Reviews for Thunderbolt Marine
This is how a transient marina should be, 2016-05-15
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (671)

We have stayed at this marina five times over the last several years, most recently in March and again in late April of this year, 2016. The docks are easy to access, with very capable help in docking. Everything is very clean and well cared for. There are no dusty, gravel parking areas to walk over, and track debris back to your boat. The restroom/shower/ laundry areas are the best we have seen, and are perfectly clean, private and very roomy. There are good restaurants within about a ten minute walk. We cannot imagine staying anywhere else in this area. It is superb.

We were there on 2-29-16 Super clean, easy docking on face dock, great staff, free dougnuts for breakfast delivered to your boat. Can handle any marine problem.

Totally Exceeded our Expectations, 2015-12-03
Captain: , Colonial Beach, VA (110)

Thunderbolt Marine, located outside Savannah, GA, totally exceeded all of our expectations. I have never been treated so well at a marina and repair yard. Arrived the week before Thanksgiving needing to replace a salon window and fix a fresh water leak of unknown source. I contacted Josh, the Dockmaster at the marina, a few days before arrival who put me in touch with Kevin Caleca, Project Manager for the yard. We developed a plan over the phone to take care of these two items. Upon arrival, Howell, the Marina Manager, received us. Being that the following week was Thanksgiving, we knew that we were going to have to stay for more than a week and were concerned as this was a peak transient period. Howell reassured us that they would work with us on our stay. He was true to his word. Within the first three days, we had our window replaced by Robert, their window subcontractor. Although I had coordinated with the daughter of one of our crew members who lived in Savannah, to take care of our cat, Ginger, while we were celebrating the holidays with our daughters in New Orleans, Kevin checked on the cat as well while he made his daily checks of the boat. The cat did not lose weight while we were gone. You cannot beat that type of customer care. Right after Thanksgiving week, we were moved into the maintenance basin, among mega-yachts. Kevin quickly had two technicians assigned, Justin and Jesse, who were able to diagnose the problem and solve the water leakage at least expense. I cannot thank enough the staff of the marina and the yard for a fantastic experience and pleasant stay.

Great facility, 2015-10-25
Captain: , Newport (400)

Very clean laundry, bathrooms and showers. Very nice staff and best of all, free Krispy Kreme doughnuts every morning!!! The only disadvantage is wake from rude boaters on the ICW.

Easy in, easy out, and great facilities., 2015-08-05
Captain: , Austin, Texas (140)

Stayed one night, helpful staff, excellent showers. Not much else here, but it was enough.

Friendly staff, 2015-07-26
Captain: , Bruxelles-Belgium (91)

after bad reception in Bahia blue, we found here a good place with all facilities... and a warm welcome 0,50$ less per foot !

Good Stop on the ICW, 2015-07-25
Captain: , North Charleston, SC (622)

We stopped in May, 2015, expecting to fill our tanks for the trip south and spend just one night. The next morning as we were checki8ng the bilge we realized that we had a failed transmission oil cooler. It was Saturday and no shops or parts supplier were open.

To make a long story short, we were able to locate a replacement part in New York on Monday and have it shipped overnight so we were on our way late Tuesday morning.

The marina is in great shape, the staff is friendly and professional and there's a loaner vehicle on weekdays. There's a laundry room and nice restrooms and showers.

Tubby's Tank House is a "don't miss" stop on the ICW but not someplace you want to eat every day. There's not much else withing walking distance except for a marine parts store that has a decent, but not extensive inventory.

Great stop, easy on/off ICW, 2015-05-02
Captain: , Dutch Harbor, RI (411)

We stopped here heading south and on our way north. Great place to get repairs done. Clean shower and laundry facilities. Extremely friendly staff. Enterprise car rental nearby for getting a car and visiting Savannah.

Easy in & out, 2015-05-01
Captain: , Erie, Pa. (1796)

Stayed here night of 4-27-15. Marina was full and they put us in the yard. Nice 10' wide concrete floating docks and good power. Water depth was good as they take 200 footers or greater n this yard. Still got the donuts. Been here many times and always very convenient.

Very Nice Stop, 2015-01-08
Captain: , Traverse City, Mi (281)

Spent two days here to let a recent cold front pass by and to take in Savannah. Very nice facility. Clean, individual showers, good laundry, helpful, friendly staff, just a quick cab ride into Savannah. AND - a box of Krispy Kreme donuts placed on your boat each morning - a very nice touch!

Excellent transient facility, 2015-01-02
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (636)

Docking and departing help excellent, good laundry and bathing faciliity. This is a working yard and destination for large yachts who sail up the Wilmington River. We passed on the Krispy Kreams. Were there for the new year. If you stop, have to dine at Tubby's Tank in 'downtown' Thunderbolt. Also while some have complained about the Bi Lo grocers, about 1/2 mile beyond is a Whole Food, Target, Home Depot.

