Reviews for Spitzer Lakeside Marina
Good Marina, Coveniently Located, 2017-01-25
Captain: , Erie, PA (120)

A very large and conveniently located marina if you are travelling up or down the lake, stayed there last summerr on our trip from Erie to Kellys island. Agree with issues cited in previous reviews. Restrooms, laundry, restaurant and marina office located in single complex that can be a good half-mile from your boat. Plus, fuel dock located across the bay away from the office. So, a bike is really helpful. Staff are good but are back in office complex, no hands-on help with docking etc. All of this can make the logistics of your stay (docking, paying, fueling, etc.) complicated, if not for this, would rate at five stars.

There have been several Rust Belt stories in national media that profiled Lorain. When we had last stopped in 2010 we were amazed at the scale of a huge empty residential development adjacent to the marina (roads, utilities, no homes) that literally felt like a ghost town. Its nice to see that this has filled in with new housing and the marina and adjacent waterfront park area are nicely developed with bike and walking trails, attractive landscaping, etc.

Access to the marina from the Lake is Easy. The marina personnal are fun, friendly and helpful, The only resurant is Jackalopes on the premises and they serve Good Food and were super busy when we were there. It is a long walk to town or any services. Dockage rates were standard $1.50 a ft. We were there on a saturday night and there was a powerboater group that was drunk and loud into the earlyAM and would not quit. There is no security on premises. I would stop here again passing through but not for an extended stay. There is laundry facilities on premises as also a boaters "Lounge".

(See my review of Loran Harbor for navigation issues) Much of what the previous reviewer said is still true. I kept my 35 ft boat here from June of 2007 through September 2010. I didn't launch in 2011 and sold my vessel in May of 2012. My most recent experiences relate to visits to the Marina helping the new owner of my vessel get acclimated. I found the staff much better than when I was staying here (not that they weren't always freindly, just stretched thin), the sewer smell still hits when the wind is from the Northwest. The biggest positive change has been the completion of the city park portion of the marina. It is lovely to walk in and provides better access to the farther out piers. One thing that hasn't changed is that Jacalope's restaurant still serves grreat food with a great view of the Lake Erie sunsets.

It is a lovely harbor with a million dollar potential! The Jackalope Restaurant is very good and onsite. You should have a bike for this place. There is a More For Less Grocery about a 15 minute walk away over the drawbridge in downtown. Downtown at night is sketchy.
Checkout time is 12 noon.
The second section of the marina is located about 3/4 mile upstream under the drawbridge. That is where the advertised pool is located.
Our 30 foot boat was initially $60 a night, then we remembered the US Boaters discount thanks to Active Captain, so we paid $45. The women in the office was helpful. The other boaters on the docks, for the most part, were really helpful in providing the lay of the land, offering rides and giving tips. Some of the fishermen, however, are attitude and language challenged (plethora of F-bombs). There is also adverse possesion of some dock space by party chairs.
The Marina Dockers Lounge (access included in your rental) has a tv and laundry inside. It closes promptly at 4:30 pm and we don't care if your laundry is done or not. The bathrooms are located in the back of the same building. They were clean and showers were good.
We didn't see the mentioned golf cart but we had bikes so it was ok for us.
We were first given G104 for a slip.. They don't bother to clean this dock this far out. So it is covered in bird crap, literally, punctuated with animal scat, fish carcasses, broken beer bottles, etc. The nearest neighbor was a blue heron. Fortunately, my wife had a broken foot so we got a new slip right by the promenade.
We think the attitude of other employees was poor. Much could be done with this place, like improving the times for access to the laundry, and actually having a working wifi internet connection!

We love it!!Some of the things that people mentioned are quite avoidable (ie: there is valet golf carts to drive you to the restrooms, etc.) Great people, and a good value- short trip to the lake, no long river ride!! The resterant is great, but if you want the steak of the week, or prime rib- get there before 7 PM!

Manager was helpful. No one available to assist with dock lines. A long walk to shower and restrooms. On site restaurant was very good and reasonably priced.

Not one of my favorites, 2011-08-03
Captain: , Sandusky, OH (294)

If you are going from Sandusky to Cleveland, it is a natural mid point but not for us. Twice we stopped there and both times were disappointing. Very long walk from transient dock to bathrooms. Multiple security gates. Nice people but not very knowledgable. Tried to stick our 43' boat in a 35' slip. Plus, Lorain a is sad shell of its former self. A bit depressing.

Friendly Staff, 2011-06-20
Captain: , Caseville, MI (341)

The staff went out of their way to help us in any way they could. There is a restaurant onsite, we didn't eat there, but others said it was excellant. 2 washers & dryers available for laundry.
Makes for a good overnight stop as your headed across the lake.

Not freindly staff. Not much close by, rundown neighborhood.
There is a Subway shop! Expensive for what you get.
