Additional info:

The entrance to the marina is directly off the Elizabeth River at ICW MM0. There is plenty of water and it's easy to get in.

The entrance is a bit narrow and requires a sharp turn into the fairway. Staff mentioned that with larger boats (60/70 and up) it's easier to come in thru what's marked exit (opposite side of breakwater).

Reviews for Tidewater Yacht Marina
Repairs Provided, 2016-08-22
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (270)

We spent a week here having repairs done on our port engine. The entire staff was very friendly and helpful from initial contact until we left. Reasonable labor rate and billed hours were very honest.

All amenities of the marina were available to us during our stay, though we used few of them. We were not charged for the slip next to the repair facility. As we discovered in South Florida, this is not always true!

Very easy walking distance to Olde Towne Portsmouth. Enjoyed the town even though we were not there under the most pleasant of circumstances. No doubt we would stop here again for repairs or to visit Portsmouth.

Tidewater Marina: The perfect way to start the trip down., 2016-08-04
Captain: , Naples, FL (20)

First class marina and dock staff.
Clean, quiet and everything you could ask for.
I will definitely be back!

Could do better, 2016-07-31
Captain: , Rocketts Landing, VA (10)

Used Dockwa to reserve a slip and noted that we would arrive around 2000 hrs. Inquired about what dock/slip to use if no one was there. No response in the 36 hours since we made reservation. We tried calling office via cell when. Encountered - no answer and the message doesn't tell you what their options hours or who to call after-hours. The phone system keeps letting you pick an area of operation to connect to and leaves you on hold - to the point of running cell phone down.(Turns out the office closed at 6 pm.) Found someone in the upstairs restaurant who just said "park anywhere, I'll be down in a title bit" - she never came down. Called emergency number posted at office. Got a call an hour after we were already secured on our own. Facilities are rough and a lot of non-boat owner foot traffic. Great they have Valvtec fuel, but fueling doesn't start until 0800. At $2/ft, this not competitively priced for the area. We had similar experiences at Ocean Marine (same owner), so we will look forward to the reopening of Norfolk Waterside!

Vey nice marina, 2016-07-27
Captain: , Lenoir City Tn (30)

Nice Marina, nice pool, food at the Marina restaurant was good. Folks were very friendly. We did our laundry there. Location good would stay there again. Electricity, pump out and water. They have a man who drives a golf cart and he took us to town so we could go to another restaurant, do some shopping, tipped him because he did not take money. Would recommend this place a very less rexperience for us.

very nice Marina , 2016-07-21
Captain: , Lighthouse Point, Fl (280)

The crew were great tying us up. Great directions in. John , dock master runs a nice staff. We're going north and he made reservations for us at the next suntex Marina in Yorktown. Got us discounts . Very nice laundry. Restaurant was ok. Very nice food. Had a father daughter country singers. Oh most important !!! If you want your boat to have a great detail in or out ask the dock master for Stacy,s number. Best detail I ever had. Oh I have to mention the young lady that gave us great directions into the Marina

Great Marina except for Bathrooms, 2016-07-21
Captain: , charleston sc (20)

The ladies bathrooms need an upgrade, but more than that they need cleaning. Trash was overflowing, it needed to be swept and mopped, plus the showers were filthy with remnants of toiletries , etc. cluttering them. They have locks with codes but was told they don't lock them. It would seem to me that would be a starting place. There was even underwear and other clothing left on the counter. Ugh! It is not what you would expect from this level of marina.

Excellent Facility, 2016-06-18
Captain: , Fort Worth, TX (50)

Great location with view of Norfolk and Elizabeth River. Pristine with clean facilities, well-stocked store, and helpful staff. We left our boat for the winter and it was well cared for. Maintenance was excellent with constant supervision by John Scott, head of service.
He and his staff show pride and attention to detail in their work. We will definitely return.

Great location, good marina, 2016-06-05
Captain: , Tempe, AZ (210)

We appreciated the friendly, helpful staff. Tessa does a great job helping multiple boaters, all with a big smile. The docks are far enough out in the water to provide cool breezes and no bugs. Loved the pool. Wifi seemed good but they could not keep their Internet connection much. Town of Portsmouth is right there. The String Bean Cafe is worth finding - inside a garden store. Great salads and sandwiches, very reasonable prices.

Strong Management, 2016-05-21
Captain: , Brooklin, ME (361)

You can tell that management is on the ball, here. The docks and facilities are in good shape, and the staff are cheerful and helpful. The basin is well protected from wind and wakes.

One stop shopping! (update 5/16), 2016-05-19
Captain: , Longboat Key, FL (944)

This marina has it all. Fuel, protected floating docks, a well stocked ship's store, excellent WiFi, clean bathrooms, a very friendly and helpful staff, and a terrific onsite restaurant and bar called CRAVE.

We ended up staying here two days due to weather on the Bay, so we took advantage of visiting Naval Museum in Portsmouth. A samll but VERY well done display worth your time.

