Reviews for Waterside Marina
Laundry facilities would give it 5 stars, 2017-07-26
Captain: , Jacksonville, FL (240)

Great stop and so close to everything. Staff very helpful. We were entertained by customers for the American Rover. Quite a people-watching spot. A big plus--the marina pays for a cab to go to Harris Teeter and to return you to the marina. Love this place but hang on on the finger piers. They're a bit on the shaky and wobbly side. Highly recommend!

Always Entertaining, 2017-07-03
Captain: , Stuart FL (748)

Not much has changed as far as dockage. No apparent upgrades or improvements that are apparent. But that's okay. Depending on the size of the vessel, the slips can be snug. The dockhands are young, friendly and helpful. The men's/women's shower / restroom facility seems limited (one head, 2 showers each), given the size of the marina. It's also at east end of Waterside building is a hike, depending on where you're berthed. What sets this apart is the renovated Waterside "District", central access to downtown and the crowds that enjoy the adjacent park and waterfront. Well worth the stop!

Great Location, 2017-07-02

First class docks! good wifi and location to downtown Norfolk

Great place- lot more than a simple Marina. , 2017-06-28
Captain: , Isle of Palms, SC (314)

6-27-17- Left Urbanna at 5:45 and arrived at Waterside marina-- about mm0- at 12:30. Waterside Marina a great place- very "happening." Lot of activity, noise, ferry horn, but very much ok for us. Had cocktails and app'r at Blue Moon and supper on boat. The large break water keeps wakes down- otherwise be impossible to stay here. Fun to look at all the river traffic- big and little. Really like this place. Tomorrow will go to Wisconsin, museum and town. Docks are very nice and wifi very strong- just be sure to ask to be near the repeater. Drew dockhand very nice, John, dock boss. Easy in and no current to speak of. Strong Verizon. Bath rooms/showers are a long walk away, but are new and nice. Too many good eating places to mention. John suggested the Hells Kitchen for all round good stuff at reasonable prices. Now 8:15 and seems to have quited down and we really feel well being here. Long way to walk dog, but OK. Don't know about courtesy car, etc.. May add to this tomorrow.

Hip and Loud, 2017-05-21
Captain: , Stow, MA (420)

The new Waterside bars and restaurants area include a large patio and band stage and live bands have been playing since 6pm. Very cool for the right crowd. A new band just started at 10:30 pm! Oh, it is Saturday night. Bathrooms and showers are now available in the new building.

Great location but ..., 2017-05-18
Captain: , Port Aransas, TX (1283)

Stayed 8 days, 5/8-15. The good: convenient downtown location, lots to do nearby, helpful staff, shuttle to very nice Harris-Teeter grocery, adjacent water taxi to Portsmouth. The not-so-good: restrooms / shorwers are in portable trailer (not too bad but we were there during grand opening of Waterside Market and trailer was moved away and locked), no real security except cameras in a very public place (at least marina staff is onsite until 9 pm), no parking for marina guests, so if you rent a car, you will need to pay to park in a downtown garage ($13/day, no in/out), laundry is in Sheraton Hotel on 4th floor - a long walk from marina - so I didn't use it.

Fair Marina, not great., 2017-05-02
Captain: , Newburyport MA (10)

Tucked in here to hold out for weather. Docks are tight, fingers are weak and tipsy. Great location but with Waterside building under construction have to walk a few blocks to get to any restaurants. Toilets and showed (2) are in a portable trailer. Not good. When all the Waterside is back up Location will be great. Docks? Not so much. No fuel here.

The perfect Spot for an overnighter and a downtown visit, 2017-03-31
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (30)

Location and chearlful dock handling are top rate. Now with the festival maret place opening in May this will again be the spot to be and be seen and see! Quality docks and quality dock folks!

good transient dock, but no ammenities and full price, 2016-12-22
Captain: , Elizabeth City NC (51)

nice protected floating slips. porta bathrooms and showers which are not very clean. poor wifi. the best part of this marina, isnt the marina at all. it is right downtown, so you can walk to just about anything you need.

Great Location, 2016-10-17
Captain: , Erie, Pa. (1896)

Stop here all of the time, no fuel but if you are looking for a place to eat & shop this is it. 50-60 stores & restaurants in a mall like setting at the Marina. Staff is always great and helpful. They are open late to assist transients. A real good stop. Stopped again 5-1-13. Spent 4 nights here this trip. Everything continues to be terrific.

Here again 10-11-13, people were terriffic and location is great. Nothing changed.

5-1-15 Stopped again, all shops and restaurants closed, their is conversation about a complete redo. Right in downtown and all downtown resstaurants and shops are available. This will be a different stop if Waterside Mall does not reopen but if they indeed remodel and reopen it could be spectacular. Staff continues to be very cordial and helpful.

