Reviews for The Boathouse Marina, LLC
Small but Friendly, 2016-10-13
Captain: , Pearl Harbor, HI (468)

Bill, the owner, met us at the dock and handled our lines. The staff and live-aboards are very friendly. Bill also loaned me his car to go to the Food Lion for groceries. We'll be back.

Wonderful Marina, 2016-09-18
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (110)

The owner, Bill Bowman, goes out of his way to make your stop a good experience. Plenty dock hands to help you tie up and leave. Bill provided a golf cart to get meals and provisions. The restaurants, notable Denisons and Shady Lawn are great. Nice air conditoned lounge. Free ice. Free laundry. Bill had marine supplies available but I needed a part that he ordered and arrived the next day. Colonial Beach is a very nice town with friendly people everywhere. Don't forget to get the ice crean at Denisions. Thank Bill!

Captain: , New Buffalo, Michigan (600)

Great stay, easy access following marked channel, plenty of water. Rustic docks and great people. Bill is upgrading the Marina. Golf cart community. Denisons market, which is also a restaurant, the best oysters anywhere. 2 of us are 30 of them. Will return here!!

A great place to stop, 2016-08-03
Captain: , Marblehead, OH (255)

We came in here because we had an alternator bearing seize up a few days ago. Potomac Alternator & Battery in Colonial, VA is one of the few places that still do rebuilds and is about a mile from the Marina. We were met at the dock by two of the local liveaboards who helped us tie up. Bill Bowman, the marina owner, drove us around town to show us the restaurants, shopping areas, etc and we dropped off the alternator for repair. Bill gave us the use of a golf cart for dining and shopping. The next day I picked up the rebuilt alternator from Dave at his shop. It looked like it just came out of the factory, just beautiful. Today, Jim Halsey cleaned the bottom of out boat and installed 4 new shaft zincs. We had a great conversation on his plans to take his woody 57%u2019 Chris Craft to the Bahamas this fall. Monday night we went to the Dockside restaurant for $2 hamburger night, last night to the Lighthouse restaurant for excellent Thai/French food, tonight back to the Dockside for Prime Rib night. Food Lion, NAPA, True Value and other stores are all together in town. Free laundry, nice boaters lounge, free ice, plus Bill can get anything else you need.

What a friendly place, we will be back.

What may be lacking in upscale facilities is more than made up for by the welcoming hospitality of this working marina. Owner, Bill Bowman is a boatsman's boatman with a passion for restoring wooden boats. He takes a persopnal interest in his transients and makes sure all your needs are addressed.

Very helpful place, 2016-05-28
Captain: , Bay St. Louis, MS (120)

Stopped here late on our way to DC 5/17/16 because of an upper helm broken shiftercable. Bill got someone on it in the morning. he didn't have the cable but has one on order for me and he will install it on our return trip from DC. while we were there we washed cloths, pumped out, and dropped off / picked back up at the food lion. This was a VERY helpful stop. Bill is in the process of redoing the docks. should be real nice when he is finished.
Stopped back on 5/26/16 and it was to late to get any work done but Bill got 2 guys on it first thing in the morning. Can't say enough about the service here. This is the place to stop if you need something for your boat.

A great mid-point stop on the way to D.C., 2016-05-28
Captain: , Hobe Sound, Florida (450)

Stopped here on the way down the Potomac from D.C. and wish we'd done so on the way up. If you're looking for a fancy resort, this is not it, but this marina and it's owner-operator, Bill Bowman, are the real deal. And when he's done with it, it still probably won't be a fancy resort, but it'll likely get five stars. Really, practically everything you need is here or nearby, and you'll not find better service and hospitality.

A great stop, 2015-10-19

We planned to leave our boat at the marina for a week while we went home, based on other reviews. It turned out to be the week that coincided with Hurricane Joaquin's possible arrival. We docked with owner Bill Bowman on the dock to take our lines along with several other helpers, and by the time we were checked in we had total confidence that Seadragon would be well looked after while we were gone, whatever the weather. Happily Joaquin headed out to sea; we returned and after trying out a couple of restaurants that Bill suggested (both great!) we departed for a planned week of anchoring out. Sadly, after 2 nights we had trouble with our inverter, so called Bill and arranged to return. He again met us at the dock and before the lines were all secured he had an electrician on his way - on a Sunday!! We ended up staying a few more days and thoroughly enjoyed Bill, his staff, and the very welcoming live-aboards. Not fancy but safe, secure and over the top helpful and friendly. Would definately come again. Colonial Beach itself was a fun little town with great walking, nice beach area.

