boat. Work was done carefully and well. Shaft and rudder seals, float switches, and repairs to rudder post support among tasks. They discovered a hard to see but important crack in the rudder arm.

Warm storage is sweet and we will likely do it again.

Professionally Run Operation, 2016-05-26
Captain: , Austin, TX (877)

We left our boat for winter 2015-2016 storage and boat repairs. Tom, the owner and his crew were very caring, meticulous and professional. We found them to be fair in their service work. John, the yard manager was very responsive as were the office crew. A courtesy car is provided. Laundry, Wal-Mart, and restaurants are nearby. We enjoyed our stay while provisioning the boat. This marina is exceptionally clean, well-kept and manicured. We were pleased with our time at Winter Harbor and recommend this marina.

very helpful staff-courtesy car you replace gas you use-great maintenance people very clean

The Best Facility you will find, 2015-10-28
Captain: , Naples Florida (246)

From Tom the owner to Leslie the GM to John in charge of operations to Noreen the parts queen and Kim who will take only a small part of your money, this is the best marina I've been to in over 2000 miles of the Loop. I pulled in on spec with an overheating engine, they troubleshot it that morning and soon after, the cylinder head gasket had been replaced. From cheap diesel to 2 courtesy cars to beautiful landscaping with excellent bathroooms and the friendliest people, this is a must stop for all.
I left the boat there for several weeks and Tom gave me a 'couldn't refuse' price to paint the hullsides. Summer is quiet for them as all boats are out in use so if you need any work done this is the place. Also the heated storage facility has to be seen to be believed.
I have no relationship with the facility and this review is totally without bias.

Best place for gas, 2015-09-10
Captain: , Oneida, NY (264)

Gasoline was under 3.20, and this is the only place I've seen so far that has credit card ready pumps that are available 24 hours a day. What a novel idea! This will be my go to fuel stop when I'm in the area from now on. I can't speak for any of their other facilities.

Transient dockage, 2015-07-27
Captain: , Baldwinsville, NY (10)

Always a pleasure staying overnight here. From the low rate, to the free herbs, to the spotless bathrooms and free courtesy cars.

Good technicians/Good services, 2015-07-15
Captain: , Southport, NC (637)

Had generator replaced here. Although very expensive labor they did a great job. John did all possible to get us on our way.

The boat yard is all paved with excellent equipment and facilities.

Two courtesy cars, one hour/7 mile limit. Office staff, while accommodating, seems to be under a lot of pressure.

Response to Bill Borchert/Bayou Gypsy, 2015-06-09
Captain: , brewerton, ny (140)

To all the Cruisers out there%u2026

It%u2019s rare we respond to posts as we feel it%u2019s important public forums like these remain informative, constructive and non-confrontational.

Winter Harbor Marina techs since opening in 1996 have had approximately 74,800 service jobs ranging from simple to complex fabrication and refits. We would actually guess this to be a conservative number. Of these jobs less than 1% have had issues leading back to Winter Harbor error. We are human and boats can be complex depending on their country of origin, layout and care. Of these 1% of jobs, Winter Harbor has stood behind every client and made every attempt to resolve any issue.

Bill Borchert owner of Bayou Gypsy despite his negative comments to the AGLCA and now Active Captain was NOT among the 1% of human error. Winter Harbor serviced Mr. Borchert%u2019s 1985 Vista Trawler to the best of our ability given it%u2019s aged condition & subpar care. Winter Harbor feels there is no basis for his comments. The Scope of his service was structural in nature and complex. All service was authorized in writing by Mr. Borchert and he was billed a more than fair price for the scope and type of service(s) requested. Winter Harbor serviced and left Bayou Gypsy in better shape and condition than when we received it. Our archived pictures of before and after show a marked changed. We did ask Mr. Borchert to print a retraction as he had not yet seen 1st hand the depth of the work that had been done on Bayou Gypsy. Mr. Borchert refused and stated %u201C you can post a comment if you want.%u201D

It%u2019s not our protocol to post information pertaining to our clients service experience with us. But we feel Mr. Borchert has crossed a line and at the urging of AGLCA & Active Captain followers they felt it needed addressing. Our commenting back to these forums is to not insult Bill Borchert or his wife in any way, but we feel his comments are not accurate in nature or constructive and his hostility toward Winter Harbor is unnecessary. Winter Harbor employs 17+ families who are dedicated to their craft and work extremely hard to make it all happen.

Wishing you safe cruising%u2026

BE FAIR WARNED!!, 2015-06-07
Captain: , Bayou Bonfouca, LA- Great Loop Cruiser (708)

I'd give them a zero if it let me!

The last thing this place is, is a service yard!
Don't be fooled by the fancy marketing and pretty buildings! This is the WORST business we have visited in over 5,800 miles!
They over charge, over promise, and do NOT deliver!
Winter Harbor left our boat a wreck of dust, debris, and damage from rats. It took us 3 days to clean up the mess they made inside our boat and fix/replace things they broke, like the galley faucet.
Don't even get me started about the 28.5 hours of labor to install a convection/microwave at $100/hr (Invoice was $3204! And it did not include the purchase of the oven).
The woodwork "not to exceed" estimate of $35k ballooned to over $48k! By the time they were done taking advantage of us and holding our boat hostage, we managed to escape by paying over $56k. They didn't fix everything we paid for, left parts laying about, and didn't batten down all the windows, causing more water leakage in the forward stateroom.
To make matters worse, they threatened to not put our boat back in the water and treated us badly after we complained.
Be fair warned!

