Additional info:

Approach is up Washington Channel, which is both pretty and fairly safe. There are often anchored vessels, and you should look out for debris (tree branches and wood) but that's about it. You won't encounter much on the approach here that you have not encountered at many, many other marinas.

Gangplank Marina at the Wharf, 2017-04-19
Captain: , Athens, AL (112)

Stayed 4-11-2017 till 4-16-2017, two nights on mooring and three nights in a slip. Dan and Tony were very helpful and great to deal with. Enjoyed the Capital and was a great location for seeing historic sights and our nations seat of goverment. Very easy to shopping at the Safeway just a couple of blocks away. The entire wharf area is under construction with Phase I scheduled to be completed in October of 2017 and Phase II starting. The construction was never a problem in terms of noise or restriction of access to the National Mall. Be prepared though for lots of low level helicopter flights as the Washington Channel is used as a fly way for Pentagon personnel being taxied into work. Possible even the POTUS might helicopter by in Marine 1.

Mooring Balls at Gangplank marina, 2016-07-04
Captain: , Largo, FL (120)

New mooring balls are now available at Gangplank marina! The balls are close to the park on Potomac island. There is a decent grocery store with a CVS pharmacy only a few blocks from the marina and the metro station is across from the grocery store. There is a pump out boat that is available to people in the anchorage and on the morring balls Mon- Friday.

Captain: , Fort Pierce City Marina, FL (460)

We spent several nights here and found it to be a perfect location for visiting Washington, especially by bike! Their new dockmaster lives in the marina and was quite helpful getting us in and providing guidance about the area. There was a great jazz group performing at the entrance to the marina on Thurs nite - no charge. The docks were old but are scheduled for replacement as part of the massive marina overhaul which is underway.

Best price in town $1.50 per ft., 2015-05-24
Captain: , Herrington Harbour, MD (680)

As promised, thjey did not meet us, did not answer their phone, and we had to find our slip ourselves on a Sunday. NO wifi at all. Nothing works. A very location to visit Washington. Close to a great Safeway
super market. They are going to included in the BIG upgrade of the whole Channell, but less slips and higher prices. Friedly people on live aboards.

Captain: , Sneads Ferry, NC (351)

We stayed here a week while we toured every museum, monument, and memorial in town. Nice folks, active liveaboard community (with weekly potluck), good security. Lots of helicopters flying by at all hours, but a 10 minute bike ride to the National Mall. Hope the rates are still reasonable when they finish their ambitious development.

great access to dc by dinghy, 2014-10-10
Captain: , West Gardiner, ME (735)

Friendly staff, very clean bathrooms, alert and friendly 24 hour security. Small dinghy dock, but great access to all in dc. Metro an easy walk.

Home for a week., 2014-07-25
Captain: , Redondo Beach, CA (260)

I've read several reviews that say the facilities are outdated and run down. These people must have REALLY high standards for marinas. Yes they have older wooden docks so bare feet not recommended. But besides that, this is a stellar location with friendly staff, remodeled bathrooms and great security. And apparently the only bar in DC with boat docks. Highly recommended.

Very Nice, Great Location, 2014-07-21
Captain: , Little River, SC (2037)

For the price, this marina has everything going for it. The floating docks have some age but are serviceable. The restrooms/showers are modern and fastidiously cleaned. The on-site Marina Cantina has decent food and the Seafood Market within easy walking distance is not to be missed. Safeway grocery and CVS are less than 1/2 mile. we came for 2 days and wound up staying for 4. The Smithsonian museum and National Mall are also within walking distance. Definitely recommend. The construction was not a problem at this time.

Great value, and still open!, 2014-05-25
Captain: , Bayfield, WI and the ICW (1400)

This place has the best access to everything in DC, even though it's about to change, a lot. Construction issues didn't impact us a bit. Rest rooms are above average, docks are below average, but who cares what the docks look like? Great protection and the expansion plans include transient space. Only a five minute walk from a great supermarket and the Waterfront station on the Metro Green Line and five minutes from the Fish Wharf and ten to the Mall.

What a loss, 2013-09-22
Captain: , Vero Beach, FL (654)

We spent six weeks at the Gangplank Marina although the marina is falling down due to lack of maintenance; there is no better location to the nation%u2019s mall, monuments, and museums. It%u2019s a shame this marina will soon be torn down to build condos and upscale apartments in the next few months with us boaters being the real looser. There is no closer location for a transit boater to enjoy Washington DC. If the schedule remains in the summer of 2014 this marina will a construction site. The same fate will be for the properties all along Water Street. Enjoy while you can soon it will be just a memory.

