Come in between the fixed dock and the gazebo. Most slips require a hard right turn after the gazebo. Space is extraordinarily tight, but the marine's staff is exceptionally skilled at managing to pack the boats in and out safely.

Reviews for West Wind Marina
West Wind Marina, Columbus Day Weekend. , 2016-10-10

The staff was very helpful both arriving and exiting the marina. The facility was very clean and had every thing we needed. Overall a great time!

A little tight in the basin to spin my 53' but the staff was very helpful getting the boat tied up. The night club is loud but just makes me wish I were in my 20's again. I'd stay here again.

Tight and prepare to raft, 2015-09-22
Captain: , Barrington RI (127)

Wanted to share a review as I just stayed there for boat show weekend. Made reservations here as it was last minute and only place with space. I think I learned why. I have a twin screw sport fish that's pretty nimble. And yes it is VERY tight if they put you inside on what I learned they call "the raft". The marina consists of a large fixed peer that extends in loop with a very narrow entrace from the North. They put larger (45ft+) boats on the outside. That access is pretty straight forward. But if you go inside it gets very tight. The inside is lined with a floating dock along the entire perimeter. While it has some fingers, they raft a larger number of boats stern to in the western inside corner. Getting in and tieing up here is very tricky. With any kind of wind it can be downright dangerous. Further, unless you are the last boat in, you are BLOCKED in until the raft breaks up. No one at the marina explained how I would be blocked in. When I arrived I told them that I needed to leave at 8am Sunday to make an important other engagement. They assured me not a problem as raft was breaking up early. Well... I didn't get out of there until 11am, blocked by 5 boats and missed my event. Not happy about that at all. I was second to last boat out. Last guy out was heading back to Boston and got a much later start than he wanted. Staff was very nice, friendly, and helpful but disorganized and a tad inept. I would stay here again in pinch but only if they could put me on the outside or near entrance to basin and it would likely be the last call I make after I try everywhere else in Newport first. On the noise note, we were there in September. Dockside nightclub didn't open either Friday or Saturday. We had a couple of drinks at The Deck which has a nice view and live music during the day but quieted down early at night. So was a non issue.

Had a great time at West Wind in Newport, 2015-05-25

Stayed at West Wind for a couple nights at the end of the Volvo Ocean Race. They were very nice -- it took us much longer than we thought to get there and so we didn't arrive until around 6:30. Luca the dockmaster stayed (or came back) late to help us in and tied us up. He gave us a slip right inside the entrance, although the wind was whipping so badly we were lucky to have a pretty easy landing even so. I noticed the other comments about a tight marina -- I've been in much tighter so it didn't seem crunched to me. As you can see on the charts, it's kind of "C" shaped but once you're inside it's not bad if you take it slow. They let us stay an extra night no problem, and were very generous about check-in and check out times, but then Newport had emptied out as soon as the Volve Race was over and so the marina was only hosting four or five boats besides ours. I expect the previous comment about strict in-and-out times were when the marina was packed in the high season. The showers and bathrooms are not the Ritz, but they're okay. The previous comments about noise -- never a concern. It was actually very quiet, even with the deck restaurant and bar in full swing (they make great drinks). It was not a bad walk to the heart of the waterfront for us (to Bannister's Wharf), but if you have any walking or mobility issues the trek does get a little long. The Newport pump-out boat came by just before we left, very convenient -- although it only runs 9:00 to noon so plan ahead.

Party Marina, 2015-01-12
Captain: , Newport, RI (310)

Yes - I have stayed here a couple of times as a transient when there was no space available elsewhere - this is where the party is - the basin is very tight.

Good experience, 2014-09-12
Captain: , Christmas Cove ME (120)

We made an impromptu call for a slip on the day of the Newport Boat Show, not expecting to find vacancy. We were accommodated and found all to be in good order. Pleasant and helpful dockmaster and good facilities. Dinner on "The Deck" was equally good.

