None of this is on the charts. However, the satellite view shows it correctly. Head for the large red hulled USCG cutter #83 to catch the red buoy at the very obsure entrance just to its south. The breakwater has a large green square and arrow on the port side of the entrance. Don't do this quickly as the turns are sharp. There is good depth.

Reviews for Straits State Harbor
Nicely maintained marina, 2017-08-02
Captain: , Portsmouth, NH (285)

We just used the fuel dock and pumpout but the marina was clearly in nice shape. They said it had been built in 2009. Staff was exceedingly helpful. The entrance as previously noted is tricky but just take it slow and you'll be fine. It can be rough in an east or northeast wind but once you are inside, it's calm.

Another very nice Michigan State Marina, 2017-07-30
Captain: , Corpus Christi (356)

As others have said - well maintained, clean, great restrooms/showers, 3 sets of washer/dryer, not busy, close to the town and restaurants, etc.
Mickeys Ice Cream is great but just order the single and share it!
Grocery store is a few blocks away with basics at elevated prices.
The town is very nice and clean, busy with tourists for the island. There is also a nice bike/walk path through town

Mackinaw Straits State Dock 070417, 2017-07-04
Captain: , Edison Boat Club Marina (809)

This is undoubtedly the nicest marina I have ever seen. Staff was top drawer, faclities all top rate. Diesel prices too high compared to surrounding area.

one of the best kept secrets of the area, 2016-08-07
Captain: , Pittsburgh (523)

Very clean, big, quiet marina. Whist the other marinas fill this one remains quiet in part due to not being promoted and not being easy to see how to access. A call to the marina confirmed the route in; aim for the ice breaker and then follow the red green sequence into the marina. Plenty of water.
Update 8/7/2016. The Internet service remains unavailable which is unfortunate. The Marina is still very quiet and clean etc.

Great, but wifi stinks!, 2016-08-06
Captain: , St. Joseph, MI (814)

I would give this Marina five stars if they got their internet working. The wifi in the boater's lounge works well, but on the docks it doesn't work at all.

This marina is underutilized because: (1) the charts don't show it accurately, (2) the entrance is hard to find and rather intimidating (a great concrete wall rises up before you as you enter the channel; you need to turn right just before you hit it).

There's a fair surge in the marina that sets the floating docks groaning and heaving. The surge comes in through the old ferry dock which needs to be sealed off from the marina.

Quiet and underutilized, 2016-07-07
Captain: , La Crosse, WI (941)

Very nice, clean and well protected. Staff are all friendly and helpful. Walking distance to town. Small grocery store a longer hike. Unfortunately the geese like this Marina too. The Michigan harbors book does not show the completed Marina. We used IPhone and Google Maps to figure out how to get in to the Marina.

Underused marina, 2015-09-18
Captain: , Catawba Island Ohio (530)

Very nice floating docks with 6x6 posts. Restrooms very nice but the showers are pushbutton with timers and no temperature control. $52 for 35' boat. Icebreaker tour and fort tour were both interesting. Other than that the town is mainly fudge and t-shirts. Good homecooking at Darrows, not on the main drag but ask for directions.

Good Marina and Interesting City, 2015-08-22
Captain: , Vandalia, Ohio (170)

We left our boat here for a couple of weeks the end of July. Shepler's Marine picked up the boat for some repairs and returned while we were gone. I can only say great things about Shepler's Marine. The Strait's was very nice, clean, safe and great staff. Just trust that you will eventually find the harbor entrance on approach. City is tourist stop, but we enjoyed.

Choose this one if in Macinaw City, 2015-08-17
Captain: , Fort Worth, TX (450)

This marina is prefered as the ferries do not dock here. The ferries do dock at the marina north of here. If you are here to visit Mackinac Island, stay at the marina on the island as it idealy located and you won't have to pay $25/person to ferry over. We enjoyed our stay here. Plenty of green space to walk the dog. Bill's Fish n Chips is fantastic. You will want to sample their smoke fish offerings and take plenty back to your boat along with fresh trout. Everything to see/do is walking distance.

the best place to stop for a transient, 2015-08-12
Captain: , South Portland, Maine (847)

came in in a houling wind, dock hands very helpful and competent. Would stay here again anytime. And a Starbucks is across the street!!! Not much for provisioning, did pick up our first resonable priced wine at Mickeys. Store across from the marina.

Very nice undiscovered marina, 2015-07-13
Captain: , Iuka, MS (1130)

Stayed 2 nights to visit Mackinac Island by ferry. Superb, new facilities, but almost empty at the end of June. Call the harbor master to get detailed instructions on entering--very skimpy on the ATONs (one red buoy only) and you only see a breakwater wall from out in the straits.

