Reviews for Wilmington City Docks
Giant Logs coming, 2017-06-29
Captain: , Myrtle Beach, S.C. (32)

Price was cheep but giant logs were coming down the river and the current was pushing them @ 5 knots coming into the boats tyied to the docks. Six of them hit my boat and called the city they never returned my calls. Try the other docks not in the current. Great view and nice downtown easy to walk...

Location, location, location, 2017-06-26
Captain: , jacksonville, FL (340)

This is the place to stop to see downtown Wilmington. Howeverr, the current and chop from the riverr is constant--not annoying to me but it would be to some. There is no wi-fi, but you can go to the desk at the Hilton and ask nicely for a wi-fi coupon code and they'll give it to you. Our code was hilton2017

Even then, tne wi-fi wasn't very good.

The price is certainly right, but if you want a 'marina', ths is not for you.

I would definitely stay here again for the location.

St Patricks Day Weekend , 2017-03-22
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (986)

2017 season underway. RT Jones got a big promotion with the city but left the docks in great hands with Jonathan Batts being the new dock master. This trip we experienced some freezing temps and had no water upon arrival. Johnathan and his team quickly fixed the problem for our 6 boats. Thanks guys!!

2016 cruising season underway. Rt Jones and his staff are the best. Go out of their way to help! Great location. A must stop over.

What a wonderful weekend! A true professional staff and great representative for the City of Wilmington. Located in the heart of downtown, the docks are walking distance to everything. Brightly lite docks and security patrols makes security a non issue. Highly recommend this destination.

Bump in the night, 2016-11-05
Captain: , Salem Ma (790)

Right on the downtown riverfront with it's pluses and minueses. Easy in on a floating peir. Water and power (power extra). Close to the downtown area with lots of resturants. No real store in walking distance but there is a small convience one and a super Walmart is a $9 Uber ride. Lots of ruver current with pretty big logs (trees) going by and aganist the boat (you will see the same log more than once0, Can be noisy with the people on the Riverwalk who of course stop to look at the boats.

Be sure to tour the battleship North carolina. It was more interesting than the Wiscison if you did that in Portsmouth,

Hilton Inn Docks, 2016-10-29
Captain: , Annapolis (3379)

We were assigned to tie up at the Hilton. Excellent location. Close to the action but not in the middle of it. This is a fun town with a lot to do. No access to provisioning or marine supplies. Price seems a bit much given no shore side amenities. But if you are looking for a weekend get away with good restaurants, shopping and nightlife, this is the destination for you

Nice visit, 2016-09-17
Captain: , Havelock (24)

Great service from the Dockmaster. The only thing negative I have to say about this location is there was a tremendous amount of debris constantly coming down the river. Had to re-direct a 15 foot log that had wedged between the boat and dock. Wilmington is a great and historical town with a lot to do and see. We will return.

Short term dockage???, 2016-08-29
Captain: , Raleigh (192)

Would have liked to have tied up for about two hours or so to eat at some of the downtown restaurants but could not get dockmaster to answer the phone.

Where else would you dock??, 2016-08-23
Captain: , Tracys Landing, MD (266)

This is by far the best place to dock when visiting Willmington. It is central to EVERYTHING. Restaurants, shopping, fun. The slips are easy to get in and out of and the dockmaster was very helpful. We will definitely be back here.

Right in the middle of things., 2015-10-28
Captain: , Morehead City (390)

We stayed 5 nights. The docks are easy to approach even with the current running in the river. RT Jones, the dockmaster, is very helpfull. We used the good wifi from the Hilton. Lots of shopping and restaurants within walking distance. There is a trolley bus available.

We were able to time our arrival and departure to use the current in the river. We left at slack high and in our slow 6.5 kts boat we peaked at over 10kts before we got to South Port.

Disappointed, 2015-09-11
Captain: , Green Cove Springs,Fl (104)

Had a very hard time getting someone to answer telephone or the radio even to make reservations. We did eventually make reservations at which time I was told to call dockmaster on 16 when we were approaching docks. I called and called, and kept trying to raise someone on 16 as was requested but never did get an answer. Winds were 15-20 and docks pretty much inaccessible as boat was being pitched continuously against the dock. Might be okay on a calm day.