Great place to stop, 2015-06-01
Captain: , New Castle, NH (80)

We stayed the night and used the free car for a trip to a restaurant about seven miles away. Passed WalMart, Home Depot, Target and other large retailers. The shower and toilet facilities were excellent. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Pretty but Poor Service, 2014-11-08
Captain: , Snead Island, FL (40)

We came to Winter Harbor Marina based on recommendations from fellow loopers. We used the courtesy vehicle several times, and had mechanical work done that had to be adjusted later with help from the marina staff. Very scenic location, best fuel price in the area, and good clean dockage.

here in 07,09, 11 and 14, 2014-11-04
Captain: , Key Largo (5457)

only 50 amp was available at the long dock, cheapest fuel around. Gas is NOT non ethanol.

Captain: , Toronto (40)

Very helpful staff, very good fuel prices, docks and wall in good shape, restrooms and showers good. Power, water available.

Great Heated Winter Storage and Parts Place, 2014-07-13
Captain: , Sarasota (1427)

As mentioned before, this is a yard, not a resort. We like yards. Boat was in very good shape and very clean upon spring removal. They have very good access to parts - they get overnight delivery from Kellogg's, match Defender, and there's no shipping charge. See Noreen, the parts queen. Their prices are very reasonable compared to New England prices. They have an herb garden for visiting cruisers, as well as tomatoes and pepper plants - check back in October when they're ripe! :-) Good price on diesel.

Good safe stop nice clean boat yard, 2014-06-26
Captain: , Palm Beach Gardens, FL (1997)

The staff at this marina are very nice the facility is very clean but it is a boat yard first.
There is no laundry facilities but they do have two loaner vehicles but you can only use them for an hour at a time which makes it difficult to get any shopping done and still be on time to get the loaner car back.
They have some good staff on site but their hourly charge out rate was expensive at $160 per hour for mechanical service.
Fuel price was fair

Excellent Service, 2014-06-24
Captain: , Lighthouse Point, FL (227)

Very good place for winter storage as well as repairs. After seeing the work in progress in mid winter I expected a big clean up. The shop is super clean as was my boat. Very satisfied.

Spotless marina and yard!, 2014-06-13
Captain: , Naples, FL (1096)

Update May 2014: they went above and beyond to get our boat ready for us. Thank you Winter Harbor!
We were so impressed with the facilities, access to town via courtesy car,and friendly personnel that we signed a contract for indoor heated storage. Much more reasonable than we thought it would be.

Re-Power & Fiberglass Work, 2013-09-05
Captain: , Longboat Key, FL. (30)

2013 I had new engines, new fuel tanks, new glendinning controls, new exhaust system, they came thru hull bottom. The work was absolutley beyond my expectations! I do plan to go bacl one day to take advantage of their state of the art paint booth. My 24 year old boat runs like new and the interior show no sign of any work done. Great job!!

Captain: , Longboat Key, FL (445)

We wintered here after the Montreal Ottawa Rideau loop. Nice folks and heated storage to boot but book early. Diesel fuel was $3.65 inc tax in 6/19/13. Courtesy cars for short runs, two restrooms each with shower.

High Praise!, 2013-06-17
Captain: , Midland Ontario (660)

We wintered the boat here and had repairs done over the winter in the heated indoor storage facility. The workmanship was flawless, prices were good and we would recommend this facility without hesitation.
Staff are friendly and helpful and will go out of their way to make your stay comfortable. The marina has cars available for running errands to local shops and restaurants. If you have a dog, watch out for the local ' attack cat ' LOL

Great looking marina on the Oneida River (just east of Onieda Lake)--Exceptionally clean, reasonable prices, excellent service. Very well maintained facility with heated storage. No permanent slips, just transient slips...Enjoy the stop or stay...

Treated like Family, 2012-09-13
Captain: , Liverpool, NY (35)

Have kept our 24' Regal and now our new Cruisers 300 at Winter Harbor since 2005. Tom, Leslie and Noreen are second to none. Doesn't matter if you are storing the smallest boat or the biggest yacht, you can always be counted being treated with a smile. Can't imagine storing our boat any place else.

Great Folks, 2012-07-21
Captain: , Port Lavaca, TX (451)

The marina employees were all very friendly and helpful. Marina grounds were exceptionally clean and well kept. Bathrooms and showers were clean. Diesel price was very good. Courtesy car makes all the difference - access to town, rental cars, airport, etc. Highly recommended.

No heated storage for catamarans, 2012-06-08

One of the Best, 2012-06-04
Captain: , Guntersville, AL (451)

Very impressive marina with extensive capabilities and winter storage. Courtesy cars mitigate the remoteness of the facility. Best fuel prices in the area and transient rate is 90 cents per foot!