10-11-16 Spent 8 nights waiting ou Matthew, departed 10-11-16. Great location and staff terrific some pains with construction but plenty to do and will be terrific when complete in 2017.

could be better, 2016-10-15
Captain: , Nashville, Tn (50)

Stopped here on our way south to wait out hurricane Matthew. The floating docks handled the wind and wave action very well. Lots of things to do within walking distance in Norfolk including the Nauticus museum and the battle ship Wisconsin. The construction at Waterside development is on going and will be nice when completed next year. Portable restrooms are furnished and are kept clean by marina staff. Marina offers free ride to grocery store each day at 10:00am. The negatives include two important items: wifi and pump out. We were docked two slips from office and never were able to connect to wifi, others in Marina reported same results. As reported in other reviews, pump out is broke most of the time. Apparently upper management has been told on several occasions that new parts are needed to repair and they keep trying to patch up the old system. No excuse for this on going problem. Otherwise a good stop.

Great Location & Staff, 2016-08-29
Captain: , Arlington, VA (30)

Great location in downtown Norfolk. Easy walk to Nauticus and all the restaurants on Granby Street. Staff was very helpful. As others have noted the bathroom facilities are temporary while the Waterside building is being renovated. They were clean though, and air conditioned. Once the new building is done this will be a 5 star location.

Great Norfolk location, 2016-07-28
Captain: , Hampton, VA (150)

The marina is in the heart of Norfolk so walking to most downtown locations is a breeze. The floating docks are nice but the entire waterside area is being renovated. When this is completed in 2017 it will be very nice but in the meantime everything around the marina is torn up.

Came in here last year on a yacht delivery with the new owners. Outstanding! But..., 2016-07-07
Captain: , Savannah, GA (330)

Returned aboard with my personal yacht and my family this month.
Kind of disappointed that all the waterside stores/resturants were closed until 2017. No laundry room available this year and a trailer with 2 showers. Being a yacht broker, I was very disappointed in the poor wi-fi service. Over a period of a week it was very, very poor. I Had to rely on my hot spot data to conduct business. You might want to consider a hearby marina in Norfolk until things return to the 2014-2015 service levels. A plus is the rates are reasonable taken into the fact of the lack of amenties. The staff is most helpful even though there was only one dockhand on duty for us and our traveling yacht friends to receive lines. UPDATE: Ended up here for 20 days due to a dropped valve on our port engine. John, the Dockmaster was most helpful in our extended stay. We highly recommend Carter Machinery, Co. in nearby Chestapeake. The mechinics were there the day we called! They were able to complete all the repairs without a haulout in a boatyard. The employees are some of the best in the industry. We later found, that Norfolk has much to offer in the way of transportant around the city and many museums and parks are free. There was something to do everyday! We extended our stay to witness the fabulous July 4th festitivies.

Visiting once again, 2016-06-05
Captain: , Olcott, NY (2536)

We love stopping here.
Great marina, nice staff, new renovations are coming along.
Their temporary showers were awesome.
Only downside is that their pumpout gear and accessories can use some upgrading.
Due to the lack of fittings we had a very poor pumpout experience.

Marina is Just Fine, 2016-06-05
Captain: , North Charleston, SC (752)

Reasonable rates helpful and friendly staff and in a great location. Yes, the heads are in a trailer but it's a trailer built for the purpose. It's relatively new, clean andwas well stocked when we were there.

The shopping mall is being torn down to be replaced with a new building. There are dozens of restaurants and shops, including a full sized mall within walking distance.

Gather at the office at 9:45 AM and the marina will caall (and pay for) a taxi to take you to the Harris Teeter supermarket and bring you back.

All thing considered, it's a good place to stop if you want to visit Norfolk or if you'r just passing through.

Good marina for overnight, 2016-05-17
Captain: , Grand Rivers, Ky (2206)

As previous post indicated, the restroom and shower is contained in a small trailer....lacking essential supplies. The pump out is located by the office, if the sllips are occupied in that area you must pump out on the outside wall. If the wind is blowing from the west it will make it difficult to exit.

The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Downhill but usable, 2016-05-13
Captain: , Skippack, PA (32)

The Waterside project has basically failed. The shopping and restaurant building is locked up. The marina is still open, but in need of repairs and maintenance. The wood decking is splintering and at least one dock is held in place with a come-along. The showers are now in a trailer near the marina office. They appeared to be clean. Wifi remains available. Access to a nearby gym is available as part of the slip charges. The staff was helpful and as good as ever. The marina is useful for a stopover on the Norfolk side of the Elizabeth River, but is no longer the facility it was.

Here again, 2016-04-25
Captain: , Solomons, MD (271)

We stop here on each passage. Convenient to many restaurants and Nauticus Maritime Center and a shopping mall. Groceries are a $6 Uber ride. During our visit on 4/23/16 there were no bathroom facilities available due to renovation. Given 4 stars in anticipation that the new heads will be nice and clean. Easy walk to ferry to get to Portsmouth across the river.

Docks OK, amenities not so good, 2016-04-22
Captain: , Louisville, KY (347)

They are doing work on the docks which are in good shape, but the tapered finger piers get pretty wobbly at the outer ends. Heads and showers are only available at the employee locker rooms in the Sheraton Waterside Hotel. A bit of a walk, especially late at night or when it rains.

