Reviews for Sunset Boating Center and Dry Storage
FAST WiFi makes this a 3.5, 2017-05-26
Captain: , Campbell Creek, NC (454)

Marina is on a protected end of creek. More of a dry dock storage (boatel) facility with floating pier/slips.
Lightening fast WiFi. The Captain says they have some sophisticated equipment, not the run of the mill stuff from a big box store. It showed!!
24/7 Bathrooms are at end of the office building. Very clean, but didn't like there wasn't a locking door. These baths are close to the gate that is left open all night.
Showers/Bath and laundry are at the opposite end of the yard outside a gate that locks at 5pm. You can still get there by walking around the restaurant (Barking Dog). I just made sure I hit the shower by 4pm. Shower is meager, at best. No light over/by shower (its over the toilet) and odd multi plug extension cord to use an outlet from the toilet area around the doorway to the sanity/mirror area. I just dried by hair on the boat.
Only 2 patches of grass to walk the dog, but nice neighborhood with sidewalks start right by the main gate.

Hauled My Boat, 2017-01-18
Captain: , Smithfield (10)

Did excellent job on short notice hauling, power washing, and place on trailer my 22ft sailboat. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Convenient, shelterd, and economical!, 2016-05-21
Captain: , Colchester VT (380)

We chose to stop here because it would get us 2 hrs further along north and we wanted to find someplace sheltered from NE winds. Sunset isn't fancy but it was quite economical - at $1.20 per foot (with Active Captain) and $1 per night for electiricity. We spent an extra day there to wait for better conditions for going north up the Chesapeake. The staff is super friendly. We had three guys meet us to secure the boat. Lots of noise during the day moving boats in and around. (Fortunately, also, the barge across the channel was not being loaded that day!) The showers are a bit funky - you have to leave the grounds and go next door and up a flight of stairs. But they were pretty clean - not new however. Protection was great and there is NO current - docks are floating so tide is not a factor. All in all, I'd give them a thumbs up!

Warm welcome, 2015-04-27
Captain: , Newcastle upon Tyne (533)

We chose this one because there is no current and little wind. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and gave us some good recommendations for restaurants. The Taphouse on Queen st. was great. Only stayed one night, but regretted later in the wind on the Chesapeake. NOt sure about the wisdom of walking the neighborhood after dare, but fine in daylight.

active captain 3 days for price of two, 2015-04-15
Captain: , Chicago, Racine, Fish Creek,Wi (3163)

I was single handed so I asked for a hand docking. They sent three out to help. No problem docking by yourself with that kind of help. Very friendly staff in the office and the docks are floating with about 30-35 foot fingers. Barking dog at end of marina good for drink and sandwich. Showers clean & decent fuel prices. One negative is I washed my clothes and put them in dryer which did not work which left me with clean wet clothes :( bummer. The other boaters on the docks were very friendly.

Great Staff, 2015-03-22
Captain: , Fort Monroe (10)

I currently store a few boats at this Sunset Boating Center. The staff here is amazing. They are friendly and very knowlagble.

Convenient location, 2014-10-04
Captain: , Galesville, MD (1341)

Update 10/4/14 - Second visit here using the three nights for the price of two. Good value. Fast internet. We were not able to hail the dock during our approach using VHF 16, but did get prompt response by cell. Interesting to watch the tugs and local fishermen working on Sunset Creek.

Barking Dog is very casual with dressed up burgers, dogs and interesting beer list located at the end of the boat yard.

Convenient to downtown Hampton with a nice walk through a nice neighborhood and close to Food Lion and laundromat. There is a washer and dryer on premise. Patrick Hardware a find. Downtown ice cream store and Seafood Kitchen are treats. Very helpful staff. While its not fancy, it is very reasonable and comfortable option in Hampton. Easy access. We'll be back.

Kate Lawrence the new dockmaster, 2014-06-25
Captain: , Hampton, VA (44)

I am Kate Lawrence (former dockmaster of Hampton Public Piers) and your SSCA Hampton Host. Living Downtown Hampton makes it easy and fun to still be part of the boating community. I am very happy to be working with Liz and the gang as the new dockmaster of Sunset Boating Center. Happy boating and hope to see you soon.

A Great Value, not fancy, 2014-06-23
Captain: , Houston, Texas (970)

Liz called that a mistake had been made in my dockage rate and that I should have gotten the 3-for-2 rate. They refunded my card the amount I was overcharged. They are great people.

