Reviews for Tall Timbers Marina
Friendly folks, small marina, 2016-10-19
Captain: , North East, MD (316)

Make a reservation if possible, since most of slips belong to local boats. Very helpful owner and staff, bathrooms up the hill, walk 1/2 mile to town.

Great Stop, friendly people, 2016-09-14
Captain: , Grand Rivers, Ky (1522)

9-3-16 This was a great stop for us, the owner helped us get into a slip and gave us great local knowledge for our journey south. They have a good garlic pizza, and had live music the night we were there. The river level was above normal when we arrived so contact the marina for current conditions before entering.

Great stopover on the Illinois River, 2016-09-03
Captain: , Mystic, CT (180)

Stayed one night while enroute downbound on the Illinois River. Nice marina protected from river wakes and most wind directions. Easy in. Clean. Docks in great shape. Plenty of power. Good Wi-Fi. Provisions within walking distance, including a very large diversely stocked general hardware store. Owner very friendly and accommodating. Laundry in town.

Great Place to Rest , 2016-09-01
Captain: , Frostproof Fl (110)

Liked the owner, liked the facilities, quiet and groceries and ace hardware close to Marina. This is not a large Marina but we enjoyed our stay there. Several tables at different places on dock and they are covered. Also 2 electric grills for use. Restrooms were very clean and spacious.

Very Helpful Owner, 2016-08-09
Captain: , St. Louis, Missouri (51)

Doing the loop we needed gas to make it to Grafton. Due to low water we were unwilling to try and get our 26 foot sail boat through the channel into the marina. We anchored outside and used our dinghy to carry fuel water and porta potty into the marina where everything was taken care of. Owner said that there was zero ethanol in his gas.

Very friendly and helpful staff; good beers on tap; mudslide on a hot day is great; water a bit shallow coming in.. but river was down four feet

owner lives on site and is very Accommodating, 2016-07-26
Captain: , Saint Charles (669)

updated 7-22-2016 stoped here for fuel very pricy and doesnt take CC cash or check only. $3.65 per gal. We stayed here in September 2014, very welcoming people, got in after hours and they were waiting for us at the gas dock. It%u2019s shallow coming in so call a head to make sure there is enough water for your draft. When we were here the water was high and I showed 3 foot under my 3 foot draft. Walked up town and ate at a local bar restaurant, about a 5 min walk.

transients ask price per foot 1st., 2016-07-25
Captain: , Louisiana, Mo. (180)

We stopped here after hanging on the hook the night before. I called ahead earlier in the day because we wanted to fill our water tank, use the showers and get rid of trash. It is a small and well protected harbor so the tight maneuvering getting into a slip wasn't a problem. It was a Saturday evening and they had a band, cold beer, large bags of ice and a friendly crowd. The 2016 Quimby's guide gave a rate of $1.1 which I figured was $1.10 per foot, wrong I was charged $2.00 per ft. This was my fault for not asking in advance, which I will always do in the future. Truthfully the Quimby's guide should take the hit for lower stars, I never dreamed a small Marina on this section of the Illinois River would charge $2.00 a foot, when I called he did tell me he would have to charge for my 17' center console I was towing, not a surprise. $111.00 for a 17' and a 38' was a surprise.

Very nice but shallow, 2015-10-10
Captain: , Beaver Island, MI (291)

We stayed Oct.8, 2015. Water was low with pool the day before at IVY 11.8, well below normal. By the next day at Tall Timbers it had dropped another 6"
On approach there is a bar just before entering and we measured depth at 3'8" and we draw 3'6". A bit nerve racking but at least the bottom is soft mud. Entrance is very narrow but don't worry, once in there is room. We had no problem manuvering with our Hatteras 43. Great place to walk you dog as well. Bar closed starting Oct. however so bring your own!

Enjoyable stop, 2015-09-25
Captain: , Yorktown, VA (300)

Cozy, eclectic, one of a kind marina...the kind of place you would like to hang around for a while. We had four large looper boats here for the night...marina could handle more. Bob, the owner made everyone feel at home and was most accommodating. At a buck a foot, free pump out, nice clean facilities, and nearby restaurants, I don't know why you would want to anchor out...which is the only other option in this part of the river. Water depth was not an issue during our stay...check with Bob for current conditions. For dinner try the "horseshoe" at "Babe's". It is a heart attack on a plate...Texas toast, hamburger, French fries, bacon, tomato, and cheese all piled together.

great marina, 2015-08-02
Captain: , Owensboro (40)

this was a very clean marina. the owner was awesome! caught our lines, told our kids about the public pool right across the street. bathrooms were immaculate. he even had the coolest ladies portapot restroom on the dock. decorated so cute!

