Dinghy access

Yes - There's a dinghy dock at the state parks dock near the head of the harbor. Very steep ramp from the pier to shore but metal gratings have good traction. Many private docks on both sides of the harbor so make sure you get the right one.

Reviews for Stuart Island State Marine Park - Reid Harbor
Great spot, 2016-05-22
Captain: , Hailey, Idaho (50)

Depth at dock (i.e. the float attached to shore) is ~6.5-7' at a zero tide, so sailboaters might need to be off the dock during negative tides if they're deep drafted.

Lineal moorage rocks, 2013-08-10
Captain: , Albany (171)

We were traveling with 3 other small (22-25 ft) sailboats. We tied up to the lineal mooring, 2 boats on each side, cockpits facing each other, and it was great. We were able to sit in our own boats yet still talk to each other without yelling. Used a dinghy to pass tools and snacks from one boat to the other - push it toward the other boat then pull it back with the painter when done.

The only issue was the algae that rubbed off the bumpers and onto the keel/hull joint on my low freeboard boat, but that washed right off.

The ramp from the dinghy dock to shore is the steepest I've ever seen; I'd have gone with stairs myself. Ramp on Prevost Harbor side is less steep and has stairs.

Wonderful place right outside of Roche Harbor. There is really a County Road that goes all over the Ilsland. Visit the old School and especially the Cemetery. Please stay off of private property.

Reid Harbor, 2012-07-25
Captain: , Asheville, nc (40)

This was one of the places our family really enjoys. We have been there on two different trips and both times, there were empty moorings. We hiked over to Prevost and then the opposite way from the library. It's a short walk, fairly easy, with some nice views overlooking Reid Harbor.

Beautiful Location, 2012-07-08
Captain: , Port Angeles, WA (110)

Reid Harbor is one of our favorite stops for last night in the San Juans before heading back home to Port Angeles. Plenty of mooring balls, a linear moor, mooring floats for dock parties and a shore float to get ashore. Pump out barge is manual, but easy to use.

Stuart Island State park, 2011-02-11
Captain: , Anacortes, WA (312)

This is a nice place for smaller boats to tie up for a trip onto the island. The ramp to the island is steep and can be slippery when wet. The terrain on the island at this location is moderately steep. Composting toilets are available.

Just as good as Prevost, 2011-01-30
Captain: , Portland (374)

I actually like Ried better than Prevost, but only because it's easier and faster to sail into from Roche Harbor. The island blocks the setting sun for both harbors, but the dock at Reid gets sunshine longer. Both harbors handle many boats at anchor including big boys. The hike up and over the hill to turn point lighthouse is a little more work then I like, but I'll probably keep doing it. Give yourself three hours of daylight for round trip and hanging out at lighthouse or plan on walking back in the dark.

Nice place to stretch your legs, 2007-09-16

Beyond the trail to the school house, you can walk all the way out to Turn Pt. Lighthouse. Nice walk. Also, I'm glad that Wa St. Parks invested in the Clivus outhouses. They don't smell.

Good shore access, 2007-04-14
Captain: , Anacortes (83)

The marine park has some dock space which allows for access to shore. On shore there are campsites and a very nice walking trail through a wooded grove. There is trail which heads northwest from the docks and when you reach the road, you can travel north to the one-room school house. The school house library is sometimes open and displays some interesting photos and mementos. By the road at the school house there is a "treasure chest" selling objects to benefit the school.