Noisy & Un-Organized, 2014-07-27
Captain: , Mattpoisett (10)

We arrived a little early at 11:12 AM on Friday, July 25, 2014 and radioed Brooke at the West Wind Marina. We had a reservation, but were told they were moving boats around and we had to wait a few minutes. The few minutes turned into almost an hour of holding into the wind with other boats that began to arrive. Two boats that arrived after us were allowed to cruise right in. We finally tied to an outside dock at the entrance to the inner slips. A dock boy said it would be five minutes while they moved boats around and showed me the open slip just inside the entrance were they would put me. I asked if I could move into the slip right then, but was not allowed. At 12:15 PM they were finally ready for us so I moved right into the slip that had been open the whole time. Three dock boys tried to help, but none of them knew what they were doing. With two screws and a bow thruster I turned and backed into the slip with no problem. They said they had me and to kill the engines which I foolishly did, only to have them pull me astern and drive my swim platform into the dock. The one on the bowline pulled the boat into the slip too far and the one on the stern line had tied it off to prevent the boat from moving forward. They had no line to stop my 32,000 lb boat from moving astern. I wound up tying my boat up myself. We wasted an hour and a half just trying to tie up in a slip.
The docks are very old. I tripped over a screw that had backed out. The band started around 9 PM and played until midnight. None of us got a very good night sleep because of the band and the yelling during the cleanup. My youngest kids were tired all the next day. It took me three days to make up for the lost sleep. I will not go back to West Wind.

Quieter this year, 2014-07-26
Captain: , Wickford RI (200)

As of July 2014 the deck bar and dance club are closed so it's not the party scene described in the earlier reviews. There is still music until midnight but it's not the thumping bonga bonga of past seasons. That said, the people watching is not as amusing. You can get a better nights sleep, but if you come to Newport in the summer to sleep, you are kind of missing the point.

At the center of the action, 2013-10-15
Captain: , Jamestown, RI (277)

A well run marina right in the center of things. Because of it's unique shape, you really get the feeling of being rafted up with everyone else. Tons of great resteraunts and bars within walking distance. Dock hands are very skilled at getting boats in and out of a very tight setup. It does stay noisy until after 1am on weekends, but the easy solution to that is to stay out until after 1.

Very Nice Marina but can be loud to the early morning, 2012-01-18
Captain: , Apponaug, Rhode Island (274)

My wife and I agree with most of the other reviewers. The marina is easy to get to, the facility is very nice and the people are great. The good news is the bar is right at the edge of water at the dock seawall provding outstanding views. The bad news is the bar is at the edge of the dock seawall. Since the bar attracts a young group, the party goes on all night and the staff cleaning up the bar continue to drop glasses and shout at each other until 2-3 AM. We found it hard to sleep. If you enjoy late night activity and outside sound does not affect you, the marina is a good choice.

Pleasant stay, 2011-12-23
Captain: , Huntington (455)

We have stayed at West Wind twice. If you are going to host people who are driving to the marina, it is one of the best in Newport in terms of parking. The restaurant was very easy to deal with and made some great food for our gang. It is a relatively new marina. We will go back for sure.

good spot for a Newport visit, 2011-04-14
Captain: , New Smyrna Beach, FL (143)

We stayed 3 nights during the '08 jazz festival. The staff is competant and accomodating. The restaurant on site is very good, though a little noisy from the bar, which is a classic meat market. Close to everything. It's on my Newport "yes" list.

Nice people..Nice place, 2009-08-02
Captain: , Chesapeake Bay, MD (311)

Very nice people who will go out of their way to help you. Family run marina with a caring touch. On the south side of Newport but just a short block to the main drag, shops, eats, etc..Bars right next door as well. My dink engine died and they located a mechanic for us and took my wife into town on their launch to pick up our steamed Lobsters. I would highly recomend this place to anyone looking for a marina in Newport.

Wow !, 2008-07-28
Captain: , Huntington, NY (2310)

2008: Ditto, Cathy continues to run an excellent marina. Glad to be back.

2007: This place is great. The girls loved the shopping, food, and scenery at this south end of Newport.

The marina is well run by Cathy and her large crew of competant dock hands. They remember your name and do other things (we had flowers delivered to our boat) to provide a very personal experience.