Very nice and helpful staff (RT) and neighbors, 2015-09-10
Captain: , Seven Oaks, South Carolina (245)

Update: The wave action was jarring the boat throughout, so we stayed only a few hours before we moved to Port City Marina. Right in the historic district, easy walking to many restaurants and other interests. No WiFi available from marina. This is owned by the city, and is therefore public to any and all. Very strong current and associated debris hitting the hull. Very iffy power, kept popping the dockside breakers. RT was very welcoming and took the time to show us various places of interest on a map. Lot of rocking and wind.

Wilmington is a must go!, 2015-07-06
Captain: , Little River SC (586)

Enjoyed staying downtown Wilmington for two nites. The floating docks were awesome. We stayed right downtown and were within walking distance to the many restaurants and bars. There is a lot to see and do in Wilmington. You can dinghy over to the Battleship NC. Great town theatre where we saw a very talented group perform Mary Poppins. The dock master was great and there is an information booth right by the docks to give you allthe info needed to see the sites and attractions. A must vist up the Cape Fear River. Time the tide so you are not fighting the current from the river and the tide coming in as you go up. Time an outgoing tide going back down. It's about 3 hours from Southport for slow moving trawlers. Plan so you can stay more than 2 nites

Worth the trip up river, 2015-05-16
Captain: , Port Credit (40)

We had to clear customs and so were forced to make the trip up the river, something we never would have done otherwise. Found great service from the dockmaster, good docks, and a vibrant waterfront vibe. You need to pick your tide, as the ebb can be three knots. The current still runs fast at the city docks, but docks run along the river wall, which makes docking a little easier. It would be tough to work a boat in when the docks are anywhere close to full.

Lot's to do, 2015-03-27
Captain: , Southport, NC (916)

RT Jones the City Dockmaster is an outstanding host. The views and the restaurants are fantastic. No shower facilities are available so plan accordingly.
The current in the river is very strong and there is often timber debris present, when leaving, be sure to check your transom and bump the vessel in gear prior to untying from the dock to ensure no debris has been forced under your boat from the current.

one more thing, 2014-04-27
Captain: , Panama City, FL (605)

We agree with previous reviews. RT is great, lots of logs, no security problems but lots of lookers and foot traffic... Reminded us of Grand Haven wall. Must add that great condiments are in Fire and Spice Kitchen store in the Cotton Exchange behind the Hilton and a great Italian deli /cafe on Front stream just east do Market with super eats to go. Not much but milk in Village market. Farmer's Market in season was fantastic with home made and home grown goodies.

Convenient City Docks, 2014-02-26
Captain: , Bayou Bonfouca, LA- Great Loop Cruiser (708)

We stopped in here for a quick day trip to tour historic downtown wilmington and ended up staying for 3 days! We loved the convenience of the dock to local restaurants and bars.
I would recommend this stop.
One of the previous posts mentioned the debris, there can be lots of it around your boat at any given time. But after the tide change...
I would give it 5 stars but no facilities

Nice and Quite, 2014-02-22
Captain: , Saint Augustine (70)

I pulled in mid-week. Staying for a week. The dock master met me at the dock and helped tie off in front of the Hilton Hotel. I am the only boat on the dock. Easy hop to the heart of the historic downtown. The warm weather has people walking the boardwalk enjoying the sun and fresh air. No bath house. Able to pick up WiFi from the Hilton. Occasional wake.

What a great city, 2013-09-25
Captain: , Marathon, FL (1264)

So many restaurants, so little time. Wilmington is a great walking city with lots to do close to the docks. Recommend the docks next to the Hilton for a quieter time. The docks were in excellent condition. Dockmaster RT Jones is very helpful. No showers or laundry though. Be sure to check around your swim platform and bow before departing. Lots of very large logs float down the river and tend to gather near the docks due to the current.
Renting a car for provisioning is easy thru Enterprise. Park on the street after 6:30 PM for free.
Recommend Dock Street Oyster Bar for just about the best Oysters Rockefeller I've ever had. And painkillers.

Nice stop for visiting Wilmington, 2013-09-04
Captain: , Sanford, Fl. (887)

Update for 9/3/13. We got up this morning planning to leave with the 9am tide change and found our saloon door wide open. We had been boarded during the night. They tried to take the TV which was bolted down, but they settled for our laptop we use for our chart plotter. We had become complacent with our security measures and did not verify that the door was secured nor did we turn on our simple cockpit alarm. Either of which would have probably foiled the robbery. We had done so every other night we were there. Luckily no one was hurt and the damages are not that great.
8/30-9/2/13 We stopped here again to visit friends. They are rebuilding the docks in several areas. The visit was about like it has been in the past. It was a holiday weekend and we were continually getting waked. But the worse offender was the boats that give "boat rides for $5". We finally called the company and it got better for a couple of hours then it was right back to business as usual.

