Reviews for The Pelican Marina
Needs a lot of work, 2017-07-02
Captain: , Little River SC (586)

This place needs extensive repairs. Rates and wifi is excellent, but exposure to high winds and the docks and extended stay you may find damage to your boat.

Rustic with Promise, 2016-09-19
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (986)

New owners appear to have great plans for Pelican. Years of neglect shows but stable 50amp power, clean rest rooms, super WIFI, and flat rate of $35 a night make it an attractive destination. No protection makes docking a challenge with East winds and driven water floods exit from dock. Recommend they participate in the Albemarle Loop Cruise program!!

Cpt Larry S/V Saphira, 2016-08-07
Captain: , Knoxville (70)

Under new owner, plans for many upgrades including adding fuel pumps. Already evidence of pilings being replaced and new pedestals. Lynn was kind enough to stay late to help us with lines. but it was tough getting on and off the boat, bow in.

new owners, a lot of improvements , 2016-07-28
Captain: , Bridgeport, CT (210)

We ended an affordable marina to do some cosmetic work on our sailboat and leave her for two weeks for a land vacation. We arrived mid June and by July 1st, there were new owners. In the past month, numerous cosmetic improvements have occurred and new piling so are going to be installed starting in August.
Nicely air conditioned bathrooms and laundry area, marina store is well stocked, and wifi reaches all slips.
The new owners have some great plans for the next few years and are very accepting of ideas from the liveaboards that call the marina home. There will be some growing pains for the new owners but I hope all transients give this marina a chance, water and electric is available unlike the city free docks. It is a short walk into town for dinner for the Rose Buddy ceremony.
We will be back this fall after sailing the Chesapeake Bay for a few months

Good stop with power, 2016-04-06
Captain: , Stafford, VA (1077)

If you want power overnight, this is your best bet at Elizabeth City as the free dockage in town is not for you. The docks are a bit rustic but everything is serviceable. The staff is friendly and helpful and the marine store is pretty good. It's a short walk or bike ride across the bridge to town. It can be a bit rough though in a SE wind.

Good people, Marina showing some wear, 2016-01-14
Captain: , Colorado (411)

Stopped for the night on our late and cold trip south. Had a face dock that could accomodate our catamaran. Rate is very good. Docks could use a little work with some broken pilings and worn out rubber pads (held on with metal strips) on the pilings. Added extra fenders to fend off the metal. Staff was very friendly and helped us tie up and gave us info on the town. Bath house was clean. Limited power options available at some slips. Well stocked store. Would have given a higher rating except for the worn condition of the docks.

Place to rest, 2015-10-09
Captain: , Racine, WI (525)

Rate is very good. So the docks are old, so what. The folks here were right there to help with lines and any questions we had about the area. It was easy to get in and out. Walking across the bridge to eat was no problem. Actually a little exercise after eating is a good thing.

Great Marina, 2015-09-14
Captain: , Elizabeth City, NC (60)

Very friendly atmosphere, excellent pricing, easy access in and out and beer is priced most excellent.
Restrooms are very clean, laundry is available, the WiFi works great and has a good signal and items in the marine store are very competitively priced. The only reason I didn't give the marina 5 stars, even though I have a slip there, is because of no fuel and there are a broken pylons on some of the slips that need to be replaced. I would recommend the Pelican to anyone looking a place to dock for the night or longer.

We were pleased!, 2015-07-01
Captain: , Oriental, NC (190)

We were heading to the Mariner's Wharf (free slips) in Elizabeth City but saw this on Active Captain and at $35/night thought it was worth checking out. Docks could be in better shape and the fixed finger piers are narrow and close together making getting on and off the boat a little tricky. Bathrooms are VERY clean and air conditioned. Wi-fi is free but is slow. We used our wi-fi antennae to boost the speed. We did not use them but laundry facilities appear adequate. There was no problem with the 30 amp service. It was a nice place to stay for the night. We would stay there again.

very hospitable, 2015-06-02
Captain: , Washington, NC (40)

Docmaster responded to call with very helpful info. We were looking for quiet berth in strong S wind after rockin and Rollin cross the sound. He could accmdate at Pelican but recommended free dock at Jennettes Food Service dock just passed the bridge. Excellent directions, even called back to let us know that we could make the next bridge opening if we sped up. 5 stars.

Pump out - out of service, 2015-05-14
Captain: , Grand Haven MI (20)

Heads up, as of May 14, 2015 the pump out is broken. Asked when it would be fixed and were told "not anytime soon." Be sure to call and check or plan ahead.

