Reviews for Sunbury Crab Company Restaurant and Marina
cool stop over - nice for a change, 2016-10-01
Captain: , Beaufort, SC (10)

Its not fancy but the staff, service and food is fine.

Cost is the problem, 2016-04-22
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (691)

We went here after finding Kilkenny Creek full in early April 2016. The trip up the Medway is not a problem, unless on an ebb current. The marina itself is not much, though tolerable. The town of Sunbury is a nice place to walk. The restaurant looks very interesting. The problem is the marina cost for a minimal facility. Paying $1.75 per foot for this is a problem. We would have tried the restaurant at perhaps $1.25 per foot. We never did find restrooms, though I think they are there.

We would not go back. It is too far, too minimal and mostly too expensive for such a facility.

This is a great little marina that is easy to get too about 7 miles up the Medway River. Elaine met us at the good wooden docks to help tie up. We ate at the Sunbury crab resaurant, rustic and busy with great service and food. I rate the marina facilities a 3 and restaurant a 5 for the 4 overall rating. Stayed one night March 31, 2016

Worth the 7 mile north west trip from the ICW. Deep water, Dock Master Elaine very friendly and accommodating, family operation. Good docks and excellent food. Will definitely return.

excellent food

Captain: , Charleston (40)

Stopped here for the night midway between Charleston heading south to Jacksonville. Exceptionally nice people, great food. Deep water, no problem with approach at all. Beautiful setting. Will be back for sure

nice stop, definite return, 2015-07-22

Plenty of water, very nice people and the food is fantastic! The views at sunset and sunrise are beautiful. We would definitely return!

great experience "Unforgettable", 2015-05-20
Captain: , Daytona Beach, FL (40)

Good stop northbound before Savannah. Came in at low tide and no issues with the depth on the way in. 8 miles off ICW. Basic marina but super nice people. Bought fresh shrimp, potatoes, and cold beer from them. Left early in the morning with the rising tide, through hell gate Easily and on tho he Savannah. Will stop again.

Stopped here in Jan on the way South. Good Restaraunt, nice people and reasonable Dockage....So, on the way North we decided to stop. Check to make sure services you need are available.

30 Dec 2014 Visit, 2015-01-01
Captain: , Colonial Beach, VA (640)

On recommendatioin from friends we stopped here for the night. Barny and Elaine own and run the place. Barny was off working and Elaine helped us tie up. She apoligized that restaurant was not open but opened the bar of the restaurant and served us drinks. Really laid back place. Not a lot of amenities but if you enjoy meeting really nice people in a unique and different environment this is worth a stop. Based on straight ratings this is probably a 3 star marina but we give it 4 because of the friendliness and fact they made us feel really at home -- they invited us to dinner in their home and up to watch a college football game.

Rustic Marina, 2014-03-16
Captain: , Deltaville, VA (602)

If you like Bobby's Fish Camp on the Tenn-Tom Waterway, You will love Sunbury Crab Company Marina. It is very rustic. Good floating docks with electricity but no water except for a 200 ft long hose from the fish cleaning station. No WIFI, no pumpout, no courtesy car, no laundry, no cable TV. There are restrooms in the restaurant which is quite a hike from the floating, transient long dock.
Elaine is a very outgoing and personable owner (along with her family). The marina is really a convenience for fishermen and the restaurant customers. The restaurant is a very rustic, southern, comfort food place. I had the shrimp basket which featured local caught shrimp and one side which was delicious as well as a generous portion for $14.
It is 6 miles off the ICW but there is plenty of deep water to get there if you follow your chartplotter or charts. Lots of tide and moderate current so tie on an extra line or two.
Marina gets 3 stars, Restaurant gets 4.
Worth an overnight stop, especially if you need to feed your fried seafood craving.

Very scenice, 2013-11-30
Captain: , Baltimore, MD (1100)

Sunbury Marina is apx 6 miles off the ICW up the Medway River. It's family owned and operated that offers dockage but no bath or laundry facilities. Very friendly folks that also own and run the restaurant. The area is very scenic which made the trip off the ICW worthwhile. You'll need to call them on arrival as they do not monitor the VHF.