Great Access to D.C., 2013-09-17
Captain: , Stafford, VA (305)

We spent a month there over one summer. The dockmaster is very helpful. You can easily walk to a Metrorail station. The Circulator bus stops very close. For an extended stay, you can sign up for weekly pumpouts, but be aware that they start at opposite ends of the marina on alternate weeks. So you might go 10 days between weekly pumpouts.
There are many live-aboards, some of which ignore pet leash rules. It was a daily event for me to wash dog crap off the pier.
The entire D.C. waterfront is under rennovation, so be sure to call ahead.

Wonderful location, 2012-09-21
Captain: , hampstead.n.c. (219)

We just completed a delightful week stay at Gangplank Marina. The staff is very helpful. Right now the docks do NOT have their number on at the slips, so when we were assigned to F-21 and were coming in, there were no numbers to tell us which slip to occupy. We relied on the kindness of strangers to guide us in. The location could not be better for seeing the sights of DC.
The Marina is going to undergoing renovation starting jan 1, 2013, so availability for 2013 is uncertain. Call or e-mail in advance to make plans.

Captain: , Pasadena,Maryland (510)

Very convenient location to METRO and Safeway. Staff was friendly, but did not assist with docking. Very secure with 24 hour security guard. Toilets/showers were clean, but were a loooong way away. Not really set up for transients.

8-day stay in Washington DC, 2011-11-28
Captain: , Fremantle, West Australia (1448)

Very friendly place. No fuel. Scheduled pumpout from your slip. Close to access points (subway stations) for getting artound. Mostly caters to liveaboards but transients OK but not over Xmas - check first. Dockmaster Jeremy is excellent. Office staff too, as are dockworkers. Excellent longer term rates

Fabulous location, 2011-11-05
Captain: , Halifax, NS (400)

Its not the Ritz. (You live on a boat, you'll get over it.) The facilities are fine: clean washrooms and showers, good laundry, great staff. The transient rates are such that if you stay for 10 days you could stay for a month for the same amount. Ten minute walk to the National Mall and all those fantastic free museums. Ten minute walk to a great Safeway and the oldest and maybe the best fish market in the country.

Good long term rates, 2011-10-01
Captain: , Portsmouth, NH (274)

Gangplank is an average marina with 24 hour security, clean facitilties and good long term rates. The location is fabulous. Close to all the attractions and the Metro. There is a Safeway supermarket within walking distance that is new and a good place to stock up.

As Close as You Can Get With a Boat to Downtown DC, 2011-08-06
Captain: , Full Time Cruisers (2244)

Yes the docks are wooden and some complain about the state of repair. Actually they are not that bad and repairs were ongoing during our stay. Queit marina with little or no wake, no current with floating docks. Call in advance to check on transient availabilty, dockmaster Jeremy is a great guy . Great location, 5 minute walk to "Circulator" bus stop, 10 minute ride (or less) to national mall via 7th street. 10 minute walk to Safeway grocery store.

Near all good restrnts, 2011-07-12
Captain: , Washington, DC (350)

Food here is very good, and close to other dining just up the street, where there is also a fish market that has EVERYTHING you could imagine, even steamed crabs ready to eat or take back aboard.

Captain: , Baddeck, Nova Scotia (160)

The Gangplank Marina is a bit long in the tooth and is in desperate need of a faclift but Dockmaster Jerremy Heckler and the marina's location make up for its shortcomings. Getting to any of the tourist attractions is easy and straightforward, approach from the Potomac is calm and well protected and the staff are friendly and well informed.
Wi-fi on the dock was the only thing we were lacking but it too was available nearby.
Not sure I'll be back in the Potomac but if so, I'd book at Gangplank without hesitation

Cheap and friendly, 2011-07-02
Captain: , Palmetto Fl (545)

Ok, let's just say it's run down. The docks are floating but old. Watch your step, you might trip over the uneven dock boards. Jeremy helped me dredge after hours for a bike that got knocked off the dock by a wake(no wake zone!). No luck. A liveaboard helped us locate a diver on the 4th July weekend and the next day we had the bike back. Great place, friendly and nice but small bathrooms.

Dinghy access from Washington Channel Anchorage, 2010-09-24
Captain: , Ridge, MD (58)

The Gangplank Marina is staffed by very pleasant folks who welcome you to use their showers and coin laundry and provide you with gated secure dinghy dockage for a fee of only $10 a day (June, 2010)...this puts you in realistic walking distance (about a mile) from The Washington Mall and, I think, just less than 3 miles walking distance from The Wall/Korean Memorial, excellent/economical way to visit DC.

