Reviews for The Harborage at Ashley Marina
Beware of Current, 2017-07-13
Captain: , Denver (200)

Stayed here earlier this spring and current was extreme IN the marina. Should only dock here at high slack tide. Local live aboards told us that 3 or 4 boats crash each week because the staff doesn't warn them of the extreme current. We would not stay here again.

Nice option for visiting Charleston, 2017-05-07
Captain: , Charleston,SC (30)

good location and fuel available there, or across the river at sister marine (Ripley).

Always a pleasure, 2017-05-06
Captain: , LRYC, Beaconsfield, Quebec (11)

Great marina to stay for your visit to Charleston. Staff super friendly and helpful. Shuttle service great. Only downside is the poor WiFi. The hardware seems to be there, but the connection is non existent. You'd expect a better effort in a major Harbour like this.

Very Accommodating, 2017-05-05
Captain: , Georgetown, MD (372)

These guys are very accommodating and will help you any way they can. They have a courtesy shuttle and will take you to the grocery store and pick you up or just take you into town.

The current comes through here quickly so try to plan arrival and departure for slack current. The bathrooms are clean but they might be a long way away. The gates have security codes. This was our second stay here and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Welcoming marina, great city!, 2017-04-12
Captain: , Annapolis (170)

Spent two nights here and could have stayed longer. Dock hands also served as shuttle drivers to town. Clean showers (although a bit of a hike), nice floating docks and friendly staff.

Clean and modern, 2017-02-02
Captain: , Fanning Island, FL (248)

We stayed for almost a week and hated to have to leave! Great bathrooms, always locked and clean. Secured gate at night! Easy to get around and into Charleston either by foot, shuttle or bikes. We will return!

Always our favorite in Charleston, 2017-01-17
Captain: , Charlotte, vt (30)

This is our favorite marina in Charleston. Not fancy, it's easy, friendly, and comfortable.

Second time here, 2016-12-30
Captain: , Maple Shade NJ (612)

This is our second time staying here for a few days while visiting friends in Summerville first last spring and again this past week. The dock hands are a great help with docking in the current. It's better protected than the City Marina though not as close to the sights of Charleston but they provide a complimentary shuttle which we didn't use since we were visiting out of town. The bathrooms and laundry are clean and the docks are well maintained and everyone we met was friendly and helpful. I would stay here again and recommend it to anyone who can clear the 56 foot bridge. One note if you are getting diesel in a smaller boat the nozzle is really big.

Nice, but watch the current!, 2016-11-29
Captain: , Rockland Maine (344)

As others have noted, good facilities, well maintained by a friendly, competent staff, but the currents through the slips are wicked. We were hit by a 46' Grand Banks who lost control, even with bow thruster doing its best. Since then we've been told such bumps are common. Waiting for slack current is a must when maneuvering, as the space between the finger piers is tight. Fuel dock is easy in/out since it parallels the current.

Good marina, 2016-11-19
Captain: , Massapequa,NY (1176)

Nice floating docks, good dock hands, feels secure.

Marina is a real find, 2016-11-18
Captain: , Hampton, Va (10)

Great Hospitality and excellent dockhands made the stay very nice. Current and wind can make docking an experience so plan accordingly. Near by is The Citadel see a parade on Friday by the Corps of Cadets- a great visit many miss.

everything was good, staff was helpful

Much to offer but---, 2016-04-17
Captain: , Orcas (142)

Floating docks in great condition. Friendly and competent staff. Bathrooms and showers in great shape. Laundry has no hot water. Courtesy van is very useful as shoreside amenities and attractions are a long walk. There is a strange constant wave action on the beam a good share of the day causing the boat to roll uncomfortably. This doesn't seem to be wake related as it is constant though the intensity varies. Couldn't determine whether it was current/wind generated or something else. All the boats in the marina were rolling though it was worse on the channel side. It seemed to settle down overnight. This occurred each of five days we were there. Without this we would have enjoyed our stay.

Very good place to stay when visiting Charleston, 2015-11-13
Captain: , Chicago, Racine, Fish Creek,Wi (3189)

Electric for 30A was $7.50 a day. If you pay for five days they let stay for seven. We came in at slack tide which made it easy. Definately could be tricky if you came in or left without slack tide. Staff friendly and helpful. Van to town a great plus just have to tip driver. Had a mechanical problem and staff came through with good recomendations for help. Washroom could be cleaner but they are heavlly used by whole marina. Wakes not much of a problem especially if you are a inside slip. Would definately stay again if in Charleston.