Sunbury Crab, 2013-11-21

Very rustic-lots of character. River is poorly marked to the marina. 6 miles from the ICW.Good food- marina is rather basic. Good alternative to mega-marinas.

Geat marina, welcoming staff, good food. What more to ask for? Too far out of town but who needs cities.

Worth the Trip Over and Over again, 2013-06-28
Captain: , Savannah (40)

Excellent marina with little traffic. Best Marina Resturant in the Savannah area. Just went back for about the 5th time and the food gets better. If you get lucky you will see the shrimp offloaded from the shrimp boat and taken to the resturant where it is lightly breaded. Best anywhere!! If you are looking for a steak, the ribeye is hugh and well marblelized and tastes as good as any upscale steakhouse. The cheese fries appitizers is enough for 4 people! The drinks are well made and the band is excellent. The owner and his son play an excellent drum duet. Docking is easy and the run up the river is easy if you follow the directions from their website show below.

Great stop between St Marys and Savannah!, 2013-03-31
Captain: , Spring Lake, MI (379)

Don't let the short detour off the ICW keep you away. This is family run, and has a great bar and restaurant with fresh seafood caught daily by the family. It is a picturesque and quiet stop reflecting the rural south. The owners are hands on and most friendly. You will enjoy it.

Great place, great food, greatest people, 2013-02-21
Captain: , Charleston, SC (50)

We needed v-belt for our engine, were towed to the marina. It was St. Patty's day 2012. What a party! The crabs are the best I ever had (we are from Charleston). The owners of the marina make you feel at home, like family. They drove us 20 miles to an auto parts store for a new belt. He said "don't worry, we'll get ir fixed". They made us breakfast at home. The place is really old school marina and fantastic crab restaurant. Well worth the short distance up the river.

Great stopover off the ICW along the Georgia Coast!, 2012-12-06
Captain: , St. Simons Ilsland, GA (547)

Sunbury Crab Company and Marina is an easy day trip from Savannah and a convenient place to stop if you are traveling the ICW and looking for a peaceful and relaxing area.
We all know that people "make" any organization or business far more that the facilities. The Maley Family own, operate, and live at this little piece of heaven called Sunbury Crab Company. They could not be more accommodating and friendly.
The marina is very well maintained with an ample supply of inside or outside face docking. The restaurant is awesome, maybe one of the best you will find anywhere along the coast. Most of the seafood cooked in the restaurant is supplied by the family's own traps or local shrimp boats. The boiled shrimp were simply the best I've ever had anywhere!
The negatives are that the river channel is not clearly marked and this is only an issue below Jones Creek where the channel crosses from the west to east shore of the river. There are not dedicated restrooms for boaters but Elaine makes sure the restaurant's restrooms are left open for boaters. There is a private pool adjacent to the restaurant and Elaine said that boaters were always welcome. We were told that showers were available but we did not see them.
Overall, I would say that this is a "must" stopover off the ICW. It's sort of a Florida Keys eclectic kind of place where there live music, good food, and nice people.

What a Find!, 2012-11-27
Captain: , Fort Pierce Florida (300)

We were looking for a stop between Savannah and St Simons and decided to try this place partially based on the reviews here. I was a little dubious leaving the ICW for six miles, but when we arrived it was totally worth it. The setting in the salt marshes is spectacular. There is nothing fancy and the ammenities for boaters are minimal (no showers or laundry), but the restaurant and family are the best. The restauarant is more of a complex of rooms and levels including a place for live music. It has character and really does have a Key West / island vibe. A good term is eclectic. The family couldn't have been nicer. Although the restaurant was closed they opened for the two boats that were there. A couple of locals came by and we had an amazing dinner for the ten of us served around a big table. The fresh oysters and grilled grouper were amazing. It was so nice we stayed an extra day just to enjoy the spot even more. It may not suit everyones taste or needs, but we love it.

Most Fun Marina, 2012-11-14
Captain: , St. James, NC (253)

This is a great place to stop for a meal and an overnight. The family run operation provides great dock help and a very special restaurant. The boys catch fresh seafood and cook all the meals. Mom and Dad help to entertain guests and are really wonderful people. It is well worth the short ride up the river.

