Coming up the Bay, the hull hit a submerged object hard enough to make the whole boat shudder. The yard was closed by the time I got to Calvert Marina, so I walked over at 0730 the next morning. Linda listened to my story, then introduced me to Eric, the manager, who agreed right away that we needed to do a quick haul and check for damage. The boat was up, inspected--just a couple of scratches--prop scraped, zinc changed and back in the water in less than an hour! AND there were coffee and doughnuts while I waited. Great staff, super attitude, reasonable fee. Highly recommended.

I called ahead of my arrival to order new batteries so they would be there. I then lost my autopilot. Of course this yard is very busy and I needed a shaft key to be fabricated in their machine shop. Kenny,Larry and Micky stayed that night till 8:30 to finish my part and get me going the next morning, making a narrow weather window. Not only do they have a great can-do attitude, but are technically talented and professionally head and shoulders above the competition. I recommend Washburns without reservation !!!

As Hurricane Matthew was making its way up the coast it because clear we needed to make plans to either pull the boat or find a Hurricane hole. Our first choice was to be hauled. We talked to the folks and Washburns, who were already booked, and were told they needed to access where they could put us on land, and if they had the stands and blocks necessary, to pull another boat. If they had the stands and space they would pull us, and to check back with them later in the day. When I checked back later that day, you had us on their schedule to be hauled. Luckily, Matthew didn't come up the Chesepeake and the haul out was not needed. 5 Stars for service!

From the moment I arrived the owner came down to greet us and explain what they could do for us and our ailing northern lights gen set. They were a little backed up with work but would work us into the schedule. Jerry, the tech assigned, listened & immediately knew the problem was clogged injectors. They were pulled and had them rebuilt. They also found a leaking exhaust elbow which was replaced. While we were here I took the opportunity to replace the zinc in my engines. Once again I got knowledgeable help from the parts staff (Dave and Kenny). I was very very pleased with Linda and the office staff. They did everything possible to make our stay with them pleasant and enjoyable. I will definitely come back again to have work done.

I had a new autopilot install on my 27 year old trawler. The work required not only plumbing, electrics and carpentry, but also considerable consultation with Garmin about critical electronic component issues which Jerry, the Garmin guru was fully capable to accomplish. The result was a neat and tidy installation with the new AP "crewmember" working as it should. I extend high marks to Erik Skow and his extremely competent, customer service oriented staff.

We asked Washburns to quote a refrigeration install on our Cal 33. From a customer service perspective, they are the tops. The yard manager lost our phone number but remembered where we were staying so he came over and walked the docks until he found us. He kept in touch letting us know he hadn't forgotten about us and was still working on the quote. We had questions about which unit to get and we were able to speak directly with the refrigeration tech. Unfortunately, we were sorely disappointed once we got the quote. He told us he was going to charge us $500 more than what we could buy the unit for from Defender. One would think there was room for markup in their $100 hourly labor rate. We assume that was his way of telling us he didn't want to do the work since he did say they were very busy. At least, that's how we took it. We did not do business with them.

We hauled the boat this past week at Washburn%u2019s. They do good work for a fair price. They were right on with the estimate amount and time allocation for our bi-annual bottom work.

We hauled Monday and splashed Friday the same week. They did the polishing, scraping, sanding and painting. We did prop, shaft and bow thruster maintenance. They allowed us to work on the boat around them and also access the yard after hours. We are live aboards (not allowed to live on the boat in the yard) so we wanted a quick turnaround to minimize hotel expenses.

They were able to plug the boat into shore power while on the hard thus allowing us to keep the refrigerator and freeze running. This was most helpful.

The people at Washburn%u2019s are very friendly and made us feel at home. We would highly recommend them to any vessel owner looking for quality work.

Had my boat pulled for survey. The docks are a bit rough, power was an issue for us, and the houlout was about five hours behind our scheduled appointment. I guess normally this would have been fine, except this was for survey (which they were aware) and we almost missed a sea trial due to timing. The staff was professional and they went above and beyond on the haulout. They ended up discounting the haulout due to the timing issue. Overall I was definitely happy with the service I received.

We had heard (repeatedly) that Washburns was very good, but expensive. We would agree that their work is excellent but take issue that it was notably expensive. We own a trawler with some years and miles under her keel. If we paid a sluightly higher hourly rate, we made it up by saving on the time it took them to track down our issues. These folks truly know these boats and their systems. No one went to school on our dime. The entire staff seemed focused on our satisfaction. The facilities were neat and clean, outstanding for what is clearly a boatyard, not a marina. Everyone we met seemed to genuinely enjoy their work and we enjoyed having them do the work. That's worth alot!

