Reviews for Vineyard Haven Marina
Good spot when wind southwest , 2017-09-20
Captain: , Baltimore (150)

We spent four nights here while touring the islands and visiting friends. You can save your mooring by tying a float to it. They monitor channels 9/10. We reserved via Dockwa. Boats on a mooring do NOT have access to any onshore facilities at the marina! If this matters to you be aware. The anchorage is surprisingly rolly unless the breeze is right out of the southwest. The moorings are well maintained and have heavy duty painters. Launch service is provided by Black Dog wharf who monitors channel 72. They will drop you at the town dinghy dock which is a little out of the way or at the Black Dog Wharf in the center of town. There may be a wait of half an hour or more if they are shuttling passengers to one of the tall ships. You can also get a mooring from the people who run the launch. If you do, the $4/ person one way launch fee is reduced.
We love staying here. Easy access to the town which has good eating options, good car rental options and is less overrun with tourists than some of the other spots.
The Harbormaster occasionally has moorings available inside the breakwater where it is always calm.

Adequate but we will go to Edgartown next time, 2017-08-26
Captain: , Port Aransas, TX (1453)

Stayed 3 nights, 8/20-22/17 on a mooring in the outer harbor (we're a 53' trawler). Lots of boat wakes from ferries and smaller boats winding through the mooring field. Ferries operate from very early to very late. Could only find open wifi and it was painfully slow. Never could find a dinghy dock associated with the marina so we used the one near the ferry landing.

Town has a few nice shops and restaurants, not nearly the zoo of Oak Bluffs but nowhere near as nice as Edgartown. Local grocery is better than expected for such a small town. Island bus stops right at the dinghy dock and was a bargain for sightseeing all over the island; frequent service to multiple destinations. (Best to buy a pass: 1-day $8, 3-day $18, senior 3-day $10.) Most events seemed to be in Edgartown or elsewhere; not much here except a movie theater.

Bottom of the barrel for the Vineyard , 2017-08-20
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (30)

Started with a radio call to the marina. No answer on both channels. Called on land line. Told everyone was. Busy on the dock and to use radio. Once we entered the harbor still no contact via vhf. Called. Secured a mooring. Radioed in. Call intercepted by another Marina. We then went in to a tight mooring. Called the launch. Our return was to be late so we asked the driver about times. After the fifth request we finally were told they would be available till 10. Returned at 9:03. No boat. Just a sign at the dock stating that there would be a ride at 9:30. At 10 the boat arrived. We expressed our dismay. He insisted we were all wrong and we should have read the sign at the end of the dock. We told him we spoke to the driver on the boat and could not have read the sign as we were still on the launch! Again he insisted we were all wrong and the driver could not have given us the wrong information.

At that point we capitulated and just wanted to get back to our boat.

Sorry. Cannot recommend.

Good not great, 2016-09-07
Captain: , Weston, VT (570)

Stayed for 3 nights late August. Only a couple of other boats. Marina has one dock. Arrived and met by some young dock hands who were capable. Everything was clean and neat and worked but the overall feeling was not warm and fuzzy. A course in friendly, customer relations would be helpful. We enjoyed ourselves however.

Mooring Balls managed by VH Marina, 2016-08-22
Captain: , New Bedord (20)

Extremely disappointed with the reservation process for these particular mooring balls. I had reserved a mooring ball months ago and when I got to VH there were none available. I realize that they cannot monitor the mooring field continuously, but their policy is first come first serve on the blue colored mooring balls and do not pick one up that has a orange life jacket attached to it. My reservation was made well in advance of others (4 additional boats showed up at the same time) and my mooring ball should have had an orange life jacket attached to it and should have been in a premiere location in comparison to people arriving that day. I was actually able to grab a mooring ball about an hour later after their employees came out and told other boats to leave but the whole process was very aggravating. Based on my experience, I will never make a reservation for these mooring balls again unless they change their policy to accommodate people who have paid for the privilege to tie up to their mooring balls months in advance.

INGOT at Vineyard Haven Marina, 2016-08-18
Captain: , Palm Beach, Florida (20)

Excellent facility, old friends, great location.

No real services, 2016-08-10
Captain: , Noank, Ct. (20)

This marina has nothing to offer; no showers, water or fuel. The moorings are unusable with wind from the east or north east. Will never stay again.
Bad mooring location and no services . . .

It's all wind direction, 2016-08-02
Captain: , Mystic (11)

Horrible stay due entirely to wind direction. Anything northerly or easterly is a nightmare in the outer harbor. Unfortunately if you make reservations you're stuck paying for unused nights

Nice marina in Vineyard Haven, 2016-08-02
Captain: , Herrington Harbour, MD (230)

We recently stayed here for 3 nights. An all around pleasant experience. Dock hands (Tony, Tim, and Jacob) were all very helpful helping us dock in a very tight spot with great directions and assistance. Equally helpful during our stay taking our trash up without being asked, walking our dog while we were touring the island, etc.

Electric, water and WiFi all worked great. New grill at the beach for us to use, nice table area for enjoying dinner, comfortable lounge.