Our preferred marina in the area, 2016-04-13
Captain: , Oxford, MD (810)

Although the Waterside complex is closed and there is no access for boaters to a laundry or head, this is still a great destination. Restaurants, museums and shopping are a short walk away. If you like ethnic food, try Moraccan Monday at Omar's Carraige House or Indian food at Saffron Indian Bistro. The marina pays for a taxi ride to Harris Teeter grocery store. The Marina Manager, John, couldn't be more helpful. Norfolk is a great stop that gets better with every visit. The city has lovely public spaces and neighborhoods. The Elizabeth River Ferry to Portsmouth is steps away from the marina. Once the Waterside complex is redeveloped and the word gets out, I fear we will have much more competition for dock space.

Great destination, 2016-04-06
Captain: , Stafford, VA (1077)

We stayed at Waterside Marina last year for the 4th of July. This is a perfect location to attend festivities at Norfolk's waterfront park. There are numerous restaurants and a shopping mall within a short walk, plus a great view of boat traffic on the river and navy ships undergoing maintenance at the nearby repair yard.

Waterside Marina still great, 2015-11-19
Captain: , annapolis, MD (120)

We stayed at the Waterside Marina for two days at the beginning of our fall 2015 ICW trip. Slips and dock area still very good, commercially byuilt over 30 years ago. Restrooms and showers in the Waterside facility are better than av erage on the ICW but not resort quality. Dockmaster was very helpful. All of the restaurants of Downtown Norfolk just a short walk away.
The adjacent Watetside Festival marketplace is closed. The city is workin g on a revitalization plan which we all hope brings it back to its original festival marketplace configuration with small shops, local restaurants and casual entertainment.

Convenient to Downtown, but Deserted, 2015-11-17
Captain: , Hobe Sound, Florida (480)

We were the only transient boat in this marina for one night, which probably reflects the fact that its off-season and none of the adjacent shops and restaurants are open during a renovation of the complex. But it's an easy wak to Granby Street where the row of restaurants starts about two blocks from the marina, and there is access to banks, hotels, office supplies, fitness facilities and the like essentially across the park adjacent to the marina.

Good location; marginal amenities, 2015-09-27
Captain: , Fort Pierce City Marina, FL (460)

We spent several nights here while touring the Nauticus & other areas in Norfolk. The tiny finger piers are terribly unstable and not designed for mid-size boats like our 54' Offshore! However, they wouldn't allow us to tie up in the Nauticus area because they reserve that for the big boats.
All of the waterside complex has been vacated now and is a mess. Supposedly, they are preparing for a complete remodeling which will take 2 years. There are restaurants within walking distance and the marina did pay for a cab to get groceries!
Restrooms are hot and pretty run down. Generally, the marina was deserted. Sad.

Well kept secret, 2015-09-26
Captain: , Fort Lauderdale (20)

We had stopped previously at other marinas in the area but were under the impression with the Waterside Marketplace dead, the Marina didn't have much to offer. We were very wrong. It was quiet and peaceful as a marina, with not that much business but the facilities were very nice and everything imaginable within walking distance. The mall, plenty of restaurants, the Chrysler Museum. We only had a few hours of daylight to explore but it's now on our list of places to revisit.

The marina staff was very helpful and pleasant before we arrived and once we were there. Maneuveing to the inside could be a bit tricky but that's the price of added protection from wake. However, we found very little wake even on the outisde, but we were there in the evening.

What was good for us isn't good for the marina as they weren't crowded.

Nice marina..., 2015-08-30
Captain: , Newport Beach, CA (410)

We'd planned to check out three marinas in the Norfolk area in case we needed to winter here at some point in the future. After a quick ferry ride over to Portsmouth to check out the other marinas, we decided that we liked Waterside the best and extended our stay. WiFi and 50 amp power are excellent, quiet marina if you're not on the boardwalk side and staff is available until 10 p.m. Once the Waterside shops are open, it'll even be better. Many restaurants and a mall is within an easy walk.

Good stop for easy access to downtown Norfolk., 2015-08-26
Captain: , Chesapeake, VA (60)

Great staff and docks. Also close to Town Point Park and Nauticus.

Nice place, 2015-08-10
Captain: , Ocala FL (515)

Great place to stop, but with all the restaurants closed it loses a lot of appeal.
The staff are excellent and provide excellent services and assistance.

Good location, poor showers/heads, 2015-08-06
Captain: , Little Creek VA (605)

after staying here three times in the last two years, we probably will not do so again. The staff was good, docks newer and well maintained. The marina is in a great place, but the waterside facility is shops, no restaraunt... The shower and head facilities are old and warn out, and not particularly clean. Tidewater and Ocean Marine accross the river are better facilities with more ammenities.