Every person we dealt with at this boatyard was competent and knowledgeable. They all seem to really enjoy working there. I wish we had a crew like this in Southern California. Luke was very accommodating with trying to fit projects into a tight schedule on short notice. All of the office staff were responsive and their billing was honest. Great crew of people and a very rare find in the boating world. Five stars indeed!

We arrived in Solomons last week with two things on our work list: repair a non-flushing Headhunter head and take care of a list of minor gel coat dings we have been accumulating for several years. We came to Washburns because we have a long history here, dating back nearly 15 years, and we knew they coud handle the work.

Cut to the chase: we arrived on Memorial Day, they were on the boat next morning, we devised a work plan, got an estimate for the work to be done, gave them the go-ahead, and work started promptly Tuesday afternoon.

Eric Skow, one of the yard's owners, is the top mechanical guy (a mechanical engineer by education/training) and he was on the job in no time. I'd thought the head would have to come out to replace the defective flushing valve, but he found a way around that and made quick work of it. He had the head flushing in no time, and he later added another part because the old part, which he had to remove, leaked when it was put back in place--not his fault. Altogether a most professional job by Eric, who happens to live aboard his own owerboat right at the yard.

The gel coat repairs also went well. Bruce, Mr. Gel Coat at Washburns, is a laid-back, easygoing character, someone who sailed most of the way around the world years ago in a big wooden sailing yacht that was owned by a friend of mine. We chatted about that and our mutual friend as he methodically tackled the gel coat repairs. He matched our gel coat perfectly and the repairs are invisible to the naked eye. He's a genius.

I tracked hours carefully and when I paid the bill today it came in at LESS than I expected, something that happens rarely in boatyards in my experience.

Bottom line: WBY sepcializes in trawler yachts, though they have many sailboat customers as well. They care about delivering quality work at fair prices, and they're most agreeable to deal with. That's why I've been coming here for nearly 15 years and it's why I'll be back again.

And I MUST compliment Linda, their office manager, who is one of WBY's finest assets. If you've ever had work done at Washburns, Linda will remember you--and give you a great big hug when you come back. My wife and I have been the befeficiaries of many of Linda's greetings and hugs--and they are the real thing. She means it when she says, "Welcome back!" And she has an amazing memory for faces, names, boats, dogs, and everything else important to Washburns' customers. She's one in a million.

If you need work done, Washburns Boat Yard is most worthy of your consideration.

One additional plus: we were alongside their pier while work was ongoing for 7 days, and we were not charged a penny for dockage or electric or water. Try to find that elsewhere!

Great place for your boat to spend 8 weeks on the hard, 2013-12-04

Our trawler spent 8 weeks at Washburns undergoing some serious work including a new Garmin electronics install, stabilizer removal and rebuild, bottom soda blasted/faired/epoxy painted and bottom paint. In addition numerous smaller items were repaired or replaced. Spending this kind of money while you are off the boat and out of the area requires a leap of faith. Because of other reviews on this site we chose Washburns. Could not have made a better decision. Eric and Luke (owners) kept me informed via email and phone the whole time. Their staff, especially Ricky (mechanic) and Jimmy (carpenter) explained everything when we got back to reclaim her. For that matter the entire staff was helpful and went out of their way to accomodate. When we need work again they will be the crew to do it.

Their personnel are well trained professionals who provide great service. We spend summers in Baltimore, MD, winters in South Carolina and prefer Washburns to service our boat. All their employees are very customer orientated.

After getting quotes from several boatyards, we decided to use Washburns to get the bottom paint redone on our catamaran before returning to the Caribbean. We evaluated the alternatives and decided on CopperCoat as our bottom paint, hoping to get 8 to 10 years use out of it. Washburns had not done a CopperCoat paint job, but the service manager, Luke, contacted the company, got a copy of their video, and felt he could do the job properly. From the time we showed up at their dock, their focus on customer service, and the qualifications and skills of their crew were clearly evident. We watched the haul out process, inspected the boat after soda blasting and again after they had fully prepared the surface for the paint. We had some gel coat repair done in several areas, ranging from deep gashes in the bow to minor dents elsewhere. The gel coat repair done by Bruce was so good that, even knowing where he had done it, we could not see any evidence of the damage or repair. They allowed us to do some work that we needed to do and kept us informed of changes to schedule caused by weather or the need to order additional supplies. The entire office staff was friendly and Linda and Kathy welcomed us every time we came in, which was frequently. Dave in parts was very knowledgeable and would take time to answer any questions. Both Luke and Kevin, the crew leader, closely monitored all repairs and the paint preparation, application, and sanding. After the boat was put back in the water, they made sure everything was clean and that we didn't have any issues with any of the work. They let us stay at the dock for several days to make some other repairs and do shopping to restock our supplies.