Quiet Old Fashioned Marina, 2015-09-12
Captain: , Lottsburg, Va (264)

We stayed at Boathouse Marina the last weekend in August. Called late for a slip,4:00, and got a call back saying they could squeeze us in, provided directions that were easy to follow. Bill, the owner, met us at the dock as we came in and helped us tie up, then invited us for a glass of wine. Nice guy, long time boater. Nothing fancy about the facility but clean, friendly slip holders and onvenient. Bill loaned us his car so we might make dinner at a local resturant. Plenty of water, quiet place to stop. We will go back.

This was a pleasant surprise! We were met at the dock to help with our lines, the services are good and the people are great! There is a trolley that runs right past the marina and does an hour loop for $.50 each.

Great location, happy people, more food than you can eat, and a beach!, 2015-06-01
Captain: , Nowhere,OK (1314)

We did an Up the Potomac and Down the Potomac trip and stayed here both times.

I look for family run marina's and Bill's place is a great choice.

Fixed docks but an 18" tide swing isn't a big deal. Nice showers/restrooms. Not a fully stocked marine store, but that single item you want is in the hardware store about 1 mile away. Bill has a marina truck and a golf cart, so that's not a problem.

We were there for the Marina BBQ across Memorial day, very nice people. We ate at all the popular spots across the 5 days were there. This is the kind of place you can get into and get hooked and then it's 6 years later.

Highly recommended and we will be back!

What a little jewel in the rough, 2014-12-29
Captain: , Destin Florida (410)

We stayed here for for several weeks when we had to travel north. You cant beat the wonderful people here. Bill and Beth are just great! The price is right and even though the place is a bit rustic, we never had a better time staying here. We saw 6-7 feet coming in. Fixed docks. And you have to try Densons!

Best of the best. , 2014-11-06
Captain: , Jacksonville ,NC (20)

Not a fancy marina, but I put it top of my list for favorite marinas while in the Chesapeake this fall. Bill and crew are the most accommodating folks I had the pleasure of meeting. Had some engine work done there and it was done well at a fair price.
We liked the town, the Grocery Store restaurant is a hoot. Best fried oysters I have had anywhere.
Bill only a few transient slips, so you may want to call ahead.

The people are the best, 2014-10-15
Captain: , Louisiana (504)

The people make this marina/repair yard the best. Bill Bowman, owner, is a prince of a gentleman, who will bend over backwards to help you. Beth, the office manager, and Charlie, Yard foreman are super people who also go "above and beyond". All 3 of them stay on their boats during the week, so they are always available.
Bil bought this marina 18 months ago, and is still making improvements. The Captains Lounge is very nice, with cable TV, bath, showers. His boatyard is very much in demand & he has customers on a waiting list. He has a limited number of transient slips, but will work with you to accommodate you. He loves to repair/restore wooden boats, and is one of the best.
We kept our boat here twice during the summer for a month each time, while we attended to personal issues, and would highly recommend you give Bill a call for maintenance/repair or for transient dockage.

Warm, Clean and Friendly, 2014-08-22
Captain: , Quantico Marina (59)

Docking here was like pulling into a freindly small town. He and one of his guests helped us dock and introduced us to the facilities. Bill as a former cutomer and now owner of the marnia was very helpful with all aspects of our overnignt including volunteering the use of his truck to drive to dinner. We declined and had a lovely 10 block walk to a wonderful restaurant he recommended. Bathrooms were large and clean. And if you need a this or that for your boat you might just find it in his store. we plan to stay here each time we overnight in Colonial Beach.

Spent 5 nights here, 2014-08-18
Captain: , San Diego (300)

Bill the owner is great. A really knowledgeable old school boater. Will go out of his way to make sure your happy. $1.25 a foot per night.
Clean bathrooms, no laundry, fuel, or pumpout. Just a nice quiet place to say with some excellent views from the slips!

best of the best, 2014-07-25
Captain: , Redondo Beach, CA (260)

We bought a boat in Maryland and had some time to cruise the Potomac before shipping it home to California. It's my understanding that Bill just recently bought the marina and has been making some changes for the better. The docks are a little tired but we choose to say they had character. We are giving 5 stars because of the excellent staff including Bill himself who made us feel welcome to both his marina and his town. They loaned us a car for the evening so we could get to town for dinner and although we were only there for one night all of our needs were taken care of. This marina exemplifies what boating is all about.

