Reviews for Sombrero Marina Dockside
Reasonable price dockmaster friendly, 2016-05-24
Captain: , Ruskin Florida (702)

We came in after the dock master Roy closed on Sat noon. Cost was 1.75 ft. plus $10. for electric/water. Fixed dock. Shower ok at least clean. Laundry 3 washers/3 dryers $2.00 each. Dock master stashed the the key for us since he wasn't there... very accomodating. I'd stay here again.

Helpful Manager and friendly staff., 2014-07-14
Captain: , Miami (293)

Usual collection of Keys crazies around, especially in summer, but all appear friendly. Restaurant food was good. Management try hard to keep the heads and showers clean but this looks like an uphill struggles as the heads are shared with the restaurant. Overall I like the place but the loud music could be an issue for those looking for a quieter life.

Great Cruisers dock here during the Winter, 2014-05-05
Captain: , Jekyll Island Ga (482)

Boot Key Harbor is vastly improved since we visited here in our sailboat 15 years ago.
The cruisers on the docks during the winter are wonderful. Very nice folks. The docks are rundown but adequate. The pump outs are $5 and $10. No WiFi was there we could use for Jan, Feb and then we left. The street with a bad curve is right there at your slip with some dirt/gravel parking. Nice to walk or ride bikes to stores nearby or dingy to any where on the harbor. Watch for traffic. Walk around Golf Course is nice. I never figured out the dog walk where two large Great Danes and other dogs were allowed to poop near the cafe and the owners never picked up after their pets. Big sign and free doggie bags. You share the restroom with the bar and people off the street. I looked in the shower once very dirty. The cafe was good for lunch or breakfast but the kitchen is too small to support a crowd for happy hour. Lots of stoned druggies in the evenings. The band may have been good but they play so loud with bad acoustics you can't understand the words or have a conversation. For the price we paid with the lack of amenities and hazards were not worth the hassle. Won't be back.

Premier Location, 2014-03-17
Captain: , mystic, Ct (155)

You can't beat this marina's well protected location. We went bow in and had a peaceful view of the mangroves. Publix, Kmart, Walgreens and numerous restaurants are all within a very short bike ride and/or moderate walk. Sombrero Beach is 2.5 miles away.
We'd give the newly opened restaurant at the marina 1 star. Eric Stone may be a great musican, but he's no restauranteur. Go for the music and a cold beer, but skip the food.
Try "Burdines" for the best french fries and homemade hush puppies; great place.
We can't speak to the marinas showers/restrooms for we never used them; but word of mouth is they're not great. We didn't use the laundry facilities either, we have our own, but it didn't look very clean.
The staff was helpful. But, what really made or stay memorable was meeting all the other cruisers. A truly great group of fun, loving people. 10 stars to our fellow cruisers.

Nice restaurant, 2014-03-10
Captain: , Key Colony Beach (130)

Tried to get in by boat (I live down here), but couldn't find a spot to dock, to go eat.

Leilani, Annapolis, MD, 2014-02-10
Captain: , Annapolis MD. (101)

We agree with other comments rated as a one and two star. The showers are filthy and you share the bathrooms with the bar patrons. Our slip was 5 slips down from the bar with loud music playing to 10 PM. We left , forfeiting some of our deposit for a cleaner/quiter attmosphere. Dockside bar, however, has good food. drink, and a hard working friendly staff.

Rockin' hot spot!, 2014-01-04
Captain: , Pt Bay Marina, Charlotte Vt (95)

Great atmosphere, very clean and professionally run. Great friendly staff with good happy hour prices. Live music every night. Eric Stone Band plays 4 or 5 nights a week. Sunday is open mike night....great fun! Food is very good and fairly priced. Try the pork handles! A great Island bar located at Sombrero Dockside Marina....free dinghy tie up.

open for business, 2013-12-31
Captain: , Cocoa Beach (287)

bar & restaurant are open. entertainment every night. never a dull moment. I give it a 10 for fun but bring your own facilities.

He has performed at venues from Australia to the Caribbean, and has a large and growing fan base. Wherever Eric performs, you can count on a crowd developing and a party ensuing.

Kim%u2019s prior business experience and a deep understanding of customer service and quality is a major reason the new Dockside is already a big success. Tell them Tom send you :)

Dockside bar grand opening, 2013-12-15
Captain: , Marblehead, OH (255)

Grand opening this week, entertainment day and night. Limited menu but food was good and prices are average for this area. Place was packed last night for the boat parade.

Shows Improvement, 2013-12-01
Captain: , Winter Garden, Fl (2173)

The restaurant/bar are open...they need to work out some kinks and lower their prices a tad, but overall it was good. Great music, but the volume prohibits any conversation so drink more and learn sign language.