Update 5/16 - Just want to reaffirm the quality and professionalism of this marina. Fuel, food, ships store, interesting thnigs to do, and very competent friendly people.

Tidewater Yacht Marina, 2016-05-07
Captain: , Sandwich (692)

Great location for exploring Portsmouth and a quick ferry ride over to Norfolk. Floating docks are protected from ICW traffic. Bath/shower facilities are clean but shower area reminds me of a high school locker room. No privacy. Staff friendly/helpful. Courtesy golf cart service available to Food Lion. Nice overnight.

Great marina, 2016-04-16
Captain: , Chesapeake Beach, MD 20732 (190)

Great marina but more costly than some near by but very protected. We called early but they close up at 5 pm at lest in April but dock hand stayed until we arrived at 5:15.

Great Place, 2015-11-09
Captain: , Satellite Beach, Fl (60)

Stayed there from 10/9 to 10/13. It was a surprise on how much we enjoyed the area and Tidewater is the place to stay. Everyone was super nice, helpful and professional. Look forward to hopefully returning one day in the future.

Tessa was a gem, 2015-11-07
Captain: , Severna Park MD USA (280)

Stopped in at 8:00 AM and did not call ahead. Our mistake. Tied up at the wrong pump and walked to the marine store. Purchased ice and asked about diesel and the gentleman put my ice in a dock cart. Tessa rang me up and told us to bring boat to the store location for the fuel. We emptied our trash and we asked about water. Tessa helped us with our lines and hooked us up to water, diesel and more ice. Excellent service and very efficient.

Excellent, 2015-11-03
Captain: , Colonial Beach, VA (110)

Came in on Sunday night with some engine problems. Staff was very helpfull. E-mailed Rick, Maintenance Service Supervisor, the evening at the recommendation of Tessa (who was very helpful during our stay). Rick and mechanic came on Monday morning and fixed the problems.

Good Experience, 2015-10-31
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (420)

Although not a fan of very large marinas, this one was better than most. Good dock hands, docks in good shape. $0.75 ferry ride to Norfolk for seniors. Don't miss the Commodore Theater!

Lock Your Outboards and Boat Up, 2015-10-28
Captain: , st petersburg , fl (51)

Kept the boat here for a month. Overall, was a well maintained marina. Willy, the dockhand was friendly and helpful. Bathrooms were clean. The town had some nice restaurants, with a cool old movie theater called The Commodore. One star comes from no security at all to keep the general public out, and my girlfriend waking in the middle of the night to a couple trying to steal our outboard. She and the dog scared them off. Come to find out, another boat has just had there's stolen as well, and one of the employess told her "it wasnt the first time". When i returned to town, i asked the "gentleman" in charge what plans were being made regarding security, and that other marina's have security that i have stayed at. The reply was an angry "which marinas"? I replied ones in FL. At this point, the guy literaly scoffed at me and walked off. Not the type of concern I would expect after having someone trespass our boat and try to steal something. Thus our departure from this facility. Will not be back.

10/23-24/2015 Great stop, 2015-10-27
Captain: , Solomons, MD (1290)

We love this stop. Nice city market on Saturdays...great bread some nice produce. The Commodore theater is a must. We saw Bridge of Spies. Very current. Nice shopping. The kitchen shop is fun, always find something to pick up, judt up from the theater on the right side. Plenty of areas to walk. Out near the Navy Hospital is a nice walk at Swimming Point Walk along the water. Will be back again.

Safe docking for 3 weeks, July-Aug 2015, 2015-10-27
Captain: , Croton-on-Hudson, NY (10)

We love this place. We needed a marina in which to leave our 30-foot sailing catamaran (18-ft beam) for 3 weeks while we traveleled elsewhere. They placed us in two adjoining slips where we had plenty of space to secure the boat and leave her without worry. They didn't charge us extra for taking up 2 slips, perhaps because it was the slow season. If you stay for more than 5 or 6 nights, it's cheaper to rent for a month. Protection is good all around. The docks are floating, so no worries about tide range while tied up. They even have a floating swimming pool, most welcome in the hot summer. We spent a few days as liveaboards also, and found the marina to be a great location for visiting Norfolk (via the convenient ferry) and Portsmouth. Marina staff were helpful and friendly.

Good place to stop, 2015-10-18
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (1134)

Good docks and water. Check your electric power. Mine was 132 volts. Helpful staff at slip to help with lines. Restaurant was a disappointment. Pleasant convenient place to spend a night. Dog friendly with huge lawn area at head of the dock.

not worth it, 2015-09-20
Captain: , Baltimore, MD (20)

we stayed for two nights in Lou of an open concert across the channel when we arrived, however wish we had just anchored and saved the funds. The restaurant was over priced as well and not worth it. the store was helpful and clean, showers were sub par at best. customer service was ok.... the dock master was cool but just not involved much. didn't seem like the staff was paid enough maybe. the docks are nice, pool was great too. when we did go across for the concert we had trouble finding a dinghy access without climbing up ladders though. not bad but IMO just way to corporate feeling.

great location, protection, 2015-08-06
Captain: , Bayfield, WI and the ICW (1259)

This is a great place to hide from bad weather. Small swimming pool, ship's store, decent restaurant, fuel, shuttle to downtown. Cheap and convenient ferry to Norfolk. Wifi and TV reception are subpar, however, but they are working on it. Close to Commodore Theater, featuring first run movies and decent food at the same time.