First Visit, 2014-12-27
Captain: , Milwaukee WI (939)

We kept hearing about this modern, up to date marina, but it was hard to locate on our charts and chartplotter. Once we spotted the ice breaker Mackinaw, it was easy to find the entrance next to it. The marina was nearly deserted in early September, in fact, the staff was just about to close the office at 5pm. We enjoyed the peace and quiet.
It was a short walk to restaurants, but the convenience store was very short on supplies and the IGA is a long hike away. For supplies, Dodd's on the Island can't be beat.
WIFI didn't reach to the boat, so we took advantage of it while doing laundry in the clean, well-maintained laundry room.
I recommend this marina for a stop over but not as a destination for an extended stay.

beautiful marina, 2014-09-07
Captain: , Naples, FL (1096)

Really well maintained. Three dockhands to help tie up. $52 for our 36 ft trawler. Poor wifi. We had to tie a line from our mid section to opposite dock to keep the boat from squashing the fenders.

Mackinaw City is a tourist town with 20 souvenir shops, 20 fudge and popcorn shops, 20 tshirt shops, and 10 restaurants. (Tongue in cheek).

Facilities are great but not sure destination warrants a repeat visit.

Nice Marina, 2014-08-24
Captain: , Green Cove Springs FL (1394)

We visited here for Dock Tails with some Great Loop Boats. Marina is very nice, all new and first class amenities. There are slits in the Concrete wall that let waves from High speed ferries come into the Marina., so it can get a little rolly We were very happy at Mackinaw City Marina and with our choice to stay there next door, as it is the home marina for AGLCA Harbor Host Mary and John Leatherman. Nothing like having your Harbor Host at
the begining of your dock on Pier C. Capt Helen & Chief Engr Bob Onboard ALLEZ! MT50. AGLCA, MTOA, USPS, WRCC, DFC

Well Kept, Like-New Marina, 2014-08-16
Captain: , Elk Rapids (130)

Visited for several hours today. We topped up on fuel and arranged a day dock so we could run into town.

The marina is spotless and is like new. It is also almost empty so we had no trouble getting a dock for the day.

$15 for a day dock won't break us, but most places are free where the local municipality runs the marina.

We didn't have trouble finding the marina entrance; we had read the previous poster's directions and found it easily!

UPDATE: 8/16/14
We stayed overnite 8/14 to 8/15. Marina is still top-notch. Staff is hard-working and eager to help.

Unfortunately they are a state run marina and the state policy forbids them from accepting tips which they deserve for their hustle and pleasantness.

Enjoyable stay , 2014-08-16
Captain: , Austin, TX (877)

Very clean marina, new docks and nice clubhouse, restrooms and laundry. About ten loopers used the marina clubhouse for docktails. Friendly and helpful staff. We took Star lines ferry to Mackinac Island. We bought the package of ferry, 1 hour 45 min carriage tour and tour of Fort Mackinac. We were happy with the package. We ate lunch at the Tea Room adjacent to the fort, good sandwiches, salad, pizza reasonably priced. Best place we ate in Mackinaw City was Audies, pricey but worth it. The owner drove us back to the marina. Ate at Pizza Palace at Machinaw City and Keyhole Bar. Both were good. Small IGA grocery.

FIVE STARS!, 2014-08-14
Captain: , Traverse City Michigan (174)

Friends told us about this marina. It was not on our Chartplotter (2012) or any other charts we had onboard. Found the Lat/Long on the internet. Head for the City Marina, then look left for the breakwall. The entrance to Straits State Harbor is hard to see untill you get close enough to the breakwall to see the Red/Green markers. Look for the windmills - that's where the entrance is. Great service very clean and much quietier than the City Marina, Too bad this marina is not used more. Maybe when the charts get upgraded and the marina is promoted more by the State of Michigan it will get more traffic. We prefer this marina with it's new floating docks over the fixed docks in the city marina.

Stay here! , 2014-08-09
Captain: , Massapequa,NY (1176)

Much better off staying here instead of the municipal marina. The docks are new, the marina is quiet & no ferry wakes. There are constant ferry wakes & ferry customers on the docks at muni marina

newer marina great town, 2014-08-03
Captain: , Palm Beach Gardens, FL (1997)

We spent three nights here, the water is very clear and the marina is pretty new.
From the T dock on B we were able to live stream via there wifi which was pretty good sometimes it was a little spotty.
The restrooms were very clean and the service was very good, one suggestion is to sweep the spider webs on the docks and pedestals each day would have been appreciated, the bugs were thick.
The town is fun to explore and the IGA supermarket is not too far of a walk.