Best for the very nimble, 2015-05-13
Captain: , Hallowell, Maine (240)

Manger Mike is very nice and was there to meet us, but he is also the only one running the store so wasn't able to stick around long. The docks and pilings are pretty rough and we wern't able to get close enough to the short finger pier to get off the boat. The power post was between it and our our bow sprite, so we ended up having to climb over the bow and leap. The wind was fetching up - which looks like it would for all the docks south of the bridge, so we had a rocky night and a tricky away the next morning, without staff help.

good place and good people, 2014-11-11
Captain: , Annapolis (451)

When the city docks looked full and the wind was howling, this place can be a life saver. Very helpful and Very capable, talented staff. Was able to help
With installation of overnighted parts. Will count this as an ace in the hole.

Friendly and Good wi fi, 2014-11-10
Captain: , Milford, Ct (138)

The place is a bit run down but everyone is very friendly and beer was on special for $1 - The docks are pretty ratty and the pump out wasn't working

Rustic, comfortable, good for the price-point, 2014-11-01
Captain: , Pasadena, MD (1496)

Wooden fixed docks are well past their prime. Power at the slips is adequate. The store is well stocked at good, but not "discount," pricing. Manager is Mike, lives aboard onsite on a Morgan 50 Out Island ketch. He's very helpful, well respected by the marina community, and very knowledgeable. He no longer recommends the Water 's Edge restaurant adjacent to the property. Transients can dinghy into town or walk about 10 minutes. Wi-Fi configuration is unusual in that onboard routers are not supported, but individual computers can get Internet w/o a problem. Rest rooms with showers are clean.

Carolina Loop, 2014-09-29
Captain: , Newport News, VA (153)

Late Sept 2014 trip. Came down the Dismal Swamp Canal and caught the last lock opening. Couldn't get to the Marina by closing time. However, folks were there to meet us.
Docks are a bit rough but adequate and safe. Rest rooms are clean.
Not extravagent but good alternative to free docks at Elizabbeth City docks. Flat rate $35 per night and $15 for pump out per 30 gals. Easy walk or bike ride into town.
Reasurant next to the marina was closed for vacation when we were there so no review.

Shows promise, 2014-09-16
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (185)

Mike, the owner/manager is very helpful. Docks are in need of some repair, and the power is a little antiquated without even one 30amp pedestal per slip. Lack of fuel anywhere nearby requires some planning.

A friendly Marina with a can do Manager, 2014-06-07
Captain: , annapolis (453)

Mike the Mgr. is a one man band. He is in the office 12 noon to
6pm daily.

The marina has good internet service, nice A/C laundry and showers. Upon check in Mike provides you with the WIFI password and a handout containing over 50 phone number of local services ranging from Car rentals, taxi, restaurants, pizza delivery, the Bridge, emergency numbers, and marine services.

The Water's Edge Grill, across the parking lot, is a nice waterfront restaurant, with very reasonable prices.

Agree with some of the comments regarding the docks. They are a little old, but remember it is ONLY $35 PER NIGHT.
Manager Mike and Pelican Marina offer the transient a very good value. My 4 star rating results from the combination of friendly/helpful Mgr Mike, the very low rate and the condition of the docks.
condition and the rate.

Splinterville , 2014-05-22
Captain: , Stuart, Florida (599)

If you need to stop (I needed water), I guess any port would do. Staff of one provided help with lines but really jagged, splintered pilings, electrical connections I'm sure would pass code in some third world country, etc.
You will need lines all way around.

Basic Facilities, Ok if you need power, etc., 2014-05-16
Captain: , Little River, SC (476)

Very helpful staff to get docked, but that's about it. Date of stay was 5/2/14, just after not so good weather, still windy, but got docked with help from manager without incident. Ok stop before entering the swamp.

No frills and priced right, 2014-02-26
Captain: , Edmonton (279)

Although the docks and facilities are a little run-down, they are clean and serviceable. Exposed to on-shore winds, so have enough dock-lines to tie off to the pilings on both sides. On-site marine store is well-stocked and competitively priced. Short walk across the bridge to town, but other than banks and the Albemarle Museum, there's not much in that part of town. Stores and restaurants are a couple miles down the road. Staff and the liveaboards were very friendly and helpful. Makes a good, economical place to wait for a weather window to cross the Albermarle.

Basic no-frills, but good marina, 2013-11-17
Captain: , Ottawa (1173)

This is a basic no-frills marina. Solid docks, a very affordable rate, and clean bathrooms and showers. Has laundry machines on site as well. Can't go wrong at this price.

Great for the money., 2013-10-06
Captain: , Houston, Texas (970)

The town docks may be free, but can you get off of your boat? Very nice showers, good wifi, power, and help docking. The price is more than reasonable and it's an easy walk to town.

