Reviews for Shields Marina
The Place to Stay in St. Marks, 2017-07-10
Captain: , Fairhope Yacht Club, Fairhope, AL (20)

The staff was very helpful and fiendly. The marina ship's store is excellent, also excellent shower facilities Within walking distance of the marina is a genral store and a decent restaurant.
Slips are ok -- fixed steel and concrete construction, but the narrow finger piers are dangerous and too short.

A big marina - friendly people, 2017-06-18
Captain: , Merritt Island, FL (556)

We stayed here June 15, 2017. The staff was friendly. Within walking distance of the marina is a genral store, and a cafe. The marina ship's store is the best. However, the marina's slips are neither boat friendly, or people friendly. Fixed steel and concrete construction, the narrow finger piers are dangerous. Cross current in slips make getting in and out a bit tricky. Having overcome the challenge of the slip, we did enjoy our stay.

Nice Surprise , 2017-04-18
Captain: , Knife River, Minnesota (80)

Bigger than you think. Good size full service yard. Excellent facilities. Large store with marine supplies . Choice of several restaurants, all within walking distance. $1.00 a foot with power. Caution coming up river Red #36 missing after a storm. It was marking a shoal.

Good stop in St. Marks, 2016-06-25
Captain: , United States (3192)

We rode out a tropical storm here, spending four nights in June, 2016. The marina has a modern ships' store with lots of marine items, snacks, beverages, and more. Staff was generally friendly and helpful.

All that said, I can't give it more than three stars, for several reasons:

1. Slips are cross-ways to the current with no protection at all. So if you have a typical cruising boat, plan to arrive at slack water if you want to get in without drama.

2. Very short finger piers, trapezoidal in shape and very narrow makes boarding challenging.

3. The pilings separating the slips are steel, with no rub protection. We scraped up our rub rails (and the pilings) coming in with a very light current.

4. The marina is closed Mondays without so much as an emergency on-call number. As it happens, the storm hit Monday and I asked several times on Sunday what their storm plan was, who was going to be on-site or on-call, and how to reach someone if we saw or had a problem. They just shrugged. (The storm was bad enough, with much of the town flooding, that the owners were actually on-site most of the day, but no one would say that ahead of time.)

4. The WiFi only works at the store. There is no indoor lounge area, just a few tables and chairs on an outside deck. In the 21st century, at these prices, WiFi should extend to the transient slips. At the very least, a comfortable place should be provided to use the existing WiFi.

All that said, we had a nice stay, the steel pilings were very sturdy for storm tie-up even though we never saw wind, just flooding, and it was convenient to the two restaurants and one mini-mart in town. The ships' store was well stocked and we bought two extra fenders for the storm just in case.

Great Marina for our Group!, 2016-06-03
Captain: , Hernando Beach, PL (30)

Traveled here in May, 2016 with four sailboats and a trawler. Crowded marina, and nearly full, but the staff was great about getting us all into nearby spaces and comfortably settled.
This is a full service marina with great showers, amazing ship's store, and reasonable fuel.
One block from the only real restaurants in town; there's not too much else to do here.
The staff and facilities make this a great stop to rest for a few days.

St. Marks Shields Marina, 2016-05-20
Captain: , Palmer, alaska (20)

A short stop that turned in 5 months. Staff was very accommodating of month to month creeping delay. A quite out of the way place. Fixed piers have weighted lines so boat can move with tides. Great ships store, laundry, and bathrooms. Great burgers at Cooters. Only downside is transportation can be difficult. No nearby rental cars but staff and local boaters do help. Far enough from Gulf to miss weather.

Captain: , St. Augustine, Florida (266)

Great stay, quality marina, staff, amazing ships store. The town isnt much, unless you like stone crabs! I do!! Bath rooms very clean, all in all a nice place, just difficult to do land things as there are no real taxis or rental cars, but the marina personal will do everything they can to help get you somewhere. Stayed 6 wks.
Only reason not a 5 is do to lack of transportation, loaner car.