What a Gem, 2014-07-11
Captain: , North Myrtle Beach, SC (3210)

Bill, the owner, welcomed us with open arms. Coming from SC, we have nver been here before on these waters, and he took us in and showed us the way, gave us many great tips of local knowledge, etc. Showers, etc are very good, and docking, etc was also easy. Courtesy car had no time restrictions (but might, of course, if the marina was busy but it was not when we were there). The currents in/out of the basin were not there for us, and we entered mid-tide. We asked Bill about it, and he said that the current is seldom, if ever an issue. His marina store is like a museum. Make sure you see it. Price is right too.

Boater Friendly - Boater Experienced, 2014-03-27
Captain: , Londontowne, MD (10)

I'm delayed in submitting this review from our 2 month stay late last Fall 2013 at The BoatHouse Marina, Colonial Beach, Va., but the fact that we want to come back this summer and spend time there says it all. Captain Bill Bowman was of great assistance last Fall when I arrived at his marina single-handing and flustered from a 100 mile sail plagued with auxiliary engine equipment problems jury rigged, and a fierce 26K head wind on the bow for 30+ miles. Only an experienced boater and captain like Bill could have offered such a calming dockside welcome at his marina, he's been-there-done-that. He and his dock crew assisted in tying me up and helping secure my boat. Water depth is great at the slips, 8+ feet, and exiting back to the Potomac is easy and deep. Cliff, the master tech at the marina is very skilled and quickly addressed all my equipment problems, which as any captain knows is what really puts a boater at ease. Almost instantly you feel at home at the BoatHouse Marina, and the immaculate Captain's Lounge and shower is just what is needed to shed the salty day at sea. Ms. Beth in the office and marine store is very helpful and efficient and answers all questions or finds the answer, quickly. Saturday night boater get-togethers around the bonfire are memorable. What more to say, we wanna go back again.

Home Sweet Home, 2013-11-05
Captain: , Colonial Beach, VA (110)

Bill Bowman, Sr. has reinvigorated the former Stanford Marine Railway in Colonial Beach. He is reinvigorating the marina scene as well with a full-service marina in the Potamac River community a short 60-odd miles downriver from Washington, D.C. Located on the west side of the Point on Monroe Bay, it is well worth a stopover. The town (and the river beaches) are a walkable distance, but he provides transportation as well.

Thank you Captain Bill Bowman, 2013-10-23
Captain: , Colonial beach, VA (10)

After a 72 mile drive to Colonial Beach for an anticipated great day of Striper fishing I realized prior to launching that I lost the plug to my boat. It was 0630 in the morning and the marina I was launching at did not open until 1000. After digging through everything I had with no luck, I noticed a car drive to then end of the pier and then turn around. I flagged the driver down in a last ditch effort to see if there would be any place else I could get a plug before 10 am. The man said "I can help you out, follow me to my shop, I will open it up for you".
This was the Boathouse Marina and Captain Bill Bowman was the person I was lucky enough to meet. We were out on the water within 20 mins and ended up catching our limit and having a great day thanks to Bill.

Awesome, awesome, awesome, 2013-10-08
Captain: , Kingston ON (20)

We met the owner at our dock (bill) and he welcomed us to the marina and his town. He gave us the keys to the car for provisions.

No issues with depths - minimum seen was 8.5'.

Docks are a little tired, but we spent $1/foot and will definitely be back!

Revitalized Marina, 2013-09-08
Captain: , Colonial Beach, VA (590)

Under new management of a boater, the marina is getting a facelift and has the "I will please my customers attitude" that makes it a great place to be. I am a permanent slip holder of the marina and would recommend it to any boater passing by or wanting a permanent slip. A Captain's lounge with bathrooms and showers is being completed. A nice deck with a large gas grill will soon be pleasing the slipholders. Piers are being worked. You will not find another owner who wants to please you more. Wifi works and a courtesy car is available. It will rate 5 stars when a bit more of the facelift is complete, but it is a solid 4.5 now. Very nice restaurants within 1-3 miles and the courtesy car can get you there.