Good Marina, 2013-09-08
Captain: , Mackeys NC (123)

We had stayed here once before and were very satisfied, so decided to stay again. Again we were very satisfied. You can stay here for $35 with power and water.Very friendly and heldful. Nice air conditioned bath rooms and laundry. Well stocked ship store with resonable prices. Al lthough we didn't eat there there is a nice restaurtant next door that we we were told was very good. We instead had pizza delivery. If you need grocieries a local market will come pick you up and bring you back. We definately recomend this Marina.

Great price, docks rough, 2013-07-26
Captain: , N. Myrtle Beach (343)

Helpful people and great flat rate of $35/night including power and water. Pump out is on the the northern tee dock. Went to great efforts to get power adapter in next day. Good marine hardware store. Pilings are rough and docks need repair.

Adequate marina - good price, 2013-05-31
Captain: , North Carolina (344)

This seems to be more of a live-aboard marina. Dock attendant was available to help us tie up. Price is excellent at only $35 for dockage and electricity. Just a short walk over the bridge to town.

Great Service, 2013-05-01
Captain: , Lighthouse Point, FL (227)

The wind was howling when we approached the free town docks and our 45 foot power boat was not going to fit. The boat on the bulkhead was banging and with our high sides it would have been hard for the two of us to dock there. So, we went to Pelican Marina and Mike was just great in helping us to dock and even jumped on the boat to help with looping the outer piling. No, it is not fancy, but they had what we needed plus electric, water and a pretty substantial marine store and for $35 all in, a good deal. The walk to town is maybe 10 minutes. We saw the Jeannette docks on the other side of the bridge and their bulkhead looked much better than the towns, but then we read the review of the noise at the bridge and decided we are happy where we are. The Albamarle Museum is a must see attraction. Good lunch at Groupers

Great Price Great Service : ), 2012-11-26
Captain: , Miami Beach (630)

Got there on 11/1/12 after fueling up at Lambs. Since we had gotten a later start, it was a late arrival. Mike and Josh took excellent care of us. Josh even went to the trouble of driving me to the ABC store before it closed which was very thoughtful and helpful. We stayed 2 nights so we could get some laundry done and take a nice hot shower. $35 included electric. Laundry didn't need quarters as you pay in the store. It was $1 per load so that was a great price too! They have the only pump out in EC and even though it is $15, the man who helped us got us going before 8:00 AM even though they don't officially open until Noon. I would go back in a heart beat.

Okay but a distance from town, 2012-11-06
Captain: , Roseville MN (398)

Elizabeth City was great, but a long walk across the bridge. The Rose Buddies do an excellent job of introducing the town. Friendliest town and people ever - we were offered (and accepted) rides from local person to grocery, back to boat, even taken out to a restaurant for dinner. This marina is minimal, and VERY exposed to SE winds (which we did not have). Town docks would have been better, certainly for location.

Good news/Bad news, 2012-07-29
Captain: , Charleston, SC (422)

The "marina" doesn't open till Noon so be prepared to do your own selection of slip and docking. Finger piers are somewhat short so keep that in mind. Staff are easy to work with and very pleasant....short walk over the bridge to the free museum and welcome center (closed on weekends). Price is right...$35 including electric. The free docks across from the marina are in a great location but finger pier is only about 4 feet in water/electric

Nice but, PICK YOUR DAY !, 2012-07-07
Captain: , Key Largo (5457)

You are exposed to southernly winds, but marina is a bargin, slips can be difficult, but dockmaster knows his stuff.
Exellent WiFi at my dock.

What a dump!!!, 2012-07-07
Captain: , Las Vegas (322)

But they have water and electric which is better than the City Docks. It was 95 degrees with thunderstorms so we opted for the air conditioning. Helpful staff and at $35 we were happy. Short walk across the bridge for good restaurants.

Super helpful dockmaster, 2012-06-12
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (7374)

We needed to leave our boat for a week, Josh very helpful in getting us tied up. Finger piers vary in length, try to get next to the end of the "T" or the T-Head itself. Clean showers, small laundry, but priced right. Fully stocked marine store. No shops or restaurants on the causeway, but many a short bike ride across the bridge. New bridge under construction may cause traffic problems. Marina very quiet during the week, but very lively on the weekend when the locals show up.

Friendly marina, 2012-04-29
Captain: , N Fort Myers, Florida (516)

This marina is old and dated, but in good repair. It has restrooms, showers, a pumpout, and a very friendly and helpful owner, Josh Owens. Not so good in a southwest wind, but generally OK. He charges a flat$35 per night, including electric and water. town is a bit of a walk, or $8 cab ride, with the usual restaurants, banks, and stores. Super friendly residents.

It is what it is, 2012-04-26
Captain: , Cincinnati (1810)

The staff, Josh. is very good. The docks are old and need upgradeing but are safe and solid. The price is right and the facilities are dependable. Not a place for long term stay. Too much exposer from the southeast and south. We would stay again mainly because of Josh.