The Harborage at Ashley Marina, 2015-11-06
Captain: , Halifax, Nova Scotia (70)

Great location to enjoy everything Charleston has to offer. All facilities and services available including courtesy van to downtown area. Current can be strong but manageable with dock hands.

Not worth the cost, 2015-10-29
Captain: , Deltaville, VA (21)

Bathrooms needed cleaning/updating. We were charged 3 additional feet due to a dinghy. Dock hand was highly adequate.

Great Location, 2015-10-19
Captain: , Hull, MA (720)

Marina is conveniently locasted off the ICW. The marina has floating docks that are in very good condition. Restrooms and shower facilities are spacious, tiled and clean. There is also a laundry faciltiy 2washers and 2 dryers. what was really nice there was no slapping noise from the current of the hull so we had a great night sleep--very quiet!! Great location to explore downtown Charleston. Dockage rate $2/ft plus $12/day for 50 amp

Well it started out OK at least, 2015-09-28
Captain: , Charleston, SC (220)

One parking spot per boat-so much for having friends and family over! Manager recommended parking at "Veterinary" (Veterans) hospital across the walled median highway. You must be sure and put parking pass on dash or the dock boys will out you to the booters. It appears marina gets a cut. Long walk to parking lot that floods (It floods in areas that are not signed which came within inch and a half of making it a seroius matter. Facilities are so-so. Stayed there a month and moved on to much greener pastures at SJYH. It's nice have folks that apprecite the business.

Harborage Marina at Ashley, 2015-05-07
Captain: , Stuart Fl (300)

May 4 2015
This was our third time at this facility. We were docked almost all the way inside the face dock not too far from the office. Relatively quiet spot. Docks were solid but spattered with bird poop. Strong current made it tough to get out. Liked the spot we were in before better. They have shuttle service into town but we did not use this time.

October 25, 2014 This was our second time at this facility. Docked at the end of I dock - easy in and out. Very long walk to office but OK. Docks are cluttered but solid. Lots of live aboards and locals. Shuttle available on demand to take us into town and pick us up. Did not use facilities so cannot comment on them. Staff friendly and knowledgeable.

October 25, 2013 This was our first visit to this marina. We were put on a T-head at the end of I dock just inside the outermost dock. This was an easy docking and departure with the tide and current helping us. Locals told us that the current is very strong and can be a problem at the wrong time. I guess we timed it right with lots of luck. Nice facility. A long walk to the office. Courtesy shuttle on demand took us into town and picked us up when we called them. We will go back again.

Very Convenient and our new First Choice, 2015-01-21
Captain: , Saint Michaels (320)

We stayed here 3 nights 11/11/2014 leaving 11/13/2014. The staff was helpful and friendly. There are a lot of long term boats here.
During working hours we used their shuttle several times. The heads and showers were not too far away.
Coming in we knew we had a mechanical problem. On the phone the staff suggested a vendor: Charleston Boatyard - by the time we got tied up and I called them again I was told a mechanic was on his way. Wonderful service.
This place is an easy walk to the Charleston Yacht Club.
The Charleston City Marina was full. We can make the 55 ft. bridge to get into the Harborage with no problem. In the future we will make this our first choice.
The only issue I would take with the place is that the heads could be a bit cleaner.

A large mid grade marina, though a good stop when City Marina is not available, 2014-11-06
Captain: , Essex (140)

We arrived on November 1st with most marinas full. Harborage is a rather large marina with capable dockhands but we did find that the facilities of the marina were limited for such a large operation. They nolonger sell ice, though they will drive you to a gas station to pick up cubes. Blocks are not available. No wifi but cable TV is available at the power post. The washroom/shower is in a separate office building off the marina property and has only a single shower. It is also, as noted below, dark and not the cleanest. The docks are set up with multiple joining docks which makes the arrival somewhat tricky with strong currents. They are also difficult to walk along in the evening because of the intruding cleats and miscellaneous items the large number of liveaboards tend to leave outside of their vessels.
The marina as mentioned does have a courtesy car which operateds through till 6:30pm and cabs are available. But beware to ask the cab operators what the charge will be when making reservations as they vary from $12 to $20 for the same trip into town.