Many things good, but a few not (and inexcusable), 2015-08-05
Captain: , St. Petersburg, FL (201)

Stayed here two nights and although this marina has all the services you would expect, the men's shower was inexcusably filthy. Mildew on the shower curtain and it looked like the showed itself had not been cleaned in months. Floating docks are nice as is the pool. Restauarnt on site is OK (but a bit over-priced, as one would expect). I'd give this marina 4 stars, but a filthy shower is really inexcusable - evidence of someone not paying attention (or caring).

Great place, and staff thank you Tessa, 2015-07-05
Captain: , Lac Champlain (105)

John is an excellent dockmaster, very welcoming, he is a gentleman. We talk with him, very friendly.

The nice Tessa kiosk marina is really friendly and dedicated to customers. Congratulations.

We were TrideWater marina for a stay of 2 days (July 3 & 4), they took us there quickly, very nice waterfront, helpful staff, clean toilets and shower.

The day of July 4, there was a very good band. There is possibility to take a taxi tourism.

What more? thank you all.

Diane and Richard, Rodignard

Very disappointed...., 2015-07-05
Captain: , Oriental, NC (190)

We stayed at Tidewater from July 3 %u2013 5 and were very disappointed. Customer service across the entire marina was marginal at best. No one appeared to be enjoying their jobs. I know it was a holiday weekend, but I am not sure that the one bathhouse that we had access to was cleaned while we were there. The only privacy in the showers was a shower curtain that separated you from the lawn chair they had in there for you to put your stuff on. Wi-Fi was down more than it was up. When we reported it, we were told that there had been a problem with it for a while. However, no one bothered to mention that when we checked in and asked for the Wi-Fi password. The docks were well-maintained, the store was well-stocked, and the pool was nice, but considering what Tidewater charges, that didn%u2019t make up for the other shortcomings. It was a great location for the fireworks but if we%u2019re back in the area over another Fourth of July, we will anchor out or stay at the free docks before staying at Tidewater again.

Good Stay - Good Experience, 2015-06-02
Captain: , Daytona (410)

May 22, 2015

Nice stop convenient to both Portsmouth and Norfolk. Marina staff knowledgable and pleasant. Very convenient "in-slip" fuel & pump out. Nice restaurant & bar on site as well as a pool.

Portsmouth "Old Town" has a lot of potential to be a great walking and shopping district, but there are many storefront vacancies. Additionally, Norfolk Waterfront is completely empty, maybe undergoing renovations. Given we were there over Memorial Day, most restaurants/bars were closed on Monday, taking us a bit by surprised.

Not the area to stop in if you are looking for things to do within walking distance, but there are a million things to do by car nearby if you have access to one.

Definitely would stay again, but only for a day or two while transienting the area.

Nice friendly staff, 2015-05-20
Captain: , Venice (589)

We stayed here several days to see the area and do an oil change. Staff were very helpful and let me dispose of the old oil in their work facility. Good facilities and close to Portsmouth and ferry across the river.

Great place with great staff, 2015-05-17
Captain: , Boytnon Beach FL (170)

Pulled in here on the way to New York... Excellent location and great staff, they will fuel with diesel at most docks... High speed diesel pumps up to 100 gallons per minute with a great marine store and reasonable prices!

Beyond The Call of Duty, 2014-11-18
Captain: , Macatawa Michigan (1074)

We pulled into Tidewater during the November Arctic freeze having lost the use of our anchor windlass after anchoring in Fishing Bay. We arrived with just a few days before we had to head down the ICW to avoid a 3 day closure of the Great Bridge Lock. The service crew removed our windlass, disassembled, got new parts, reassembled, tested, reinstalled it and had us on our way in a couple days. We were grateful and thankful as we were trying to get to Charleston to leave the boat to go home for Thanksgiving. We also took on a substantial load of ValvTech diesel at a good price, and it was clear Tidewater pumped a lot of diesel(no fuel sitting in tanks here). We will make Tidewater our stop from now on during the spring and fall trips north and south. Thanks guys!!!

Nice stop before ICW, 2014-11-17
Captain: , Kingston, NY (190)

The anchorage just outside at Hospital Point got choppy, so we docked here to wait out the winds. A bit tight coming into the docks with not much room to manuever. found things to be on average.

Amazing service, 2014-11-02
Captain: , Amelia Island, FL (20)

My boat was towed to Tidewater yacht marina on a Friday afternoon with a strong gale approaching. Ralph, the service manager and his "A" team had the repairs completed within a couple hours of arriving. They were friendly, helpful, and informative. I felt fortunate to have landed there.