Great quiet stop , 2014-09-18
Captain: , Austin, TX (757)

We stayed here last night, very quiet and enjoyable stop. Recommend this marina. Dollar Store close by with some groceries. Bob is very helpful.

Small, but good, 2014-09-13
Captain: , Massapequa,NY (986)

Best stop in the area. Bob the owner is great. Nice, small marina with electric & water. Not much in town.

Small, rustic but great, 2014-09-08
Captain: , Venice, Fl. (919)

Bob the owner is a very friendly and helpful guy. This marina is his hobby as he has a full time job. He has done a great job making it very comfortable with gazebos with picnic table scattered around. Even a kitchen area with grills. The restrooms/showers were spotless. It's a must stop! IGA grocery about a mile away.

Snuck Up on Us, 2014-09-07
Captain: , Wickford, RI (550)

Appeared at first glance to be too small and too basic. We were wrong. Nice sold floating docks, about a ten miunte walk into town with a few restaurants and minimal provisions, and spotless showers an easy walk up the steps. Nice view of the river traffic. The longer we stayed the more enjoyable we found it.

About the best small protected rustic beautiful functional marina along the Illinois River, 2014-07-29
Captain: , Moyock, NC (984)

Bob Skoglund is the owner operator of Tall Timbers Marina who has made many nice enhancements, which appear to be well engineered and architecturally appropriate. These include reworking of the marina docks, new roofs, rustic and nice remodeled shower / toilet interiors, and various quality décor items that give life and quality rustic enhancement to his establishment. The alternate sturdy wide concrete steps to the showers / toilets house is impressive. The atmosphere and people are welcoming and friendly. Being there is very comfortable. It is a placed you%u2019d want to return to and stay longer.

Very accomidating marina with easy access if water depth ok, 2014-07-17
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, Fl (6909)

Never stayed a such a small marina with such a positive service attitude. Bob and company are great and only need to be asked. Bath rooms are private and spotless although you must climb up steps to get to them at low pool. Even at that, Bob has installed a very upscale, clean Porta John for the lazy in need of a close toilet on the floating docks. Propane BarBQ/kichenet on dock near dock house.
Returned 07-17-14 and found the same stellar attitude and service effort from Bob as before. Wish more were like him.

Helpful Owner, 2013-09-16
Captain: , Beaufort, S.C. (570)

There are very few marinas in this area so we were happy to find Tall Timbers. Sign for marina is small so watch carefully for it when approaching. We are a 40ft M/V and draw 4ft. We did stir up some mud and carp as entering. Our depth finder indicated less than 6 inches under us, but the bottom is soft and we did not touch bottom. The entrance to this marina looks very narrow on approach, but it opens up once inside and the slips were plenty big for the 4 big boats we are traveling with. The marina owner was very nice and met and assisted each boat in getting settled. There are several nice areas to sit and grill or gather for a potluck. $1 a foot on 9-15-13.

Low water this year (2013), 2013-07-28
Captain: , Absarokee Mt (1228)

We draw 40 inches on our 48 Tollycraft, showed zero under keel on the way in but did not touch. A bar across the entrance is the shallow spot opens up with anther 6 -10 inches after that. Good power, great owner, call Bob and he will tell you the straight story. Swimming pool across the road, good restuarants and a grocery store all within walking distance. Pet Friendly!

Cash Only Marina, 2013-07-26
Captain: , Louisville (291)

This is a safe stop while traveling the Illinois River. Bob is friendly and accomodating, but runs this marina as his hobby. Be aware that they DO NOT take credit cards....only cash or check. Bugs are thick here after dark....

Tall Timbers Marina MM 120.3 always open, 2012-10-17
Captain: , Oshkosh , WI (194)

In the past we have seen comments regarding marina being closed. The only thing closed about this marina is during the winter the bar closes.
I think we are the last boat to go thru for the winter. Called Bobs cell 309 241 7957 and he helped us dock our 48' Californian. We were able to pivot around once inside the small harbor. In seem narrow at the approach but we have a 15 beam and made it in ok. We did have a little skinny water coming in but it just silt. Bob, the owner would have turned on the water for the showers but we did not need the showers. There is a post office, Dollar Tree, Ace Hardware, and Allisons Antique Mall as well as some restaurants. Very accomadating. The facilities are adequate as stated.