Captain: , Colonial Beach, VA (590)

Stopped for the first time at Thunderbolt. First rate facilities. Easy stop right on ICW. Complementary donuts on board in the morrning a nice touch. Wifi was strong. Staff professional. 4 stars because dock hand more worried about closing (4:30 arrival with 5:00 pm closing) than helping us tie up. Slight negative.

great staff, loved the donuts, 2014-11-24
Captain: , South Portland, Maine (847)

need a key for facility but do not need a key for clean bathrooms. Laundry great and the facility is extreamly well managed, secure and clean. A bit of a hike for Thai food, but was worth the effort. There are several other restaurants much closer but the need for something different inspired us. Strange that there are no sidewalks on the main street, so use a side street when walking to from Victoria Drive.

There was only one dock person so radio contact was spotty when he was engaged on the dock, but he was right there to assist with landing, which was a bit dicy due to current.

Nice spot, clean and friendly, 2014-11-05
Captain: , Buzzards Bay, MA (296)

This is a very nice marina. The facilitieas are clean and in good shape. There is a security gate on the parking lot so no folks just wandering through. There are two restaurants a short walk up the river, Tubbys and Tortuga's. I highly recommend Tortuga's, their crabcakes and black and blue sirloins are awesome.
Of note, in early December they host the local Christmas boat parade and a lot of the boats stay the night at the marina so if you're planning on a weekend in December make sure to call ahead.

Kruspy Kremes delivered, 2014-07-06
Captain: , San Diego (300)

Nice touch waking up to find some fresh donuts delivered to your boat! Right off the ICW so that is nice. Floating docks at 1.75 a foot not your typical marina in that there aernt a lot of slips. Mostly docks to tie up to. Looks like a large shipyard repair facility is the bread and butter here!

Right on ICW, 2014-06-01
Captain: , Punta Gorda, Fl (880)

Average marina that is comfortable. Nice showers/bath and largeiclaundry. Walking distance to 2 restaurants. Nice staff.

The usual for this marina, 2014-04-20
Captain: , Lewis Creek, Md (1214)

From other reviews, nice bathrooms, nice dock, and friendly service. t is an easy stop on the ICW! Would have done five stars except 2.0 miles to groceries and resteraunts ok not exceptional.

Out of town but good, 2013-11-27
Captain: , cushing, maine (482)

We spent two days here, after deciding that the City dock was too exposed and rough for our liking. This marina is very well maintained and is right on the waterway. No courtesy car, but most other things are there, including a boix of warm donuts delivered to your boat each morning. Fuel and pump-out available.

Excellent Stay, 2013-11-06
Captain: , Yorktown, VA (952)

Excellent as mentioned in all reviews. Helpful, clean, friendly, great location, and, of course, the donuts were a nice treat.
The staff and other reviews have some mixed comments about the bus service. We figured it out at least for now. One of the routes has been discontinued which caused some of the confusion.
Walk out of the gate; go straight on Falligant Ave to Savannah State University. The bus stop is at the front gate.
Take #12 to Abercorn/Anderson. Get a transfer to the #14. Take to end of line at bus station on MLK Blvd. The Visitor%u2019s Center is a block away.
We enjoyed lunch at 17 Hundred 90 on President Street. We did a trolley tour on Old Savannah Tours because Trip Advisor rated them highly. We were disappointed. The guides were all good but just couldn%u2019t see anything. I would recommend a carriage or walk tour.

Great Marina, 2013-10-03
Captain: , Lizella GA (1414)

It was easy to tie up even with the strong current in this well maintained marina. It is a gated marina so the boats are safe here. Close to some great resturants.

One of the best Marinas, 2013-06-10
Captain: , Halifax Marina Daytona Beach (300)

well maintained, quiet, 5 mi from Savannah, dog friendly, gated, clean, friendly staff

Super Service, 2013-05-22
Captain: , Stuart Fl (300)

This was our first visit to Thunderbolt Marina. We arrived at 4PM to get fuel, pumpout and stay for the night. The current was running about 4 knots and would not let us get on thedock with a portside tie which we needed to do a pumpout. Josh Conner stood by while we tried several approachesand finally settled for astarboard side tie. We fueled up the starboard side tank and while that was happening we were discussing options. Josh suggested that we could spin the boat around with lines. We proceeded to do this against the current with Josh and Jake (our crew) on the dock handling lines, Al on theflybridge handling engines and Sue on the deck handling lines. It worked. Josh was super with his service not willing to give upon what we needed. He stayed well past quitting time to get us settled in. We will come back here if we are forced onto the ICW again because of weather.