Great Location, 2015-08-04
Captain: , St Joseph Michigan Pier 33 (40)

Visited at the beginning of August. The marina was empty. Very reasonable docking fee. This puts you right in the middle of everything

Great location. Staff great, 2015-07-27
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (986)

Staff were very helpful and knowledgable about proper docking maneuvers. Can't beat the location for great tourist activities

Expensive, but great location!, 2015-07-19
Captain: , Lakeland (997)

We were here over the 4th of July weekend with our 42' catamaran. We were directly under the fireworks and enjoyed being right downtown Norfolk. The rate is pretty high though and the staff was not consistently friendly. There was some wake from the passing ferries. Overall, we felt it worked for us on the 4th of July (There rates were also doubled on the 4th although it wasn't overly crowded.)

Waiting to be rebuilt., 2015-05-24
Captain: , Herrington Harbour, MD (680)

Went to attend an ALGCA event. Great spot, but the marina is old and run down. Not big, maybe 30 slips, but the best spot to be to see Norflok. Really the only easy place to stop to see the town.

skate boarders, 2015-05-10
Captain: , Baytown (20)

Staff left early. No working power where we had to tie up. And skate boarder all night long. If you have anything over 40 feet forget it

Location, location, location, 2015-01-16
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (435)

It's true that the marina is not in perfect shape and the bathrooms are marginal but the location is perfect for Norfolk activities and our staff (John) was very helpful.
Try the Chartreuse Bistro but be sure and get a reservation.
Also, marina guests have free access to the Executive Health club just across the street.

Right Downtown Average facility, 2014-12-21
Captain: , Clearwater (10)

In the middle of downtown facility has average services no fuel

Captain: , Montreal, PQ, Canada (560)

This is one of our favorites in the area, in terms of downtown location and proximity to shopping and good restaurants. The marina has good docks, but average washrooms/showers... not always clean and in order. You can ride a ferry across to Portsmouth and visit there too.

Nice Marina except for RR, 2014-11-25
Captain: , Annapolis (10)

Great Marina, execpt for restroom

Great Marina and Location, 2014-10-18
Captain: , Annapolis (1465)

This is our 8th trip soutbound so we've see a lot of marinas.

We had a delightful 2 day stay at Waterside Marina. Not sure what the reviewers experienced last month but this is a first class operation. We were met by two dockhands (John and Chad) who were very professional and attentive. As more boats came, they met everyone.

Although the laundry/bathrooms are just outside the marina (next to Hooters), they were very clean. We saw no evidence of any mold. Washer ($1.25) and dryer ($1.50) were both operating.

Waterside Mall is pretty much shut down (not the Marina's fault) but the area is vibrant and far from "seedy". It's an easy walk to hotels, restaurants and pubs. Grandby Street seems to be the hub of everything. Recommend 219 Bistro for great food!

There are 23 boats here and all the shoreside power pedestals are working. Floating docks are nice, if not a little worn.

Overall, a very pleasant experience. We'll be back!

"It will eventually work", as said by the marina attendant, 2014-09-26
Captain: , Woodbridge, VA (209)

After visiting Waterside Marina for years, this will be our last stop here enroute to/from the ICW. Arrival....Upon our arrival in our sailboat, the marina assistance was definitely lacking. Yes, they did raise their hand to alert us where we were going but that was about it. As usual, the winds pipped up as we were approaching the marina but we make it into the slip without any damage or trips to the emergency room. Once docked, the marina worker returned to his office to play video games. Electrical connections....the electrical connections are literally falling apart. When I pushed the connector into the receptacle, it collapsed inward. It took three outlets before we could find one that worked.
Heads....these were pretty filthy with lots of mold on the shower walls.
Pump out facilities....they do not work and the attendant continued to play video games....
Bottom line....don't waste your money coming here...and we will NOT return!

concerned about security, 2014-09-19
Captain: , Beaufort, NC (290)

This is a fine facility which appears to be struggling due to its location adjacent to the all but abandoned Waterside Mall. The docks are well constructed and protected by a bulkhead which shields the marina from the wakes from the very busy commercial and industrial harbor traffic. The marina is staffed by several, college aged, employees who are very helpful. Renters are entitled to a free cab ride to nearby and excellent shopping. The shower facilities are poor and are located in the Mall. The marina is not staffed at night and there are no police patrols. With the lack of people at the Mall and the urban location, security is lacking.

Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (686)

32 feet. Was easy to get in and out of but there wasn't much wind. Toilet overflowed and caused a stench in the bathroom. Good laundry. Seedy area after hours. Starbucks very close with a line out the door in the moning. Nauticus is incredible and just a 10 minute walk. Was only 1 of 3 boats there.

Lousy Restroom Facilities, 2014-05-28
Captain: , Englewood, FL (905)

Stayed 2 nights in May 2014. Docking was easy with 2 helpers, the floating dock was nice. I was amazed at how minimal & decrepit the bathroom/shower facilities were.

Quick Stop, 2014-05-18
Captain: , Auburn, Maine (447)

Steve Lunt on Kathie M
Needed to make a short stop for lunch and crew change. Easy to tie on outside of bulkhead. Free for 10-20 minutes. We needed a bit longer, and for $10 got an hour or two. Dockhands helped us get a taxi, were very helpful. Only negative is that the Waterside Mall is now completely vacant, except for
3 or 4 restaurants. Shame, it's such a nice location.