May 14, 2014
We spent two weeks here in a slip getting the boat ready for summer looping.
You will need a car to get to Walmart, Home Depot, West Marine, and Bass Pro. The old hardware store is just ok. Home Depot and Lowes are better.
Heads an showers are not fancy, but they were clean. Laundromat $1.50 wash and $1.50 to dry.
Active Captain listing is out of date. The 'get the third day free' was no longer available. Call ahead to confirm pricing.
There is probably less than 10 transient slips.
They consider themselves a boat storage facility, not a marina.
Staff was friendly and helpful.
The Barking Dog restaurant at the facility was cheap and good. Hot dogs and beer.
Overall a great value.

Correction, 2014-06-12
Captain: , Hampton, VA (66)

We do still offer the Active Captain Special of stay 2 nights and get third night free. After reading the review I looked into the oversight and we sincerely apologized and emailed our customer to offer him a refund for the overage. Here at Sunset Boating Center we strive for customer satisfaction and appreciate all of our customers!

Hidden gem, 2014-05-26
Captain: , Gulfport, MS (321)

Arrived on 5 May and ended up staying 9 days. At first glance, we were somewhat dismayed! Despite 30' floating docks (listed as finger piers), we were had expected to see some outboard posts to tie our stern to. However, this proved to be no problem for our 48.5' ketch (50' oal with dinghy overhang). We have a 13.5' beam and a 6' draft.

The scenery is not great, but because it is a working yard (dry storage) it is still very interesting. Plus, you would have to look long and hard to find a friendlier and more accomodating staff! Since we had to rent a car anyway to see all the local attractions (something you would have to do downtown also), we felt the marina met all our needs and then some. We will definitely make this our place to stay in Hampton in the future.

Good & Inexpensive, 2013-11-22
Captain: , Narragansett RI (234)

Pluses: VERY VERY VERY gracious and friendly staff. Good electronics repair and service on same location. Good access by walking to Hampton, and fairly priced dockage. $1.20/foot and $1.00/day for electricity. Good place to stop for an overnight. Kate Lawrence made sure she said hi to us and was more than gracious with her offeres of local knowlage, etc. Only flaw is inadequate shower facilities that are on the other side of a locked chain link fence at night (you can walk around the fence at the Barking Dog hot-dog place), but still... it's a bit of a hike from the boats. The showers were small, in an unheated (or poorly heated) room that is a partially finished room, and hot water lasted about three minutes. If you're happy with your own shower, use it and top off your tanks with fresh water after. Hopefully they will rennovate this area and that will amke things just right. Other than that we had a very good experience and would come back as "just a stopping spot" on the trek. You could not ask for nicer folks here, and that makes up for the showers.

Great staff, low price, 2013-07-22
Captain: , Apollo Beach, FL (928)

The previous reviews are right on. I had 2 or 3 staff helping with lines, even with no wind blowing. Everyone is friendly. Kate was on vacation, but Tootsie (dock master) gave excellent recommendations for things to do and where to eat. We didn't use it this time, but they told us about the Megabus to DC and other places. We attended Sunday services at St. John's church, a real historic landmark in Hampton. The marina facilities are old, but everything is kept very clean. Also, since it is at the end of the creek, trash from elsewhere tends to pile up in the water. I pulled out a couple plastic bags so they wouldn't foul any water intakes.

Lucky find, 2013-06-05
Captain: , Beaufort, NC (30)

We were planning to stop at the Hampton Public Docks, but luckily we called first. It is Blackbeard Festival weekend the per foot fee went up substantially. Sunset is $1.20/ft for Active Captain with a "pay for 2, get 3 nights" bonus and power for $1 per cord per day.

We are very glad that we were priced out of the Public Docks, because by looking at AC we found this place. It is perfectly protected at the end of a deep water creek. We had 3 people waiting on the dock to help us tie up, and when we went to the office Cindy called Kate Lawrence, the marketing manager and SSCA cruising station host, right away to let her know we were here. Within an hour, she came by and filled us in on all the local knowledge and has continued to be available to help all weekend. Fantastic. Dockmaster Tootsie got directions to the hardware store for us, and best of all told us about the taco truck. On Monday, Wed and Friday a food truck called Stuft comes around 11:30 with the best fish tacos we have ever had. It is an easy, pleasant, and safe 10 minute walk to the Air and Space Museum and town docks., So activities are close but back at the marina it is peaceful and quiet at night.

It is not a beautiful place, since there are high buildings for dry storage and fork lifts moving boats in and out until 4 in the afternoon. Showers and laundry are adequate--clean but in need of renovation. Kate says that will come and with her energy, it probably won't be too long. The on-site restaurant is supposed to open next week.