Worth the time to get there, 2015-12-12

Everyone has a great attitude, the owners even go the extra mile to help. We had a water heater problem and Brett did everything he could to help us solve it.

Excellent spot and great staff, 2015-10-30
Captain: , Venice (650)

We had commitments and decided to leave our boat here for several months (Oct 2015). Brett Shields and staff were very helpful, and facilities are top notch. Very small town but has two restaurants and a quaint grocery store. Excellent transient rates.

It's simply an outstanding marina with knowledgeable and friendly staff!

Nicest personnel I ever met., 2015-06-14
Captain: , Slidell LA (42)

Limited space for transients, however new construction underway. Well managed marina with a very efficient crew. On arrival we were greeted by a very friendly and helpful Fisheries and Wildlife officer. After two day's stay we left with a broad smile on our faces.

This is a very nice marina., 2015-04-01
Captain: , Panacea (107)

It is often chosen due to the fresh water from the river. I'm kinds from this area and have done a lot of exploring here. There are 2 good restaurants, both with live music here, just right outside of the Sheilds Marina property. A dinghy ride up the river (or not if your brave enough), you can make it to Outz TooOyster bar, alsowith local live music and some good swimming and kayaking spots. Of course, this entire area is famous for the excellent fishing.

Great marina and quaint community, 2014-07-18
Captain: , Lizella GA (1826)

I stayed here again this year. Has some really good resturants next door on the river. A little out of the way but is a slice of Florida Pan handle culture. Marina has good selection boat and motor parts and supplies. Freindly and helpful staff. This is a gem I did not expect to find on a small river in a rural community.

40ft motorsailer, 3.5 ft depth, 2013-01-28
Captain: , lenoir city, tn (200)

Well marked channel. Contrary to hearsay, good depth if you stay in the middle. A fuel barge for the power plant works the river frequently.

Marina is new and getting newer. Marina store is hard to believe. As large as a regular sized West Marine with better pricing. We were in a regular slip for a week. Good depth even at low tide. Very little waking from passing boats.

St Marks proper is quaint. A few bars (the Cantina has great burgers and FF) while Miss Joy runs local grocery. She has a few of everything.

Good place for dinghy trips up the St Marks and the Wakulla. Worth the time.

Marina owners and staff friendly and helpful.

Price of slips and fuel $3.79 quite good.

Outstanding Fuel Dock, 2012-06-01
Captain: , Pensacola (142)

Easy approach to fuel dock. Fuel was CLEAN. Diesel pump has two sizes of nozzles. Ask for the low flow if you are having back pressure issues.
Prices were not accurate on the pump. I took on 216 gallons of Diesel and paid $922.00

Great Place, 2012-02-21
Captain: , Port Charlotte FL (221)

St. Marks is a bit out of the way for Loopers and Cruisers but it is definitely worth a stop-over if you have the time. Shields Marina is in great shape. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They have a terrific supply of marine stuff (not quite the same stock a West Marine would have but a close second). The surrounding area is beautiful and the fishing is fantastic. Two local bars/restaurant are just up the street (one has live music starting in late Feb.) and a very small grocery store is just around the corner.

$0.70/foot with power/cable/water. Laundry is a $1.00/wash $1.00/dry.

Showers and bathrooms are in very good shape and kept clean.

friendly helpfull and reasonable, 2012-01-03
Captain: , Earth (561)

there are a few anchorages around, but the forcast was for 35 knots of wind and I just felt better about being in a transient slip. The slip was $0.60/ft so for us in our 25 foot boat it was $16.

the store is very nice and well stocked, and there are a handfull of bars/resturaunts right here.

Newer facility, 2010-11-02
Captain: , Stuart, Fl (435)

Friendly, resonably priced marina. 3 bar/restaurants within a few hundred feet of the marina! Diesel pump was out of commision, so check before assuming they have fuel.

Great place., 2010-07-06
Captain: , Destin, FL (180)

Helpful staff, clean, and cool little "town" couple of restaurant/bars. Beautiful cruise up the river to the marina. Inexpensive compared to South Florida.