What a blast, 2012-11-01
Captain: , North Myrtle Beach, SC (3210)

Owner spent tons of time with us showing us around, etc. Worth the trip up river to see a neat piece of GA. While price is listed at $1.75, you may get a discount. Neat resturant. 4 stars is due to price.

Warm Hospitality With A Tropical Ambience, 2012-10-13
Captain: , Charleston SC (805)

Just 6.5 miles off the AICW at MM 620. Provides a safe haven and memorable dinning experience. A convenient overnight stop for the waterway traveller or a pleasant place to tarry awhile.
Family owned and operated restaurant open Wednesdays through Sunday.Varied menu, but dependant on season, the locally caught shrimp, fish, crabs and oysters are outstanding. All dishes are cooked to order and the menu moderately priced. Live music on occasion.
Floating docks are wide and stable supported by tall pilings. Water and power pedestals could allow for upto 12 boats dockside in the 40 FT. range
Diesel and ethanol free gasoline available. No pump out at this time.
This is much more than just another marina stop, the family Elaine, Barney and sons Joe and Clay offer a friendly, helpful welcome to fellow sailors.

Almost 5 stars, great ambience, 2012-05-14
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (6484)

Worth the side trip up Medway River, only two channel markers on the way up, follow the deep water on your chart. Great food at Sunbury Crab, Sunday night live music outside on the stage. Lots of locals on their lawn chairs gathered round. Elaine, the owner, came out to greet us after dinner with coutesy drinks and free coozies. Help with dock lines on the way in. Docks & marina nothing special, but enjoyed ourselves more here than at almost any other marina in the last 4,000 miles.

THE FRIENDLIEST MARINA, 2012-05-02
Captain: , East Falmouth, MA (1533)

We made a stop here because a friend said the food was good. We were dissappointed to find out the restaurant was closed on the night we stayed, but the owner, Elaine, met us at the dock, offered us a free beer and said she would open up just for us. Her son Clay runs the rest. and is also a crabber. He not only prepared a wonderful meal for us, he also gave me a demo on how to pick a blue claw crab in 30 seconds or less. The hospitality was outstanding and we will make this a must stop when travelling thru. There are 2 docks parrallel to the shore that are very secure and about 240' long. The current can be pretty swift so docking is tricky, but the parrallel ty up with lots of space makes it better. Getting to this place is not difficult, but only the entrance to the river is marked. Keep the "R2" to stbd and the "G1" to port and follow the deep water the rest of the way. The "G1" is shown as "G3" on the chart.

Great place., 2012-04-30
Captain: , Savannah Bend Marina (114)

Good food, nice docks, very clean and lots of friendly people. Easy 1/2 day trip from Savannah.

wonderful people, 2011-12-06
Captain: , Pawleys Island (114)

What a great place this is! Staff was friendly and a big help! Food was fabulous. Loved it and would return.

Savannah goes to Sunbury, 2011-11-14
Captain: , Savannah, GA (34)

Six boats from the Savannah Yacht Club cruised to Sunbury Crab Co. and Marina in November 2011. There were 5 sail and 1 power boat. Elaine, the owner, met us and made sure we had all we needed. The well protected marina has exceptionally tall steel pilings to keep the dock secure in just about any storm surge. The marina has fairly new wooden dock with 50 and 30 amp service, gas & diesel fuel.

Sunbury is an historic location more or less forgotten by time. It was an important seaport until the Brits trashed it during the Revolution. It now is small residential community with great water access.

The real reason it is worth the short trip off the ICW is for the food and fun. The restaurant serves a big variety of local seafood and is usually hopping with folks late into the evening. This is our second trip and we will return again and again.

Nice place, 2011-10-30
Captain: , Daytona Beach, FL (100)

The marina is about 7 mi away from ICW. If you are not in a hurry, you should come here and check it out. The restaurant has great food and the owners are very interesting people. No restrooms or showers on the site.

Good Old Fashion Hospitality, 2011-06-21
Captain: , Baddeck, Nova Scotia (160)

If your looking for modern amenities, if your in a hurry or uptight stay away. If your looking for attractive scenery, honest folk and a very good meal, put Sunbury Crab Company on your list. The seven miles up the Medway River is straightforward and well worth it if you like fresh seafood at working man prices.

