Reviews for Sportsman's Inn and Marina
Great Stop, 2016-09-14
Captain: , Grand Rivers, Ky (1522)

8-4,5-16 This was a great stop for us, the staff was very helpful and went out of thier way to assist with anything we needed. Water was not available at our dock, we had to run our hose from the bathhouse building. We had a great meal at Henry's and really enjoyed the meal and entertainment at the lodge, just a block or so from the marina.

First class experience, 2016-08-23
Captain: , North East, MD (316)

Our stay in August 2016 was first-class. We stayed two nights because to avoid gale force winds on the Georgian Bay. Several dining options on premises, including fine dining, which we enjoyed. Staff including dockhands were all professional and competent. (Don't go to Herbert's fish fry down the street. It is overpriced and the fish was overcooked, dry, and tasteless.)

Great Help at the Dock, 2016-07-21
Captain: , N. Myrtle Beach (343)

Our thanks to the staff of Sportsman's Inn & Marina for the help as we towed in a disabled 40 ft trawler. They were most helpful in clearing their fuel dock so that we could bring the disabled vessel along side. They had five knowledgeable dock hands at the ready as we pulled up.

We stayed the night with them and were pleased with all the attention and service. The docks on the east side are all new and they have begun rebuilding the docks on the west side. They have a pontoon boat to move you back and forth across the inlet and they respond in minutes of being contacted.

Would give them five stars but the wifi doesn't reach across to the side where the larger boats are docked. Good restaurants in walking distance and good water depth at all the docks as we draw 5 feet

Fantastic Stop, 2015-10-20
Captain: , Rockford, IL (614)

Fuel and dock staff were not only friendly and helpful but knowledgeable too. Facilities were first rate. We walked down to the Fish and Chips place (we're told it used to be a bus, but now is brick and mortar) and had a splendid meal. We even got to see a sea plane taxi by.

Great Stop after crossing the Georgian Bay, 2015-08-30
Captain: , Baltimore (40)

The Sportsman Inn & Marina is a first class facility. We stayed here one night after completing our crossing of the Georgian Bay in late August 2015.

The staff was friendly and very helpful. The individual bathrooms were GREAT - clean and fully functional. There is a restaurant in the Inn, but we didn't eat there. We opted for the famous fish & chips shop - Herbert's - down the street. IT WAS TOTALLY AWFUL!!! We waited for over an hour to get our order which was overdone and tough! Never again!

Other than the issue above, Killarney is a beautiful little town with a couple of restaurants; a couple of shops; and two first class marinas. A great place for an overnight.

Good stop but frequently quite busy, 2015-08-23
Captain: , Wicomico Church (600)

Not outstanding but a good stop.. Restaurant was excellent

Great Staff, 2015-08-22
Captain: , Southport, NC (637)

The Dock staff could not have been more friendly and helpful.

Great service, 2015-08-17
Captain: , Fort Worth, TX (450)

The marina is on both sides of the channel. Most larger boats are docked on the south (island). To get to mainland you ring the bell or hail "Tinkerbell" on marine radio to pick you up. "Tinkerbell" is a pontoon boat that is manned up until approx 11:00 p.m. All dockhands were so helpful/friendly/professional. Docks were old wood boards, water was not potable on south (island) side but you can fill up your fresh water with potable water at the fuel dock on the mainland side. Boat-In Theatre was broken. Location was good. Harbor and channel is very busy so be prepared to idle for 30 minutes while dock hands synchronize all the comings and goings of boats.

Nice enough place, 2015-08-10
Captain: , Atlanta (770)

We stayed here the night of 8/15/15 on the island side. Were supposedly bathroom facilities there, but we couldn't find them (no shower facilities on island). WiFi was weak on island side. We liked the town of Killarney, but not much there. Overall, the marina was good, but nothing to rant positively or negatively about.

Reality check., 2015-07-18
Captain: , Windsor (270)

If you try to get to Killarney by auto, it is a long trip down from Sudbury thru endless bushland.Canada is the second largest country in the world and has one tenth the US population. Given that the boating season is three months long this far north I am suprised by the comments from the some 'silver spoons' that the WiFi was weak and groceries were costly. If that is your thing go boating in the Hamptons! This is a great staging area before heading to the north channel. I hope it never changes.

Very well maintained., 2015-06-28
Captain: , Sandusky, OH (48)

The Sportsman Inn property has been very well maintained and improved. We stayed on the main pier on the north side and had access to water and good internet. The young staff are always running the docks and do a nice job. The pub was good with entertainment on the Saturday we visited.