A little remote but very friendly and helpful, 2011-08-19
Captain: , Sandusky, OH (294)

We have had an intermitent alternator problem that Jim, the service manager diagnosed as a faulty alarm switch. So far, so good. Impressed by the courtesy car offer (they have two cars. One of them is a mercedes station wagon). $.90 per foot for Boat US is a decent deal. They advertise free Cable. Nothing coming out of my pedestal. No biggy. Good place for an overnite at a reasonable price.

Very Capable Facility, 2011-08-07
Captain: , Brewerton, NY (489)

Clean and well run faciltiy with friendly staff. Caters to higher end clientele, and can perform major service and repairs. Regularly has best diesel price in this locale.

Ready to Help, 2011-07-25
Captain: , Mystic, CT (382)

We arrived to check in at 10:45 am. I mentioned that my dog was in need of veterinary care. Before I knew it, the office staff had made an appointment with a local vet . I used one of their two loaner cars and within the hour I was sitting in the vet's office. Amazing service, I don't even get that at home!!

Very Good Yard and Marina, 2011-07-16
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

We hit a signigicant amount of debris in the Eirie and damaged our props and drive shafts. Winter Harbor is the only yard capable of hauling our 19' beam, but more than that, there were very good.
All the staff were friendly while we underwent repairs, and their Serivice Manager, Jim, is as good a service rep as you will find up and down the coast. Rates were reasonable. Many boats were there getting reparied from damage done on the canal. Plus its a AGLCA sponsor and discounts the dockage. Great stop.

Clean Competent Marina and staff, 2011-07-15
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, Fl (6909)

If I were to store a boat over the winter it is at Winter Harbor in their Climate controlled Boatel. Everything is in top sha;e and teh travel lift included. Easy in and out and in a very protected area.

Our one night stay at Winter Harbor was excellent! Two dock boys met us at the dock. One took car of fueling while the other pumped us out.

They then moved our boat to our slip. The showers were very clean with plenty of hot water. Everybody in the place was friendly and helpful.

Overall anexcellent place to spend a night or a month.

Staff very helpful with docking.

Winter Harbor had the nicest docks we found on the Erie Canal. We also had a problem with our battery/charging system, and they were very attentive to our needs, checking back to make sure everything was working properly. We appreciated the use of the loaner vehicle to reprovision and survey the town.

The folks at Winter Harbor go out of their way to help with most any of your traveling needs. Tom, the owner and Leslie, the office manager are great to deal with. They treat transients as a priority. We had a short haul a few years ago and they put in the lift as soon as we arrived. The price was quite reasonable as well. Their fuel prices were the lowest in the area. Their courtesy cars were great to get to various stores for reprovisioning or restaurants. Their restrooms are very clean. This is another must stop on the Erie Canal.

This was our first visit to this marina. The staff was so helpful...they helped us locate an Opthamologist (first mate had an eye problem) and arranged transportation to and from the doctor.

Fuel price was excellent... cheapest we paid in a while (2.99). The docks are in excellent condition and the marina is very neat and clean.

If you're looking for a resort - forget it. If you're looking for a marina - this is it. This was our third visit to this marina and I wouldn't think of not stopping. The staff is the most friendly and helpful of any marina we have ever stayed.

If you need work done on your boat - this is the place. If you want to purchase fuel at the lowest price on the Erie Canal - this is it. If you want to drive a Mercedes to the local West Marine, WalMart, Target, Home Depot or Wegmans (best grocery chain in America) - this is the place to stop!

Very helpful, friendy and clean, 2010-06-29

We stopped here for 2 days due to weather and used the courtesy cars to do laundry, get groceries, go to West Marine, WalMart and get a hair cut. It couldn't have been easier with the 2 courtesy cars and the welcome package that they provided.

Sue had her hair cut at the Hairport (just across the bridge) and the owner, Karen, was welcoming and did a great job. On Tuesday nights she cuts men's hair.

When we left, we had a cooling problem and pulled back onto the dock. They were right down there to see if they could help.

Definately a great place to stop and get caught up with life.

Have stayed there several times and will be back in a few weeks again. They generally have the best fuel prices around, great service and really nice folks. One of the few marinas I have found with two courtesy cars. Not close to shopping, etc. but with two cars available it doesn’t matter.

The most boater-friendly marina/boatyard we've ever come across. They will order whatever you need, at competitive prices, and it will be here when you arrive. (We have had to do this twice-- and they couldn't be nicer.) On 7-1-09 diesel fuel is $2.29/gal. Ship store is excellent, as well.

At 90 cents a night, $5 pump out, the best fuel prices around and very complete and competant repair services, this is a real gem. The facility itself is extremely well maintained (pretty new too) and is run be some very friendly folks. A clear 5-star.

Working boatyard, 2009-06-20
Captain: , fairland (2653)

Considering it is a working boatyard, it is very nice. Five stars if you need work done, but there is nothing close, nothing within walking distance. Cheap rental ($.90/ft w BoatUS) and inexpensive fuel.

We've stayed at over 90 marinas in the last year and this one is the most professional operation we've experienced. They also have the cheapest fuel in the area.