The marina was great, fair prices, good slips, wi-fi, cable, and pump out at the slip.

Restaurant Progressing, 2013-08-03
Captain: , Bonita Springs (484)

New operators are saying the restaurant/bar will re-open this Fall. Repairs are progressing albeit slowly. Promising to have a focus on music and local musicians.

Rebuilding is in progress, 2013-05-12
Captain: , Dallas (57)

The substructure for the bar and restaurant is in progress and is looking very solid. Hope this favorite watering hole and eatery reopened soon. Dockside is a Marathon fixture.

Still a great place, 2013-03-16
Captain: , Reedville, VA (688)

We give it a five for all the great folks which make up this marina community. Although the facilities have had their share of ups and downs, the staff and the boaters make the stay worthwhile. Just spent two and a half months there through one of the down times and had the greatest time ever. Rumor has it the all will be well by next year. No matter, we made our reservations for the next season already.

Restrooms are open at this time., 2013-02-16
Captain: , Roseville, MN (362)

This is usually full during the high season. Assistant dock-master had to pull his boat for a bottom job so were really lucky to get a slip. People are friendly. Easy bike riding from this location. Restrooms are cleaned daily. Probably will be remodeled/replaced when the bar and restaurant are replaced. Very quiet marina now as there is no daily band. Laundry machines are okay. Docks are in good shape.

Bar and Restaurant Closed, 2013-01-22
Captain: , Branford, CT (910)

The bar, restaurant and bathroom facilities are closed. Scuttlebutt is some building code problem. The whole building is surrounded by "keep out" yellow tape. I'm not sure what the boats in the marina are using for shower/bath facilities. Call ahead for details if this is a destination for you

A Marathon state of mind, 2012-06-26
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (639)

This has been the local live aboard boater hangout forever. 50% of the patrons sport ponytails. You need not dress up to come here. The patrons are friendly and the staff hustles. The bar is excellent and the food is OK. The ambience and location are superb. The facilities are typical of Marethon - long in the tooth and run-down.

Rocco's dockside bar/restaurant, 2012-06-09
Captain: , Carolina Beach, NC (185)

Great bar/restaurant with lots of keys personality. It is one of the hot spots for much of the boating community in the harbor.

A dump at the end of the harbor,, 2012-06-09
Captain: , San Francisco, CA (211)

Bad location, tired docks .lousy karoke and bad food. This place has it all.

Great Atmosphere, 2012-04-15
Captain: , Deale, MD (31)

Spent Feb and Mar here. Strange to give a marina with really unacceptable restrooms and laundry 4 stars, but it had the most socialable and pleasant atmosphere of any marina we have visited. Since atmosphere depends on the other boaters, this would not extend to the summer months. However, this was our 6th winter on the boat in the South and Dockside made it the best.

LAID BACK IS THE OPERATIVE WORD HERE, 2012-03-19
Captain: , East Falmouth, MA (1533)

On the negative side, the heads and showers (only 2) are in need of remodeling. They are small, old and shared with the bar/rest. After spending 3 weeks here you get so laid back you don't even notice. We showered on the boat and used the head on the boat. For $5 they pump you out once a week. The harbormaster, Roy, is very friendly and very helpful. The docks are fixed and are OK. They could use an upgrade, but they fit in with the laid back life here. The other boaters are also very friendly and helpful. Every Tues, we had a pot luck supper, almost every night a sundown gathering, twice a week a prime rib special at the rest. The service is laid back (read slow) but the food was good. If you are looking for Ocean Reef, this is not your place, but if you want a really friendly and fun place to stay and unwind, this is it. It is also close to Publix, BoA, Winn Dixie, CVS, Walgreen, and Home Depot as well as lots of restaurants.

Needs some work, 2012-02-12
Captain: , Fort Myers (749)

While Sombrero is probably in the best location in Marathon, the marina is in need of a facelift. The shower/restroom/laundry facilities are pretty shabby. The restaurant and bar is nice to have nearby however if you are docked near the bandstand, the noise can be a real distraction.

The dockmaster is very nice as well as the people who choose to stay there. A very nice community. If they spent a few dollars on facility upgrades, this would rate a 5.

Good friendly marina, 2012-01-13
Captain: , Mullica Hill, NJ (688)

The only downside is the heads and showers - they are awkward and in poor condition - but kept quite clean. Roy (the dockmaster) is very helpful. Pumpouts once a week at your dock and lots of friendly boaters. The bar and restaurant are under new management with the same excellent cook as last year. There is now a full staff so service is now up to par.

good solid docks, 2012-01-08
Captain: , Central Illinois (497)

Roy, the dockmaster was very friendly and helpful. Docks are solid and in good shape. no problem with my 17 ft beam.