Awesome all around, 2014-10-21
Captain: , Nederland, CO (410)

I don't have much experience with marine repair places, but Tidewater's service dept. far exceeded my expectations - professional, but friendly, very knowledgable, and really interested in helping you. Seriously reasonable rates, too. If you need diesel repair, Rick is the man. The restaurant is good, and it's a short walk into town.

Excellent stop with mechanics available, 2014-10-19
Captain: , Essex (140)

Excellent docking and fueling facilities. Close to Old Portsmouth and only a 15 minute ferry ride to Norfolk.
We were delayed in leaving Sunday due to a mechanical issue, but the service manager had a mechanic on board at 7:30 Monday morning. Parts were orderedd that day and the issue resolved by 10am Tuesday. This is a great stop if you have similar issues as the marina has a staff of technicans and a travel lift if required.
Rates were $2/ft and refueling can be done at your slip.
Will definitely return.
New management and they are definitely trying to improve the facilities. One area they could look at are the bathroom facilities, which wihile adequate were somewhat old, not that clean and less than private when it comes to showers...kind of like high school gym faclities.

Nice Place, 2014-10-02
Captain: , Frog Mortar Creek, MD (180)

Stayed three days. This is a nice/scenic/convenient marina with on-site restaurant and accomodating staff. Walking distance to historic area, golf cart service to acquire provisions. Only negative -- marina could benefit from more pump out locations.,

Nice Marina: Good Location, 2014-09-25
Captain: , Hampton, VA (314)

This is a nice marina with floating docks, clean restrooms/showers, swimming pool, and good restaurant on site. It provides a convenient location for touring Portsmouth. Norfolk is a fun ferry ride away.

Upgrades are a hit, 2014-09-19
Captain: , Beaufort, NC (280)

This marina is recently upgraded. The marina is located behind a bulkhead which provides protection from the wakes in the commercial harbor. Also note, this marina is huge. Pay attention to the directions for your slip as it is easy to get confused. The folks aiding your arrival are very experienced and will ensure you safe arrival. The marina has a food and supply store which is well stocked for a marina. The shower facilities are a little above average. Portsmouth has gone to considerable effort to improve the downtown area just outside the marina. There are many stores and restaurants within walking distance. Also, there is a passenger ferry which has frequent runs to Norfolk where there is excellent shopping within a short walking distance. Security at the marina is very much in evidence.

Very Convenient, 2014-09-15
Captain: , Marco Island, FL (476)

Phoned 5 hours prior to arrival but the female clerk must have failed to "put us in the system", but no consequence other than a little more time needed for registration.
Easy entry and slip. Paid $2.00/ft.
Showers need updating.
Staff was friendly. Town of Portsmouth was a bit "sketchy".
Found some good food and service at the nearby Rennaissance Hotel.

The benchmark!, 2014-09-12
Captain: , Cuba Landing Marina, Waverly, TN, Nashville, TN (184)

Everything about this place is top notch. And if you are there on Friday join fellow boaters in the restaurant bar from about 4:30 to 6:30. ( I had a built up list of repair/maintenance items plus a couple of unexpected that the service department took great care of, I'm talking about with attention to every detail like you wouldn't believe..... This is the place we all dream about.)

Second Visit Excellent, 2014-07-13
Captain: , Occoquan, VA (370)

Our 2nd visit in span of 3 years was as good as the first. New management did an excellent job and willing to get you anything you need delivered to your boat. Fueling was easy as they can fill any boat right at the slip. However, luckily we confirmed our slip reservations weeks ahead of arrival because during change in ownership, all reservations were lost and not transferred over. New golf cart service into town was an excellent addition, and live bands on-site at the bar during weekends was also nice. We travelled as a group of 4 boats and they were able to keep us all together due to the marina's size on "F" dock, which appears to be mostly for transients. We'll certainly be back if running through the Portsmouth area or via the ICW.

Great place to stay, 2014-07-09
Captain: , Prince William Marina, Woodbridge (100)

We had 4 boats stay for a couple nights.....we all had a great time. They have a floating pool on the docks, so it's a nice place to cool off while staying there. Staff was great, and Diesel was around 3.86 per not a bad place to fill up.

Nice marina - great location, 2014-07-08
Captain: , Occoquan, VA (352)

Stayed two nights here. The marina staff is great and the services there are spot on. The location is perfect to explore Portsmouth and Norfolk. Slips are very sheltered and ours was floating (as was the unique pool).

Tidewater Yacht Marina, 2014-07-05
Captain: , Heathsville, VA (50)

Good convenient stop close to Hampton Roads with excellent support staff. We have spent two different nights here and had good experiences on both occasions. Floating docks. Excellent condition. Restaurant onsite was good, but floors were dirty.

Good stop but over priced, 2014-06-19
Captain: , Englewood, Fl (351)

We stayed here May 24, 25, & 26, 2014. Excellent facilities and staff. A little over priced with no discount for Boat US, MTOA, or AGLCA. Might consider going to the marina in Norfolk should we pass this way again.

