Additional info:

Plenty of water in the Pagan River except between marks G14 and R18. There the depths in the channel at low time may only be 6 feet at low tide. If you have a deeper draft, time your arrival for high tide when there is an additional 3 feet of depth. Do not cut any corders at low tide as the depths outside the channel may only be one or two feet.

Approaches can become very shallow, particularly at low tide, so stay in the middle of the channel.

Reviews for Smithfield Station Marina
Great Place , 2016-08-29
Captain: , Norfolk, Va. (10)

Good service, good food, clean facility, very helpful. Just a great place overall.

9/17/15 Nice Location, 2015-10-20
Captain: , Fort Pierce City Marina, FL (420)

We had trouble coming and going through the shoaling area withour 54' m/v. Other than that, the Pagan River was beautiful and this marina is a nice destination with a quiet and beautiful view of the marshland. Don't count on help from the marina staff & no fuel. There's a great restaurant here. We took bikes into town and had a nice time. Be sure and see the gallery at the visitor center as well as the museum.

Very nice location with a great restaurant. Note that their is no fuel at this marina.

Nice stop, great restaurant, 2014-10-14
Captain: , Seaford, VA (783)

We did find some shallow spots (6 ft at high tide) on the approach near Red 16, and +/- 3 ft two hours before low tide on the way out. Not much help at the marina, girl on the radio didn't even know port/starboard! We were able to dock ourselves unassisted in the basin at the face dock beside the pool. Currents can be an issue for the slips adjacent to the river, but all is calm in the basin. Dock was next to a highway and bridge, but noise was not a problem.
Not much shopping on site (not even a t-shirt) for the Admirals. Despite those issues, we did enjoy our stay. Pool was nice, bath house was fine, walk to town was easy, and we will return!

Please read this entire review. This is not a cruising destination. We looked forward to this stop on our cruise. I called two weeks in advance for slip reservations. We arrived on Labor Day Sunday to find that this is a popular spot for lunch for small powerboats. Dockage was on a first come basis with kitchen help and wait staff guiding boats in. I was guided into a spot not suitable for my boat. Seems that none of the marina help had shown up for work. Randy, the owner, shows up and wants to accommodate us. The problem was no one was managing dockage and the little boats keep coming. I thanked him for his offer but declined as it might have been hours before we could get situated. Two stars for Randy and staff. Looks like a nice place.

James River Adventure day 4-5, 2014-06-30
Captain: , Portsmouth, VA (430)

Approached the marina on a flood tide arriving at high tide. Brian placed us in front of the hotel office and we had no difficulty in travel or docking. Donna in the hotel, marina check in, provided helpful information about town events for the week end. Bikes were provided to us if needed. Departure was challenging due to wide, terrific help by the staff made it easy. Will return again!!

Wish We could rate it higher, 2014-06-15

Except for the cost, this place is a must stop. Not only for the town, but the marina is first class in every way. Nice pool, staff, etc. The river coming in is shallow at LT, aslow as 4.5 feet, but it really is not an issue since navigation is easy. watch for some fish stakes, etc. at entrance. We stayed three days and did not want to leave. Docking in the basin face dock can be a little tough for longer vessels (over 40') but there is plenty of space, yoou just may ahve to ack out the alley.

Only ate at the restaraunt., 2013-07-29

Food and service was excellent. The facilities are in good shape and look new. Quiet harbpr with many amenities close at hand. You will want for nothing.

Walking Distance To Town, 2013-03-20
Captain: , Richmond, VA (79)

This is a great marina for a weekend trip. The marina is well kept and there are a few on-site shops as well as a nice restaurant. The historic town of smithfield is only a short walk from the marina and offers many shops along it's main street.

What can I say; it's my home port, 2012-09-09
Captain: , Smithfield Station (76)

It's a great little marina. The Pack's (owners) are very accommodating. Be sure to ask for Linda when going to the bar. Also be sure to see Dwain at Nautical Decor while at the station. If you need it, he can get it.

great location, 2012-06-07

great marina and hotel. Had a boat there for 3 yrs and loved it. The restaurant is fantastic and a short walk takes you to Old Smithfield with its shops and cafes.

Great Place, Clean, Shopping and Food!, 2012-03-18
Captain: , Chesapeake, VA (80)

This is one of those places that is made to please the Admiral. Nice and clean. Lots of shopping. Very clean. Restaurant is clean and great menu and even better food. Staff is VERY kind and hospital. Would love to just live here. Can't wait to go back. A must stop if the Admiral (wife) is on board and she wants to do a little shopping.

Great stop shallow at low tide, 2010-06-29
Captain: , Red Wing, MN (384)

Had a nice stay and enjoyed the town which is really trying to preserve the local history and traditions of the area. Left early at low tide and had 4.5 feet of water for a 4.5 foot draft getting off of the tie along dock, lots of mud churned up but at least a very soft bottom

Quite, low key, 2009-08-25
Captain: , Charleston, SC (364)

Nice stop and convenient to historic Smithfield. Food at resturant was a little disapointing based on other reviews I had read; although, we only had lunch so maybe a bad sample. Shore power on inter dock has some problems and we had to limit power. I understand from dock master that power on newer dock is much better.

Great Location & Marina, 2008-09-29
Captain: , Friday Harbor, WA (490)

Nice little town & the marina is freat. Easy run up the river. Great stop to get away from all the noise of Tidewater & Hampton Roads

Overnight at Smithfield, 2008-03-20
Captain: , Norfolk Va (12)

This is a very nice marina, all new, floating docks, large slips can accomadate big power boats and catamarans. Short walk to Historic Smithfield restaraunts and shops. Be prepared for a strong cross current while docking. Hotel/marina restaraunt is very good and will package and menu items for takeout. There was a wedding reception the night we were there and the restaraunt was crowded. We ordered our food, went back to the boat and came back 10 minutes later to pick it all up. It was very nice.

Smithfield Station, 2007-09-30
Captain: , Hampton VA (50)

Smithfield Station is in a great location with well protected waters and floating docks. It offers cable TV, a pool, and friendly people. Boating supplies and pumpout are available on site, and it is a short walk to historic Smithfield. The marina is combined with a restaurant and hotel and is great for boating groups. This is an excellent destination for the weekend or as a home port.
