Reviews for Spooners Creek Marina
Captain: , East Falmouth, MA (1633)

Very nice upscale facilities in a residential setting. Dockmaster very helpful and courteous. One mile to a huge shopping mall with many restaurants through a residential community. Wifi was very good here.

Excellent All Weather Harbor, 2017-04-03
Captain: , New Bern, NC (30)

This is my second time staying at this marina. The entrance is narrow but good water. At the end of the channel is blind sharp turn to the left - I had my wife up at the bow looking for outgoing boats. Cannot emphasize that enough - a concrete wall makes it completely blind. Once inside it opens up to a marvelous basin that is protected on all sides. Joe stayed late to help us tie up and pump out. We were tied to the fuel dock and were very secure.

Lovely Marina, nice staff just 2 things missing, 2016-07-07
Captain: , United kingdom (30)

A smashing place, great staff, clean showers comfortable lounge. Good price. Nice location.
I would have given more stars but the Wifi is not good, very rarely connect, when you do its painfully slow, had to resort to mobile data for an Active Captain update. Shame there isn't a laundry either. When we came in it wasn't quite low tide, we draw 4ft and touched the bottom.

Definitely worth a stop, 2016-04-21
Captain: , Rock Hall, MD (559)

This is a beautiful, well-maintained marina. It is well protected and has excellent floating docks. There is a club house that is open during normal hours as well as very clean modern showers/restrooms. Groceries, West Marine and restaurants are about a mile away. You can easily walk it or take a cab. The staff is friendly and helpful. They stayed overtime to help us get tied up.

Hidden Jewel, 2016-01-17
Captain: , Colorado (411)

A very well appointed marina with nice floating docks in a well protected basin. Fuel available. Marina is about a mile from shopping and dining options in a nicer neighborhood so walking or a bike ride makes for reasonable access. Entry into the basin is a bit tight but we managed with our catamaran. Ramps to the docks are a bit steep from an extra high seawall, not a problem for most, but worth mentioning. Staff is normally there from 8am to 4pm but waited to get us docked and fueled. Was January when we were there, but the facility has a pool that I would assume is available for marina guests. Decent price for the area and what the marina has to offer. Would definitely stop there again if in the area

Great port in a storm, 2015-11-30
Captain: , Middle River Maryland (30)

Just a very safe protected and inexpensive place to pull into.
Excellent floating docks, beautiful surroundings, easy in and out.
Young dockmaster very helpful and a gentleman!

Nice stop!, 2015-11-08
Captain: , Oriental, NC (190)

We pulled in here when after fighting the tides all day, we realized we weren't going to make it to Swansboro. Our phone call was promptly answered and a dockhand met us at the dock. Clean bathrooms and good wi-fi. Floating docks in excellent shape. Will return.

Depends on what you're looking for, 2015-08-10
Captain: , St. Petersburg, FL (201)

Update: Aug 8, 2015 - I stayed there again and this time Terry was there (first time I believe he was on vacation). He was very accomodating and did not display the attitude I encountered on my first stay at all. Still highly recommended (as evidenced by my decision to stay there a second time!)

I agree with the previous review in that I was initially put-off by a feeling that the staff was hard to get ahold of and were going out of their way to assist me. They don't monitor 16 and when I arrived I called the phone number they gave, but got voicemail. I tied up, unassisted (no problem for me). Waited, called on the VHF - still no answer. I then walked to the office and found a lady and asked if anyone was working the marina - initially she was very defensive. I was about to continue on to the next marina but decided not to.

And I'm glad I stayed. Once you get past the "we're not really a marina" attitude, the ammenties are top notch. The marina is actually part of the condo units and the facilities are part of the condo club-house - so they really aren't a commercial marina in that sense. But the facilities are top notch. Better yet, they're within a mile of a Super Walmart, Office Depot, Lowes Hardware - you name it. I'd almost rather keep this the well kept secret that it is, but I would recommend it.

The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the attitude of the staff that I encountered.

Staff on the clock, 2015-06-15

Overall nice facility, but when I called to say I was arriving at 4:15 the dock hand said he leaves at 4 and told me where to tie up.

Excellent provisioning, 2015-06-10
Captain: , St Louis (1085)

We stopped here to reprovision while waiting for a weather window. 24-hour Walmart Supercenter (organic & gf options) is 1 mile--harbor master can advise sidewalk route & busy intersection you"ll cross. Also, 1.5 to West Marine, PetSmart & Dick's sporting goods (at intersection, cut across to Belks mall--there is a light to cross the next main road). Clean bathrooms (but semi-private with curtain). Laundry would be nice. We were a 18 ft beam cat and they put us on the fuel t-head. Nice staff greeted us as we docked and checked on us to see if we needed anything regularly. Narrow entrance & mostly powerboats, but we would stop here again. Highly recommend

Easy access and a bargain., 2015-06-04
Captain: , Sunbury, Ga (352)

Easy access off the ICW and protected. Terry, the dockmaster is super freindly and very knowledgeable. Electric included in the dockage price. Free pump out. Very clean restrooms. Dog friendly.
Will be back.