Really like this marina!, 2014-07-20
Captain: , Montague, MI (200)

We have stayed here twice now and typically they have a lot of open slips and are very helpful to get you refueled and into your slip. Town is very close by and all facilities are new. There is some swell action from the ferries but certainly not bad. Highly recommend staying here!

Full service Michigan State Marina in Key location, 2014-07-01
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, Fl (6909)

We were the only boat in this marina which has everything a cruiser can want (except a decent Grocery Store). Everything is new and not even on the charts. Back in 06-30-2014 and same good docks however staff seems llacking motivation. Had to wander around the
office to find someone as all were i the back room doing whatever. That said two gals ran down the dock to help us come in but we needed need the halp so waved them off. There is some surge that makes into the harbor from the ferry boats but very tolerable. The Mighty Mac ice breaker Mackinaw is a worth while tour. An amazing ship. Priceing is in disarray with these michigan marinas as the state has gone to a tier, bracketed system which defies understanding. E.g. The Straits marina chargew the same as the Machinac Island marina????. No courtesy transprotatiion at the Straits. Still is a good stop with the City attractions.

Nice Harbor, overbuilt, underused, 2014-06-30
Captain: , LaSalle MI (597)

Beautiful facility that is greatly underused. Visited 9/4/2011 and had 4 boats in harbor. Have yet to see more than 10 on several visits.
Protection is great, bathhouse is too "green". Light are flashing on and off with movement, showers are not hot, technology run amuck.
Visited again last week, 96/25/2014) still empty, have spent millions on windmills and green things that nobody uses. Staff did not respond to radio or come out after we had docked, assumed they were closed. The City seems to be opting to forget the history of the area and sell everything in neon colors for under 10 bucks, not to mention the 60 foot hot dog atop the hot dog stand. That being said, nice IGA for provisioning not far, 6 blocks maybe, best smoke fish on the lakes(maybe tied with cross in charlevoix) right by harbor. Neath the birches is a hike, but good food. Audies is a long standing good choice for dinner. Been coming here since 64, still a beautiful area, hate to see it slipping towards tacky a bit. The entrance here must have been designed by a guy with a sense of humor or a drinking problem. Not hard, but tough to see any opposing traffic until last second.

Great place to stay, 2014-02-09
Captain: , Racine Wisconsin (10)

We have been here twice. This is the secret. Very new, within walking to downtown and the Mac ferries. Staff was nice and good fuel dock. Hard to find the entrance, go South of the Mackinaw ice breaker museum and turn at the arrow on the break wall. The museum has a good tour.

Docks are fine, but..., 2013-09-01
Captain: , Cheboygan (426)

Answered radio request for slip, but then dropped call. Staff on fuel dock didn't have radio. This is the 4th time have come in here and failure to have effective radio communication. First time gal didn't know how to use radio due to lack of training.
All showers handicapped plumbed with unlabeled buttons which you have to keep pushing to keep water running. In mens' showers no water temperature control noted. Bathrooms are new and clean. Nice marina office with areas to sit, watch TV. WiFi stronger than most marinas.

Under used, 2013-08-19
Captain: , Marathon,FL (90)

Great marina, but very hard to find the entrance. Come in 100 yds to left of Coast Guard cutter stern. Look for green painted square on concrete wall and red buoy. New floating docks. Great bathrooms and showers. Close walk to tourist district. Quick answer on radio. Just wish you could find a dock attendant when you were docking. No excuse! Never thought you had to request someone to be there to locate correct slip or help with lines. Some surge. No waves.

A secret gem in Makinaw City!!, 2013-07-01
Captain: , Commerce,MI (20)

We stayed here on 6-20-13 and 6-21-13. This place is amazing!! Super clean facitlity and nice floating docks. This is a DNR ran marina and the people that work there are SUPER nice. I spoke at length with them and they are hardly ever busy, which is really a shame, because this facility is great!! They have a lounge to sit in and watch tv and such, or just sit and relax. When we were there there was just four boats in the whole marina. Also next to the Icebreaker Mackinaw. We will be staying here again in the future!!

Almost deserted, 2013-06-23
Captain: , Sault Ste Marie, MI (240)

We stopped for two days and there was only one other boat in a slip. This harbor requires some searching on the DNR website, which lists it with two different names and does not show it as a reservable harbor on the reservable harbor list. Once you do find it, there is a link to reserve online. It is quiet and the views of Big Mac and Macknaw Island are great. The staff is eager to help and friendly, and everything is near new, clean and in great shape. You have to pay attention entering and keep the wind generators to your port, but there is plenty of water.