Nice but limited with helpful staff., 2014-05-16
Captain: , Phoenix (580)

Stayed there for the AGLCA Rendevzous for four nights. The Dock Master was helpful when my 50 breaker wasn't working so he lowned me a 30amp splitter that worked fine. Wooden docks are getting old and showing wear. Do no go barefoot. Close to town and Norfolk offers a free shuttle into and back from town.

Great Staff, Convenient Norfolk Location, 2014-05-16
Captain: , Little River, SC (476)

5/4 -5/9/14 Three (3) staff members were there to dock us in somewhat of a gusting wind. Very knowledgable on docking in not really good conditions. Protected docking from river traffic. Basic but secure bath/laundry facilities.

Nice way to visit Norfolk, 2014-05-05
Captain: , Virginia Beach (50)

Spent Saturday 5/3/14 at Waterside Marina. Nice floating docks plus a lot of fixed bulkhead space. A lot of activity down town, wine festival at town point park, Rover sail Cruise, Sprit of Norfolk, restaurants on Granby St., walk to Tides baseball at Harbor Park and a ferry to Portsmouth. John the Dock Master was very helpful and had his team hustling. Breakfast at D%u2019egg one block away.

Good marina with great restaurants near by, 2014-04-19
Captain: , Fort Myers, Florida (687)

Marina is downtown with walking distance access to many restaurants. Staff is friendly and helpful. Floating docks are in good shape although we were on the bulkhead which was ok. There is about a 3%u2019 tide change which needs to be planned for if you are on the bulkhead. Seawall offers good protection from waves and wakes. Sat through a 3 day blow with winds reaching over 60 on Chesapeake bay. Tall building around the area greatly reduced the wind impact. Didn%u2019t use their bathhouse, so can%u2019t comment on their current status. I would stay here again if overnighting in Norfolk.

Great location, 2013-11-13
Captain: , Annapolis (795)

Marina is right downtown with access to restaraunts, bars, and a shopping mall. Lots of sightseeing opportunities. Staff is friendly and helpful. Floating docks are in good shape. Bathhouse is small and not that great - clean but beat up. Easily four stars if they modernize the bathhouse and replace the two washing machines and dryers.

Water Side Marina, 2013-10-22
Captain: , Quoset Daviseville Naval Yacht Club (250)

Nice marina with easy access, downtown area but well protected with security. Many restaurants in area, first visit but will return.

Bathrooms are a inside mall, little strange arrangement, no washer or dryer, and fuel is available nearby but not at marina.

Marina staff very helpful.

Great place to rest, 2013-10-14
Captain: , Cleveland, OHio (421)

Second time we have been here. Easy access to all kiind of shops including 18 screen movie theater. They will drive you to the supermarket at 10 am. This marina is set up for only transients during the summer season, April to Oct 31.

Pump out at your slip. No fuel.

Waterside Marina Norfolk VA, 2013-09-30
Captain: , Sandwich (722)

Dock attendants courteous friendly and available. Docks new and protected by wave screen. Adjacent to downtown Norfolk. Walking distance to everything. Has daily courtesy shuttle service to and from Harris Teeter supermarket. Washer/dryer but one dryer had a broken latch and the other did not dry completely. Need to fix or replace. Women's showers/bath have no locks on doors and are in need of major renovations. A ton of commercial traffic. Honors MarinaLife discounts.

Convenient Location, 2013-06-30
Captain: , Beaufort, S.C. (640)

The marina is located within a well-protected basin and pump out was available in our slip. It is in a great location for visiting Norfolk. The Cannonball trail passes by the marina and continues along the waterfront with many interesting exhibits along the way. There is a shopping mall with major retailers a couple of blocks away. We enjoyed a great meal of crab cakes at Freemason Abbey.

Waterside Marina, 2013-06-12
Captain: , Oriental, NC (220)

We have stayed there a couple of times. Location is the main attraction; it's easy to walk to most of downtown Norfolk from there. They have no fuel or easy access to it.

The showers are fair but generally clean. They are a fair walk from the dock, across a park to gain access.

No Pool, not great, 2013-06-07

We just didn't get a "warm/fuzzy" at this marina. The location is good. However, there is no pool, the staff did what they were required to do, but lacked in passion for their job and were not helpful when the internet did not work. the laundry and bathroom areas were not clean and in need of some maintenance. The mall is undergoing a change in managment and many of the merchants have moved out.

First time here, 2013-05-30
Captain: , Frisco Co (92)

The staff is some of the best I've seen! good facilities. Bathroom and laundry are not up to the quality of the docks. Easy to find.

Second visit as good as the first, 2013-05-27
Captain: , Port Royal, SC (231)

Terrific location and staff is very accomodating. Laundry and heads are not up to par with the rest of the facility. 2 block walk to a very large mall that has almost everything (no West Marine) and more that a shopping mall should have. Enjoyed a movie while there. Lots to see and do. Norfolk is a waterworld and just enjoyale to see all the vessel activity.