I contacted Washburns 2 months before we'd be there to make sure they could handle some preventive maintenance projects I needed done - dripless shaft seal 10 year replacement, Naiad stabilizer 4 year exterior seal replacement, and some other basic things. The projects required hauling out which meant staying in a hotel with our dog. As the date approached, they assured us that everything was ready.

The day came, the parts were all ready, they hauled us and performed all of the projects keeping us out of the water for just one night. The work was done exceptionally well. When they put us back in the water, they worked on some other items and did a stellar job. I'm very happy.

But that's not what made the experience fantastic...

Each day, they made sure Dylan (our dog) was busy and cared for. He was given a meet and greet job in the office. He came home totally exhausted each day. It was wonderful. OK, they dressed Dylan in funny hats and posted the pictures on Facebook but I'll ignore that!

I talked at length with each of the 3 mechanics who worked on our boat. Each one had multiple certifications and had extensive classroom time on different systems and products. They are Naiad, Trac, and Wesmar certified for stabilizers. They're certified for just about every diesel engine that exists. The guys are totally experienced and wonderful at answering my continuous questions.

They totally delivered on time, expertise, and quality. I'm sold and wouldn't hesitate to come back for any reason in the future. And Dylan? He'd like to apply for a permanent position.

I'm an annual repeat customer for 9 years now mainly for haul outs, power wash, storage, waxing, etc. I tend to do my own work on bottom painting, rigging and mechanicals and this yard is very friendly to do-it-yourselfers. Very knowledgable and friendly staff and they take very good care of your boat. Linda and Kathy in the front office are about the nicest folks you will ever meet. Very pet friendly place too.

After receiving numerous positive recommendations from fellow boaters, we decided to contract with Washburn's to replace the fuel tanks in our 32 Grand Banks during the past winter. WOW, are we glad we did! The quality of the work is outstanding. Over the course of the project they constantly kept us up to date on the progress of the job. Great communication skills.

And it gets better. The work was done for the exact amount of the estimate. Not one penny more. Folks, this is the first time we have ever had a major project done in a yard for a price that matched the estimate. And the price was very, very fair.

Everyone we met at Washburn's treated us with respect and kindness. For us, this experience has set the standard for the way yards should be operated. 5 stars is not enough.

We arrived a day early and were welcolmed warmly by staff whom helped us dock. The stabilizers were examined and proper care given with new seals. Very happy with the yard and excellent staff. They even had the same people whom place the stabilizers 7 years ago work on them again and remembered the boat!

There's a reason the Washburn's ads in PassageMaker magazine never show the yard, just smiling happy customers in the cockpit of their boats. The creature comfort facilities at Washburn's are non-existent. They do have courtesy car but that's it. This is a working boatyard. Eric, Linda, Kathy and the other staff have been at the boatyard for a long time and all are very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.

Eric and Luke give you accurate estimates of cost and timing and don't mislead you as to either one. Washburn's doesn't have a lot of rules and you can work on your own boat without any hassle. If your boat ends up tied to one of their docks for a few days before or after they work on it they don't charge you for that.

Washburn's does top quality work. They know what they're doing and they keep you informed. But the yard charges for everything they do or use and it is not cheap. But because their work is performed properly the first time they have many loyal customers who come back year after year. I am one of those customers.

I certainly haven't patronized all of them but I doubt there is a better yard on the East Coast.

Did everything they could to accommodate our needs. Very pet friendly - allowed our 2 labs to hang out in the office/lounge area during the day while our boat was on the hard. Office staff terrific. Bottom job, stabilizer servicing, rudder repairs, wash and wax - all done in 4 days. Courtesy car available. West marine, groceries, hardware all nearby. Wal-mart and other big box stores across the river in Lexington Park/California. We will be back.

Five year customer here. Washburn's is my "go-to" yard for any work I'm not comfortable doing myself. Great staff. Don't be scared by the million dollar trawlers in the yard - they treated me like I had a big boat even when we had a 26 footer. When it comes to repairs, you get what you pay for - they stand behind their work.

I've hauled out there for years and they provide great service. Particularly friendly to do-it-yourself crowd (of which I'm one) as long as you follow the EPA rules. The front office is extremely friendly and helpful. The workers are knowledgeable and approachable. This is a working yard with some very talented and friendly folks. I'm not sure why, but Washburn's seems to attract trawlers. In fact, mine is there as I write this. Chris Washburn is always available to give advise and has always treated me fair. They have both a travel lift and rail, so they can pull most anything that comes their way.

The map is a little misleading, Washburn's is immediately adjacent Calvert Marina on Back Creek.