Disappointing and indifferent, 2014-04-15
Captain: , Oriental, N.C. (352)

Sadly, for its location, The Harborage does not measure up to its location or potential. THe dock staff was capable and friendly, but the facilities were sub-par at this price point. No pumpout facility available when we were there. The men's bathroom was dark and dirty. Docks were in good condition, but lettered with obstructions. We'll skip this one next time.

Condo Marina, 2014-04-09
Captain: , Deltaville, VA (602)

Very nice, large (235 slips) marina. All the standard amenities including cable TV. Long walk to restrooms and showers depending on your slip location. Lots of liveaboards in this marina. No courtesy car but they have a shuttle van that will take you across the peninsula to historic downtown area or to get provisions. No ships store or restaurant on site.
Minus points because the pumpout did not work for the two weeks we were there, and I got the idea that they were in no hurry to fix it. Perhaps it is just me, but I get the idea that condo marinas that are run by management companies instead of owners would rather not be bothered with transients.

Disappointing, 2014-03-20
Captain: , Philadelphia, Pa (41)

No help at the fuel dock or slip with lines. Courtesy van does not go to west marine (my only reason for docking in Charleston). Clean facilities. Other than aribitrary rules, laziness and rude attitude they're great.

Ok, but..., 2013-12-21
Captain: , Portsmouth, Va (174)

Our first visit to this marina, 11/7-8/2013. I think we were unable to get reservations at our usual stops because of the holiday weekend. We got an inside slip and were fortunate to have the current favorable for docking. The current in the Ashley R. can be tough at times. It%u2019s a long walk to the office or shower. The shower facility is nice, but could use some management oversight on the maintenance. There was mold and mud in both the men & women facilities. They could benefit from a power wash for sure. The pier office, obviously staffed by part time college students, was %u201Ckept more like a frat house%u201C, as the admiral put it. On the positive side, the staff was congenial and the courtesy shuttle took us into town and picked us up when we called them.

Good base for sightseeing, 2013-11-21
Captain: , Pasadena,Maryland (510)

Location is isolated from historic areas, but on-demand shuttle is readily available. Shuttle to Harris Teeter. Shuttle responded to phone call, and would go anywhere in city. Laundry, bathroom, showers, fuel, pump-out.

Harborage @ Ashley Marina, 2013-10-24
Captain: , Sandwich (722)

This marina is huge on the Ashley River adjacent to a major highway bridge that can be noisy. The currents are swift. The docks could be cleaner as the baths and shower areas. Laundry facility available. Courtesy shuttle service to/from Harris Teeter. About 1-1/2 mile walk to King Street and Market Streets the hub of Charleston. Explore the many streets off Market and King where huge southern mansions can be found. Manzo an excellent meal on King serves gourmet pizzas and specialty Italian dishes. Pearlz has great fresh raw oysters.

Wow Now That's a Dock, 2013-07-27
Captain: , Anna Maria Island (573)

Home of the Mega Dock well it truly is. Helpful friendly staff, shuttle service, they deliver to your boat many boater necessities. Enjoyed our time here.

Excellent Home Port, 2013-04-29
Captain: , Charleston, SC (75)

I have been home porting out of the marina since February and love it. The current can be very strong so use caution for you arrival. Slack tide is the best. Very deep, (30' at high tide and 24-25' at MLT) The dock hands are great and will help you tie up if you need. Extremely close to downtown ammenities and good fireworks show during base ball games just to the West of the Marina. I highly recommend this place!

Still a great marina, 2013-04-22
Captain: , Hartfield (281)

When we last stayed here in 2001 it was a good commercial marina. It has converted to dockominium ownership but is well run for transients. Because of the bridge restriction we were able to find a place here when all the other sailboat marinas were full because of race week. The van made the city assessible and the folks who run the marina make it a pleasure. We have been holed up here awaiting cessation of the gale that marked race week.

