Reviews for Wilmington Marine Center
Positive Change, 2017-03-18
Captain: , wilmington, nc (41)

At the end of 2016, this excellent, protected location experienced a major change for the better. The yard operation, which had been justifiably criticized, was replaced by an all new team headed by Hank Hinckley. if the name sounds familiar, it should be. Hank brings a lifetime of experience to boat building and repair. He also brings a commitment to customer satisfaction to which I can attest. Marina operation remains in the able hands of Mick Loch, Dockmaster. With this change, the three amigos (Skip Fry, Hank and Mick) offer safe, current free dockage at very competitive pricing. Whether transient, live aboard, or needing repair or service you would be hard put to find a better location in the Wrightsville Beach/Wilmington/Southport area.

Great spot, No services., 2016-01-03
Captain: , New Bern, NC (486)

We stayed here for 6 weeks while working on boat and medical issues. Marina is well protected from the elements with great floating docks. Little current for this area. Marina itself is very small with no Amenities.
The boat yard (not part of the marina takes up most of the real estate. Dirty, noisey and heard from more than one person not very good. However, they did order a part for me which I need quickly. Habor master Mick is a gentleman and will do almost anything he can to make your stay more enjoyable. Stores. laundry and resturants will require a car. Everything is about 5 miles away. Uber and taxi services are available if needed.

Great Marina (especially for transients & cruisers), 2014-09-23
Captain: , New York (20)

Can't say enough about Wilmington Marine Center, especially the friendly staff. Skip and Mick are top notch guys and always greet us with a smile every time we arrive (twice a year on the way N and S). WMCenter is a few minutes N of the ICW but well worth the detour (just time the current and its no prob). It's by far the most protected marina around and our choice spot to leave the boat for a few weeks while we head home or do repairs. The Wilmington Airport (ILM) is awesome, close, and pretty cheap. If you need a few days somwhere without a ripple, want to tie up and forget about the boat while you go home, or leave longterm... WMC is pretty perfect. Entrace is super well marked. We draw 6.5, go in with a rising tide, and have never touched.

Sweet little hide away, 2013-10-09
Captain: , Neversink NY (260)

I was told this was a well protected Marina and was not disapointed when pulling in nice little marina. Meet at the dock by Mick with a smile and a hand could not ask for a more knowledgeable and helpful staff. Alittle away from it all and no lundry but thats why we carry bikes.
After being in the yard a couple weeks and watching the workmanship that came out of Bearing Marine I had Tim and crew do some Fiberglass work and a Bottom Strip with Barier coat. I was very happy with both, Bottom was striped with their blaster than recoated came out great and a very messy job was keep neat clean as possible with all parts not being blasted masked off. One of the best bottom striping systems I have seen. The Fiberglass work done was on both port and starboard sterns where the hull was opening up under Running Backstay tangs. Grinding out the old glass and rebuilding in a manner as to support a greater load, while remaking the tangs to cover a greater area with matching back plate. The glass work was blended in well and the gelcoat match in was great, ofcourse we had to polish the rest of the boat to bring back the luster on the old gelcoat, and the metal work looks great. Very happy and I would highly recomend.

Great Protection and Super Staff - but no Laundry!, 2013-08-22
Captain: , Rochester, NY (493)

Stayed here for the Christmas trek north, then hung around tinkering through January.

This little marina is clean, has great protection and a top-notch staff.

* No laundry - I'd give them five stars - no SIX stars - if they just had a dadgum laundry!

Friendly harbormaster Mic, hauled us around when we needed transportation, though - mighty nice!

* Navigation can be touchy at low tide if you're carrying more than six feet of keel.

* WalMart and Lowes are a bit of a trek.

* Steven's Hardware stocks lotsa marine stuff, but it, like the local West Marine, is a real hike!

* Super-professional staff, including the repair pros at Bearing Marine. This former aircraft repairman was mighty impressed.

* Special Kudos to Mick, the Harbormaster for his wealth of marine experience, his local knowledge and his willingness to go WAY out of the way to get us to and from WalMart, Lowe's, Steven's Hardware, the LAUNDROMAT and grocery shopping.

(Don't miss Steven's Hardware!)

* Well protected marina - no current, no waves.

* Very friendly live-aboard neighbors.
(Say "hi" to Chris, Joe and Wayne on the North side!)

* Very quiet and very secure at night.

* Great place to catch up on all those diddly repairs and freshen-up projects you've been putting off.

Gorgeous sunsets!

Friendly pelican, heron, kingfishers and cormorants.

Did I mention, tho ... they have no laundry!