Gang Plank Marina Convenience, 2010-08-15
Captain: , Green Cove Springs FL (1394)

Finishing up a 9 day stay at Gang Plank. Everything is so convenient to the Marina. the Circulator Bus is right across the street. Connections to anywhere and everything is just a short distance. Bicycles are easy way to get around. Be sure to lock your Bike Seat to your Bike as some folks like to collect seats. Dock Master Jeremy Heckler and his staff are super folks. Great ON-Board check-in and greeting. M/Y Allez!

Gang Plank Marina, 2010-08-09
Captain: , On the water (1501)

Jay, the GM of the marina, met us and helped us get tied up. He brought all sorts of "tourist" info and we had a great chat with him! We were located on "H"Dock which is a LONG way to the main office. If a person could get on A-E docks you would be much better off. The marina is in fair condition but it appears that they are working on upgrading it. A little noisy with the airport and helicopters going by but all in all a good visit!

A month at Gangplank absolutely FLEW!!!, 2010-08-08
Captain: , Jacksonville, FL (370)

What a great location to see the city and its "burbs". This was a wonderful stop and we look forward to returning. The staff is great---very accommodating, helpful, and up-beat. A brand new SafeWay, Starbucks and CVS are 2 blocks away. Just across the street is a new performing arts center. We highly recommend this stop and a month is not long enough!!!

Marina is very nice, neighborhood not so much, 2010-04-14
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (1342)

I spent three months here over the winter of Dec 2006 - Feb 2007. The marina is great, and has readily accessible winter water throughout. It is a half-mile or so walk to the Metro. There is a Safeway right next to the Metro.

The neighborhood is a little grungy and a bit off-putting. I enjoyed my time in DC but won't do it again.

Gangplank Marina, 2010-04-01
Captain: , Old Saybrook, CT (1021)

Very friendly and helpful staff. Easy walk to groceries, Metro, restaurants, the Mall, a great outdoor fish market, etc. Many liveaboards on both houseboats and conventional boats. The click of high heels on the dock in the early morning signals the start of the work day for the business men and women who live aboard. In the middle of everything, but relatively quiet. Guarded security gate.

fun in dc, 2009-08-07
Captain: , washington dc (10)

wow who guessed you could have so much access. museums bars metro, its all there. loved the staffand the washington channel is so protected.

Gangplank Marina, 2009-08-06
Captain: , St. Petersburg, FL (330)

Location, location, location! Great for walking or biking to the Mall and other historic sites. Grocery and CVS within easy walk. Two Metro stations also an easy walk. Fish market within a block. Marina itself was just okay, a little rickety - watch for potential shore power issues. Staff is nice, security is great.
Four stars based on location and access to practical needs. Two stars for the marina itself.

Congressional Marina, 2007-11-30
Captain: , annapolis (183)

Gangplank is downtown Washington DC's primary marina and it plays home to many boats owned by members of Congress, lobbyists and other politicios. It is not unusual to see limousines out front (I know this because I kept my boat there for a season).

The marina has first-class services, befitting a place with a large live-aboard population. It is a large facility, so if you are on the piers farther from the marina buildings, be prepared for a hike.

The marina is extremely safe, with a 24-hour guard on duty and a bevy of people walking around, seemingly at all hours. But it can be noisy. The docks abut a series of waterfront clubs that keep the music thumping past 1 a.m.

Overall, it's a very nice place.

Great location, worn -out facility, 2007-08-09
Captain: , Lighthouse Point, FL (79)

3 minute walk from Metro stop and Safeway Supermarket.
View of Washington Monument from the docks. The docks and facilities need an extreme makeover. Dockmaster said they were going to close in 2008 for a complete rehab-NOT CONFIRMED

Is that the Washington Monument?, 2007-01-25
Captain: , portland, me (41)

This is definitely a liveaboard marina, showers and bathrooms are very clean. Don't expect any assistance getting into the tightly packed slips, there are no dockhands. Trash cans and recycling bins are in many handy locations, security is good, the docks are in so-so shape, it's a LONG walk from the outer most slips to the showers and heads. Not only are you right next to the Fresh Seafood Market, but the Mall is a short 15 minute walk away. Talk about centrally located.

You're In DC!, 2007-01-19
Captain: , Woodbridge, VA (137)

There's a waterfront project that DC has been working on for years. Because of that, the Gangplank could use some moderization. The docks are floating and in fair shape. All power I believe is 50A/220V and they have some limited number of adapters. The manager is a good guy, but if he's not on the radio it could be a real challenge to get the security guard to answer the radio. Therefore, get your slip assignment well in advance of your approach. The heads and showers are maintained, as you'd expect with the number of live aboards that use this marina. DC is within easy walking distance and public transportation is available. The DC seafood warf is steps away, and there are a couple of restaurants right there as well. Of the DC marinas, I most often stay here.