Good stop before the Chesapeake!, 2014-05-08
Captain: , Punta Gorda, Fl (880)

Very large and clean marina with nice floating cement docks. Very friendly staff and nice ship store that was being improved. Fuel and pump out at the is convenient. Ferry stops here to take you to Norfolk venues. There is a courtesy golf cart that takes guests to Old Towne, which is also walking distance. Restaurant on sight overlooks the water and is very good. We will return to this marina.

Above and beyond service department, 2014-05-05
Captain: , Annapolis (160)

I banged up a set of props heading north this year. Called Tidewater Yacht and found out they have new owners, new service department and all new people. I arrived late Saturday and they hauled me on a Sunday morning at 08:00!. I met 4 of the service people who were all professionals. Service was outstanding and the prices very reasonable.

Great place, 2013-10-24
Captain: , New Hamburg, NY (140)

Everything is updated. This is a definity home run. Fuel up right at your dock slip. Easy access, pleanty of water, clean facilities, professional staff.

Great stop, 2013-10-23
Captain: , Lewes, DE (165)

Easy stop before any bridges if your heading south. Matt and the staff were wonderful. Called in advance for an after midnite dock. Matt let us take the fuel dock for easy in without staff. Nice ships store, a bit of everything and complimentary coffee. But you really HAVE to go upstairs and have breakfast at the Crave. I hear all the other meals are good too ;) This is my only stop from now on in Virginia.

Great stop before getting through bridges, locks and weekend traffic., 2013-10-22
Captain: , Michigan (583)

Our first time staying here was 10-16-13. Very convenient fuel-in-slip. Staff excellent and helpful. Didn't leave facility so won't comment on the shopping etc. The baths were clean and accessible although no privacy what so ever. With a few small petitions in the shower area, I would have given five starts.

Everything you need!, 2013-10-21
Captain: , Cape Porpoise, Maine (240)

Tidewater Yacht Marina is a totally professional operation, with excellent people, clean docks and all services at your slip. The restaurant (Crave) is okay for a drink and a snack, but nothing special.

Good stop over heading south, 2013-10-16
Captain: , Pasadena,Maryland (510)

Pleasant stopover heading south. No grocery store nearby. Fueling was in-slip-very convenient. Resturant on-site was not much. Had cable TV. Bulkhead offers good protection in heavy winds.

Good stop over, 2013-09-27
Captain: , Wantagh NY (581)

Stayed here a few times, good location, clean diesel and a floating pool which is nice and refreshing. Highly recommend

Really enjoyed the stay, 2013-09-05
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (270)

Great modern marina kept in great shape. Staff bent over backwards to assist in every way possible. They have fuel pumps on every dock and can refuel you in your slip. Call in advance and some students from ODU will come pump you out as well. We stayed Labor Day weekend and they had lots of availability. Fuel prices were better than home as well.

Great place to visit, 2013-08-17
Captain: , Sanford, Fl. (887)

We stopped here originally planning to stay for 1 month but dental issues caused us to stay for 2 months. But other than the dentist we had a really great time. The marina is kept in tip top condition, has nice wide docks and long finger piers. Fairways are wide and even with all the heavy boat traffic virtually no wake in the marina. The marina is very professionally managed and the on-site owners stay on top of everything. It is about 1.5 miles to the grocery store and several choices for dining are about a 5-6 block walk. Best place for ice cream is Noel's on High St.

Tidewater Yacht Marina, 2013-07-26
Captain: , Oriental, NC (220)

The dock layout is a little maze-like, but there is a well labeled picture in the cruising guide, and they put out folks to "direct traffic." The floating docks are in good repair. The shower facilities are clean and in pretty good shape. The people seem knowledgeable, and are very nice, courteous and helpful. They have fuel and a pumpout, things not available across the river at the Waterside Marina.

Good Staging for South/North Bound, 2013-06-26
Captain: , Annapolis, Maryland (110)

Stopped here with 6 boat flotilla doing Carolina Loop. In-slip pumpout and fuel right at transient docks. Convenient to town and provisioning. Very helpful staff. Did not try restaurant but good local comments.

Excellent staff, 2013-06-13
Captain: , Freeport, Maine (175)

Nice place to stop while heading north. Nice to getting back to floating docks and love the fact that diesel fuel lines can be dragged to your boat while at it's slip. Portsmouth has many attractions including a railroad museum (important to some of us). I will hold to four stars because I felt the dock layout was a bit cramped for sailboats. Piers seemed to be spaced for twin engined power boats. Very tight for me.

Easy Stop Entering or Exiting ICW, 2013-04-24

Very convenient to the ICW with floating docks and easy fuel access. Helpful and friendly staff.

An easy walk to several good restaurants in Portsmouth

Super Staff at great marina, 2013-01-17
Captain: , San Antonio,TX (25)

We have stayed at TYM off and on since 2007 during all seasons...The same friendly competent staff is still the same as 2007..UNO MAS has been docked on the floating docks during Hurricanes, tropical storms and noreaster's with no damage and still plenty of piling left after 5 -7 water rise. It is one of the safest storm protection marinas on the east coast..