Great Place for repairs, 2012-09-21
Captain: , St. John, VI (90)

Competent, professional, pleasant-not descriptions usually associated with the marine service industry...or as one of my fellow cruisers calls it "the marine non-service industry".
So imagine our delight when we had our boat hauled out at Thunderbolt Marine & were treated to service of such high caliber, we're happy to refer readers to this yard!
Our project manager Kevin Caleca attended to every detail so that repairs were handled efficiently & within budget! WOW!
We totally recommend this yard-we even received a 15% summer discount on labor! Can't beat that deal!

Great location, very secure and terrific staff, 2012-09-01
Captain: , Wilmington, DE (780)

we left our boat here for almost 5 weeks and were very happy with the service and attention we got from Hal the dockmaster and Garner his assistant. Very well maintained and clean facilities, excellent bathrooms, excellent floating docks. Easy to rent a car from here and do the Savannah tourist thing. Highly recommended.

Nice Marina, 2012-07-22
Captain: , Key Largo (5304)

Good staff, only wife at laundry, nice laundry and showers, taxi ride to town $15 each way, Budget (and they pick you up also) $28. No brainer. Driving around town was great, magnificent oaks, large estate homes, like a movie set.

Friendly, Service minded Marina, 2012-07-06
Captain: , Little River, SC (1967)

We wound up staying here for over a week to get some repairs done after tropical storm Debbie showed us that every window in the aft stateroom leaked. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Showers are very clean and well maintained. The service staff was top notch and responded in a very timely fashion. Fresh donuts and a newspaper every morning was very nice. Goodb restaurants close by and River Supply Marine store has lots of supplies at very good prices.

Great stopping off spot, 2012-07-02
Captain: , St. Thomas, USVI (624)

The current here can be strong so docking can be challenging, but the staff was great and we were able to take advantage of their wonderful and complimentary Krispi Kreme donut and newspaper delivery each morning. Very clean facility and close to Savannah.

Good Yard But It Needs to Pay Attention to the Details, 2012-05-10
Captain: , Beverly Hills, Michigan (20)

We had about $9,000 worth of service on our boat done by the yard at the end of April. As a result of this experience, I believe there are issues that the yard needs to address. It charged $1.50/ft/night for our 50 ft boat to sit on the hard for the bottom painting etc. My wife and I left the boat for an entire week while the work was being done. We did not require or use the "services" that are listed on the quote sheet to justify this charge. Although I asked that it be deleted I was told it is a standard charge applied to every boat. This resu8lted in a $675 charge for the nine days. The yard also started out quoting an additional $30/day for one 50 amp power cord. (The marina charges only $10/day). When I again explained that we weren't even going to be on the boat and asked for a reduction, the charge was reduced to $10/day.

When we returned to the boat the day it was re-launched there were some small but troubling issues. We had asked that an apparent problem with one of the shower sumps be looked at. Although no problem was found, the worker had left the carpet pulled up and the bilge light on but with the hatch cover in place. Later I noticed strange grey spots on the transom of the boat that I couln't rub off with just water. I had no idea what this was. I called the General Manager, Ernie D'Alto (who is a knowledgeable and helpful person) and he came down to the boat himself with a bucket of soap etc and a brush and cleaned the transom and other areas. He explained that this residue often accumulated on boats in the yard and was a combination of a black/grey yard dust getting absorbed in the morning dew and drying on the boat. In other words this was a well known issue.

Finally, when we left the next morning we noticed a very nasty grinding noise coming from the running gear as we increased speed in the ICW outside the marina. We turned around, the boat was hauled back out and it was discovered that the spur cutters (which we had asked to have cleaned and sharpened) had been reinstalled incorrectly without the necessary gap between the spurs and the bearing hub. It took two minutes to reposiition the spurs and we were re-launched and on our way.
The bottom paint and other work done on the windlass and our air compressor was performed in a workmanlike and satisfactory manner--but at very typical boat yard prices.l

In short, I came away with the uncomfortable feeling that no one came along on this project to check the work that was done and insure that things were installed, reassembled and cleaned up correctly. There was no adequate "oversight." That, combined with what I felt were unwarranted charges for having the boat sit in their yard while they worked on it, left me with an uncomfortable feeling as a customer.

On the positive side, the marina and yard are clean, and the people are friendly and courteous. We have stayed at the marina before (with no boat service being done) and have been very satisfied.

Stopover on way north, 2012-05-09
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (639)

We spent one night here and got fuel. Fuel and pumpout were handy and efficient - right at the side-tie dock. Dock staff was excellent. They gave us a ride to the local restaurant which we would recommend highly. Of course the Krispy Creams and the newspaper delivered to your boat in the AM are mthe highlight of this excellent stopover.

