Additional info:

Approach

It is recommended for yachts to motor the final 3 nm of the river on the rising tide and favour the outside curves of the river. The channel is marked and dredged to a minimum of 1mtr below CD. The river bottom is soft mud. The marina is just before a bridge, so you can't go past. A new Bascule bridge was opened in May 2013 crossing the lower Hatea River. It has a clearance of 6.5m at high tide, so vessels over this height may have to have the bridge raised to enter the Town Basin. Bridge control can be contacted on VHF 64.

Reviews for Whangarei Marina
Still a Wonderful Place to Stay, 2016-11-30
Captain: , Hamilton, Ontario (612)

We stayed for the 2016 Cyclone season and found this marina awesome if you need a place to get things done or just want to relax. The locals can't seem to do enough for visiting boaters. In one direction is a world of available boat treasures, and in the other are literally miles of beautiful walking trails and pathways... After cruising non-stop for 3 years, we could not have asked for a better place to spend a few months...

Worth the effort, 2014-02-12
Captain: , New Zealand (1087)

Although it is 12NM from the Whangarei Heads the trip is well worth the effort. Anyone who has cruised America's Intra Costal Waterway (ICW) will feel quite at home. It has all the elements - brown water that gets quite skinny in places and even a Bascule bridge. The Town Basin is a superb development and getting better. We finished up on a berth right outside Reva's restaurant within walking distance of shops, restaurants, bars and supermarkets. The staff are friendly and accomodating, and the berth rental is very reasonable.