Good stopover on way south, 2012-12-21
Captain: , Bristol, RI (431)

We stayed here from Nov 5-10, 2012, waiting for better weather. Nice place, with everything except a courtesy car. Need a taxi or bike to get to grocery. No problems with bathrooms, showers or laundry facilities. Restaurant closed the day before we got there. Historic Portsmouth within walking distance and wel worth the walk. Norfolk a ferry ride away with attractions within walking distance of the ferry dock. Enjoyed our visit in the area. If there was a courtesy car would have gotten 5 stars.

Nice marina with friendly staff, 2012-11-28
Captain: , Bear, DE (197)

MTOA had their northern rendezvous here in Sept 2012 and we, along with several others, decided to stay for a month. The staff is very friendly and could hardly pass the boat unless they petted our puppy. A Post Office is nearby and we found this entire area a great place for dog walking. We had no issues with the grassy area across from the marina. Restaurants nearby were great and we enjoyed the naval musems on both sides of the waterway. Fuel is turned over here every 3-4 days, so you can count on fresh fuel. We had fun!

Hurricane Sandy, 2012-11-05
Captain: , holland, mi (132)

We needed to leave the boat for awhile in Oct. Monthly rate at $14/ft but good quality docks. Glad we had a floater. Came back just in time for Sandy. Water came up high but no problems. Electric is on same grid as Navy Hospital. Only out for 1/2 hr. Large marina with same mentality.

These people love you if you have money but not if you are in trouble with few funds., 2012-10-11
Captain: , Miami Beach (630)

We were towed into this marina last night because the Marina of choice Ocean Marina was full and we couldn't speak with anyone there so we were towed to Tidewater Marine instead as they were able to verify availability.

I understand that beggars aren't supposed to choose anything and just have to accept what is happening to them, I believed that since our experience with BoatUS/BoatTowUs had been so wonderful and the reviews about Tidewater Marina were also 4 star+, and that they were not the 'impersonal corporate' mentality that can be found in big marinas, I was expecting more.

I did not get it. What I got was 'according to script'. I was in their marina less than 12 hours under duress with no alternatives and what I got was, that will be the full rate and $5.00 for electric.

I understand their business model but just so you know, don't go there with slender funds and a situation that has you over a sling. I am sure that the slender funds paid the most important role in this scenario. Because if I didn't have slender funds, it wouldn't have been an issue for me. But needless to say, I will not be going back and if you are a greater good kind of person, neither should you. The old Love thy Neighbor as Thyself is sorely lacking at this place.

Great Stop, 2012-10-11
Captain: , Port St Luice. FL (420)

We stayed here for a month including attending the MTOA rendezvous in mid September. Very friendly and informative staff. Whenever we wanted to go someplace or go to eat somewhere they gave us excellant information. Overall very professional. We will be back again. Thanks Gordon.

Anchored south of Hospital Point but Tidewater for Fuel & Pumpout, 2012-10-09
Captain: , Oriental (270)

We had delightful anchorages going north and returning south in the basin just north of Tidewater Marina. We went in to Tidewater for fuel and pumpout services and had a delightful experience. The gentleman, whose name I cannot recall but seems to run the place/certainly takes care of the fuel and pumpout facilities, was incredibly helpful and full of info about bridge openings and places to see and go to in Portsmouth and Norfolk. Though we did not stay a night, we used the restroom and therefore saw the bathing faciities. They were older but very clean and well kept.

They do a good job, 2012-10-06
Captain: , Kent Narrows, MD (200)

The MTOA Rendezvous was well handled by Tidewater. The slips are fixed, but the finger piers are long enough to put my 36 foot trawler in forward with a dink on the back, and still get off easily. We were also able to refuel at our transient slip. The heads and showers are clean and the staff friendly. Being close to town and with a shuttle to Waterside is also a real plus. Shopping is about a mile and a half away and many of us made the pleasant walk through the historic district.

The little Czars of Summer Palace Approve, 2012-08-28
Captain: , Arnold, Md (50)

Stayed for 3 nights week 8/21-24. Very helpful and freindly staff. Great docks, in slip fueling! Baths could use a little upgrade (new shower heads). Very convienient to everything, recommened the childrens museum, big hit with the kids. Different restaurant, that was disapointing, but good stay over all. Will be back next year.

Great Stop, Great People, 2012-08-11
Captain: , Palm Beach, FL (133)

We stopped here on 8/10/2012. This is an excellent place to stay, better than staying in Norfolk.
The marina is very clean, floating docks, and very good staff. We took on diesel at the slip, and the staff was very helpful. They give a discount for over 200 gallons, for paying cash, and they even gave us a form to fill out to avoid paying the 5% tax.

There is a resturant at the marina that is good and not very pricey.

The town of Portsmith is very close by and is a nice place to walk. There are a number of little pubs, good resturants, and even a movie theater.

All in all a great place.

