Reviews for Snead Island Boat Works
Fine boat yard, professional experience, 2017-03-16
Captain: , Guntersville, AL (63)

Brought in a 52ft yacht for pre-purchase survey and haul-out. One of the largest capacity travel lifts in the area. The problem was the difficult approach: narrow entrance and it takes some skilled maneuvering to get into the cradle. Might be a bit of an issue maneuvering in a blow. The day we were there, a yacht with a long bowsprit extended out into the approach to the travel lift: kind of bad planning. Overall professional and good-natured staff.

Everyone at Snead Island was amazing. We had our sailboat delivered by truck and spent almost a week at their facility. It is more of a boatyard but they do have slips available. We really enjoyed our visit and hope to return in the future. Professional and very friendly service.

Best boatyard EVER!, 2015-07-29

We've owned a variety of sailboats over the past 25 years and have gone through ALOT of bottom jobs and consequently have experience with many boatyards. Hands down, our experience at Snead Island Boat Works was superior by far from any other. They hauled our 46' Leopard catamaran about 18 months ago and made a few repairs and did a complete bottom job. The work was excellent, finished on time, cost exactly what they said it would, and they maintained constant communication with us throughout the process sending pictures and info (unsolictied by us) so we always knew what was going on. When we arrived to pick up the boat it was cleaner than when we left it with them. Everyone we dealt with at Snead island Boat Works was professional, courteous and helpful. After years of disastrous and frustrating boatyard experiences, we could hardly believe our good fortune. Even though we are located in the panhandle of Florida, we plan to deliver our boat to Bradenton sometime this coming winter so needed boatwork and haulout will be done once again at Snead Island Boat Works.

While this facility has very high marks you need to be very concerned as to the way they operate. I find no fault with the workmanship of the yard personnel and anyone can be comfortable with them. My problem was that I was having a bottom job done along with unstepping the mast to inspect. When the vessel was blocked it was found that the keel was in fact slightly loose and should be removed and reattached, estimate $2500-3000 depending on difficuties encountered. Beginning corrosion on attach rod so it needed to be cut off, the lead excavated and a couplr screwed on along with a section of rod to replace. Additional cost, of course. No communication, trips to the yard and while at times work was done I never saw any work being performed, it seemed that they worked on it when there was little else going on. That's oK just give due consideration on the bill, again no communication. The bill is $7000 over estimate without a word said and sitting in the yard for over two months. The starter would not turn after splashing, they towed it over to a slip and saent a bill for over $300 for hooking up shore power and a batt charger. I asked for an estimate to look at the starter due to my time constraints and they did not respond. The boat was filthy dirty due to all the foot traffic, work was left unfinished and the aft shower door was knocked off the pivots and deposited on the aft berth. I repaired the starter, got the boat running, and removed it from there, they then sent another bill for over $500 for the time spent getting it started. I have no AC "A" bus, trouble all over the DC circuit and when the boat arrived at the yard the only defect was a single rotary switch that had bad contacts. They have the attitude that communication about spending your money is not required and it matters not how much you spent with them there is more to get. I would suggest a written estimate with the requirement for communication becuase under Florida law there is no recourse. I will not be a returning customer.

Boat Yard & Marina, 2014-01-06

Snead Island Boat Works does excellent work and have very friendly and helpful staff. They also run a marina, which is quiet and has a guard on premises during the evening and weekends. There is also an option to haul out your boat when a significant storm approaches.

True professionals, 2013-08-14
Captain: , Orlando (224)

I recently had my 48%u2019 trawler hauled and the bottom painted (along with a few other tasks) at Snead Island. Every person I communicated with was a true professional. Their advice and recommendations were spot on which is a result of their vast experience. (The person with the least tenure I spoke with was 20 years; the longest%u202650 years!). While they will never be accused of giving their services away, the pricing was fair and well documented. There are some boats stored there (wet slips, covered and on the hard) but their main business seems to be the boatyard. I called before arrival and was met at the haulout bay by 3 people, including Steve (the yard manager).
Note: When approaching the entrance to the facility, be mindful of the cross current than can be present before the opening in their sea wall. Not a problem but it caught me a little off guard on my approach.

If you are looking for a friendly helpful marina with fair prices stop over here for a look-see. I spent time here, and can say the people working here could not be more helpful. I had no difficulty with getting parts, a temporary dock space, or a smile from the helpful staff!

Good Service, 2011-09-16
Captain: , Bradenton, Florida (107)

We've been having our yachts hauled out and serviced at SIBW since 1994 and have always been very pleased with the work. Gary Alderman and his father, Jim, have always gone out of their way to help us. Not inexpensive but, frankly, not many boat-yards are these daze and we've been very happy with the service we've rec'd.
