Reviews for Windmill Harbour Marina
Shelter from Hurricane Irma, 2017-09-19
Captain: , St. Johns Yacht Harbor, Charleston,SC (10)

My wife and I made the trip to Windmill Harbour Marina on Friday, September 8th, along with two other friends' boats, to seek shelter in their safe harbor from Hurricane Irma.

We were greeted by Jake and Zac, who were so welcoming and accommodating. We had a mechanical issue upon arrival and they were very helpful in recommending a local business to purchase parts.

Both Jake and Zac checked on us during and after the storm to make sure we had everything we needed. It was such a beautiful marina that we decided to stay an extra couple of days to enjoy our surroundings. We both highly recommend a visit to this spectacular marina and we look forward to visiting again very soon.

Thanks for sheltering me during Irma, 2017-09-18
Captain: , Mt. Pleasant (10)

I cannot say enough nice things about the marina and its staff. They were very helpful getting me set up for the storm and made sure i was OK both during and after. This is a great place to visit. I would highly recommend Windmill Harbour to anyone.

First Class Hurricane Hole, 2017-09-13
Captain: , Charleston, SC (220)

Once again sought refuge from Irma at Windmill Harbor. This time Harbourmaster Jake McMillan was able to help two friends' boats during the storm. The surge was almost on par with Matthew, and the marina handled it well. You won't find a nicer or more well managed marina anywhere. 5-stars and three thumbs up!

After a Momorial Day (US) visit, the Bolivian Navy has named Windmill Harbor an official port of call. I urge all Bolivians to patronize this marina. Be careful though, Harbormaster Jake may give you a driving test befofe you can dock.

Oct., 2016: I award Windmill Harbour Marina FIVE STARS only because there's no option for Six!

I, along with another boat, sought shelter from Hurricane Matthew at WMH traveling down from Charleston. The facility was great, and we were treated like royalty by the residents who rode out the storm with us. Harbor Master Jake made certain we were safe and offered us alternative shelter. The marina survived fhe storm when marinas all around us suffered greatly.

Lee, CEO of the SC Yacht Club, graciously opened up the Club and it's bar to us. While I'm not wishing another hurricane on us, it was our good fortune to have been able to take our boats to such a great safe harbor. We hope to visit Windmill Harbor again and again.

Management response:
Thank you for the positive review Captain Bob! We were indeed very fortunate to not suffer much damage to our marina or vessels through the hurricane.

We have a unique mix of the marina, the yacht club and the residences here that form a welcoming boater's community and we're very happy you were treated well here.

We look forward to seeing you again in the future, in more relaxed circumstances!

Mist beautiful Marina and the South Carolina Yacht Club is a must. One of the cheapest places for fuel for us.

safe, beautiful marina with friendly, helpful staff, 2017-06-11

Elan, Capt. Steve and Lynne, Cohasset, MA
One of the few marinas locally that was not damaged in the hurricane. Very helpful dock staff for fuel and docking. Easy to come thru the lock into this beautiful community. Just stayed one night as we were heading south. We will visit on our return voyage.

Wonderful Retreat from AICW, 2017-06-04
Captain: , Verona WI (292)

We were here for a week 5/12-5/18/2017. We very much enjoyed our stay. It's so nice to get away from the tidal changes and wakes. Their own lock to the harbor was unexpected but very very easy with bumpers all around so no need for fenders. We were greeted at our slip and tied up in a jiffy. The staff was exceptional and we were given a welcome packet with a cooler bag and some can coozies as well as phone numbers for various services. The marina is in a gated community so is very secure. There is a free laundry but can only be used after 1pm as the pool staff from the Yacht Club does towels in the mornings. There is a great walking path with benches and swings around the basin. Unfortunately there are no stores or restaurants nearby with the exception of the Yacht Club. We did not eat there so can't comment on it. Luckily we had a friend visiting so had transportation to check out the area. Would recommend checking it out if you are in the area.

Sorry to Leave, 2017-05-30
Captain: , Hilton Head Island (20)

Had my boats in Windmill for about 10 years. Have relocated, so have moved the boat. Excellent facility and staff. Thanks for years of careful attention to detail, particularly the doack walk by staff that looks for boats in throuble

Management response:
Thanks for the kind words Bill. We miss having you around and all your help heading up the PHRF races in the spring and the fall. Stop by and see us if you are ever back in the area!

Safe retreat from current. Beautiful., 2017-05-05
Captain: , Baltimore (181)

This is an excellent stop in a marina that is protected by a lock. Check its size restrictions. Our 13.5 foot beam fit easily. The staff was very competent and relaxed. Access to a pool and good showers. Only minus is the distance to any other highlights of Hilton Head. The wildlife preserve is a long walk, but made for an excellent morning of birdwatching.