Great stop very helpful, 2012-04-22
Captain: , Palm Coast, FL (10)

Good CLEAN restrooms and facilities. Helpful dock hands awkward current but great stay overall

great fuel stop, 2012-03-28
Captain: , wickford, R.I. (212)

diesel @ $4.10, courteous staff, easy access to floating dock

Cheap fuel, 2012-03-07
Captain: , N Fort Myers, Florida (516)

We bought fuel here for $4.01/gallon for diesel.

Third time stopping, 2012-01-04
Captain: , Reedville, VA (688)

Left boat for electrical repairs and went home for the holidays. Work was done as requested and at price as good or better than FL. They really try to provide the best service at the best price. Great bath and laundry facilities. Best place to eat, Tortugas, one block past Tubby's. Great menu and a Sunday Brunch to die for.

Better in warm weather, 2011-12-16
Captain: , N. Myrtle Beach (343)

After prime season everyone goes home at 5 PM. Help at the dock came from other boaters who as always are ready to lend a hand. Limited staff on hand are great folks with great attitudes.

Bad wakes are here, 2011-12-07
Captain: , Flagler Beach, Florida 32136 (305)

6/27/11. Nice floating docks and good fueling. Radio would not answer, but dock hand was kinda ok. I guess??????. Really great resturant walking distance away. Nice baths and gezbo to relax in. Tide is swift and wakes are many. Only wind protection is from the west. Not a real bad marina, but one can do better in that area real easy.

Good place to stay for a day in Savannah, 2011-11-30
Captain: , Algonac, MI (1659)

Call 912-233-5767 for the latest bus schedule into town as it changes frequently. Marina was in good shape, but many wakes. Staff very helpful. Interesting to tie up with some mega-yachts.

Excellent Marina, 2011-11-28
Captain: , Richardson, TX (552)

Easy in and out, great docks, friendly personnel and the bathrooms are awesome! Private and very clean. Nicely landscaped, nice seating areas. The donuts are a bonus! We rode the city bus in to Savannah. Definitely reccommend if you're not a snob. $3.00 round trip. One thing, the schedule times & bus numbers change on Sundays. We rode the #12, changed to #14 and were downtown in no time. The drivers were very helpful about telling us where to get off! The only minus is no store close but we didn't need anything anyway. Had a great meal at Tubby's, a short walk. Great place, we'll be back.

I was tired and this place was there, 2011-11-16
Captain: , sassafras river, md (303)

Arrived after two days of anchoring and running hard, Need fuel, shower, and a big Drink. Fuel up was super easy, they then moved me to the end of the fuel dock so I could stay the night. Dock hand was pleasant and friendly, The second thing after getting elect, was getting a large bag of ice, Bloody Mary's yea!

Poor service again!, 2011-11-15
Captain: , Belhaven, NC (363)

It's true, this a great spot with nice floating docks and good facilities. It would be even better if the dock hand responded to a hail on VHF ch16. This is the second time my wife and I docked our boat by ourselves, walked up to the office, banged on the window to get a lame excuse. Not the only facility in Thunderbolt. We'll try one of the others next time!

Update: this morning when I mentioned the radio problem to Hal, the dock master, he promised to have a serious talk and then he comped our dockage!

The best near Savannah!, 2011-11-07
Captain: , Huron Ohio (547)

Hal and Anthony do a fantastic job making you feel welcome and attending to any needs you have. The warm Krispy Kremes and the newspaper are a bonus. We have stayed at least four times and plan to stay again in the future. A $10 cab ride takes you to Uncle Bubba's Oyster House, brother of Paula Dean, which uses all her recipes and you don't have to wait to get a table. The char-grilled oysters, shrimp and grits and key lime pie are out of this world.

great little place, 2011-08-07
Captain: , Palmetto Fl (545)

Stayed 2 nights at Thunderbolt to see Savannah in August. Great facilities , all updated. Friendly, helpful staff. Complimentary newspaper and Krispy Kremes delivered to the boat every morning. 5 block walk to bus stop for #24 bus to Savannah. $1.50 bus fee, 20 minute ride to downtown Savannah. Walked to Tubby's for free Friday hot appetizers and cheap beers. Good gas prices.

Excellent Marine Repair Facility, 2011-07-05
Captain: , Halifax, NS (400)

We had some saildrive issues and needed a place that could haul a 22 foot beam catamaran. Kevin was very professional and friendly. The local Yanmar reps were excellent as well.

Execellent service at competitive pricing, 2010-05-10
Captain: , Palm Coast (792)

Have stopped here for service many times. Although most boats in the yard are 3 to 5 times my size (52 ft.) the service has always been first class. They also have a sense of urgency - get it fixed and get you on your way! I'm always amazed that when the workers are finished, the Service Manager personally vists to insure all work was done properly and leaves his business card in case you have questions later.