Very convenient but very public, 2013-05-09
Captain: , Bear, DE (230)

This marina can't be beat for easy access to downtown Norfolk. Walk 2-6 blocks for a good selection of local restaurants or dine at the 3 chain eateries right at the dock. We took advantage of the marina's offer to take us to the grocery store, a large, well-stocked Harris Teeter. The marina pays for the taxi fare each way and you share a full cab with 4-5 people. Justin the dockmaster is very friendly and competent.

We were on the inside fixed face dock. Tide swing is 3 feet, which made our preferred boarding door unusable at low tide. Fortunately, we have a second, higher door, but some neighbors were not so lucky.

The public can walk right next to the boat on this face dock, which made for fun people watching, but a few harmless but noisy drunks and skateboarders woke us up late at night. In addiition, the naval ship repair facility across the river is a 24/7 operation. Most of the noise at night was hissing white noise, with occasional loudspeaker announcements, clanging and banging during the day. The ferry also blows its horn four times every time it leaves the dock, which starts around 7:30am.

Lots of big ships out on the river: barges, container ships, Navy vessels. I loved seeing the big boys in action! We'll definitely be back.

Great location, 2013-03-28
Captain: , Port Charlotte, FL (684)

The dockmaster helped us tie up. Marina was mostly empty with just a few boats in slips for winter storage. The Waterside restaurants are okay for chain restaurant food (especially Hooters) but a short walk up Granby St yields lots of interesting non-chain choices. Nauticus is also worth a look, just 2 blocks N along the waterfront. We lost our wifi password card, but we surfed Hooters' wifi with external antenna. There were a few other open signals there too.

Proximity to Norfolk Attractions - Great, the rest..., 2013-03-13
Captain: , St. Thomas, USVI (624)

We have a large, hard to maneuver vessel (53 Gulfstar motor sailor) and the dock attendants, while very nice and friendly, were not experienced and put us in a spot that was difficult to get out of - they could not understand why we could not just simply back out around docks and other vessels. We managed a manual turn around with dock lines and made it work, but if no one was there to help, we would have had trouble. The wifi was terrible and the waterside mall looked almost closed down with many shops and restaurants closed. There were a few restaurants onsite which was convenient, but no security at all. The cleanliness, views and proximity to other attractions would be the only reason to return.

Second Visit 12/28/12: Our first stay at this marina last summer was OK. This time the waterside plaza was still like a ghost town with hardly any stores open (12/28/12), although they did have three restaurants to choose from. The marina was quiet due to the time of year, but we were met by the manager who was very helpful and stayed later than usual to make sure we arrived and got hooked up OK. There is a ferry terminal onsite and a lot of locals mill around the facility at all hours waiting to catch the ferry as well as many locals walking dogs, riding bikes, jogging, walking, etc. If you are concerned about security, this is not ideal, but there is a 24-hour security guard(s) on duty that roam the property. There are no locked gates and there is direct access to the docks so people can literally stand 5 feet away from your boat. There is no fuel here and the maneuvering space can be tight if there are a lot of boats in the marina. We ventured into Norfolk to the MacArthur Center Mall and were able to get an I-pad fixed as well as enjoy the mall stores. This marina is very convenient to downtown Norfolk so if you want to enjoy the city, stay here. Our cats loved watching the seagulls take baths in puddles on the waterfront.

Great Stop, 2012-12-04
Captain: , New Bern, NC (180)

I have stayed here several times in the past and the rates and service have remained excellent each time. A very courteous staff, very good facilities and convienient to Norfolk and Portsmouth ( via ferry). Will stay here next time.

Great Stop, 2012-10-21
Captain: , Little River, SC (1987)

Were here for 2 nights. Visited Norfolk one day and took the very convenient ferry tp Portsmouth the other day. The marina personnel were very helpful, paid for the taxi to get groceries. Shower facilities were clean. Pump-out location is extremely inconvenient.
Portsmouth was great especially the historic Old Town area. Try the Cafe Europa for a fantastic meal and service.

One night stay, 2012-10-09
Captain: , Oriental (270)

The floating docks wereclean and had water and included electric hook ups for $1.50 a foot. We were a little surprised how dead it was around the marina, but it was a cold and rainy early October day. The mall is close by and easy to walk to. The nearest grocery store, a fabulous, new Harris Teeter, is too far to walk to (or bike to in the rain). We asked if the marina has a courtesy car and though it was late afternoon and the car usually makes a grocery run in the AM, the young man on for the night checked and upon determining noone had taken a run yet that day arranged for a taxi ride, round trip on our timing, to and from HT for me and my two daughters. It was quiet and well protected marina as that night the winds were howling but we felt no rocking.

One of the best Marinas, 2012-09-30
Captain: , Bear DE (694)

Stayed here for 2 days, only $1.50 ft incl. 30 Amp Power. If you need 50Amp like we it's $5 a day more. Great staff at the Marina and the best thing there is a free Taxi to the Supermarket and also free to return to the Marina. Can't get any better with floating docks. The Office is open to 10pm. Plenty of restaurants and Hooters and Outback Steakhouse is right here at the Dock.

