Reviews for St Marys Boat Services
Great do it yourself or not boat yard, 2017-04-12
Captain: , Kemah (130)

We stayed here over the winter and have nothing but good to say about Rocky and the staff. Got some work done on the boat by Rhonda and was very happy with the work. Also, since we have two pups, this was a great place for them too! They loved to snuff around and meet the various other canines there. Four stars only because it is not the cleanest and has only one bathroom.

Not to be Overlooked, 2017-02-08
Captain: , Brunswick, GA (301)

We took our 40-foot trawler IdleTheme to St. Mary's boat services on the recommendation of a fellow boater. We were not disappointed. It's a little out of the way on the North River, and not an Active Captain sponsor, but if your looking for a DIY boatyard or one with good subcontractors, SMBS shouldn't be overlooked. It's all about your boat.

I'm rating it a 5 as a boatyard, not a marina. It does have a single clean restroom and shower (bring your own TP), a single washer and dryer ($3.00 a load wash and dry) and a small as in galley size kitchen area with a microwave, hot plate and coffee maker -- again, guests are expected to keep it clean. It's out of the way -- a $10 Uber to the St. Mary's waterfront and just less than $15 to the Publix and a small shopping center.

We arrived a couple days earlier than scheduled for bottom painting, on a weekend, just before an impending storm. Rocky and his crew worked with us to get us out of the water before the storm hit and taking care of other boats. We stayed on our boat and Rocky made sure we had everything we needed. He lives on the property and is readily accessible as is the office manager Terri. Reasonable rates with no extra charge for staying on the boat.

Rhonda LaForte and crew gave IdleTheme a new bottom. Can't say enough good things about them. First thing Monday morning Rhonda had four people sandoing our hull down to the barrier coat. We'd hoped to be out ASAP and she made every effort to expedite our job. We had quite a few blisters, some of which had been less-thann-adeuately repaired by previous owner. Rhonda and crew fixed them right, still keeping to schedule. Price was reasonable for the amount of work done plus the knowledge I gained. We had two coats of bottom paint applied (plus a barrier coat) red over blue. When the red coat did not cover as well as she liked, Rhonda put on a second coat at no cost -- not because I was dissatisfied, but because she "couldn't let it leave the yard that way." A contractor who takes personal pride in her work is the best.

Ronnie Anderson is a woodworking specialist right out of central casting. He repaired damage to Idletheme's rubrail. When he saw a table I was working on, he milled some teak trim for me at a price I don't think I could have purchased it for -- if I could find it. Again, extra effort that you don't always find in a busy yard.

Bottom line -- SMBS is all about your boat. If you don't need to be pampered, but you want your boat pampered, I highly recommend it.

Rare Find for DIY, 2017-01-25
Captain: , Rapid City, SD (100)

Awesome boatyard for DIY, but lots of support or services if you prefer. Very helpful, laid back owner & staff. Other boaters were friendly & helpful. Great for storage & great hurricane hole. Plans for additional shower house & wifi coverage. Would definitely return if haul out is needed. Rocky is the owner,
but Captain Cupcake (Clayton-3) runs the yard.

Excellent Boatyard, 2016-11-14
Captain: , St. Simons Island, Georgia (10)

We had our 60 ft cruiser pulled out for bottom paint and cleat repair the week before Hurrican Matthew hit the Georgia coast. Although they were very busy with boats damaged from Tropical Storm Hermine, they honored the appointment that we had made with them late Summer. They are very good at prioritizing work and, if it wasn't for delays caused by the hurricane, they would have met their projected timelime. Rhonda and her crew did an outstanding job in completing our projects - buffing/waxing the hull, fiberglass/cleat repair, blister repair and bottom painting.
Due to the onset of Hurricane Mathew, they allowed us to keep the boat in the yard for the duration of the storm. The boatyard is kept very clean and Rocky, Jeff and Rhonda provide excellent communication and customer service. We couldn't have been happier with the reasonable pricing and quality of service that we received at St. Marys Boat Services.