Great stopover, 2012-06-30
Captain: , Richardson, TX (552)

We have stayed at Tidewater twice and will again. Excellent marina, clean facilities, floating docks, good fuel prices and the staff has been very helpful both times. We called the marina at the last minute after hearing a tornado warning for the Portsmouth area June 1st. We didn't like the first 2 slips they wanted to put us and they were very accommodating and found us a spot on a T-head and had us tied up and secure minutes before the weather hit. Portsmouth is a very pretty town although we haven't had time to really explore it. This marina is much easier to access than the Norfolk marina and we will continue to stop here.

great Marina, 2012-06-26
Captain: , North Fort Myers, FL. (268)

First class Marina with a great restaurant [ what a view ] and ships store. [ great T-shirts ] If you are heading down the Eliz. River it is a great overnight stop. Also a floating pool.

Great wind protection, 2012-06-13
Captain: , Grand Haven (470)

We had winds out of the N.E. at 20 mph and were very comfortable with our four point tie. Oysters at the on site resturant were excellent. Showers and pool are very clean. They do need to pick up their trash more often the trash cans were full.

Convenient, Professional, Clean, 2012-06-12
Captain: , santa barbara (696)

Have stayed at Tidewater several times, always a pleasure. Most recent arrival during stormy weather, dock staff made process easy. Fuel and water on dock, ships store has most basic supplies, restaurant above had good food and great place to meet and talk with other cruisers. Fuel was best price in area.

Great People, 2012-05-08
Captain: , Saint Michaels (300)

We have stayed here and have gotten fuel here. For those who are going North and have to wait for the bridge to open at 6:30, these folks will wait for you.

Top notch stop, 2012-03-16
Captain: , NY, NY (104)

Very nice knowledgable people. Easy in off the ICW. Clean showers. Onsite swimming pool. Great bar and restaurant onsite. Ships Store probably has what you'll need.

Warm Welcome, 2011-11-27
Captain: , Boston (10)

We pulled into Tidewater Yacht Marina after a 2 day run outside from Boston and what a welcome surprise. The marina has a great location just of the ICW and they met us at the slip to assist us with tying up. After getting settled we decided to head up to The Deck Restaurant (onsite) for our first meal besides sadwiches in several days. We started out with homemade hushpuppies which we woderful and I ordered the 30 oz. Porter house house stake while my shipmates tried everything from seafood to pasta. We were all very happy with the service from Kim and the Porterhouse and sweet potato fries was cooked to perfection. After dinner the owner came by our table to ask how our meal was and spent over an hour with us answering questions about the waterway and the local area. He too had traveled the ICW to florida in past years. We also had the delight of meeting his children who came up from the boat to say goodnight. This entire facility was a joy to experience in comparison to the many corporate impersonal facilities along our trip. The personal touch and the friendliness will make this a repeat stop for years to come. I would recommend this stop to all travelers for a very hospitable stay and a great meal.

Ok to visit, pricey to stay, 2011-11-18
Captain: , Daytona Beach, Florida (119)

Nice marina conveniently located. Watch fuel price quote. Stated price, then after 200 gals added tax. Restaurant food was good but pricey with small portions. Stayed next door at the free dock.

stayed on 10/22/11, 2011-11-05
Captain: , Bear, DE (255)

Upscaled marina with everything you need. Fuel at your slip. Large ship's store. Restaurant on the docks but going into Portsmouth gives a better selection. Many places convenient to walk to and you can ferry across the river to tour Norfolk.

Many local attractions, 2011-10-26
Captain: , Rock Hall, Maryland (119)

Marina is great and location is ideal for local attractions. Portsmouth is a great walking city. A visit to the Bier Garden restaurant is recommended, great German food and 250 beers (about 3 blocks from marina). The visitors center next to marina is very helpful. The ferry to Norfolk is inexpensive ($1.00 for seniors). The coffee shop (one block back from marina) has WiFi. rent a car for visit to Colonial Williamsburg and water park.

Fabulously located safe secure marina, 2011-10-11
Captain: , PooleUK (933)

I had cause to visit here whilst en route from DC to NC, the staff were very helpfull, on the dock as we arrived to take lines, good stable shore power, good WIFI and clean water.
This marina is very sheltered and allows great access from which to explore the area. Pricey, but worth it.

Great Stop!, 2011-10-06
Captain: , Mattituck, NY. (371)

Stop here every year.Best fuel prices around. If you do NOT live in VA. you DO NOT have to pay fuel taxes. Just fill out the forms in the office and they will keep it on record, every time you come to Tidewater they will make sure you do not pay fuel taxes. This is true for all fuel stops in VA.
Pleasant people, willing to help, clean bathrooms. Lots to see, many restaurants, ferry to go across the river.

Lots to see and do, 2011-09-07
Captain: , Dataw Island, SC (290)

Stayed here 5 days - there is much to see and do around Norfolk that it makes for a nice stop for several days. Marina is located literally on the edge of downtown. Staff very helpful. There is always a lot of boat traffic in the area for interesting views. Highly recommend the Nauticus exhibit where we spent 1 day. Your spouse will enjoy the McArthur Mall.

