Reviews for West Basin Marina
Excellent Marina, 2016-10-15
Captain: , Grand Haven, MI. (32)

It's small. It's quaint. It's clean and well maintained. The only negative is getting to the downtown area, which is very nice. I'm happy we had bikes with us as it is 20 minutes by bike and much longer time walking. If only the City of St. Joseph were to provide shuttle service or better yet a convenient dinghy dock close to downtown. Then I would give this marina a 5 star rating.

Pretty location., 2016-07-31
Captain: , Naples, FL (682)

This marina has a very peaceful and attractive aspect being surrounded by trees with numerous picninc tables on the shady gras verge at the end of each slip pier. It is not easy to see the entrance from the river and there is some weaving around to do to find the fuel dock, where we were asked to go first to check-in before being asigned a slip. The laundry is small but functional and the heads and showers are clean and practical but not airconditioned. Wifi is very good.
If trains bother you then get out your earplugs as the line runs right by the marina with three or four trains per night going by.

Beautiful marina, walk to St Joeseph River Yacht club., 2016-05-23
Captain: , Michigan city, In (90)

We were here May 19th & 20th 2016, very quaint and beautiful marina. I gave 4 stars and not 5 only due to distance to town. Staff very friendly, Andrew at marina very helpful. Fixed wooden docks, warning, dont go barefooted lots of splinters. Water and electric dock side. Did not see a laundry on site. Ice machine at marina office. Fuel and pump out available. Office, on back half of the building has a nice restroom facility and flat screen TV accessable by code given upon registration. Showers in seperate facility via short walk, very clean and well maintained, also code needed for access. Nice walk to pier and lighthouse from marina. You can long walk or taxi to town since it sits on opposite side of entrance channel to marina. However friends we were with had a dinghy and it was awesome!! We simply deployed the dinghy and had a comfortable ride across the channel where they have easy to find tie up locations in a park like setting that will make a quick and easy walk into town. The town by the way is beautiful with great shops and pubs. Silver beach is awesome and you wont want to miss the indoor carousel. If you are a member of a yacht club check for resiprocity through your club, the St. Joseph River Yacht club is beautiful, with a huge pool and deck area, a wonderful restaurant and staff that is very friendly we ate here two nights and loved the service and selection of great food.

Cute marina but be careful storing here, 2016-03-20
Captain: , Muskegon MI (169)

This marina is in a great location is very charming. They have a small clubhouse with clean bathrooms. They also have a nice ship's store. The issue is when they store the sailboats they don't support the keels and this causes some major problems for the tabbing in the boats. I've seen multiple boats that have had the tabbing ripped away from the hull since all of the pressuer is on the hull and not the keel.

Good harbor but it's a trek to town, 2015-08-06
Captain: , Burnham Harbor, Chicago (251)

We stayed at West Basin for a 3 hour lunch stopover and the harbor is very nice and convienient unil you step ashore. The walk to town takes you all the way to Rt 63 and over a long bridge to even get to the edge of the restaurant & shopping district. I will have to research a better choice before going back.

A friendly marina, 2015-07-26
Captain: , South Haven, MI (40)

I've been visiting St Joe for years, always staying at West Basin. The docks and facilities are well maintained and always clean but the best aspect is the attitude and friendliness of the marina staff. The Marina adjoins the St Joe River YC another great place. The only negative is the distance to downtown St Joe (restaurants, shops, etc)... a good 20-30 minute walk.

Felt welcomed, safe & secure in a storm, good pricing, 2015-07-20
Captain: , Iuka, MS (1120)

Pretty area. Very friendly staff. NO surge from the lake even thru 2 large thunderstorms. Most convenient location, before the RR swing bridge. Only downside is the distance to town. We walked--most would have accepted the marina's offer to give a ride.

Safe, Protected and Easy, 2014-09-16
Captain: , Everett, Washington (824)

We stayed a night in mid-September as the launch pad to cross to Chicago. The marina is right off the channel but the breakwater provides great protection from swells and wakes. The overall protection was great. Their moorage price is the same for all the DNR operations even though it is run by the city. The laundry was free - the second time this happened in 7 months of the Great Loop. They offered bicycles to use. Staff was great.

Tired of lift bridges, 2013-10-16
Captain: , Cedar Point, Sandusky, OH (300)

Great stop if you are tired of waiting for Bridges. Car will come from Wolf's marine to take you to the largest Marine Store you have ever been to. Can also take a cab ($25 each way) to a Walmart, etc.