Hints to make an easy stop, 2015-01-22
Captain: , Milwaukee WI (547)

You can dock for free for 30 minutes at the LCBO dock (or as long as you wish before 10am). There is also a public dock next to the Fisherie but will only accomodate smaller boats.

You can pay the day rate of $10/hr and just stay long enough to get supplies or do laundry.

Grocery store is pricey for staples but the meat and poultry is comparable to home and is very good quality. The bakery at the Gateway Restaurant is also terrific for bread, muffins and sticky buns. We liked the pizza at Pine Inn.

We needed medical assistance from the health clinic... very efficient with a minor issue. But they had to guess what to charge an American for services rendered!

I see comments re: water issues, but we had none in numerous stops there in 2013 and 2014. We were told in 2013 that they were treating water to make it available on the Island side, so hopefully it is a temporary issue.

Hot Showers! , 2014-08-31
Captain: , Grand Haven, Michigan (200)

We came in from real crappy weather! Picked this place on account of the shower reviews and man they were right! Nice cedar paneled personal bathrooms with hair dryers & nice clean showers.

The dock rate is not cheap I think 2/ft no water to docks, but there is at the fuel dock. Restaurant on site is good, store down the street has what you might need for a million dollars, really crappy produce! Fish and chips place doesn't seem to deserve the hype it gets?

Nice Visit, 2014-08-09
Captain: , Green Cove Springs FL (1380)

Stayed two days 8-2-14 & 8-3-14 Alll amenities reached via Pontoon Boat from South Docks which had VERY narron Fingers about 12" off the water and felt very unstable to walk on to and from boat. No Wi-Fi Signal on south docks ahad to go to Lodge on other side and sit in the PUB . Not much there but the Marina. It is just a stop after crossing Northern North Georgian Bay. Herbert's Fish & Chips real good but the bus he worked out of is gone. He is working out of a portable kitchen until his restaruant building is finished. Short handed on dock staff but those that were there were friendly and compentent. Capt Hellen & Chief Engr Bob onboard ALLEZ!

Good marina, 2014-08-01
Captain: , Massapequa,NY (986)

Nice floating docks with helpful & friendly staff. Restaurant & pub right on site. Short walk to everything in town. Gets busy in afternoons. Bit of a pain not having water on the dock.

Good Marina and Staff, 2014-07-30
Captain: , Tarpon Springs (983)

Although before noon, the channel was a zoo with boats of all sizes milling around. In very trying and demanding circumstances, the staff at Sportsmans politely sorted everyone out and got them fueled and docked. On the mainland side you can get water but have to join hoses from the office or restaurant wall if not from the fuel dock. The fish and chips, and the ice cream are good, as per previous reviews.

Good place for a rest break, 2014-07-29
Captain: , Nowhere,OK (1314)

We were on the George Island side and it's OK. Not having drinkable water at the dock is a pain.

On the plus side the dock hands are super amazing! And we really had fun riding "Tinker Bell" back and forth across the channel. Showers at the main building are very nice, triple wide doors to get in and lots of hot water.

If you are on Georges island, go bow in so you can watch the movie on the giant screen.

Make sure you get the fish at Herbert's Fish! Butter tarts at the bakery next door to Sportsman's is very good.

After lunch at Herbert's walk one block to the Killarney Museum. Lots of info about the town (194 years old). They have an Edison wax cylinder player that you can actually get close to.

Great dock staff, good location, 2014-07-28
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (6425)

Booking a slip on a busy weekend was difficult, could not get confirmation from dock office, but staff on dock (vhf 68) found room right away. Good location between North Channel and northern Georgian Bay. Newer docks on mainland side, old docks in poor conditon on island side (but cheaper rate) Free shuttle between island and mainland running all day into the late night. Several close by restaurants. Expensive grocery so not the best place to reprovision.

Sportsman's Inn & Marina, 2014-07-15
Captain: , Bronte Outer Harbour, Oakville, Ontario (137)

Ended up on the south side of the channel - George Island and at first was disappointed to be here but the complimentary water taxi was always available and there in minutes to take you back and forth as many times as you wanted. The staff were very accommodating and would take care of anything that you needed - catch lines, hook up power, take garbage, you name it. They even put on a fun movie at their drive in theatre. Just had to tune in your FM radio to hear it. Showers & washrooms were on the main shore and were in excellent condition. Watched the World Cup final in their sports bar and it was a lot of fun. Service here was also great.

