Reviews for West Basin Marina, MWR
Hidden Gem for Military , 2017-07-28
Captain: , Verona WI (282)

We arrived here yesterday not knowing what to expect. Had made reservations well in advance and when we called to say we were on our way they gave us our slip assignment and directions. Upon arriving we called and someone met us at the slip to help tie us up. The marina is fairly empty, slips are on fixed docks which are in very good shape. Everything is neat, tidy and clean. Restrooms are nice with 2 separate bathrooms in both the men's and women's sides complete with showers. The staff Taylor, Patrick and Marty are fantastic. They offered to give us a ride to NEX and commissary as well us take us to get a rental car. They do dock walks several times a day and said if we are gone they will keep a close eye on the boat and replace lines or fix minor issues if they see any. The Exchange/Commissary area is about a 2 mile walk or an easy bike ride. The dockage fees are extremely reasonable and we are looking forward to exploring the area.

Nice MWR marina. Great Location., 2017-07-24
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (400)

Nice military MWR marina. Great location midway up or down Chesapeake Bay.

First, a couple of updates for the Active Captain marina info. First, fuel. West Basin Marina no longer offers fuel; no gasoline, no diesel. Pumps still on the former fuel dock, but hoses are removed. Storage tanks next to marina office still there, but empty. Marina manager, Mardy, reports that there are no plans to repair or return fuel services to West Basin Marina.

Second, pier layout. As you enter the basin, along the north wall of the basin the docks to your immediate right are E-dock, slips 1-35; slip 35 is closest to the basin entrance. Docks along the basin western side are docks A-D; A-dock at north end and D-dock at south end. We were assigned to E-dock. These seem to be the newer docks, are floating, with wide slips. Dock is in good condition.

Marina has a VHF radio set on channel 16, but uncertain whether they actively monitor. Calling on telephone was always successful. We attempted two VHF hails on arrival before entering the basin, but without success so just came in. No dockhands to help tie up, but as with most military marinas, if anyone is on the dock they will normally help with an arrival tie up.

Head, shower, and laundry house is just behind the A-D docks, up the hill in the trees. Two private full baths in each man's and woman's heads. Clean and comfortable. Laundry room, with one washer and one dryer, located behind the head-shower side. No walkway to laundry room side, just follow the grass around the building. It is a three minute walk from E-dock to the bath house, but passes right by the trash dumpster, so combine your trips.

Marina is located in a fairly isolated, rural location on the base. At least a mile and a half to the commissary and exchange. The Rivers Edge conference club facility is a short walk and offers food, drinks, and a Starbucks, but hours of operation are limited to normal workdays only.

Mardy and his assistance in the marina office are all very nice and helpful. They seem to keep the place in excellent condition.

We will return. A very good alternative to Solomons Island if you are looking for a quieter spot.

Finally New Management, 2017-06-16
Captain: , Stuart, Florida (599)

New management making changes (this Marina Manager knows about marinas and boats). Dedicated transient slip now will fit 60' plus boats on old fuel dock (fuel pumps soon to be removed). Manager Mardy (yes spelled correctly) hailed us entering the breakwater and grabbed our lines too. What a change from before!! Still no access to facilities on base without transportation. If you want a convenient spot for a period of time with great docks and power, a place to walk the pooch, you'll find this a great spot once again. Great WIFI too.
We'll be back.

Large MWR Marina, 2016-08-07
Captain: , Beverly, MA (1242)

Lots of slips, and huge basin to turn around in. Shower and Heads are combined into cubicals 2 each per sex. WI FI signal is strong. Some of the slips can be narrow. The pilings have huge nuts exposed and could dammage the side of your boat if not careful. Finger piers are about 10 ft. Long way on foot to anything on base.

Best Marina Around, 2015-07-09
Captain: , Key West (10)

We have travelled the Bay for 20 years plus, this Marina has the best facility and cleanliness around. The Staff are AWESOME , this Base rocks ! Last Year they had COLOR BURST, AMAZING, This Year they had Memorial Day event with Band, they are the BEST As always Go Navy Beat Army !