Rental cars right across the street, very good restaurants and shopping in walking distance, and easy to get from here to other sites on the island.

Other reviews note that Vineyard Haven doesn't have as much going on as Edgartown or Oak Bluffs. But we like the quiet harbor and mournful sound of the ferries coming and going. And it was easy to drive to the other towns and harbors that are more bustling.

A well maintained and operated marina we will visit again.

Moorings Outside Breakwater at Vineyard Haven, 2016-08-01
Captain: , Mystic, CT (20)

Vineyard Haven is a great location. The outer mooring field is great on a nice day. With a stiff east wind you can expect to be pretty uncomfortable.

Wonderful stay on their moorings

Vineyard Haven Review, 2016-07-27
Captain: , Park City (10)

VH was fine but I had changed the reservation and it was acknowledged. We reserved from the 18th on the change. We should be reimbursed for the 2 days cancelled. Who do I contact about this?

Helpful staff and easy to navigate, 2016-07-27
Captain: , Cambridge (20)

The staff was very helpful over the radio, the launch was quick to pick us up from our boat, and I didn't even have to go to the dock office because I booked through Dockwa. Could not have been easier. Had a great time on the Vineyard :)

Dock on the beach!, 2015-09-09
Captain: , Norwalk (303)

A very unusual marina in that the beach drops off so much so that we docked our 76 ft boat only a few feet from the beach. A very low key but very pleasant location. Staff were helpful if not over friendly. Nonetheless everything worked efficiently we really liked the original bar lounge and bahamas like feel to the place. We will be back.

Very nice place, very nice marina, 2014-09-04
Captain: , Bridgeport, CT (62)

We stayed here a couple of weeks ago and loved it! The dockstaff was very pleasant and gave us a hand docking. We really loved the "drink" area upstairs. Made it seem a lot more "local".

Decent Place, 2012-08-04
Captain: , Aventura, Florida (330)

We stayed here for 2 nights at the marina. The internet worked well and the power was good. There is a marine store on property. They have a little lounge that was help yourself pay the jar when we were here. Its a little drive to Edgartown there is not much here. The place has a private beach. The dock hands were helpful getting us docked and had all the answers to our questions.

Not impressed, 2012-01-14
Captain: , Narragansett Bay, RI (446)

Not a very friendly welcome this past summer. No effort to tell us anything about the facilities, such as restrooms, showers, garbage.... Nothing. Do not sit on a mooring outside the breakwater in a northerly. It gets very uncomfortable.

I find it very curious that the only 5 start review is posted by someone from Vineyard Haven, but claims to have stayed at every dock on the island. Really? Could they be affiliated or very friendly with this marina?

I've been on thousands of moorings and this is the first I've ever been to that didn't offer facilities to mooring customers. Pathetic.

Marina is very nice but it is in Vineyardhaven, 2011-12-23
Captain: , Huntington (465)

We had a mix up on our reservation so I would check twice. Dock and marina lounge is very nice and there is a little beach right there. We got packed in pretty good but dock hands were great at helping us. The biggest negative for us is that Vineyardhaven just doesn't offer as much as Oak Bluffs or Edgartown. But if all you are going to do is read a book at the dock it is a great place.

Best Marina On Martha's Vineyard, 2011-08-06
Captain: , vineyard haven (10)

I have stayed at every available dock on martha's vineyard and this one is by far the best. The staff is most friendly and the facility imaculatley kept. as for the moorings i dont know what people expect for $45, you get a safe mooring for the night and get to sleep instead of watching your anchor drag all night. moorings are just that. MOORINGS, if you want facilities you stay on a dock. I would recomend this facility to anyone that likes a clean quiet marina

Do not Stay here on a moorng, 2011-08-05
Captain: , Cleveland, OHio (421)

Very bad experience. First they told us over the phone to email a reservation request. They got our request but instead of hitting reply, the summer help typed our email address in, of coursei it was typed incorredtly and they got a rejection ack. We had asked for an insdie morring, no problem we were told on the phone. When we got here, they put us in an outside mooring and we found out the harbormaster controls the morrings inside the breakwall, not the marina companies.

When we went to shore on the $4/ride tender service, found out the mooring was $45/night.
When we went to the office to check in, we found out that mooring customers were NOT allowed to use 1) the marina toliets, 2) the marina showers,or 3) the captains lounge.

We were told to dinghy over to the town docks and use the town showers. So what did we get for $45? Just an outside morring.

If you have to say here, at least use G&B moorings (Vineyard Tender Serice), at least you will save money as they run the launch service and only charge $2/ride for their mooring clients. However, no use of their facilities also.

The general attitude of the marina people is that unless you are a large boat on a dock paying $4.25/ft, they do not want to provide you any shore services, but do like your mooring fee.

Take great care of you, 2011-05-16
Captain: , Jersey City (506)

Left my boat on a mooring ball for two weeks here in June 2008 while I returned to work. Got a call from the marina saying a big blow was coming up and would I mind if they moved my boat to a more protected ball inside the breakwater.

Nor formal launch service prior to July 4 weekend.