Management response:
Thanks Bigote. Indeed our lock is 75' x 19', but other than superyachts and beamy catamarans, we can accommodate a wide range of boats. We're glad you enjoyed the amenities and working with our team. You're right about the distance, we're tucked away a bit, which some prefer. But many of our transients have used Enterprise rental car / Uber to get around the island. Thank you for the kind words and hope you make it back. PS - we've had some eagle sightings lately on the premises!

First Class Resort, 2017-04-13
Captain: , Denver (200)

WOW! We were very impressed with this great marina. Their own private lock that is fully fendered all around allows you to escape the ICW into a beautiful marina surrounded by beautiful homes. NO tieds, NO currents, NO wakes, and everything very spiffy. We loved this place and will return.

Management response:
Thanks Berrlin. We've heard that some are intimidated by the lock, but as you remarked, it's fully fendered and we offer lines to hold onto if desired. And once inside, no tidal currents to deal with and the surrounding homes offer quite a good windbreak. We are glad you enjoyed your visit and look forward to your return!

Awesome marina, 2017-03-01
Captain: , Charleston (80)

First rate services, good fuel prices, and ideal shelter. Added bonus is the use of South Carolina Yacht Club bar and dining facilities. The marina is spotless and the docks are in excellent repair. Uber provides readily available transportation to other parts of Hilton Head Island as well as to nearby Bluffton and Savannah at reasonable prices.
MV Seaquel.

Management response:
It was a pleasure having y'all stay with us. Safe travels!

Fantastic Marina , 2017-01-26
Captain: , Confetti, Kadey Krogen (1719)

We stopped for a month while traveling down the ICW. The marina was fantastic! Staff were great - When we made reservations on the phone Jay was very welcoming and explained the lock and entering the marina. Upon arrival all marina staff were very friendly, professional and accommodating. The lock is a quick entryway into the marina and provides perfect storm coverage. The docks are well maintained and so are the bathrooms/ showers. There are a few bathrooms which makes for easy access to most of the docks. The folks living in Windmill Harbour were also very friendly and it is a very friendly community for dogs. Great walking/running trails The community is also gated but if you have someone coming in to visits by car, the marina staff will call in a pass for them. One day we had family and friends coming to visit and one person has difficulty ambulating. The marina staff told us to call them when they arrived and they would pick her up on their golf cart and when she was ready to leave to call them and they would bring her back to her car. It was wonderful! Great wifi coverage all over the marina. Great visit at WHM. Look forward to returning. Great customer service.

Management response:
We enjoyed having you guys. Wish you the best in your travels on that beautiful Krogen. Stop by and see us again!

Great Place to Stop on the ICW, 2016-12-23
Captain: , Clayton, NY (75)

We stopped at Windmill Harbour on our way down the ICW in the fall and were given a warm reception. We were traveling with a group of about 20 boats participating in Wally Moran's Sail to the Sun and the folks at WHM gave us the royal treatment including a pizza reception the night we arrived. If you don't mind locking into the harbour, it's a great stop. Try for a slip close to the restrooms etal.; some of the slips (L docks, I think) were a long ways from the services.

Management response:
We had a great time hosting the group and we're glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately due to the limited space, and the size of the group, we had to put you out in the hinterlands. Stop in on your way back north and we will try and get you a better spot. Safe travels!

The Best Marina i have seen any where., 2016-11-28
Captain: , Bronte Harbor Oakville Ontario (203)

This is the best marina I have been in. These people treat you like your royalty. I would rcomend this. The price is right. The facilities are clean. It's a well protected area with pool and sauna.

Management response:
Thanks for staying with us, we enjoyed having you guys. Hope to see you on your way back north!

Best place, 2016-06-15

Best Marina since Buffalo, Ny.
Lots of nice touches not found elsewhere.
Great, courteous, helpful people.
Dining at the sumptious SCYC is a treat

Management response:
Thanks Captain Richard! It was a pleasure meeting you on Tuesday. We look forward to seeing you on your way back up to Buffalo!

A Slice of Paradise, 2016-06-12
Captain: , Erie, PA (160)

Fell in love with Windmill Harbour and it's great marina, SCYC, staff and the community first time we visited, and have decided to make it our winter home port.

Management response:
Thank you Captain Tom! One member of our team came down from Lake Michigan (stopped by your home port of Erie en route) and now calls Windmill Harbour his new home port for the same reasons. We look forward to seeing you in the winter.