Too Bad You Are Hooked to Bearing Marine Service, 2013-01-13
Captain: , New York (60)

After being towed up to the Wilmington Marine Center, I was under the impression that Bearing Marine, which is the repair facility located wholly inside the "marine center" was all one operation. It turns out that they are a separate entity. I was there for 21 days, and in the end the initial problem, replacing the shaft and prop, was completed. BUT a repainting of the boot stripe and a touch up of two spots about 6 inches long and 2 inches wide turned into a nightmare. After giving them three opportunities to fix the problem (they turned two small touchups into a basic complete mess of one whole side of my hull) I just left. On two consecutive days they sent the apprentice (he spent 12 hours and made a huge mess) and then the head painter (who spent 12 hours and still had a mess on his hands). When the head guy quit for the day he could only say that it was as good as he could get it, full of spots, and that was that, I was stuck. And you know something? Even after giving them over $6000 Tim the manager and the paint "expert" came to the dock and threw me my lines. No apology, no reduction of bill, nothing. I had the touch up done to perfection in Miami for a little over $700. It took one half of one afternoon with a "professional" painter, who also felt the bootstripe job was a hack job as well. I relayed this to Tim, the big boss. A month later, no reply. Some operation they have there. So, I would avoid this place at all costs. There were some issues with the prop job as well, but I won't go on. There are other yards on the Cape Fear River. Keep going up the river, you'll perhaps find one that stands by their job.

Nice Marina, 2013-01-09

This marina offers wonderful protection, great river views, and a first class staff. Its only con is you need a car when staying here.

Overall 4.5 stars

Excellent Stop, 2012-12-04
Captain: , Norwalk, CT (10)

Extremely well protected marina. We weathered Irene here in 2011 without a scratch. Skip and his staff are very professional & helpful. Great place to leave your boat if your trip is interrupted, which has happened to us twice. Plenty of rental cars in the vicinity & Wilmington is only a short cab ride. It has become a must stop for us just to decompress on the trip north & south and definitely the place to head for if bad weather is on its way.

Great Marina, 2012-11-07
Captain: , Victoria (60)

This is a great place to leave you boat during hurricane season. Well protected on all sides. Great staff, floating docks good power and internet.

Irene Prep, 2011-08-31
Captain: , Port Aransas, Texas (998)

We had to leave our boat and return to Texas for medical reasons during hurricane season. Irene came calling and Skip Fry and his crew took care of preparing our boat for the storm. Not only did they do so but it was done as if the boat belonged to them. That is a rare service but given the other preparation requirements, it was well above the call of duty. The marina is designed to be as safe in storm conditions as any we have seen from Texas to Wilmington.

Great place and well protected, 2011-06-01
Captain: , Warsaw, Ky (875)

Excellent marina with helpful, friendly staff. We left our boat here for 9 months for the winter and while we had repairs and maintenance done. Skip Fry, the marina owner, and his dockmaster Alex watched over our boat while we were there. They do daily dock walks to see if there is anything on the outsdie of your boat that needs to be addressed. They will even go into the boat if you wish to do a more in depth review. Facilities are clean and well maintained. Docks are floating.

Great place to leave your boat for an extended period of time. Well protected and secure. Locked gate.

DeMann Marine service is within walking distance. They are a Cummins repair facility and do excellent work. Had work done by them and we are well pleased.

We also had our boat detailed by Ultimate Yacht Services-Wrightsville Beach before resuming our Great Loop trip. These folks did an excellent job and I would recommend them to any and all who need to have detailing work performed. They do the work they say they are going to do and at the agreed upon cost. Their phone number is 910-620-0622.

Enterprise Car rental is very close.

Safe haven, 2010-11-19
Captain: , charleston (831)

We left our boat here for almost 2 weeks. It is a safe, protected marina with gates locked at night so no foot traffic. Staff very helpful and friendly. Facillities clean and adequate. Only drawback is that it is several miles out of town so a car is needed if you want to get around. Wilmington is a pretty town.

Great Boatyard, 2010-10-15
Captain: , North Myrtle Beach, SC (3210)

and very safe from hurricanes, etc. No places to shop or eat within walking distance though.

Fuel stop and pump out, 2010-06-03

Wilmington Marine Center, 2009-10-14
Captain: , Pasadena, MD (1496)

Excellent marina with helpful, friendly staff. New floating docks. Five foot resident alligator lives along the riprap retaining wall; we call him "Fred." Full mechanical services available on site.

Well maintained..., 2007-07-23
Captain: , San Marino, CA (15)

Is a well maintained marina in a safe harbor. We are leaving our boat at the marina for a few months (summer 2007) while we take care of business in southern california. Our first impression is good and we have found the personel to be very helpful. The only reason for 4 stars is that there is not a restaurant with in walking distance and the marina is out of the way. Will up date this review after our stay.

Safe and secure, 2007-01-24
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (66)

If you need a safe marina in the Carolinas, this is it. The marina basin is enclosed which means no wakes or currents, the dockmasters walk the docks and log-in each boat daily, the land access is fenced for security, and the location is far enough away from the ocean to provide good hurricane safety. Downtown historic district is about 3 miles away. Stores and other amenities are about a mile. Full service available on-site. The Cape Fear River is beautiful!
