Reviews for Southport City Free Dock
Closed due to Hurricane Matthew Damage, 2016-10-11
Captain: , Southport, NC (120)

The Southport City Free Dock was damaged by Hurricane Matthew and has been closed by the city until further notice.

Free Dock near Town, 2016-10-01
Captain: , charleston (50)

I've tried to get to this dock before and didn't have enough water for my 6' draw. Came in yesterday during a thunderstorm, it was empty on the end and had enouigh water to easily get to the dock. Registered with th e Police Dept. for 48 hrs with water and 115V electical. Not the newest structure but did I mention it is free.

Great stop for a free dock, 2016-05-13
Captain: , Grand Rivers, Ky (1652)

5-6-16 All of the finger slips were full when we arrived but there was plenty of room and depth for 40 trawler with 4 ft draft. There is a 110 volt outlet for free electric is you have an adapter for 30 amp power. Easy walk to restaurants.

Not my Boat, 2015-07-06
Captain: , Little River SC (395)

We didn't stay here but pulled up to it hoping to dock. Very, very shalllow and the docks are about to fall down. Dock are your own risk.

Great Stop in Quaint Hstoric Town, 2015-06-11
Captain: , Lizella GA (1414)

The docks are primative and it takes some inginuity to rig your fenders but with the free water and electric and the resturants and town history it is a great stop. Southport is a city near the mouth of the Cape Fear River. It has an intriguing history as depicted in the town and local museum. From Spanish explorers in the 1500's to British settlements, pirates and privateers. It is the film location for many TV series such as Revenge, Under the Dome and Safe Haven. Films which have been made in Southport include I Know What You Did Last Summer, Summer Catch, Domestic Disturbance, Crimes of the Heart, Mary and Martha, Nights in Rodanthe, A Walk to Remember and Cape Fear. This is a great stop. I have now stopped here twice and will do it again.

3 stars for free, 1 star for condition, 2015-04-18
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (2709)

We moved from the free dock at the Provisioning Company having stayed there 1 night and patronized their restaurant. It was a good deal with the floating docks, but a little wakey from the nearby ICW.

We moved to the City Dock to find it sturdy enough, but cobbled together in such a way that it can make tie-up a bit challenging with the 5 foot todal range. I didn't really care about electric or water, but the 15A electric outlet did not work for our visit.

If you are watching your budget for dockkage, this is OK, but the restaurant docks are much better.

Wonderful free dock with electric and water, 2014-12-14
Captain: , Chapin, South Carolina (410)

There is one slip at the City Dock and we were met on the dock by Robert Creech who lives across the street. He was wonderful in helping us and offered us a ride to the grocery store. With a full moon we had a 5 Ft tide. Fender boards were needed as well as leaving lines slack, including electric. The electric is 110/20 amp. If this dock is full go to Fishy Fish or the Provision Company. Fishy fish will let you dock for the night for free if you have dinner. Provision company also has a couple of slips and they just closed for the season so those docks are available. Great quaint town!

friendly little town charm, 2014-09-06
Captain: , Cape Coral Fl (12354)

this dock has a bad rap as a folling down rickity dock but I have tied my boat to worse and ben happy for it (like paying to stay at Portside in morehead their dock is worse!!) this place has electric and water and the friendlyist little town around it! Stop in and visit with the locals and check it out you make it you regular stop.

Very little wake action, 2014-03-10
Captain: , Earth (232)

You can't beat free water/electricity and short walk to town and restaurants. Tide is about 5ft and most boats are in mug at low tide. Free dock is only at end of the finger dock, rest belongs to residents. There are a number of attractions, most of the local restaurants are great and the local Silver Coast Winery tasting room was outstanding.

Very nice scenic corner for a night, 2013-10-20
Captain: , Charlotte Harbor, FL (1548)

Free dock, city water, 15 amp power outlets.
Across from lots of restaurants, watching boats go by on the ICW.....priceless.

Yeah, rustic, lots of tidal range, use fenders, etc....

Good Free Stay, 2013-10-02
Captain: , Houston, Texas (970)

Dock is a bit rundown and the end needs fenders against the pilings, but for free with water and 15 amp power (have the right adapter) this is a winner. Walk to food and ice cream and walk the neighborhood to look at the old houses.
Tie up for a 3 foot tide.

Great overnighter, 2013-06-11
Captain: , Jacksonville Fl (1520)

We found the tide, current, and wind in a knockdown dragout fight out on the Cape Fear River so headed back in to wait for morning. The dock is solid and there is a 15 amp outlet available, all for my favorite price, FREE. If Robert is sitting on his porch he can fill you with any desired local info. A call to the police dept ( number on the dock) clears you for a 24 hour stay.

Great location, has water, FREE., 2013-05-06
Captain: , Cape Coral FL (4176)

The dock is short for a 40 footer but doable if you are a skilled boatsman. There is water at the end of the dock. No electric. Great location to walk to any of 4 good eateries across the water. If you an MTOA member, the MTOA Port Captains for Southport Bob and Kay Creech will meet you here. The live nearby. Found free WiFi. Tie up for a 5 ft tidal rise/fall. All very nice people in this town. Love it. Will definitely stop here on the way back down. Did I mention its my favorite price: FREE.