Emergency stop, 2011-12-31
Captain: , Harveys Lake, PA (100)

Had to head back east for a family medical problem. Mike opened the store for me to take care of anything needed on his day off. Very accomodating and when I departed, Mike again reassured me all will be well and get going. Josh called a few days later just to check if I needed anything and again, to reassure me all was well. Great customer service. What more can you ask for?

Just sit on the porch, 2011-11-16
Captain: , Half Moon, N.Y. (120)

Spent a couple of days with Josh and the boaters waiting for the Elizabeth City bridge to get fixed. Could have spent the rest of the winter and been content with the hospitality.

Consistantly Friendly, 2011-10-18
Captain: , Kings Creek Marina (766)

One of the really great things about cruising around is the consistency of friendly service we get time and time again at marinas we have found along the way. An example of this consistently friendly service is the staff at the Pelican Marina, in Elizabeth City.
The manager, Josh, came in after hours on a day off, to catch our lines and make us feel welcome.
Bring a little bag of dry cat food with you. There are a half dozen snapping turtles that will come up to the dock at the marina office, and beg for food. Talk about a marina that%u2019s turtle friendly %u2013 and not just the MTOA turtles.
This is another spot we will frequent, both North and South bound.

No Frills, Good Marina, 2011-10-05
Captain: , Lavallette, NJ (251)

If the free dock at town does not work for you because you need power (or some degree of privacy), Pelican Marina provides power, water, WiFi, laundry and clean showers. No frills and a little worn on the edges, this is a functional stop in E City and bargain at fixed rate of $35. Avoid in strong (15 knt) southerly breeze.

Will stay again when back in Elizabeth City, 2011-08-06
Captain: , Slidell, LA (20)

Finger piers are short, tried to fit me into one that wouldn't work with my long bowsprit. But were very accomidating in just letting me take the T-head instead, basically told me tie up where ever I wanted to! Nice clean showers and heads, only one per gender, but not crowded when we were there. Much quiter than the other side of the river! Friendly, helpful staff.

Pelican Marina, 2011-06-27
Captain: , Smith Mountain Lake (496)

I launched a 22' sailboat for a 4 day gunkhole adventure from this marina in August of 2010. It is a nice place with a clean bath house and a small chandlery. I replaced my old flares while I was there. They have ice and a laundry as well. People were friendly and helpful. Add a lounge and it would 5 stars.

Nice stop at a great price, 2011-06-08
Captain: , Warsaw, Ky (875)

Good value. A bit bumpy due to wind coming up the Elizabeth River. Can't beat the price. Josh was very helpful getting docked. Would stay here again.

Great staff, 2011-06-07
Captain: , Bristol, RI (866)

We left the boat here for two weeks. The docks are a little old but they do the job and the staff (Josh and Mike) couldn't have been better. The price was astonishingly low. Easy walk or dinghy into town. We really enjoyed Elizabeth City. A great stop.

Good marina for overnight., 2011-05-07
Captain: , Isle of Palms, SC (314)

5-5-11. Stayed here after getting beat up by wind in the Alligator River, Albermarle sound and the Pasquotank River. One the only face dock he had-- not floating. Discovered the morning we left-- n o water. Did not have a 50amp for us, but did have 1 30amp that we got by on. Josh and Mike were very nice and helpful. The marina store did noy have much, but the is agrocery store that will come get you and bring you back-- 3 times a day if you give them notice. Best thing was taking the dingy to the City dingy dock and walking around Elizabeth City. Excellent places to eat, artsy, etc.. the City wharf seemed full and only about 2 berths seemed wide enuf for our cat boat. Best thing about Pelican Marine--35$ for any size boat and includes power.

A nice stopover, 2011-02-06
Captain: , Gloucester, VA (514)

Close enough to restaurants to make life easy. Friendly staff and nice shower/bath facilities. Reasonable rates. Would frequent this facility again...

The Pelican Marina, 2011-01-07
Captain: , Elizabeth City, NC (31)

Marina is a bit out dated, but still has an old home town feel to it. Dock Master is very helpful. The store has an old town charm. It's stock well enough to make minor repairs. No fuel is available.
Transit dock - yes

Wonderful marina - better people, 2010-12-10
Captain: , Detroit, MI (160)

This marina was basic looking, but the showers were hot and clean. Washer/dryer really made the difference for us. The harbor master recommended the restaurant next door (Mariners) and the food was so good we went twice! The local grocery store picked us up for shopping. Couldn't be a better stop.

Great Place, Nice People, 2009-10-08
Captain: , Stuart, FL (426)

I would definitely come back. 1/2 mile walk to town, free shuttle to grocery, $35 includes everything and super nice people. Some nice places in town. Groupers restaurant and the deli are both good.