Good food at great price, 2012-01-04
Captain: , Ocean Springs MS (1063)

We heard about a special via the Cruisers' Net and came in to take advantage and for $17 got a huge serving of very nicely done prime rib with sides, it was a great deal. Service a bit slow but friendly, dock is a bit dicey but accessible just fine.

Great Tiki Bar, 2011-10-17
Captain: , Boynton Beach, FL (254)

Have stopped here several times. Good food and live entertainment. Dock hard to reach during low tide. Worth the stop.

not sure about this place, 2011-08-04
Captain: , ft myers beach (790)

We originally had reservations for our group here. My wife and I attended a convention in Key Largo by car prior to our boat trip, so we drove down to check out the facilities. Docks need work, bar and restaurant are pretty long in the tooth. Heads, laundry facilities below par and not clean. I am sure prices are low, but we chose to go to Marathon Marina and pay a little more. We love dives, but this was... We also had friends stay there in July who were very dissapointed too.

Sombrero Marina, 2011-07-15
Captain: , Pensacola (449)

This is our second stay at Sombrero and we have found it to have the best rates and most convenient location for provisioning. The slips are nice and Roy and Rick are most accommodating. This was a short stay and we never made it to the restaurant and bar that are now open, so we can't comment on them.

Docksides is Open Again!, 2011-03-21
Captain: , Annapolis (1465)

Docksides reopened last week.

Dock side bar and Restauant, 2011-03-17
Captain: , Cincinnati (1810)

The food is very good but there is NO service to speak of. The ownership needs to hire some waiters and he would have a gold mine. The entertainment was good also. It took 15 minutes of standing in line to get a beer. We will not be visiting this place agaain. Don't know about the marina because I could not get a slip, they were full.

Dockside Is Open!, 2011-03-05
Captain: , New Rochelle, NY (1000)

The bar is now open along with the usual cast of characters and great entertainment. The restaurant will be opening soon. This is my 2nd winter here and Roy and Rick are still working their magic keeping everyone happy.

teqia mockingbird capt ed, 2011-03-03

roy and rick do a good job and we've had a good winter with many fine people. bar is open and restaurant is opening next week I am told

Sombrero Dockside Marina, 2011-01-31
Captain: , Jacksonville, FL (822)

Excellent Marina, well protected. Roy does a great job accommodating slip request.

Dockside Opening, 2010-12-29
Captain: , Marathon, Fl (67)

With any luck, the Restaurant/Bar should be open for business by February of 2011.

Good place in the Keys, 2010-12-28
Captain: , Kemah, TX (188)

Great group of people and owner (Rick). The dockside lounge is closed and has been since October. They have OK showers and restrooms in the back of the lounge. The transient price for December 2010 is $1.75/ft which is much lower than other places in the Keys. They will give you even better rates for weekly and monthly. Publix, Winn Dixie, Home Depot and K Mart within walking distance. We rode out two "gale force winds" episodes without any problems. Would give a five stars if the bathrooms were upgraded.

Shut Down for good?, 2010-12-22
Captain: , Isle of Hope, GA (48)

As of Mid December the Dockside Lounge is shut down until further notice. This was a colorful spot.

Great Bar, 2010-09-01
Captain: , New Port, RI (134)

Marina dockage is ok and the bar is a lot of fun but be prepared for a lot of noise. Private golf course across the street that will accept reciprocals.

live music every night, good cast of locals, stiff drinks

Best location inside Boot Key Harbor, 2010-04-19
Captain: , Dallas Tx (539)

The locals know the marina as 'Dockside'. Friendly staff, but facilities leave a lot to be desired. Great local musicians every night. This is a low-key, kick back marina in a great location, Marathon, which is Cruisers Central.

Love the view, 2009-05-28
Captain: , Tampa Bay (322)

Great place just to hang out

Febuary 2009 Dockside review, 2009-02-28
Captain: , Maryland Yacht Club, Pasadena Md (81)

We stayed for 3 weeks and had a wonderful time, Very convient to Publix, K-mart, and most of Marathon. Sombrero Beach is a nice 2 mile walk. Dog frinedly, you can even take your pooch to the resturant. We will be back next year.

Sombero Dockside, 2008-03-13
Captain: , Georgetown, Maine (144)

Friendly folks, weekly pumpouts (you are billed a minimal amount for each), cable tv.
Nightly entertainment is local, good.