Friendly, Helpful, and Supportive, 2016-06-15
Captain: , Keyesport, IL (170)

Hauled out so that we could repair our rudder. Everyone was helpful including all the staff and the other boaters. Took the time to touch up bottom paint, add a throughhull, and polish the topsides. Jeff and Rocky helped us with getting supplies, providing stairs, putting us in a shaded spot in the yard, providing a loaner car, and Jeff makes fabulous BBQ sauces for his annual Memorial Day BBQ party.

Best Boat Yard for the do it yourself boater, 2016-06-15
Captain: , Amelia Island, FL (80)

Friendly boat yard with woodworking and machine shop, tools, and tech help. All can be used by the boater. Just cleanup after yourself. A rare jewel in the boaters world.

Love this yard. Friendly and helpful people, 2016-05-29
Captain: , Annapolis (550)

Just spent three weeks here to do a bottom job and a few other projects. Did all the work ourselves, but Rocky and Jeff were very helpful when needed. Other boaters, some working on long-term projects, were also helpful.

This yard just seems to have good karma. Look forward to coming back.

Exellent services, 2016-05-08
Captain: , St Marys GA (30)

We hauled our 44 ft sailboat to have the bottom pained before embarkng up the intracosal. The staff was exceptional. They provided a forklift with a platform to raise our provisions from our car to the boat so we would not have to go up and down the ladder. They also provided a refrigerator/freezer for us to keep our frozen food until we embarked. The only downside is that there is only one bathroom and shower for all the boaters.

Excellent boatyard, 2015-11-20
Captain: , Galena, MD (1856)

We hauled out in May and left boat til November. This is a family run business and Rocky lives on site. Our boat was looked after well.
We had some work to be done and were pleased with all of it.
Had prop removed for repair and checking. Was off the boat and on the way to the prop shop while we were still in the slings.
Had the keel repaired, bottom sanded and blister repair completed by Rhonda. She sent pictures to me at every step. Also had bottom paint completed and was excellent job.
During visit in August found starter on main engine was bad. Had local diesel mechanic, Jack Dickey, repair while we were back in MD. He removed the starter and brought to a local repair shop for rebuild, $150, a lot less than a new starter from Volvo. While he was checking the engine after installing the starter, found our alternator was cracked. Sent pictures so i could evaluate. I had a spare on board so he changed it out. Work was completed professionally and at a fair price.
If you are looking for a boatyard where you can work on you boat or hire local professionals, want a comfortable atmosphere where you feel safe, this is it. You will feel welcome and Rocky and Jeff will do whatever they can to help you. Terri in their billing department is a pleasure to work with.
Only complaints are that the water is well water with a sulpher smell, that is typical in northern FL and southern GA. And there is only one shower, so at the end of a work day the line forms. That's not all bad either, as you get to meet the others in the yard working on their boats.
All things considered i would recommend this yard to my friends without hesitation.

Be Very Careful before trusting this boatyard, 2015-08-13
Captain: , Durham, NC (10)

In regards to the previous review, What a BUNCH OF FLUFF!!!! Evidently that was written by one of the workers, or their friends. But one thing is true in that review. There are some very nice people at St Mary's Boat Services. They will smile and try to make nice with you while apologizing for the screw ups of the contractors. But they won't do anything about it. Just shrug and move on. Jeff and Rocky are really nice people. But they hold very low standards when they decide who can pan for boating gold amoungst their haul out clients. Be careful in this boatyard.