A nice stop in the wilderness, 2013-08-15
Captain: , Portage Indiana (503)

Stayed 8-5-2013 Great staff and facilities. Loved the cedar lined individual restroom/shower facities. Nice laundry facilities. The live music on the porch can be a little loud/overwhelming when you been out in the wilderness for the last week!

One drawback is they have limited water fill. On the town side it's at the fuel dock and another fill is a hose on the front of the building they can stretch to the docks to fill if needed. In otherwords if your coming in with empty tanks it might be a good idea to stop at the fuel dock first because there is no hookup at the docks.

Killarney, ON, 2013-08-15
Captain: , Jupiter, FL (506)

The docks on the island side of Killarney are a bit rough. We found that the water smelled of chlorine and had to flush the water tanks through twice after we left. Nice town but EXPENSIVE, but then it's Canada. We enjoyed the "boat-In" theater. Very neat! The taxi service across to town was quick and efficient.

Loved it! Great staff!, 2013-07-23
Captain: , Midland (322)

Stayed here 2 nights July 2013 with the Parkbridge Rendezvous. Great staff were always willing to help and provide directions. Showers were clean, pub and restaurant were good. Would definitely come back.

a wonderful stop, 2013-07-12
Captain: , Longboat Key, FL (445)

A great stop in Georgian bay. $2 per foot so pricey but great amenities and food. Laundry, 30 and 50 amp power, water onshore with long hose to fill tank, not on dock. Fenders about 1 foot above water. Food great and reasonable. Pub with entertainment. Energetic dock hands. Clean restrooms. Make sure you are on Town Side. Less expensive across channel, but shuttle or dinghy required. Island hopper

Very nice place, 2013-06-19
Captain: , Monticello, IN (110)

Very nice facilities, great cruising area, and peaceful little village. We have been there 4 times, 3 by boat and once by car, and always enjoy it.Was just there this spring and look forward to going back again.

Nice place to wait for weather, 2013-03-15
Captain: , Britt, Ontario, Canada (184)

New docks are great on east side but George Island side a little rough. Boat drive- in a good idea. Reasonable rates

Would not stay here again, 2012-08-28
Captain: , LeClaire, Iowa (449)

My review is probably influenced by the attitude of the dock staff, but here it is: Did not answer VHF upon our arrival. Yelled our slip number to us, but there was no dock attendant to help us land, even though there were four standing around at the fuel dock. An attendant came over later and insisted we move up into the slip so they could squeeze another boat behind us. As they were doing so our keel scraped on rubbish or rocks on the bottom. No one had bothered to remove construction debris. No showers or toilets on our side of the marina but they do have a spa - go figure. Had to wait 20 minutes to get the pontoon boat taxi to take us to the showers. The good part - since they could not squeeze another boat in behind us, we had a great view of what was going on in Killarney while we ate our fish from the Red Bus.

Agree with other reviews, 2012-07-16
Captain: , Cincinnati (1800)

OK stop for the night. Nice staff and adequate docks. Marina is split and located on both sides of inlet with a courtesy water taxi operated by marina if you are on the island side.

Good Spot for One Night, 2011-11-09
Captain: , Midland, Ontario (475)

The Inn has been exquisitely refurbished. It's a great spot to tie-up for a night and let the cook out of the galley :-) Don't expect 'resort-style' amenities - there is no pool and beyond a nice restaurant and bar (food was 'OK' but expensive) there isn't much to do other than walk for 15 minutes from one end of town to the other.

comfortable marina, 2011-11-03
Captain: , Newport, R.I. (644)

Nice set up and right in town. Staff helpful and good facilities. Must stop for fish at the Killarney and stock up on wine next door.. Groceries were minimal stocked at the market but quality beef. Wonderful area and water!!!

Sportsman Lodge, 2011-09-09
Captain: , Traverse City Michigan (174)

Great Docks & facilities eager staff wonderful restaurant & bar. Obviously a lot of effort to upgrade everything. The owner gets an A+ for trying. There is no water to the dock but they ran a hose for me. Everything looks new but overall not worth the trip unless you are transiting to/from Georgian Bay

Not Impressed, 2011-09-02
Captain: , cambridge,ohio (20)

Stayed in the marina 1 night in Aug and that was enough! I called from the boat for room or slip reservations and they have yet to call me back. Restrooms were filthy from cobwebs to paper on the floor. Even when we mentioned they needed attention, nothing was done in the 17 hours we were there. Staff was all college age and younger, and could care less. The marina has no potable water on the dock, when we asked about this we were told the staff would get us a water hose to the boat, which they never did. After asking twice to no avail,we gave up. We would not stay here again.