Very Good Marina, 2012-10-07
Captain: , St. Clair, Michigan (456)

Got in mid to late afternoon and had called ahead. The owner, Bob, was on his way home but gave us great directions on getting in and what slips were available because we were going to arrive before he did. He asked our draft because if you are much over 4' you will turn mud coming in.
Small layout but plenty of room in the back for the transients. good power and talking to Bob he has one of the few marinas that can still fully function even in flood mode.
Security gate to make sure you have peace of mind and not that long of a walk to downtown Havana where we had dinner at the Townhouse which was very good.
Due to the late date some of the marina facilities were already shut for the winter. Bob offerred to fire up the water heater for the showers if we wanted to use them but we declined.
I believe this is the last bonified marina before the Mississippi and it is worth the stop.

Very nice and comfortable marina, 2012-09-25
Captain: , Spring Lake, MI (379)

This marina reflects the care of the owner and it appears he designed and built many of the small structures surrounding the docks. The entrance is narrow and 4.5 ft deep inside as of 9/22/2012. The town is a short walk and has a Dollar store and a great hardware store plus the usual restaruants, bars and shops. It is very private and behind a berm mostly out of sight of the river. They have two electric barbeque grills the heat very quickly and cook extremely well. The members were all friendly and helpful.

Nice marina and staff, 2012-09-21
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (1696)

Marina is in a small basin through a narrow channel. Adequate depth. Has several long docks at the end. Plenty of room to turn around. Bob is very friendly and helpful. Internet access is available but did not work while we were there. Fuel and pump out. We did not get into Havana.

Great stop, 2012-09-10
Captain: , Englewood, Fl (351)

Great location, highly recommend this marina. Our draft is 4 ft and we had not probems. At entrance stay away from the white marker.

Nicest marina we have stayed at on this trip, 2012-09-06
Captain: , Cape Coral FL (4176)

What a great place ! Bob is a great marina manager - very personable. He has built this place and put in many small things that other places dont have - great docks, just the right height, secure WiFi, picnic lounge areas, gas grills, mist heads to cool you and hot days, right across the street from the pool, close to town. We bought some things at Dollar General - bread and some food, then had breakfast at Trixies. All very reasonable. This marina is strategically located. All Great Loopers should be stopping here because its the LAST marina for another 120 miles. Good power at the docks, 50amp or twin 30amp. If we were coming back this way this would be a MUST stop for us !

Excellent experience, 2011-10-24
Captain: , Channel Islands, California (1149)

Bob and Lynette operate a very class act. It is a very small marina and they make you feel at home. Nice friends and neighbors in the marina. Folks could not have been more accomodating. Close to town. Nice community.

A really sweet and restful place (Sept 2011), 2011-09-24
Captain: , Bayfield, Ontario (70)

A smaller marina with wonderful hospitality. Bob (the owner) bends over backwards to take care of you. Very peaceful setting, and a nice respite when travelling down the Illinois. Depth was just over 4 feet, although the river levels were really low. Close to town and restaurants and a grocery store. Loved it.

Shallow but nice, 2011-09-17
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

The river is very low which makes the depth in the 4 ft range in this marina. Nice helpful staff, although this is not a marina for too many 35' + boats, maybe 5 or 6. But if you want to get off the river, this is a good stop.

Nice Marina but Entrance Narrow, 2011-06-02
Captain: , Whitehall, Mi (1754)

Update: Stopped again during high water. No problems. Make sure you stay on the upstream side of the sign at the entrance. Helpful staff.

Water levels were medium low when we stopped and the entrance channel didn't leave a lot of room to spare. Also the turning basin is small.

Nice Facilities and Folks, 2010-09-29
Captain: , Cleveland (2029)

Lynette was VERY helpful in making room for 7 loopers who arrived pretty much at the same time. Very nice common area for happy hour! Breakfast in town: go to the Lunch Box - one block south of main st - just behind the VERY WELL inventoried hardware store. Pie was wonderful - get ice cream at the dollar store.

Close to town, groceries and resturants., 2010-09-27
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (778)

Deepest water on approach is north end of marina. Gas, no diesel service. Easy walk to Dollar General for groceries and plenty of resturants. Mexican Resturant 2 pictures of margarittas $10.00 Whoo Whoo! If in Central Illionis, have a Horseshoe for lunch! (Take with 2 lipitors and you'll be fine)

Good safe marina, 2010-09-07
Captain: , Memphis TN (977)

Good power, bathrooms, showers. Deep water. Close to small town. Friendly.

Nice little marina and town, 2009-03-27
Captain: , Key Largo (5304)

Don't let the entrance fool you, there is pleanty of water, and nice dockage, very protected, clean maria walkable to quaint town. Cheap good breakfast in town.

Nice, small, quiet marina, 2008-09-14
Captain: , Houston, Texas (3)

Bob (owner/harbormaster) is very friendly and helpful. Floating docks. All facilities are fairly new. Good showers/toilets. Pumpout.

Grocery store and laundry are a LONG walk - much easier if you have a bicycle. No taxi or car rental.