Great marina! FREE transport!, 2012-09-20
Captain: , Sydney (313)

Where in the world does the marina pay the taxi fare to the supermarket and back???

This wonderful modern marina is in a downtown regeneration area the local government is hell bent on making a top tourist destination so the park areas are lovely and they have a free on call shuttle, called Fred, to take you anywhere in the downtown areas of museums and restaurants. Fred is a cute electric car and has a great tour host type driver, and he won't even accept a tip!

The marina will help you provision by ordering you a taxi to the modern supermarket, and then you ring them when you wish to return... And the rides are FREE!

Convenient to downtown, 2012-08-26
Captain: , Amelia Island, FL (507)

Convenient to museums, shopping and restaurants. The marina was pretty empty when we arrived and the waterside shopping plaza wasn't very busy. The marina itself is fine. The wifi worked fine. The laundry and heads were OK. We'd give this marina three and a half stars if we could. We'd stay here again if the occasion presented itself.

Great location, 2012-07-07
Captain: , Las Vegas (322)

Here twice in the past 7 days and would come back. Good restaurants adjacent and museums galore. And, there is FRED to get you where you need to go. 1st mate went to the grocery and got an historic tour of the area for free. Showers drag the rating down as they were small, dark, and not so clean.

Really enjoyed my stay here, good stop!, 2012-07-05
Captain: , Key Largo (5457)

Was here on July 4th, 2012, had to pay a premium for dockage, $2,50 a ft, pretty disapointed in that! (because of July 4th!)
Loved the marina floating docks, power, wifi sucked (din't work) but what a great place to explore musums, happy hourz dinning, shopping, all good. FRED the free golf card shuttle service is great.
I would come back. Funs spot to stop.

Love it!, 2012-07-02
Captain: , Williamsburg, VA (200)

Great location and great staff! Even in the middle of a storm, the staff were standing by until late(I think it was 9pm) to help me tie up.

Dockhands best of the best, 2012-06-20
Captain: , Topsail Beach, NC (480)

We've stayed here twice, both times for AGLCA Rendezvous and marina was packed. The dockhands here are absolutely wonderful....they know how to get you in even when it is very tight. They are always helpful, asking if you need anything, arranging rides to grocery, etc. Just superb!

As others have stated, it is a very nice location near restaurants. Something is going on in the adjacent park every weekend, but the music stops early enough. Great place to walk dogs, etc.

Grocery is a shuttle ride away....arrange with dockhands. But once you are there it is a first class store. There is a nice mall within walking distance.

Overall a great experience. Only downside is laundry is not great.

Nice place to stop in Norfolkl, 2012-05-24
Captain: , Chesapeake, VA (80)

Stopped there on 23Mar12. Weak current and wind. Good protection from traffic. Only a half a dozen boats where there with 60 births. $5.25 for three hours. Nice grassy area to walk the dog. Bathroom inside Waterside mall along with Hooters and Joe's Crab Shack. Showers and laundry for overnight guests only. Museum and mall close by. Lots to see and do, great area. No gas or repair. Free, cold water in igloo seat top dispenser cooler by office. Friendly staff. Will come again.

Update: May 19, 2012, did come again. Stayed overnight for the VA Beer Fest. Had Hooters at lunch and Outback at dinner. Finally got to use the overnighters only restroom/laundry room. Shower could use a cleaning, mold and bugs everywhere. Starbucks is one block away, good coffee the next morning. Put me in a tight slip, but dock hands where great. Will come again!

Home Marina - AGLCA Rendezvous, 2012-05-24
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (1850)

Very good choice for home marina, but gets a tad crowded and close quarters deep into the marina. Very good staff, friendly, knowledgable and helpful. As noted already next door to some good restaurants, McArthur Mall and attractions. West Marine, Hardware is not close - 5+ miles away. There is MM 0 marine store over in Portsmith, take the ferry - not as well stocked as WM, but they had what we needed or will get whatever you need and deliver it to you at your boat. They have a free daily shuttle to grocery store. As mentioned no fuel but does have pump out.
Lots of great attractions. Nauticus/Battleship Wisconsin and Maritime Museum (Newport. Get there by local bus) are a must. Local bus system is ok.

Excellent downtown Norfolk stopover, 2012-05-09
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (639)

Nice floating docks. Dock hand was very experienced and professional. No fuel. Easy access to downtown restaurants and shopping. We went to Hooters and Outback Steakhouse nearby. We enjoyed seeing the USS Wisconsin docked at the nearby nautical museum. Easy in and out to the ICW.

Good marina, 2012-05-07
Captain: , Cape Coral, FL (1521)

Located right in downtown Norfolk next to the Nauticus and the USS Wisconsin. Nice floating docks (unless you're along the wall). Pumpout at the slip. Very attentive and friendly staff. When marina is full inside, they can put you on the outside wall, but beware the wakes - put all your fenders out. All in all, a nice stop.