Fabulous renovation, 2011-08-09
Captain: , Ontario (60)

Everything is new, prices are reasonable, staff is friendly and helpful

Very nice marina, 2011-08-06
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

The docks are new, but tight if you are more than 40 ft. Washrooms and showers are very clean. Restaurant/Bar at the end of the dock. You can tie to the docks across the channel and they offer a shuttle to bring you to the north side with all the facilities. Limited provisioning in Killarney, but there is a LCBO.

Sportsman Inn at Killarney, 2011-07-31
Captain: , Jeffersonville, IN (582)

The new owners have really dressed up the old Sportsman Inn. Maybe too much. The restaurant and tavern are now clean and decorated with a contempory theme. The rooms are way beyond what I expected from the Sportsman... very nice and well done. The porch and deck are now licensed to allow the consumption of licensed beverages which is a nice addition. Watch out for the bugs at dusk though as they come in force. The docks are ok but nothing special. Glad to see that "Tinkerbell" the water taxi is still in use. There didn't seem to be a lot of patrons and I hope they can survive given the work and money they have put into the place.

Captain: , Annapolis (208)

Just called them to see if they would hold a part I need for my arrival in a week. Got the old "can't do it for security reasons" but offered to give me the phone number of the post office.

Beautiful setting, 2011-07-17
Captain: , Mesa AZ (1609)

Docks are new and comfortable. Facilities are clean & manicured. Very good place to read and kick everyone go by.

Nice place to spend a day or two, 2010-08-09
Captain: , Newport, RI (10275)

We hung out here for a couple of days and enjoyed it. Very laid back. You'll find that most sailboats dock on the island side due to the cramped docks and limited maneuvering on the town side. The docks on the island side are a bit shakey to walk on, but are fine for the boat. We had plenty of water...11' at our dock.

Not much to do here. We walked to the lighthouse, which was OK, but the walk there was pretty boring. You can take your dinghy there.

If anyone tells you that you need to have Fish and Chips at the Red Bus, ignore them. It was mediocre at best and served with Craft tartar sauce in little packets. Not worth the $.

The bakery makes an apple/cinnamon bread that makes GREAT french toast. Highly recommended!

The showers are very clean and quite nice.

Restored and looking good, 2010-07-28
Captain: , Tellico Marina (290)

Nice place to stop for a day, dog friendly, good but expensive dinning, new shower facilites, new docks, Staff OUTSTANDING!!
Not a place to stock up with bulk groceries, limited and expensive.
Beer (they recylce) and liquior store within 2 blocks of marina. Stay on fuel dock side or use water taxi.

Great Service, 2010-07-22
Captain: , Sturgeon Bay, WI (287)

The docks are in great shape on the mainland side but still al litlle sketchy across the channel, but you won't find harder working people, eager to please than at Sportmen's. I thought the food was good, but they really need a killer signature dish. Our service was very good, though the food was a little pricey.

Almost there!, 2010-07-21
Captain: , Palm Coast (792)

New, New, New! Inn has been totally refurbished but food and service don't match the upscale setting. New docks on the mainland side but power and water still a work in progress. The dock staff is something to watch - young but very eager to please. On-site store has basics but one half is devoted to personalized marina goods. Nice to see the grand lady of Killarney saved and will one day earn that 5th star.

sportsman inn, 2010-07-09
Captain: , Michigan (519)

Place is looking good. All new docks on the mainland side. Last of the power and water was getting installed when we were there. main building has had renovations too. Very helpful staff.
Good stopover

Sportsmans Inn, 2010-04-17
Captain: , Sarnia (141)

Lodge is all rebuilt as of fall 2009. Very nice. New floating dock for the gas/diesel dock.

Better than we expected, 2009-08-13
Captain: , Miami Beach, FL (274)

Construction is ongoing, but restaurant is good, and piano player is great. We had a nice few days here. Dock and power reliable. Bakery and ice cream close by.

Pretty ratty, 2009-07-27
Captain: , fairland (2653)

But it has good power, water and is centally located. Very busy. Two nice docks the remaining are very poor floating wooden docks. The Inn is being rebuilt and the area is quite a mess.

2008 Update, 2008-04-14
Captain: , Toronto ON (192)

Apparently Sportsman's is up for sale again and it is unlikely that it will open for the 2008 season.

New ownership, 2008-02-22
Captain: , Tobermory (404)

In 2007 ownership changed, Docks were in need of repair. Owners where just getting things opened up in August. Check ahead for progress in 2008 season. Has potential to be a great place to dock and eat if it is restored to the previous condition and level of service.