Good layover, 2013-04-17
Captain: , Annapolis MD (30)

Excellent transient dock, good dock help, lots of current

Very Nice Marina for longer periods, 2012-12-20
Captain: , Solomons, MD (1025)

Although daily prices are high, if you can stay for a month or so, the rates are much more affordable. There is certainly enough to do in and around Charleston for a month. With the van in service, everything is fairly close. Moreover, the staff is very cooperative and professional.

Two cautions, however: (1) Time your arrival for slack tide as the current whipping through the marina can be vicious and, when the marina is full, the fairway leading to the various docks can be narrow. (2) The marina is BIG, From our slip to the parking lot was over a half mile. So, try to get a slip a bit closer to the parking lot if you plan on taking anything back and forth.

Great People and Love the Courtesy Van, 2012-11-20
Captain: , Miami Beach (630)

We arrived 11/19/12 and were talked in and met at the fuel dock. We were then directed to our slip where we were met again by helpful staff as well as fellow cruisers who helped get us into the slip. After 2 days of rainy cold, the hot shower was a pleasure and the shower itself was clean and neat. The young men who worked the van, also worked the docks and both were personable, helpful and had great local knowledge about Charleston. Charleston itself is lovely and getting ready for Christmas. Even the horses were sporting Xmas stuff. Would highly recommend to anyone staying in Charleston.

Good alternative, 2012-11-18
Captain: , Philadelphia (510)

We stayed here three days, in a rainy and cold Charleston. I had stayed several times at the City Marina before, but they had no dockage available this time, so we diverted to the Ashley Marina. I liked it, it is better protected than the City Marina, has friendly staff, and a courtesy van that operates on demand until 1700. A little farther from down-town, but still within walking distance. Showers, laundry and restrooms are adequate. Pricey, but I guess $2 a ft is the going rate here in Charleston. Great breakfast at the restaurant near the City Marina ("Marina Variety Store"), a short walk across the bridge.

A Mixed Bag, 2012-06-19
Captain: , Windy (170)

Ashley Marina is well protected between the two bridges. The docks float and are in good shape. The van service is a plus because there is really nothing close by if you need to shop or eat (one restauraunt is about 1/3 mile walk across the bridge). There is no store or food on site. I wound up getting breakfast at the Mariot (the marina doesn't recommend this but it was good and cheap). Bath facilities are okay. Marina staff were friendly. Would have been a better experince with a bike. $2 a foot seems high for this location and package.

The Van Lives!, 2012-05-21
Captain: , Gloucester, Mass. (799)

Ashley's venerable white whale of a van is back in service. Credit should be given the dock staff for encouraging the Powers That Be to bring this about. Before the van was fixed we discovered that all the medical facilities and doctors of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) are only a mile away and Harris Teeter is a pleasant 2-mile walk. Yellow Cab fare to or from is $7.50 for two people.

Still no courtesy van, 2012-05-13
Captain: , Santa Cruz (243)

The van is still out of service, so we ended up renting a car to get around. The 50 amp service price is up to $12/day. Fairly easy to get in and out if you wait till slack water.

No van this week, 2012-04-30
Captain: , Solomons, MD (232)

The van is out of order this week. The marina recommends two cab companies. You should know that Black Cab does not run on a meter and costs $20 for anywhere in town and when we called them they could not have sent a cab for a least 1 1/2 hours. The Yellow Cab is metered and will cost about $7.50 and they responded right away.
Very helpful staff at the marina but the lack of the van adds significantly to the cost of the stay.
Great Harris Teeter with a True Value hardware store adjacent.
Wonderful lunch at S.N.O.B.

stopped on 11/03/11, 2012-03-10
Captain: , Bear, DE (255)

We plan to keep our boat here for the winter. So far this is everything I could ask for. After we are here for a bit I will re-rate this facility but things are looking great so far.
12/12/11 update: After a month here I am not disappointed in the least. Marina staff very cordial and helpful. Very dilligent in maintaining showers, rest rooms and docks. Strong but predictable currents but play the slack tide or know the current and docking is no problem. Much to do (and eat) in Charleston.
1/20/12 update: Still enjoying Ashley and Charleston. Yes try to dock at slack tide but avoid the ebb tide flow. You will need a lot of power to offset it. Otherwise docking OK.
3/03/12 update: After spending the winter I have moved my rating from 4 stars to 5 stars and the staff has earned it.

