Reviews for South Port Marine
Peaceful, convenient, and protected, 2016-09-22
Captain: , Elizabeth City, NC (110)

We were loosing our marbles in the wakes out by Pomroy Rock so we decided to splurge on dockage in the most protected place in Portland. Soooo glad that we did! This is a great cozy place that offers convenient access to the city, parks, and provisions. Water taxi can take you into the city for $5 one way or $10 round trip. We bought a bus ticket at the South Portland city hall and took the bus all over. NOTE: South Portland bus doesn't run on the weekend. It is a neat walk across the pedestrian path of the Casco Bay Bridge with great views. Portland is very bike-friendly with many bike lanes and paths. The marina has a nice gas grill that you can use to entertain friends or crew. Some wake manages to make into the marina but it is not bad. South Portland has apparently seen much growth and is a nice peaceful place in itself. I recommend taking the dink, bike, or water taxi over to Bug Light park for a fantastic sunset with Portland views.

very friendly and welcoming, 2016-07-08

a great place to provision as there is every kind of store you could use within walking distance. it's a long but doable walk to all the eateries in downtown Portland. the staff was friendly and helpful. even the guy pushing a wheelbarrow full of rocks in 90 degree heat had a smile and welcoming words for me.

Friendly and Professional Staff, Quiet Location, 2015-09-05

We spent 2 nights at this very well-run marina in August. The staff always had a smile and went out of their way to accommodate us, in finding propane, a restaurant ( the Snow Squall is excellent next door), a pharmacy (short walk), and answering any question. We were fortunate to arrive on the day of their annual slipholders' Appreciation One of the most welcoming marinas we have been in on our 6 month cruise!

Great spot for a great price, 2015-08-05
Captain: , Mashpee River (507)

Been here four times. Service has been great. The employees are always friendly and helpful. Location is perfect for exploring Portland. $10 cab ride back from Oldport. Price cannot be beat. It is not fancy, but it is well worth the stop.

Clean fast and efficent.

Our new go-to location in the Portland area, 2014-08-20
Captain: , York, ME (1971)

Best price in the Portland area for a full-service slip. Facility is well maintained and safe. Staff is friendly and helpful. Excellent protection from wakes at all but high tide, when a few small ones make it over the sand bars that surround the marina. Walking distance to all the basics. The marina recommended Airport Taxi. Mohammad, the driver, picked us up at the supermarket to bring all our groceries back for $5. This area of South Portland seemed very quiet, hardly any traffic. Restaurant next door is very good, with a nice bar and lounge area. There is a nice municipal park just under the bridge, and the walkway up to the bridge provides a nice overlook of Portland Harbor. The marina store has a lot of basic maintenance items. Laundry seemed a little high at $2.25/load for a top-loader. The walk from C or D dock is longer than average.

Yes, the approach is through some skinny water at low tide, but it's extremely well marked. No, this isn't in the bustling center of a large downtown. If those things bother you then read the posts below with the lower ratings. I think this marina easily earns four stars.

Good location for visiting Portland, 2014-08-19
Captain: , Northport MI (405)

Good location-out of ferry and lobster boat traffic. Friendly staff and live aboards. Nice amenities. We were on D dock and was a bit of a walk to restrooms and office if that's important. Less than a mile to Hannaford's, Shaw's, Ace hardware, Dollar General. Local Grocery store on Ocean St with local produce and good butcher. 1.5 miles across Casco Bridge to heart of old Portland and restaurants, shops, tours. Bike friendly environment.

Cheapest slips in southern Maine, 2014-08-13
Captain: , Niantic, CT (564)

Reserved a slip a couple of days in advance. Nice wide wooden floating docks with 30/50A and cable. No wifi. Well marked channel entrance. Pumpout $5 token available from the marine store. Helpful staff. Coin operated laundry and clean shower/head facilities. A basic marina with a large liveaboard population. Short walk to Hanneford's and Shaw's grocery stores and an Ace hardware with some small shops along the way. Paid $65/night for our 45' trawler with 50 amp service using a Boat US discount.

Great spot to get out of the Portland traffic, 2014-08-07
Captain: , Biddeford, Me. Saco River (90)

Excellent spot to hunker down. The people are superbly professional and make your stay feel very welcomed. The facilities are well planned and kept. There is no bouncing around here from the night traffic so the next morning will proceed with a good night's rest under your belts. Access to Portland can be had by taxi. Food and resturants are within walking distance.

Highly recommend this spot.

Others Better, 2012-07-03
Captain: , Portland, ME (200)

I recommend South Port if...
did not want to be in the downtown night action - then I'd go to DiMillo's; did not want a marina with lots of social events - then I'd go to Spring Point; did not want a berth with superb maintenance facilities - then I'd go to Port Yacht Services; did not want a marina with a yacht club feel - then I'd go to Maine Yacht Center, if none of those attributes appeals, this is your spot in Portland.

nice marina with a shallow entrance, 2011-06-25
Captain: , Portland, ME (10)

with a 6 foot draft we had to raise the keel to depart at low tide

Nice but far from downtown, 2010-09-19
Captain: , Morehead City (160)

We enjoyed our short stay here. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. The price is great, for Portland, but there isn't much within walking distance. There is a Hannaford about 1/2 mile away and Wendy's and the like. Good protection. Didn't try the restaurant across the parking lot.

nice, but watch the tide, 2010-09-13
Captain: , New York, NY (200)

nice place, quiet, calm water, nice view of Portland - but only about 7' of water at the entrance at low tide - and the entrance is pretty skinny

Good location, 2010-04-23
Captain: , Ipswich, MA (318)

This is a good place to go to avoid the high prices of the Portand old city waterfront marina's. It is also well protected from the busy waterfront with the constant wakes. There are lots of places to walk to 1/2 mile away is a mall/shopping/supermarkets/bbq. The staff here is very friendly and helpful, they offer full service fuel/pumpout/repair/store.
Been going here for years, bathrooms are clean, on site wahers/dryers. Downtown Portland is an $7 taxi ride, so it is no biggie. There are also water taxis that will deliver you to old port.

Well protected, 2009-10-25
Captain: , Poughkeepsie, NY (6053)

Well protected but sparse. Nothing much nearby but a good overnight stay if you want peace and quiet near Portland.