Very Basic, Good for an Overnight Stop, 2015-06-02
Captain: , Suffolk, VA (171)

Needed a stopover on our way down the bay and didn't want the hassle (and cost) of the Solomon's Island marina. Came into Wst Basin after closing and left before opening (it was a Sunday) so never saw anyone. Was given slip assignment over phone along with gate codes, etc. While they have some floating docks, seems transients are put on the older woooden piers (which are mostly empty). Was quite a walk to the restrooms/showers and an even longer walk to the floating docks and office. No services of any kind. Be sure to ask for a description of where your assigned sliip is! The numbers are not visible form the fairway (they are on the power pylons)...we had to move after we pulled in when we finally found our number! If you need it pump-out is very accessible on a T head! Navigation in and outt very easy with plenty of depth. One interesting thing is that there is no one checked our IDs, no one asked who we were.

Great place to stay, 2015-05-22
Captain: , Apponaug R.I. (908)

Sue and Cory could not have been more helpful. I had to move my boat over to A dock. Sue came aboard to help me dock the boat. Clean rest rooms, Wi-fi, super friendly.

Really nice and quiet...except for the jets!, 2014-10-19
Captain: , Rock Hall,Md (60)

We stayed here for a night, and we're very comfortable. Sue and Cory were so helpful and welcoming and the price was great. Cory gave me a ride up to the Commissary and waited for me. Bathrooms are good. It is adjacent to the NAS and they were flying some of the time, but discontinued between evening and morning and, we actually kinda enjoyed watching them.

Would definitely return there.

Very Nice Facility if YOU are Military! (Active or Retired), 2014-06-30
Captain: , Kemah, TX (622)

Excellent facility! The downside is you are two miles away by dinghy from ANY shopping, restaurants, or repairs. The facility has fuel, pumpouts, and water, but you have to move your boat to one side to get pumped out, and another site for fuel. My wife was able to obtain transportation from the marina office easily to go to base facilities. The staff is friendly and very helpful.

Quick refuge off the Bay, 2014-06-27
Captain: , Northport MI (405)

Great marina for those with Military ID cards. Well maintained, exceptionally friendly and helpful staff (offered ride to PX/Commissary). Is aways from town of Solomons Island but can't beat the price!

Terrific stay, easy, 2013-09-16
Captain: , Portsmouth, VA (430)

Called ahead, spoke with Sue; assigned slip with floating dock, arrived, paid small fee for our 42' boat, all one needs located at the dock, ie power, water, space. Overnight storms, nonetheless, a good stay. Will return.

Captain: , Annapolis, MD (343)

They have done a nice job of upgrading the marina. Well protected. Can't beat the price

Very Protected Marina - DoD Restricted, 2011-07-07
Captain: , Annapolis (602)

Kept a boat here for many year - weathered hurricane Isabel with no problems - have used T-Heads as transit docks many times from 2005-2011 - new docks built very well - bike to NEX/Commissary - Helmets Required - generally lots of space. Put out fenders if mooring on T-Heads - large bolts protrude through dock timbers.
Call PAX NavySecurity on VHF13 before entering if escalated security at mil bases.

We loved it....can't beat the price, 2010-08-03
Captain: , Melbourne Florida (4616)

We stayed on "D" dock and loved it. Small fixed finger docks, but it beats the price in the Solomons and it is only a 10 min dinghy ride away. People were great and very helpful. We will be back. One of the few military benifits left. New floating docks going in as of
Aug '10

Good Marina for Active Duty / retired miltary & Civil Service, 2008-01-23
Captain: , Patuxent River, MD (391)

Three years here and services slowly but steadly improving. Major rework planned for early 2008 will limit available slips until complete. Gas and diesel on site. New pumpout 2007. No food or ice. Boatramp and new (2006) bathhouse.