Awesome stay, 2016-04-30
Captain: , Newport, RI (80)

Gypsea Winds. 4/27/2016

What a beautiful place to stay. The marina was extremely helpful. You have to go through a lock to enter. We have a 6 foot draft no hd no problem leaving about 1 1\2 hour before low tide. There is no current inside the marina and no tide so getting in the slip was no problem as well as getting off and on the boat. We had dinner at the yacht club. It was excellent and reasonable prices. This is a beautiful area. Only stayed 2 nights and would love to come back and stay longer. Need to take uber to really get around but it is readily available. You also need passes to have friends visit. Very safe place. Jude the lock tender was really nice and very helpful. Thank you Jude and Jake for making our stay there so pleasant

Management response:
We're elated you had a pleasant stay and had a chance to also dine at the South Carolina Yacht Club. As you mention, as we're in a residential community, you'll need Uber or Enterprise Rental Car to get to nearby stores (Walmart, Groceries, West Marine, Propane Refills) or restaurants - but more and more transients seem to be using Uber. Really happy your found our staff to be friendly and helpful - that's what we strive for! Please come back again and spread the word about Windmill Harbour! Thanks & Fair Winds

A Five Star Gem!, 2016-04-18
Captain: , Chattanooga (220)

Starting with the"lock" to protect you from the tides, this Marina is spectacular. There are no restaurants on the grounds, but the development around the Marina rivals any in the world. Security is high. Staff is super friendly. In warmer weather the pool and pool deck would be very inviting. I would like to come back here and stay for weeks!

Management response:
Hi Ron - thank you for the 5 star review. We'd love to see you back for an extended visit! We'll be looking for you. Y'all hurry back soon.

Wish we had time to stay longer, 2016-03-18
Captain: , Fernandina, FL (448)

Great marina! Jake and Zach were both a great help. Lock keeps it very well protected. No tide or current or wind due to surrounding buildings. Arrived Sunday afternoon and left Tuesday morning so didin't get to Yacht Club. No dinner Sunday. Not open Monday. Not many transients so usually have shower/wash room and laundry to yourself. Beautiful pool. Only drawback is not close (walking) to anything but Uber is on the island and responds quickly.

Management response:
Thank you Roger for your kind words. We're glad you enjoyed your short stay and couldn't agree more about the protection from the elements our marina provides. Hopefully next time you can stay longer and try dining at the South Carolina Yacht Club. Also thanks for the tip on Uber - a great alternative to a short term car rental.

Professional and Responsive Harbormaster, 2016-01-11
Captain: , Apollo Beach, FL (10)

We purchased a boat that has been kept here for 10 years and our dealings with the Harbourmaster, Jake McMillan, were professional and timely. He calls you back and emails you when he says he will. He helped make our transition from HHI to FL a smooth and pleasant one by working with us to keep the boat there another 1/2 month before we could have it transported.

Management response:
Thanks TJ. Glad your transition was smooth and that the Windmill Harbour team was professional and timely. We're relatively new to using all the features of Active Captain so this management response was not as timely as it should have been, but we are striving to improve our online presence. We look forward to a return visit!

Our Favorite Marina, 2016-01-02
Captain: , Chesapeake City, MD (530)

This place is hard to improve upon as its in a great location, VERY protected, beautiful homes that rival any you will see at harbors in SC. Top that with great people running the harbor (Jake and Zach). When you come into the lock, don't worry as they have nice rubber bumpers and lines for you. The ride up and down is smooth. You may have an initial surge for or aft....but it quickly reverses and the largest or smallest boats ride up and down with relatively little motion. We docked a 30' sailboat here in the late 90s and just returned with our 42' cruiser. Brought back great memories and it has gotten even better with age.

Management response:
Thanks Jay and Tanya. Great to see you guys back on your beautiful blue water cutter. The lock is a unique feature but shouldn't intimidate boaters from coming in - thank you for your comforting comments on locking in and out. Hope to see you guys again!

unique experience, 2015-11-20
Captain: , annapolis, MD (120)

going through a lock, into and out of the marina is a unique experience. Inside it is very protected. Long finger piers with power and water on the end of the finger so bow in for all boats makes sense.
Going to sepnd a month ther in the spring if they have room!
Zac and Jake, the dockmasterts are very helpful. South Carolina Yacht Club meak was great.

Management response:
Thank you Mike. We do get many transients who need to "park the boat" for a month or so, while they attend to other needs. The protection of our harbor from the elements, the security of the grounds in a gated community and the proximity to airports at Hilton Head (HHH) and Savannah (SAV) we feel make Windmill Harbour the perfect place to do just what you are planning. We look forward to your return!