Superior Marina, 2012-09-09
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (1696)

All of the other reviews have it right. Great place. We were here for a week while weather system passed through. On one day on the lake there were 30 kt winds and 8 to 10 foot waves near shore. (We walked to the shore and saw for ourselves. Very nasty.) We hardly noticed it in the marina. Great wind and wave protection.
The only thing that keeps me from giving this a five star review is that fact that you do have to depend on the staff to get you into town for shopping and such. But as already described they are happy to drive you whereever you need to go. No problem.
By all means do not hesitate to include this in your cruise plans.
Note: Wolfs Marine Supply is a vast store that is part first run supply store, part overstock and liquidation store, part consignment store. Lots and lots of stuff. Pros - free shuttle service, selection of more obscure stuff, friendly staff, low prices. Cons - zero navigation stuff, lack of engine filters for diesel (better off going to NAPA), no Racor filters. We still ended up dropping a couple of benjamins.

great marina but not close to town, 2012-08-26
Captain: , Cape Coral FL (4176)

Great marina - free laundry and they even give you detergent ! Low price $52 for 41 ft boat. Nice lawn surrounding the slips.
On weekends there is only one person working so dont expect them to answer the phone or radio. That one guy is also running the gas dock. We didnt like the situation at the free wall so stayed here. Good choice. But to walk to town, its 1 mile to the bridge. During the week when more workers are here they have a van and will drive you to town. Clean restrooms. Very nice dock with brand new decking. Water/power is at the end of each slip easy access. Would give it 5 stars if it were located in town.
Get diesel around the corner at Pier 33 - cheapest in town.

Great stop-over, 2012-04-05
Captain: , indiana (331)

Excellent service. Great new slips and power. Very accomodating. Town is a trek if the trolley isnt running.

Quiet place to stay, 2011-09-03
Captain: , Naples, FL (1096)

The marina itself is located in a lovely green setting and neighborhood. Laundry and electricity/water was included in the dockage fee. The town of St. Joseph was subdued and did not offer much in the way of reprovisioning or restaurants. Town was dull is the best way to describe it. However, if a marina stop was necessary, the marina was well worth it. The personnel were friendly and offered to drive us to the grocery store.

Good stop before entering Calumet River, 2011-08-17
Captain: , Warsaw, Ky (875)

Helpful dock hands. Fuel reasonably priced. Clean well kept grounds.

Fairways could be a bit tight on a windy day.

Staff will drive you to grocery.

Easy to get into, 2010-08-30
Captain: , Stuart, Fl (435)

They had plenty of slips, cheap diesel and a clean facility.

Great town, wonderful marina, 2010-08-17
Captain: , Tellico Marina (290)

Try to get on the north side in the protected harbor, if Lake Michigan gets rough, you will be rocked on the main channel.
Nice clean place, staff great, town close by.
Dog friendly

First rate, 2010-08-13
Captain: , Foley, AL (985)

Who could ask for more, nice docks, fuel, pump out, free laundry, free WiFI, friendly staff, van ride to Martins grocery store, Wolfs Marine supply will pick you up, nice bilke path to the city and very protected from the wind and boat traffic...

Very Nice marina, 2010-07-30
Captain: , Chicago (79)

New docks 2009, clean washrooms, fuel, friendly staff.
Free WiFi
A 1 1/2 mile walk into town only downside.

Quiet, well kept, 2010-07-29
Captain: , Chicago (270)

Newly restored, quiet, clean, great laundry facility. Bikes available for ride into town.

Good Place, 2010-07-01
Captain: , Grove, OK (337)

Stayed there after trying another marina and the wall. Helpful staff. Baths OK and it had a free laundry. Docks were in final stages of being revamped when we were there. A few things yet to be done, but nothing critical. The docks are high. We have high gunwales and we had quite a step up to get on the docks. No shopping nearby but you can walk to town. Rates were good.

West Basin Marina, 2009-10-15
Captain: , St. Joseph, MI (814)

Very nice protected marina with necessary services. Town is on the other side of the river and a long walk, but a good beach is close by and the marina is a nice quiet place to stay. Currently (October 2009) constructing new docks, new office and ships' store.

not expensive, 2007-08-07
Captain: , Key Largo (5304)

No shopping nearby, but nice town. bars , resturants, small boat store at marina,