Overnight stay, 2011-12-06
Captain: , Pawleys Island (114)

even though we were on the outside, it was very calm and quiet all night long. We've used this facility a few times and never had a problem but did manage a great nights sleep. Easy in and out.

Very professional Staff, 2011-12-03
Captain: , Newport, R.I. (644)

Excellent Staff and professional Marina! Close to ICW and easy taxi ride into the city to take in some culture & She crab soup!

Great Marina., 2011-11-02
Captain: , Daytona Beach, FL (533)

We stayed here for 3 nights and greatly enjoyed it. The bridge to the W was a bit noisy because of the grate design, but not too bad. Nice people. Seemed a bit far to most things we wanted to do.

A stop for one night, 2011-08-02
Captain: , Palmetto Fl (545)

Long walk to the bathrooms. Bathrooms are clean, but only 2 for such a large marina. Short bike ride to bar/restaurant at yacht club but everything else is far away. Car or bike needed, but marina offers courtesy van on demand with driver for trips to West Marine or grocery store. Tidal current can be strong. Dockhands are capable and helpful. If you are staying in Charleston, this is the place that has what you need.

Charleston is a great city to visit, 2011-05-22
Captain: , Knapps Narrows Md (450)

We spent 2 days here to viist the city of Charleston. The staff was helpful, the pump out worked and the docks have long finger piers. They have a free van shuttle to take you into the city and you just call them when you want to be picked up. They also do a daily trip to West Marine if you need supplies.

May 17,2011, 2011-05-18
Captain: , Maryland Yacht Club, Pasadena Md (81)

Stayed 2 nights and the current was not too bad but we arrived at near high tide and were on an inside dock. Nice place we will stay here again

Great marina at a good price., 2011-05-15
Captain: , St. Petersburg, FL (227)

We stayed here while in Charleston and found it a well run, professional marina. It only lacked a club house and bar. This marina was less expensive than the city marina next door, so is a good buy. They have a shuttle van, but you really need wheels here to see the city and shop.

Had an Enjoyable Stay Here, 2011-05-15
Captain: , Cleveland (2083)

We found the folks here very helpful in docking. The review about the current is correct - it can be strong. Because we have a single engine and no bow thruster, the dockmaster suggested we stay on the outside face dock. That worked well. Some wake from passing boats but nothing major at all - even on a Friday.

The city is bike friendly as we were able to ride all over town on either bike paths or sidewalks. The main waterfront with it's fun fountains and pier with swings is worth a visit. If you don't have bikes the marina has a shuttle that will take you where you want. There is a daily West Marine trip at 2 pm!

Safe and Clean, 2011-01-12
Captain: , Utica, Ohio (245)

Spending the winter here in 2010, and have found the facility to be top notch. Depending on your slip you may have quite a walk to the facilities, but the place is very well maintianed and convenient to downtown. The shuttle service is very nice. There are a lot of liveaboards, and we've felt safe walking throughout the area day or night. The current is a factor, and you must be mindful of it coming or going but the slips and fairway are wide. The bridge clearance is +/- 52 ft at high tide. Call the marina if in doubt.

out of the loop from downtown, 2010-12-09
Captain: , Wilmington Deleware (330)

We have stayed here twice in the last year. The staff is friendly and very helpful. The face dock can be a bit bumpy. The marina runs a shuttle during the day and the wait is not usually long. The walk from downtown restaurants is long and dark at night, so best to us a cab.

only if you like current, 2010-12-03
Captain: , MONARCH. COLORADO (1156)

I hate to rain on the parade but this marina is not one of my favorites for two reasons, the current runs pretty stron here making getting into an inner slip a real challenge secondly they staff with mostly college kids who have no boat experience which can lead to troublesome docking. We did over a thousand dollars worth of damage to our boat here because of this combination and when presented to the management they just blew it off. Not my kinda place.

Ashley Marina review, 2010-01-31
Captain: , Robbinsvill, NJ (148)

This is a great marina with a lot of liveaboards and very clean facilities. The staff is superior and knowledgeable. Great place to stop for a day or a year. Convenient to downtown Charleston.

an alternative to the City Marina, 2008-11-02
Captain: , Miami, fl (3666)

good place, but fuel is significantly higher than the City Marina next door, so it's jsut a good alternate if City is full or if weather can be an issue since it has better protection.
