Reviews for Van Slooten Harbour Marina
Generally good, 2016-08-08
Captain: , North Hero Marina (397)

Stopped there end of July 2016 for fuel, pump out and water, the owner was helpful but was missing a smile, was he having a bad day, I don't know. We stayed there for the night. Showers were clean and docks were in good condition. Except the missing smile, all was good except for the fire horn at 6:00 Am......Port Henry town should get up to date and get their firemen pagers.

Good Stopover 10/15/15, 2015-10-20
Captain: , Fairhaven MA (446)

There was plenty room for us transients on our Champlain Canal/Lake cruise. Ron was most helpful having owned the marina for 20 yrs with his nice wife. Their German Shephard dog accepted dogbuiscuits in their office. Was a bit rolly polly during the night with a NE wind so best to get a slip close to the fuel dock.

Great Welcome, 2015-07-27
Captain: , Montreal (717)

Stopped there for usual services: pump out, water and diesel. Warm welcome, even if we did not call ahead on the radio. The service dock is at the very end as if you wanted to go to use the travel lift.
When ask how to walk to town and where we could anchor, manager offerred us a free dock for a few hours. Much appreciated.
Max supermarket in town, 10 minutes walk, via the shortcut across the backyard, then to the train station dock, then up hill.

Good Diesel Fuel Stop, 2014-09-06
Captain: , N . KINGSTOWN, RI (162)

We stopped here to fill up with diesel. The staff was very accommodating and helpful.

Worst Marina we Visited, 2013-08-17
Captain: , Block Island, NY (50)

Stopped in third week of July for fuel and slip for the night. Very rude manager or owner . We asked if they had diesel and he claimed no. When we stepped off the boat his dog growed and barked at us, he then claimed we startled his dog. We decided then and there not to stay the night and left. Avoid this marina at all cost...

Doesn't look good, 2012-08-14
Captain: , Barrington RI (127)

Full disclosure, we didn't end up staying here. I called to make a reservation a week ahead of time. Plan was to stop here to do laundry, fuel up, and provision as we headed back down the canals. Spoke to manager, told him boat size and was assured he'd have a spot for us. But when we arrived he seemed surprised we were there. He an another fellow wandered down to the dock and were puzzling over various slips as we sat and waited. None of which looked like they would fit our 36ft and 14' beam. Further we and boats on the docks were pitching like crazy from wind and boat wakes. The place looked like a dump from the water and the whole shoreline is lined with motor homes and campers like one big KOA. We radioed back that we would make other arrangements and left. It might have been a great place but we didn't stick around to find out. First time we've ever bailed on a marina before even hitting the dock.

EDIT: I would like to make it clear that the RV's and campers are not on the marina property. They line the shore to either side of the marina. This of course is not the fault of the marina. I would also like to point out the marina owner contacted me via activecaptain regarding my experience which speaks well of them.

Great stop for reprovisioning - Major changes since last year, 2012-06-24
Captain: , Port Henry, NY (41)

A major cleanup and reorganization has been under way at Van Slooten's Harbor Marina this season.
WiFi available
Super clean Showers and Laundry Facilities.
Ethanol-free gas and diesel available at the dock. Ice, water for the tanks and pumpout facilities of course.
Informal Cafe with affable proprietors offering alfresco dining.
Van Slooten's is a great place to stop for reprovisioning. For crew changes the Amtrak Station is a 200 yard walk from the docks. LPG tanks can be topped up at the Citgo station .25 mi south of the marina on SR 9n.
Mac's Market offers fresh produce & meats. They are about the same distance north of the marina on 9n. If you happen to be in the area on a Wednesday be sure to shop Port Henry Farmers' Market. It's held in the parking lot of Boni's Bistro, 4264 Main Street, Port Henry, every Wednesday from 9:00 AM until 1:00PM - just a short walk also.
Welding service available by a retired gentleman whose name escapes me. He was there and repaired my cracked rudder gudgeon within a couple of hours!
New Harbor Master/Mgr Dave (518-546-7400) is doing a great job!

First Stop on Lake Champlain, 2012-06-19
Captain: , Havelock , NC (30)

This was the first Marina to actually answer our phone call. The manager "Dave" made our stay an excellent one. Where do you find a marina where the manager brings you a copy of the restaurant's menu, gives you the weather report and asks you how you slept the night. Something we would expect from a 5-star hotel. The food at the restaurant was excellent and the people who run it are very friendly. The icing on the cake was when the Manager made the effort to see us off and wished us luck, a rare find these days in any other marina. Kelly Garrat

The cafe on the property is "funky", with GREAT food.
Amtkack 1/2 block away, short walk to shopping.
Nice nature walk along the shore.
The harbormaster bends over backwards foir you.

Solid, Friendly, Good People, 2011-01-30
Captain: , Coles Point, VA (777)

Nice wet slips, good food at Dockside Cafe, VERY close to Amtrak station, and a short walk into town and groceries. Very friendly seasonal residents. Gasoline and Diesel. Pumpout. Showers/Rest-rooms and coin-laundry. Not fancy, but unpretentious. Solid, basic services at very competitive rates.
