Reviews for Washington Harbor of Refuge

Excellent facilty.

NPS staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful, much more so than should reasonably be expected.

The NPS has a diesel pump here now so in a pinch you can get diesel but it's not really intended to be sold to the public. The store folks said they could work it out if it's really needed though.

Visitors center is quite nice and well worth a visit if only to see the impressive Fresnel lens and clockwork assembly out of the Rock of Ages lighthouse.

Store was small but reasonably well stocked. Not much fresh stuff but it was still early in the season when we visited.

Stayed at the floating finger docks which we found had ample draft with our swing keels fully down (we draw a tad over 5 foot). Ferry dock clearly had more draft but the floater was nice given that there was a pretty considerable seiche when we were there.

Bathrooms were simple and clean. Did not use the $6 showers nor the laundry facilites.

No diesel available. Finger docks east of the Maine dock are available for overnights. Ranger station and small store for minimal provisions. Need to check in when arriving from the mainland to pay the daily park fees. Moose activity along the shore in the evenings. Good place to begin you Isle Royale adventure.

The dock is deep water on both sides. Ask the rager when/where you can stay; they ferrys come once a day and their dock schedule is often different than what it says on the signs.

Basic marina in a great park, 2012-08-16

Used the finger docks east of the ferry dock. OK for boats with less than three foot draft. No charge for the dock. No electric or water hook up. Bathrooms nearby basic, but OK. Showers for $6 for five minutes. Great hiking and ranger programs. Saw three moose swimming in harbor. Dock is free, but National Park charges $4/person/day even if you anchor.

Excellent stopover, 2012-02-27

Don't anchor in the area off the docks. Park vessels and seaplanes transit through the area.
Good spot to leave the boat and hike this end of the island.
Showers are primitive and expensive but wonderful.
Make sure to catch the rangers talks, lots of island info.
Try and get to dock on the port side facing the dock from seaward, gives more protection if the weather picks up.
You can crew change here with a little planning.

Windigo and Washington Harbor, 2010-12-29
Captain: , White Bear MN and Bayfield WI (88)

There are a ranger station, store, showers, pump out, and gas (BUT NO DIESEL).

Nearby are the Rock of Ages Light House and the wreck of the America.

During a 9 day trip along the whole south shore of Isle Royale, this was the only place we actually saw a moose.

The only real problem with Windigo and Washington Harbor is that there isn't another place to anchor for many miles along either the north or south shores of Isle Royale, so coming here could be a lengthy detour.