We stayed here again for 5 days starting May 31. Every thing is about the same as my previous post but I should mention floating logs. In all our travels we have never seen as much floating logs, trees, old pilings etc as we see on the Cape Fear River. Both times we have stayed here we ended up with parts of a tree wedged between the boat and the dock. This time it took my wife and I over an hour to get a tree about 10 ft long and 2.5 ft across out from under our swim platform. I was finally able to tie it up to the boardwalk and away from our boat. I recommend you check under your swim platform with a boat hook before you start your engines!

It is not really a marina. Just a dock, power and water. But it does put you right in the middle of everything that is happening in Wilmington. R.T., the dock master could not be any nicer or more helpful. But he is really just a one man show. During his days off regular office staff pick up the slack and they try hard to be sure that your stay is a good one. This may sometimes cause some of the communications problems mentioned by other boaters. Plenthy of places to eat and stuff to see and do!

Great over night stop, 2013-07-30
Captain: , Stuart Fl (10)

Great wall to use for short term.. 30 and 50 amp service

Friendly Staff, 2013-05-18
Captain: , Sarnia, ON (330)

Dock is located in front of the Hilton Hotel, not as flagged. Dock in good shape, and Dockmaster is very friendly who checks you in dockside. Many bars in the downtown district. (not necessarily a good thing) Public transport, bus station convenient to downtown.

We were here for three nights and on the second night confronted two intruders on the boat at 3am. A third was a lookout on the boardwalk. Police were called.

Moderate current.

Definitely Worth a visit to this city, 2013-04-27
Captain: , Lighthouse Point, FL (227)

Wilmington is a very interesting city. A lot of local theater, good restaurants and many historical and architectural sites to visit. We are really enjoying our stay and as has been said before, RT is extremely helpful with docking and things to do.

Great Location, 2013-04-26
Captain: , Richardson, TX (552)

The dockmaster, RT was very helpful and friendly and so were people (Jonathon and Cynthia) who filled in for him on his days off. The one negative thing about this dock is the fast moving current which we knew about but it still caught us by surprise when we pulled away from the dock. We took the advice given in another review, to face the bow south but the current still grabbed us and we hit the dock and damaged our teak. In retrospect we should have throttled up, lesson learned. A great place for breakfast (there don't seem to be many within walking distance, just coffee/deli places) was "The Basics" at 319 N. Front St. Nice place, great service, good food. The biscuits and gravy were excellent. We also enjoyed the "Front St. Brewery" good food and beer!

Very Enjoyable Stop, 2013-04-07
Captain: , Beaufort, S.C. (640)

This is a very dog friendly city. Although there is not much grass in the center of town if you head north on the Riverwalk you will find grassy areas. We like to ride our bikes and enjoyed an 8 mile round trip ride to and around Greenfield Lake ( a Wilmington City Park). We also took an hour and rented a canoe - a fun way to spent the afternoon.

Wilmington Docks, 2013-01-31
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (50)

Had the chance to talk to Mr. Jones the Dockmaster in Wilmington today, VERY helpful and nice guy.

Fun spot to stay, 2012-07-08
Captain: , little river, sc (50)

Right in the middle of downtown Wilmington. Convenient to many good restaraunts and lots do to. Prices are reasonable and R.T. Jones (dockmaster) is always very accomodating.

Nice dock, power & water, right downtown, 2012-05-02
Captain: , Cape Coral, FL (1521)

We called twice for a reservation before arriving and twice to check in with them once we arrived, never got a call back. Found out later that the dockmaster has Monday and Tuesdays off and the supervisor is supposed to be picking up messages (which clearly they weren't). When we arrived there were no other boats on the dock so we had it all to ourselves; good power and water. Located right in the midst of the historic district - good restaurants, shopping, lots of people. Boardwalk is a bit noisy until late at night with lots of people walking by, and even though the bridge is a ways away, the bridge noise is loud, especially at night when everything else is quiet. A south wind against the outflowing current can set up waves in the river, so it can be a bit bouncy, but overall a nice place to dock.