Tidewater Yacht Marina, 2011-05-21
Captain: , Bay City, MI (609)

Nice Marina, but not dog friendly. Only spot for dogs is a large vacant lot that appears to be owned by others and ready for development. Lot is littered with dog excrement. Watch your step. Since there is no organized dog "spot", a problem exists. Staff is friendly and cooperative. Laundry needs sprucing up. Wouldn't take much as rest of facilities are nice.

Friendly, convenient, 2011-05-17
Captain: , Miami, fl (3544)

May 2011: been stopping a few more time, last on 5/13 Again great friendly service and best fuel price. Staff stayed late to refuel us. Great band playing at The Deck, good food, reasonable prices

stopped there in oct 08 with a 70 footer. friendly staff, professional, clean docks, cheap fuel, plenty of water under the props and conveniently located. can't ask for more

The Deck Restaurant, 2011-04-27

Very nice restaurant with good atmosphere. Excellent views of marina, ICW and Norfolk Waterside from their second floor location.

Friendly and Good Facilities, 2011-02-26
Captain: , Portsmouth, NH, USA (347)

Had to leave the boat for a week and fly out.
Worked out great. Also, easy access to Norfolk with the ferry and beautiful old residential town next to the marina.

Very well protected marina, 2011-01-31
Captain: , Jacksonville, FL (822)

Very well run marina, tight maneuvering inside marina.

Dirty Tepid Showers, 2011-01-03
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (70)

The showers and the floor outside the shower were dirty. The water was not hot. The docks were broad with plenty of room. The dock master spent most of his day with folks on a large yacht, so several people were waiting on him. The woman in the store was very apologetic.

Captain: , Hollywood, MD (142)

It's in the right place and it is nice. Good bar/restaurant right on the dock. Cable/Wifi and floating docks with slips wide enough for a Cat. The price is a little high but it is a great place to stop heading south.

Second visit as good as the first, 2010-10-30
Captain: , charleston (761)

This was our second visit to Tidewater and it remains a favorite. Friendly, clean, helpful, convenient to ferry to Norfolk. Good restaurants within walking distance of marina. Portsmouth is an interesting town to explore.

Nice folks/Nice marina, 2010-07-09
Captain: , Jupiter, FL (1236)

With a really good restaurant. Good community of boaters either heading into, or coming back from, crusing the Chesapeake.

Pleasant stop, 2010-06-25
Captain: , Red Wing, MN (384)

Had help getting in to the slip. Pool, store with some basic supplies, nice view over Elizabeth river. Nearby paddlewheel ferry to Norfolk Waterside area and High street in Portsmouth at $1.50 per person and you can bring your bike on the ferry at no extra charge so you can get around the down town area of Norfolk . Able to do self guided walking tour of Portsmouth historic district and the visitor center is real close to marina. Nice location

Great Location, 2010-04-14
Captain: , Williamsburg, VA (42)

Tidewater is a great location. Friendly staff. Well provisioned store. Clean restrooms. Easy walking to many fine restaurants in Old Town. Inexpensive ferry to the Norfolk side of the river for restaurants, shopping and baseball games in the summer at Harbor Park.

Very nice marina, 2010-03-26
Captain: , Port Ontario, Lake Ontario (410)

I had my boat there longer but I only stayed several weeks. Everything is very nice. My only complaints is the WIFI has an extremely low signal and would disconnect me frequently. It is a very marginal system and if you have a vehicle they have limited parking spaces. I would stay again if the opportunity comes up.

Very Nice, 2009-05-26
Captain: , Chicago, IL (13)

Staff isgreat and the location is perfect.

Great location, 2009-05-19
Captain: , Stafford, VA (1063)

This is an excellent stop when transiting the ICW or just visiting Norfolk or Portsmouth. A ferry is nearby to cross to Norfolk, where you can visit Nauticus & the USS Wisconsin or do some shopping. Nice floating docks for transients with in-slip diesel fueling.

Falls short, 2008-05-27
Captain: , Orlando (3)

Mediocre restaurant, way too expensive WiFi, staff very helpful. This is a standard stop for ICW travelers as it is a near perfect location. Too bad it does not live up to its potential.

Great Folks, 2007-10-31
Captain: , Charleston, SC (2)

Very friendly and helpful folks. Go out of their way to relay messages and do what they can to help. A great place to stop.

ICW travelers must, 2007-09-11
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL Cape Cod, MA (513)

Most ICW travelers stop here. Lots of good advice available at the on-site restaurant. Full service marina.

Tedewater Yacht Marina, 2007-02-03
Captain: , Patterson, La (1441)

Typical full service marina. A hotel is adjacent and town center( downtown) is within easy walking. Many restaurants, museums and the like are at hand as is the historic dist. An easy dingy ride across the river to Hampton Roads is a good bonus as is a good anchorage immediately off the marina bulkhead.