Best kept secret for DIY'ers! Best Boat yard we have been to yet!, 2015-08-11
Captain: , Muskegon (16)

Most people think of a boat yard as the repair/storage side of a Marina, Not here, This IS a Boatyard not a Marina. When you need to get things ship shape, you come here. When you are looking for a place to party on your boat, Go to a Marina. I am not saying that they are not friendly, they are... They are a well functioning group of contractors as well as fellow boat owners who thrive to be the best at maintaining, repairing, and complete rebuilding of any boat. They do it with a smile as they enjoy what they do. I have been to the Big Marinas who claim to be "specialists" and the only thing they specialize in is removal of your wallet. We had a "specialist" marina go through our entire boat and tell us everything was ship shape after thousands of dollars of repairs we had them perform for us to be ready to make the big loop journey. What they didn't tell us was we had the wrong setup for salt water, we had a cored deck that had major issues, we had a rudder full of water, and much more. Luckily we decided to bring our boat to Saint Marys and have it hauled to deal with a small issue before going back in. This is where we found we had the wrong bottom paint. We decided to have everything removed on the bottom down to gelcoat. Best decision ever. This is when we met one of the local contractors, Bob Guthrie. He said he would come take a look (no charge) He was able to give us a plan of action that has saved our boat. He knew we were on a budget so he was fair by only charging us for the time it took him to show us what to do next. We did almost all of the work ourselves which has saved us from having to get rid of the boat and give up our dream. The yard guy, Jeff is always running around moving things for other boaters and making sure everyone has what they need including a ride to the store. He can sometimes be a little gruff but once you get to know him, you find that he is just a big teddy bear who loves his job and wants to make sure that things are running smoothly. He is a super nice guy who will even watch your dog if you have to go somewhere for the night. The owner, Rocky is on top of it all making sure that all services from multiple contractors are coordinated. He is there 24/7 and he will make sure that your needs are met. Often you will find Rocky on the Crane or the travelift doing all the heavy lifting with such finesse that you will never want to have any other place lift your boat. We have our dog with us as so do many other boaters. This is definately a pet friendly yard. If you have a catermaran and need work done, They can definately do it. I was talking to a "cat" owner last week and they said they had 2 choices, either Savannah,Ga or Fort Lauderdale with both locations being quite expensive... They said they are going to tell other "cat" owners as they cruise about this "secret BoatYard" where they too can experience the friendly and experienced crew at Saint Marys Boat Services. Rocky and his crew are the Best!

Simply the best - hands down, 2015-04-17
Captain: , New Zealand (10)

This is the best yard we have been too by far. They have two lifts and can cope with most yachts and motorboats and also Catamarans. They can organise work to be done BUT you can do your own if you want and there is no pressure. The rates were second to none! Rhonda and TJ do glass work and painting and we were thrilled with the work and cannot be more pleased to have made a lifelong friend with Rhonda.

We had major problems with blisters and de lamination and we were very concerned but nothing is too hard for this yard. Just ask Jeff - he is the yard manager and worth his weight in gold. He is the bright spot when you having a bad day and he gives great hugs when you're feeling down.

The only catch to this yard is access - we draw 6.5' and we had to work the tides a lot! Access to the lift is behind a little island and if you don't have a bow thruster it is difficult but certainly not impossible. Just work the tides if you draw a bit more.

Best Best Best. Thank you to Rocky and his wonderful crew - Terry, Jeff, Rhonda, TJ, Bob and Kevin. what a great yard.

Excellent DIY Yard with services available, 2014-08-03
Captain: , Oriental (170)

Excellent yard for DIY boaters. In addition professional help is available. Rocky Smith the owner will bend over backwards to accomidate your needs and his staff is both helpful and knowledgable. Bob Guthrie has extensive experience in mechanical as well as electrical and is very helpful...

Helpful folks;, 2014-03-18
Captain: , Knoxville, TN (30)

Good yard, good people. especially Rocky, the owner. The dock is exposed to N winds that blow water out of the river and we sat in the mud during the full moon. Terri called a pump out truck for us, and while there is some diesel, they don't sell a lot of it. Everyone is helpful. Rhonda did a great job on the boat exterior, and Bob Guthrie did excellent work on our engine. Another cruiser in the yard helped with an electrical issue and yet another cruiser working on a boat in the yard gave us rides to get medicines and groceries. There is an inexpensive motel nearby that gives discounts for weekly and monthly guests. Enterprise rentals will deliver a car to the yard.