Good in SW to NW winds., 2013-01-29
Captain: , Charleston (70)

Tie up with your bow towards the town. In a SW /NW wind the boat lays off the crude pier. We slept soundly in a 10-15 knot SW wind. Easy walk through town. I would not have liked it in winds from the east.

Terrible Small & Shallow, 2012-12-10
Captain: , Westport, NY (30)

The docks are in very shallow water and seem to be taken up by local boats. Anything over 8 feet of beam shouldn't even try to get in

Don't miss it!, 2012-12-05
Captain: , Rockland,ME (312)

The dock has 2 new pilings and has been spiffed( gotta be a Mainer to appreciate) up. If you are even the slightest bit adventurist stop here. I was here during settled weather with the boats lit up for Christmas and it was quite enchanting. Robert, the official/unofficial harbormaster as a one man Chamber of Commerce. Thanks Robert!

Vaughan Taylor, 2012-12-04
Captain: , Beaufort, NC (401)

If you care at all about your boat or your safety getting off and on, DO NOT dock here. However Southport is a wonderful town to visit, with great antique shops and fine restaurants, so find another place to dock!

What a friendly town, 2012-11-15
Captain: , Stony Point, NY (852)

The rating is more for the town than the dock. The "T" dock was rough but useable for a 40' trawler. At low tide it was very difficult to get down from our pilot house to the very narrow walkway. On the other hand we were met by the friendly local "pirate" (They were having a belated "Pirate Regatta" with costumes that had been postponed for 2 weeks after halloween because of Sandy) We enjoyed lunch at the Provision Company and watched the regatta. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Later that evening we were able to enjoy their live band across the water.

Although it is small, there is also room to anchor in the basin for a couple of boats if the dock is full, or looks funky.

It is free, after all!, 2012-08-28
Captain: , Chesapeake Bay (592)

Yes, it isn't fancy, but it is easy to tie up to (keep an eye on the tide). Restaurants and the town are close. Marine supplies and hardware are a bike ride away. I've been there three times and will return.

Dock Reported Damaged, 2012-05-27
Captain: , Wilmington DE (792)

This has always been a 'rough' dock in need of repairs. Curently it is reported damaged but useable. The town has allocated funds for repairs. The 24 hour limit is sporadically enforced. But it is a wonderful town with friendly, helpful people.

Southport City Dock, 2012-04-14
Captain: , Lewisporte, Nl. (619)

We were not able to dock in any slip because they are too narrow for our 13 foot beam. Any vessel greater than a 9 foot beam will only be able to use the T dock that is suitable for up to a 40 foot boat. The docks are in rough shape and it appears that many slips are used by permanent residents. Not recommending this dock.

Death Trap, 2011-10-09
Captain: , Full Time Cruisers (2244)

If the city solicitor knew of the condition and the liability associated with the dock's condition, he would have the dock torn down. This is a very run down dock, especially the "T" head for transients. Strongly recommend you pass on this one. It gets one star only beacause I'm required to rate it.

Good Free Dock but Watch the Tides!, 2011-06-06
Captain: , East Haddam, CT (315)

It's free and in the middle of town, so access to restaurants etc. is good. Free water, 110 only for power. Dock is old and fixed and you tie to pilings- watch the tides they can be 5ft. or more.

Not in the best shape - but workable, 2011-05-29
Captain: , Deltaville (200)

Went by foot to check out the 'free dock' as we managed to get into the dock at the Provision Co. and ate there. Was surprised that it was unoccupied even on a busy weekend.

Dock is really nothing more than a few piles with a wooden pier that the locals fish from. Not bad for free, but definately nothing fancy.

Can walk to the numerous fish restraunts and the amazing ice cream place opposite the Provision Co.

Nice Stop - Friendly Locals, 2010-11-24
Captain: , Atlantic Coast (341)

Can't beat the price. Very friendly and helpful locals. Note the following - we arrived, docked and called the number listed. Person who answered had to check to see if someone had already called ahead to reserve the spot - thus not necessarily available even if no boat docked. No problem with 5' draft.

Free dock for one boat, 2010-08-24
Captain: , Everglades City, FL (230)

the locals are helpful and welcoming. A ladder has been added to the dock to assist with egress at low tides. The docks are fixed and some bolt heads protruding from the docks require creative use of fenders. Both water and 15amp power were avaliable on the dock.

We enjoy the town of Southport. Noce area to stretch the legs, plenty of resturant options, and coffee shops. We found an couple open wifi networks avaliable at the dock.

nice layover spot, 2010-06-10
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (297)

Fixed docks so low tide is a little nerving. but good place to tie up for night

It's free, but there are issues, 2010-05-20
Captain: , Sarasota (1427)

Have stayed here twice. Biggest issue is 4 1/2 foot tidal range. You may need to get off boat from fly bridge at low tide. Maybe 6 feet of depth at low tide. No services or facilities. A bunch of nice folks live nearby and come to visit (and even help) when you dock. It is convenient to town and the restaurants on the harbor. You can also anchor in the harbor - more depth available. But it is free.

Great Stop-This is the FREE DOCK, 2009-10-11
Captain: , Melbourne Florida (4616)

Nice town with outstanding people. Great place to walk and visit. More towns should offer free dockage for visiting boaters.