Convenient, well-constructed, underused, 2012-12-29
Captain: , Union Hall, VA (60)

Stayed at this marina for several days in Sept 2011. Less than 10 slips occupied, well over 100 vacant. Friendly, accommodating staff, clean facilities, well-constructed floating docks. Depth appeared to be 7-8' min at that time. Docks were cleaned of cobwebs every morning, onshore grilles/tables were sheltered and a pleasure to use.
Convenient to town, you can get most everywhere with a walk of 5-10 blocks.
The eco-conscious devices in the restrooms were a bit too ambitious (plan to press the knob on the shower valve about every 15 seconds, no kidding), only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars.

New Harbour, 2012-07-22
Captain: , Cincinnati (1810)

Everything is new in this marina. The water is very clear, WIFI is quick, and docks are in excellent condition. It is close enough to walk to town and other touristee attractions. Enjoyed our time there.

Five Star Marina, 2012-07-09
Captain: , Guntersville, AL (451)

All short comings of the previous review have been corrected. The staff was excellent. The grounds and docks were cleaned each morning to include cob, webs. This is the only marina I would consider in Mackinaw City.

Nice marina for Stop or Visit, 2011-09-30
Captain: , Mac Ray Harbor (120)

Clean and new docks, bathrooms, great walk into town - Wonderful view of the bridge. Great that it is gaining use. Need better "boat ready"staff. Most there over the 4th of July didn't know how to catch or tie off a line. Had a guy come down to assist us that was just out for a walk.... They need to pay closer attention to cleaning up the goose poop. Got to the point of being extremly annoying if you walked your dog at all... Had to find "clean areas" in the grass to do his business.

Unknown Gem, 2011-08-27
Captain: , East Dubuque, Il. (163)

Had to leave the boat for 10 days. Betsy and the staff kept an eye on it while we were gone with no troubles. Staff on site till 10pm. Clean, unoccupied marina close to the touristy area of Mackinaw City and the ferry docks to the island. Some surge from ferry's but nothing significant if you tie correctly. Will stay again if we're back in the area.

New and nice, 2011-08-14
Captain: , Murfreesboro, TN (360)

Everything was new and nice and the staff was friendly and helpful. There were bikes to borrow to ride to the Mackinaw Ice Breaker Museum. Very underused - maybe no one knows about this place, yet. Once word gets out, it will be busy. We appreciate places like this!

Very Nice Marina, 2011-08-12
Captain: , Wilsonville, AL (474)

Floating docks are new and well designed with large cleats. Employees are freindly and helpful. Short walk to town.

As good as it gets, 2011-07-22
Captain: , Mesa AZ (1609)

New marina still has the "new car" smell! Everything is first class. Downtown is 5 min walk. Fresh/smoked fish next door. Like a mini Mackinaw Island: T shirts & fudge.

Straits State Harbor, 2011-07-11
Captain: , Grand Haven, Mi (2283)

Great new marina, clean and very well kept grounds in a park like setting. We saw NO goose poop on the lawn. Many people flying kites on the lawn near the marina. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Mixed feelings, 2011-07-09
Captain: , Tawas, MI (30)

Plusses: Clean and new docks, bathrooms, grounds, love the recycling, nice views of bridge, Mackinac cutter, Appledore V
Minuses: Goose poop so thick on the grassy areas it is hard to walk, especially in dog run, which makes one wonder why they should pick up after the dog; dock hand would not leave the lines alone after told twice, "we're good, thanks for your help." A lot of water movement comes into the marina from the ferries so tie up well.

myboatfruition, 2011-04-01
Captain: , Hammond Bay (1841)

Great marina with friendly and helpful staff. New floating docks with gas, diesel, and pump-outs available. Clean showers and restrooms. Located right in the middle of Mackinaw City. Much nicer and easier to dock in than the Mackinaw City Marina next door.

New Straits State Marina, 2011-03-09
Captain: , Macataw, MI (435)

Wow, excellent 300+ boat facility with almost no guests when we visited July '10. Easy walk to dozens of good restaurants and shops. Tour the Icebreaker Mackinaw museum, absolutely excellent!

Great New Marina and No Wakes, 2010-09-01
Captain: , Newport, RI (10275)

We spent a night here and were very impressed by the docks, staff and facilities, which were all top notch. Unlike the city marina, there were absolutely no wakes.

The only issue is that Mackinaw City is VERY touristy and you end up willl lots of ticky-tacky shops and midocre food. Given that, it's a great transient marina.

Best Kept Secret, 2010-08-25
Captain: , Aquia Harbour, VA (1177)

New marina in 2009 in a park setting. Operated by the State. Nice wood floating docks. Many of the cruising guides do not list this marina so it is greatly under-utilized. Wide slips in a protected basin. Located near the city run municiple marina, which has old fixed docks. So glad that we didn't go there. Price is the same. Close to shopping.