Quiet nights stay, 2015-05-31
Captain: , Midway,GA (261)

We were met at the dock by Terry the dockmaster to help us into our slip and tie us up. Terry was very nice and friendly and gave us a lot of local information about things to do in the area. We took on fuel which was $2.67 cash price for diesel and took advantage of the FREE pumpout.
The marina is very easy to get into ,very protected, nice floating docks. The restrooms and showers were spotless. Some of the cleanest we have seen.

Beautiful marina, 2015-05-24
Captain: , Knoxville, Tennessee (230)

Stopped for the night, but ended up staying an extra day. Easy in/out right of the ICW. Very residential and therefore quiet. No restaurant but loads of local fishing boats that leave early every morning. Great dinghy adventure checking out the beautiful homes up the canals. Very protected. Easy 1 mile hike to walmart, west marine, several restaurants. Sidewalks all the way. Staff very helpful. Great place to walk dogs. Definite do over

We'll Be Back, 2015-05-04
Captain: , Annapolis (434)

We tried Spooners Creek based on some old reviews and were pleasantly surprised. All facilities are first rate. Terry Willis, the dockmaster and Joseph, the assistant DM, are most helpful and flexible to one's desires. The docks are in great shape and the basin is very protected, surrounded by small condominium buildings and single family homes. All major stores (Walmart, Best Buy, restaurants) are within a pleasant mile walk through residential streets. All this for $1.50/ft, electricity included.

Nice stop 4/23/15, 2015-05-02
Captain: , Atlanta (770)

Great facilities, easy in/out, very secure, even on face dock. We walked to Wal-Mart for groceries - a bit of a hike, but do-able - maybe a half mile each way.

Very clean, well kept., 2014-12-21
Captain: , Traverse City, Mi (281)

The only reason I did not give this marina 5 stars is becasue of no laundry for transients. The shower facilities are clean and well maintained. We draw 6 feet and were pushing sand a couple of times on the way in at low tide; otherwise, a great stop. Try Plaza Mexico - nearby- for some tasty mexican food if you stop!

Convenient to ICW, 2014-11-12
Captain: , Annapolis (3379)

Clean and well maintained marina. Easy walk to Walmart and other stores. Good place to get provisions. Staff is excellent!

Protected marina, 2014-10-23
Captain: , St. Thomas (90)

Good stop off the ICW for the night. The facility is spotless and Terry (dockmaster) was very helpful. Restrooms and club house are great. We were able to walk to the local Walmart to get groceries. Shopping centers within a mile. The only service they don't have is washer/dryers.

Great Stop, 2013-11-18
Captain: , Vandemere NC (418)

Pulled into Spooners Creek Marina for the night 11/14/2013. Dock help were great, easy access, great shower rooms and pleasant stay. Walked to town where there werte numerous restaurants, drug store and a Walmart. Enjoyed the stop.

GREAT MARINA, 2013-10-21
Captain: , Ancramdale (220)

We spent last night at this beautiful marina. We were a little nervous about depths because of earlier posts, but spoke to the dockmaster and he assured us that if we stayed in the center of the channel our 4.5' draft would be fine. We arrived and departed at one hour off of low tide and saw no less than 2.5' under our keel.

We didn't use any of the facilities, but the floating docks are pristine and the area around the marina is beautiful. We are definitely going to stay there again.

Good services and food about a mile away.

Nice Well Mannered Place, 2013-07-02
Captain: , New Bern (318)

The marina and area are quiet and upper class. Good area for dogs to run around, even a little private beach along the seawall for him. A pool for you. It's your typical country club fare with a mix of both nice and stuffy people. Luigis Pizza about a mile down the road is recommended.

I've been here for about a week now due to weather and work. They don't allow liveaboards, which you become here after the week mark... Apparently they've had some bad experiences in the past and the HOA stays pretty on top of keeping things in line. Did not see many transients during my stay and the dockmaster can be a little tough to get ahold of. Flaoting docks in excellent shape.

Stay to the reds on approach for deeper water.

Overall, the place is great.

Laid Back First Class, 2013-06-21
Captain: , Perry, Kansas (317)

Stopped for one evening, arrived after five and the marina personnel stayed to greet us and do a pump out. Great rest rooms, laundry, pool and close to dining/shopping (1 mile). Will stop again.