Great Marina - well protected, 2015-10-30
Captain: , Hull, MA (720)

The entire staff at Windmill Harbour is great. We especially thank the dockmaster ZAC for his help. The marina has a lock so there is no tidal change or boat wakes that you will have to deal with. Best night sleep we have aboard. The marina is very quiet aand located in a basin surrounded by homes. There is an very nice olympic size swiimming pool and tennis courts for your use. The facility has very nice showers and a small laundry facility. ( 1 dryer/1washer). The South Carolina Yacht club is located here and .offers lunch and dinner and Sunday brunch to transients from Wed thru Sun (cash or check only). You can also an enjoy a mile walk around the basin to enjoy the homes and other boats.
You will neeed a car to get around Hilton Head. We rented a car from Enterprise and they picked us up and dropped us off at the Marina-very good service

Great marina and great staff, 2015-09-05
Captain: , Moss Creek SC (10)

I rented a slip here for about 5 months while waiting a slip at my home marina. Windmill Harbour is a well protected marina. Lock access so no current or tide. Also, the harbor is surrounded by tall homes so wind is virtually noneixtent.

Harbor Mastor Jake and his staff are the best and extremely friendly and helpfull. I never had to wait for lock-in and out unless another boat was using the lock. Jake and staff were very quick to provide lock and gas services.

Slip rental rates are competitive with all local marinas and better than many.

Very nice but out of the way, 2015-04-25
Captain: , Nowhere,OK (1314)

Its an interesting marina to get into, they have a lock that you use. Fixed docks, but with the lock controlling the depth it's not a problem. Dockhands were great, quick to help out. We had a large part delivered and they took it to our boat on one of their carts.

You'll need a car to get anywhere, Enterprise is happy to pick you up from the airport.

We ate at the SC Yacht club on site. Food was very good, the crab soup was some of the best we've had.

One of a kind, 2015-01-11
Captain: , Hilton Head, South Carolina (533)

This is one of the few locked marina's on the east coast and is supurb in every way. Docks are privately owned, by HM rents them on a space available basis. This is home to the SC Yacht Club. No ability to walk to town etc. A good overnight stop.

Absolute top of the line, 2014-09-17
Captain: , naples, florida (90)

Been here many times. As others have said, very safe, very clean, you are in a gated community once you pass through the lock. Only drawback is that you will need a car to get to restaurants, grocery etc but easily aviailable at the airport about ten minutes away. One of my favorites.

our overall favorite!, 2013-08-02
Captain: , taylor lake, texas (80)

We have stayed at many marinas. This tops them all. It is very secure, clean, well maintained, constant water level, attractive garbage cans convenient to boat, great dog walk areas, gorgeous surroundings and friendly, helpful staff.
The negatives are there is one washer/dryer in a shed. Not in a really user friendly area. Also, you would need a car. It is not bikeable or walkable to anything.

You won't find a nicer marina, 2013-02-01
Captain: , Hilton Head Island, SC (377)

Since this is one of the very few "locked" marinas on the East Coast, you can forget about tides (except for ingress and egress) and currents while here. Except for the fairway between the Sound and the entrance to the lock which is about 5' at MLW, you'll have about 10' throughout the marina.

The Dockmaster, Jake, and all of the employees are super-helpful and friendly. We never had to wait for them to lock us in or out of the marina. A few minutes heads-up on the radio, and somebody was at the lock by the time we arrived.

The marina iteslf is very sheltered both because of the lock and the surrounding buildings. Our boat was there as Hurricane Sandy passed offshore on its way north, and the marina barely felt its effect.

You can make use of the South Carolina Yacht Club facilities adjacent to the marina if you are a member of the Club or a participating club. It is a first-class operation.

Excellent facility, 2012-02-14
Captain: , Hampton, VA (116)

One of the best marinas we have seen. Although all slips are privately owned, they do accept transients who are granted dining privileges at the adjacent Yacht Club. For anything else it is a bit away, so a rental car would be needed for an extended stay.

Well protected marina., 2011-06-14
Captain: , Chesapeake (80)

If you can get here during their working hours this is a very well protected marina with their locking system to get into and out of the marina.

Great southern home for the boat, 2011-03-13
Captain: , Nashville, TN (290)

Kept our boat in the marina for a year while we attended to other things. Very secure marina with no current, which is rare in this area. Plenty of help available for boat projects. Basin is surrounded by homes so wind protection. Docks are fixed concrete but no tidal change in basin. SC Yacht Club in basin with reciprical privleges if you are a member of another club. First rate facilities

Windmill Harbour & SCYC, 2010-06-02

This is the home of the SCYC. Great food and protected Marina with all conveniences. Need to lock in and out, so no current. Call Windmill lock on VHF14