Old River City, 2012-02-08
Captain: , SeaScape Marina (310)

Plenty to do in the area. Walk up and down the Board Walk and visit shops, and dining. Night life abounds. Strong tides evident in the area.

Beautiful City, 2012-01-26
Captain: , Wrightsville, NC (270)

Wilmington City Docks are located in the heart of the entertainment district, walking distance to all the city has to offer. The docks are located adjacent to the river and subject to all boat traffic wakes. There are no showers available. The dockmaster is extremely courteous and helpful.

Downtown Safety., 2012-01-12
Captain: , Downtown Wilmington NC (25)

The Wilmington Police department now has permanent patrols of the city docks untill 3am.

Great spot to stay the night, 2011-12-05
Captain: , wilmington (49)

Easy access to restaurants, shops, trolley and info booth.

Cartmen Food Delivery, 2011-11-08
Captain: , Wilmington (73)

We are the Downtown Wilmington Golf Cart shuttle, delivery, concierge business. While docking at the City Docks we provide restaurant and grocery delivery also perscription pickup and errand running. We sell tickets to all the Museums, Historical Homes, Tours and Concerts. Cartmen will keep you connected while you are here. We can also provide car service with advanced notice. Call or Text 910-264-4442 or email Delivery service available at Wrightsville Beach.

Great location- keep an eye on wind, 2011-07-26
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (10)

Great spot to overnight. To echo others comments regarding surge: Tide going out along with river current can be nasty especially during a blow from the south. If you moor at docks closer to the Hilton, it tends to be much, much tamer

A remarkable stop revised, 2011-06-28
Captain: , Port Aransas, Texas (998)

The City dock is in the middle of the action. Dockage is available in less active locations along the dock. Just ask when reserving a place. People watching is great. Several very good restaurants are within a few blocks. You are warned to keep your boat locked and be aware of the high traffic in the dock area.
As a result of staying over a week, we have an observation and suggestion: if possible (as determined by the tidal current when you arrive) tie up so that you face south along the dock. We experienced a significant wave action facing north upon our stern when the tidal current meets a north bound wind of any strengty. We have a swim platform that actually submerged a time or two putting water into the cockpit. If our bow was facing south, that would not have happened. Tie up bow south for a quieter time.

Wilmington City Docks, 2011-05-10
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (180)

We have stayed at the Wilmington City Dock several times. RT Jones, the Dock Master, is always there to meet you. We have stayed at each dock, Market Street and Hilton. They both had their advantages. If you do not mind a short walk, the Hilton Dock is very nice and quiet. Market Street Dock is in the heart of the action. We will be back and will look forward to exploring more of Wilmington.

LOCK YOUR BOAT!, 2011-01-02
Captain: , Between Boats, USA (623)

I hate to say it, but after a great experience in downtown Wilmington at the City Docks on New Year's Eve 2010, we were robbed by someone who entered our boat at 3:00am while we slept.

When we arrived, the dockmaster was great and the location was a very good downtown hotspot, but we failed to use good judgement and payed the price. There was supposed to be a security patrol but we never saw it. I am glad nothing more than missing belongings (laptop, cell phones, wallets, etc.) was all that was taken. It could have been worse. PLEASE, when you stay here, secure your boat!

As a side note (the reason for 2 starts and not 3)... be aware that for $1.25/ft. there are NO showers and NO bathroom provided. It's a nice place for a day stop, but it will be a long time before we return.

Come and Stay, 2010-10-15
Captain: , North Myrtle Beach, SC (3210)

If you have never ben to Wilmington, it is well worth the trip up the Cape Fear to visit for a few days.

Great experience, 2010-06-02
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (297)

Dockmaster R.T. is great. Very friendly and extremely helpful. Can dock right at Sat. morning farmers market.

Great dock in downtown, 2009-06-16
Captain: , Wrightsville Beach, NC (368)

Great place to dock and explore old Wilmington. Be mindful of security late at night because it is right in the downtown business district.

12/28/08 - Jim R, 2008-12-29
Captain: , Holland, MI (116)

Very good location. Right downtown in historical district. Many restaurants etc. No real grocery store nearby just a little market with stale stuff. New floating docks & services, friendly dockmaster.
Only issues are the tame homeless people who hang out here, the exposure to strong tides and currents and wakes caused by the small boats crusing up and down the river without regard to their wakes.