Great DIY yard, 2013-12-14
Captain: , Somewhere, UK (10)

Prices very reasonable, atmosphere very friendly and overall good place to do your own work on your boat. Manager (Rocky) and staff are extremely helpful and very easy to work with. Kept a boat here for 3.5 years (worked on it for 2).

Friendly haul-out and services at reasonable prices, 2013-08-01
Captain: , Auckland, New Zealand (20)

We hauled our launch out here in November 2010 and due to business commitments in NZ, have only just returned to tidy her up and we are now travelling north on the ICW. We spent five weeks working with the St Mary's team, including Bob Guthrie, engineer; Rhonda and her team who did an outstanding job cutting and polishing the exterior; and Rocky, Terri and Jeff were outstanding in making us feel welcome. Prices were incredibly reasonable and nothing is too much trouble to this team. Highly recommended.

Great DIY yard, 2012-09-21
Captain: , Brunswick, GA (63)

I had my boat hauled from Lake Lanier ga to St Mary's and had her commisioned and splashed here. Rocky's very friendly and helpful with everything. I'll have Brianne hauled here when I need to work on her. Lot's of other help in the yard as well for fiberglass repair and such.

St. Marys Boatyard, 2012-08-22
Captain: , Newport, RI (81)

It is the most popular yard in the area with very nice people operating it. The services are reasonably priced and the service is excellent and a good value.

Tropical Storm Beryl, 2012-05-30
Captain: , Crested Butte CO (30)

I hauled my IP40 May 23 2012 five days before Beryl hit this area with 65 mph winds. This yard suffered no damage! It's particular location is very safe and the yard's owner Rocky Smith and his crew are terrific.

Good place, excellent work, long term work or storage, 2012-03-15
Captain: , Stuart, Florida (203)

I had my boat here for TWO years. They do excellent work. Mabel can do fiberglass so it looks like new. They know welders, canvas people, electricians, that can do work for you, or you can do it yourself. They watch over your boat. Many people return year after year to haul their boat here. It can get crowded as it is very popular.

St. Mary's Boatyard, 2011-11-09
Captain: , Jekyll Island Ga (482)

Our sailboat was there for a refit and bottom survey. Rocky Smith and Phil Jones did a fine job. I am well pleased with the service, repairs and the communication during the work. Rocky and Phil did 110% of what we expected. It was a real pleasure to work with professionals in caring for our vessel. Kanza IP27

Captain: , Point Marina, Whortonsville, NC (506)

Had the boat hauled here for some work last month. So far, a very good experience. Will update when work is finished.
Yard has changed hands since first review. Rocky Smith is now yard manager and is very good at it. Mabel Smith is still here doing excellent fiberglass repair.
Update 07/06/2011 - Excellent DYI boatyard. My very best boatyard experience to date!

St. Mary's Boat Services - A+ from us., 2011-01-29
Captain: , Placida, FL (276)

Hauled out here yesterday (1-28-11) on recommendation of several cruisers. Great experience so far - Two travelifts - Lots of care shown when prepping and hauling. Nice people, reasonable rates and diy work allowed too. We're going to stay for a while I think. Much better atmosphere (and reputation) than BLM yard.

Excellent DIY boatyard, 2010-03-22

An excellent small DIY boat yard. Very reasonable costs for short- or longer-term storage; helpful staff. See Mabel for expert fiberglass and gelcoat repairs.

St Marys Boat Services, 2008-07-09
Captain: , Louisville, KY (25)

This is a small but efficient boatyard that offers boat storage, and/or a land base to have your boat worked on, or to do work on your boat yourself. It's travel lift can handle boats up to 30000 pounds and up to about 45 feet in length. In addition it has a rail system bor hauling boats out of the water for short time work (up to about a week, as only one boat can be hauled at a time). It must be approached at or near high tide, but at that time the river can handle boats of at least 6 feet in depth. Yard manager Roger Waskett is an ex-cruiser, so he knows the needs of cruising sailors