Great Blue Crab, 2011-04-27
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

If you are looking for a neat adventure off the ICW and cherish great food, you must take the time to go to Sunbury Crab Co. It is a small marina, with no on shore restrooms. But what the facility lacks in services you would find in most marinas, it makes up in fabulous food. The owners meet you at the dock, and make sure you are comfortable. We stayed two nights and ate at the Sunbury Crab Co. restaurant right at the end of the pier both nights. Well worth the 1 hour trip up the Medway River from the ICW. I would give it a 5 star if they would just provide some on shore services. Marc Colby M/V Rock Chalk

Great Place, 2011-03-25
Captain: , Vinalhaven ME (65)

Well worth the 5 nm trip up the Medway River. Best stop between Isle of Hope and Saint Simon's. Very protected marina and fantastic restaurant. Fresh caught crabs, shrimp, oysters and fish. Great people and lots of local charm. Call by cell and Elaine will guide you up the rivre to an great seafood feast.

Love this Place, 2011-03-19
Captain: , Ft Stewart (74)

It is a great place to go after a hard day fishing. I wish there were more places like it along the rivers.

Too far off ICW, 2010-12-24
Captain: , Detroit, MI (160)

The marina is small but nice with clean modern heads. The only problem is that the marina is at least 7 miles off the ICW! A long way with heavy currents. Might be a great restaurant if going by car.

6 miles off the ICW, 2010-11-06
Captain: , Buffalo (1144)

We didn't eat at the restaurant, so can't comment. The marina is small and in good shape, but it is a long way from the ICW especially with a 2 1/2 knott current against us in the river. The river is deep and wide. We had a minimum of 17 feet near low tide. The wifi is stronger and faster than most. This would be a great place if it was closer to the ICW.

Great Restaurant, 2010-11-02
Captain: , Palm Beach Gardens, FL (1897)

10-31-2010. Well worth the detour off the ICW at least for us, but watch the channel as we touched on our way out.

We ate early at the restaurant and the food was great, the staff were very friendly.

Make sure you keep your bug spray close as the no-see-ums were hungry.

Not worth the side trip, 2010-10-15
Captain: , Chesapeake Bay MD (495)

After reading other reviews we were really looking forward to a great meal and a good gas stop while traveling the ICW. Meal took over two hours (at one point we were ready to leave without getting food) and stop was just OK. Thier was a wedding being planned on site so perhaps all the help was involved with that.
Moight be worth a second shot but..............

Great stop with friendly folks., 2010-05-26
Captain: , Warsaw, Ky (875)

Family operated facility that is well worth the 8 miles up the Medway River. Watch your charts and you will have plenty of water. Current runs along the face dock and the dock hands are very helpful. The restaurant is a definite stop when you are here. The fried oysters and crabs in a bucket are great. You have the feeling of being anchored out in a beautiful setting but will all the advantages of being (plugged in) at a marina.

Good marina and good food., 2010-05-10
Captain: , Palm Coast (792)

Make sure you have a chart (paper or electronic) to make your way up the river. When you get there the dock is first class. The attached restrauant serves great food at very reasonable prices overlooking a beautiful savannah.

A GREAT STOP!, 2010-04-04
Captain: , Lewes, DE (2517)

This family owned marina and restaurant is worth the 8 miles up the Medway River. The retaurant serves fresh seafood and has the outback Georgia flavor. The marina has tie alongside docking so the current is not a problem and the people are extremely friendly.

Great facility, family operation, 2010-02-28
Captain: , Sarasota (1427)

New floating docks. Was worth the detour, especially when compared to the "other" rickety marina in the area. Very nice, basic restaurant. Son of the owners goes out in the morning and traps crabs and then cooks them for dinner, Also very fresh fish. Lots of local tales at the bar in the evening. The dockmaster at Thunderbolt told us about the place. Wasn't in our current copy of the WWG.

Great restaurant, 2008-04-20
Captain: , Old Saybrook, CT (1021)

We enjoyed the detour up the Medway River to this new facility in front of the Sunbury Crab Company Restaurant. Very friendly and enthusiastic owners. We even found a couple of cups of coffee and a newspaper in a crab bucket beside the boat when we got up in the morning!