Very Nice Marina, 2013-06-19
Captain: , North Myrtle Beach (251)

We selected Spooners because it appeared to be a small quiet marina along the ICW. We were pleased with the facilities including floating docks, easy access to fuel dock, clean restrooms. The dockmaster went out of his way to make us feel welcome. He provided us with information concerning shopping nearby, etc. We plan to stop here again.

Very Nice Marina - Quiet, lovely amenities and close to all shopping!, 2012-10-07
Captain: , Lake Simcoe, Ontario (240)

We came in here today to get an "unbusy" start to the ICW tomorrow morning and was pleasantly surprised - very nice facilities, pool, etc - very quiet - short walk to a good selection of shopping :)

Its Columbus Day weekend and the Morehead City harbor was a ZOO of boaters going in every direction ;( Glad to be out of the rat race!

Called the marina and left a message - received a call back in 5 minutes - and received nice help tieing up and info about the services!

We will come back again!

Will always stop here, 2012-08-30
Captain: , Sodus Point, NY (718)

We spent two nights waiting for heavy rain to pass. Very friendly and helpful. Never saw less than 6' in the channel 30 minutes before low tide. Staying on the red side. Previously reported shallower on the green side.

Beutiful homes to see on your walk to the stores. Very well kept marina with clubhouse and pool.

The marina and the covenience to shopping are why we will always stop here every trip by. And Luigi's Pizza is a must!

Never Returned My Phone Call!, 2012-04-27
Captain: , Mystic, CT (382)

We called on Thursday morning to make a reservation for today, Friday. Received answering machine stating the marina hours and that they were open 7 days a week. Leave a message and we will call as soon as we can. I left a message asking if they had a slip available for the following night for a 40' power boat, and left my name and telephone number. I never received a call back and it is now Friday evening.
Guess they don't want any transient business any longer!!
Rated a one star because I had to rate something. In my mind, they don't deserve any.

Very nice marina, 2012-04-10
Captain: , St. Somewhere (530)

Only stopped for ice and fuel. Great service even on Easter Sunday. Very clean marina. They accept transients. Was quoted 1.50/ft. If you stay you have access to pool, restrooms, showers, etc. very nice and clean.

There are two sides to every story, 2012-02-15
Captain: , Spooners Creek, NC (173)

Spooners Creek Marina -

We investigated this incident and found the following:

Boaters are not told to "come on in". Reported depth and conditions are reported at MLLW and captains make their own decisions. The entering boat asked for channel depth and 5 feet at low tide was reported. Further, the captain was advised to favor the red side (east) for the deepest water, avoiding the shoaling from the green (west) side. Apparently he drifted to the red side or simply passed the red marks on the wrong side. In any case, he grounded well outside of the markers where the water is very shallow. Unfortunately, the fresh southwest breeze was pushing towards the shoal water, making it difficult for him to get back into the channel on a falling tide.

The harbormaster had no way of assisting him other than to offer him phone numbers for Sea Tow. There is no boat at the marina suitable to unground him.

it's regrettable when anyone runs aground but are disappointed in his critique. There was plenty of water in the channel but he managed to stray outside the markers. It's unfortunate for this captain to blame someone else for his error.

I hope he'll visit Spooners Creek again. The channel was dredged in March 2011 to it's full width with 5.5' at MLLW.

Visitors are always welcome. However, if you stray outside the marks you will run aground. As always, be sure to compensate for current and wind set in narrow channels.

Nice little stopover, 2011-10-25
Captain: , Chicago (30)

Traveling south, we decided to stop in at spooners based on reviews.

The combination of current and wind as you enter the channel to the marina can be difficult to navigate. One has to be careful not to go too slow and lose steerage in the entrance channel or they may quickly be aground outside the channel in about 1-2 feet of water.

2 hours before low tide we saw 6.5-7 feet in the center of the narrow entrance channel 10/25/2011.

Muddy bottom. Room for no more than 5 boats.

There are no sailboats in the docks here save one 30ft catamaran. We are the only sloop and draw 5 feet, another 30 foot cat is our only neighbor anchored here tonight.

A nice quiet place to stop, 2011-06-06
Captain: , Beaufort, NC (12)

We have found that this is a great little marina. It is well protected from storms and the facilities are first class. It has a great lounge that includes large screen tv, kitchen, and plenty of space for boaters to get together. Nice pool is located just off the lounge. It only lacks its own restaurant but there are several about 1 to 2 miles away as well as Super Walmart, Lowes and West Marine

Don't Trust Dock Master, 2010-12-10
Captain: , Detroit, MI (160)

We called the marina to verify depth at entrance. We were told by the dockmaster that there was at least 5 ft at low tide and to come on in. As we tried to enter, the depth sounder showed 3.3 feet. We called the dockmaster back and he still told us to come on in the water would get deeper. We ended up hard aground and all he did was walk out to the point to look at us. Nothing more needs to be said.