Great one-nighter, pricey, 2012-03-22
Captain: , Chesapeake, VA (253)

If you're not going to make the bridges, this is a great place to stop. Restaurants right there, heads available. Scenery is ok. Floating docks or buikhead.

A really good stopover, 2011-12-30
Captain: , Chebeague Island (929)

"Barbara" has stopped here many times and we have always enjoyed the experience. Many bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinity, but better -- an AJ Gator's a few blocks away where we watched the super bowl one year. Good supermarket within a few blocks walk.

Late check in, 2011-12-03
Captain: , Montreal (61)

After a fast, cold and wet sail down the Chesapeake on our way South... we were looking for a warm meal and a quiet night. Waterside fit the bill perfectly. Easy to get to after dark... and with a pleasant and professional dock master there late to guide us in and take our lines... we couldn't ask for more. Joe's Crab Shack right IN the marina... with a low key atmosphere and an affordable menu... made our short stop in Norfolk perfect.

Close to most every thing, 2011-11-18

Good Marina to site see and be right in the city. Good for positioning for next morning's ICW transit. Clean safe marina. Have stayed here 3 seperate times.

Convenient to Downtown, 2011-10-31
Captain: , City Island New York (600)

Stayed one night, no frills but helpful, friendly staff. MTOA discount. They paid for a taxi to take us to and from the supermarket (about $8 on the meter each time) which I thought was GREAT! It was about 2 miles away, excellent produce. We were right in the Downtown area, walk to post office, restaurants and big mall. A quiet night.

A return visit, 2011-10-29
Captain: , Solomons, MD (1290)

We stopped here in Oct. 2009. A great stop with lots to see and do. History and good restaurants in walking distance. McArthur Mall has all the shops. Nice park near the marina. Good for jogging except the weather was bad. Showers and laundry adequate. Rates were good @$1.50ft. elec $3.00. Nice staff, but not out early ...8 help you off the docks.

Beautiful spot to stay, 2011-10-17
Captain: , Greenville TX (580)

This is a wonderful little marina. Close to the parks, mall, and decent restaurants - plus great service. Rates are very reasonable. The only negative is that the grocery store is a distance, they do provide free taxi service there once a day however. No liquor stores nearby at all.

Great Staff - very helpful, 2011-10-10

We recently spend a total of three nights at Waterside and found the facilities and location to be just what we were looking for during our visit to Norfolk. The young people working there helped us in everyway they could to make our visit a great one.....
We will certainly stay there on our next trip !!

I spent a couple of nights here in mid June. Great location, helpful & knowledgeable staff & dockhands, clean showers & heads, and numerous restaurants all nearby. I will definitely stay here the next time I'm going through the area. I was tempted to give it 5 stars but the finger piers are a bit too rolly at the extreme end for my taste.

Great Stop over, 2011-07-25

Protected marina with very helpful dockhands. There was a grocery store just a couple of blocks away - but it closed. The marina has set up a service with a local cab company as a shuttle to a grocery store! Very helpful. And if you are a member of MTOA you'll get a discount!

Great Marina, 2011-05-19
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

We stayed here for the Loopers Rendezvous and were very happy with the marina and the very helpful dock hands. They went out of their way to help us all get in, organized a daily trip to the grocery store, and even delivered us a bag of ground coffee at the end of the week. The marina is right in the heart of downtown Norfolk, close to the Nauticas Museum, but unfortuantely no grocery store within walking distance. I would stay here again, even if it were not for the Rendezvous.

Very Convienient Stop, 2011-05-17
Captain: , Jensen Beach FL (138)

Good place to spend some time. We were here for 6 days for the AGLCA Spring Rendevous. Very helpful staff to help tie up because this is a rather tight marina and they do pack it tightly. The docks are starting to look like they could use some rehab. We had to share our water spigot with our neighbor (the marina supplied the Y valve).

Great place to visit Norfolk from, 2010-07-09
Captain: , Patuxent River, MD (391)

Floating wooden docks, good power. The mall at Waterside seems to be a in downturn with many empty shops. Still has a Hooters, Joes Crab Shack and a couple of other places to eat practically right at the dock. Three blocks to a very large shopping mall and Nauticus. Couldn't take advantage of FRED as we had a child traveling with us - the minimum age for FRED is 8. No pool, but there are some fountians that kids can run through.

location can't be beat, 2010-07-05
Captain: , Boca Raton, FL (1421)

Whether you have just come from Virginia Cut or holding up for the next day, this location is great. Local to good, better and best restaurants and entertainment and a quality facility, you will want to stay here. The only thing that would finish it to be a 5+star facility is if they had Fuel. Just remember that if you are heading South to remember the bridge schedules and not head out too early.

We had a great time in Norfolk and as regards Waterside, in addition to the excellent other reviews about its convenience to many opportunities I would only suggest the excellent Chrysler Art Museum a short FRED ride away and the MAJOR mall with cineplex a mere three blocks away. Norfolk is a friendly helpful nautical centric community and the Waterside is a great way to take it all in.

Convenient location and excellent staff, 2009-11-08
