Reviews for Shalimar Yacht Basin and Marina
transients beware!!! from former liveaboard. this is a dump!!!!, 2016-07-25
Captain: , Saint marks (10)

im only leaving one star because thats the loweat you can! for transients its $2/ft either covered or not. not fair to the long term liveaboards. its either 11/ft uncovered or 15/ft covered. not cool.

only thing they have is bathrooms. no laundry, no security, the cameras are there but outdated and not hooked to anything, power is sceptical, from summerged conduit, to reversed polarity to rat chewed wires.

beware!!! the courtesy car is a jeep wrangler that the door doesnt close at all! they advertise all this nice thing but trust me from a former liveaboard, and preveous transient before i choose to stay a few months because they promised to fix items. this place is a dump!!! they demand top dollar and dont provide anything even a dock hand to lend a hand in helping dock even in high winds of 20 knots or more or even just coming in with a large vessel. ive seen yacht owners leave pissed with the cost and experiance.

again, no laundry, security, working cameras, etc. asked for a haul out and three months later i left still with no haul out, or work preformed. they had time to pressure wash some broken concrete drive way and weed eat what little grass there was that isnt really seen. im gone now and will never go back!!!

horrible time, experiance, and this is not worth top dollar. transients beware!!!

Total Hellhole - Avoid at all costs!!, 2016-06-04
Captain: , Virginia (18)

This place should be condemned and I think it's only a matter of time until it is! The docks are wobbly, pilings seem to be totally rotten, and the employees are RUDE! There was no help at all tying up even after 3 phone calls. Took the 'courtesy car' out for 30 min and the owner called asking where the hell we were with it. At night we went to ask the owners a question and they appeared to be high on something - definitely wasn't just booze! My card was also charged for an extra $200 - still trying to get the money back! Total nightmare - cruisers STAY AWAY!!!

Price and experience not a match, 2015-03-15

First a quick rant, why is it impossible to find a quality marina around Fort Walton/Destin?

Ok Shalimar is pretty convenient off of the ICW. The marina has seen better days but I have seen worse. But at $2 a foot plus $10 for electric in the off season I expect a nice marina and/or good service. The marina is basic fixed wood docks with not much else to offer. Now on to the service, we had called in advance and confirmed they would have dockage for us. As we neared the marine we tried to hail them on the VHF, no luck, called from the cell phone, still no luck (this the middle of the afternoon) finally we just tied to the fuel dock and finally found someone. He said he knew nothing about our dockage but said he woud find us a slip. The slip would have been fine if our beam where under 13' but it is not. So after attempting to back in and confirming it was to small, we tracked him down again. This time he called someone and asked what to do. So we got tied up the second time around. Neither time was there ever any help with lines, electric, ETC. Maybe I have been spoiled by all of the high service marinas in Suthwest Florida over the last few months. At the end of the day I can not recommend a place without any kind of value proposition.

Great people. Very friendly and helpful.

fuel pumps out, 2015-02-03
Captain: , Paris Landing TN (636)

tried to get fuel but pumps did not work. dock man made some phone calls but couldnt get anyone to help. had to fuel up using my jerry can and no way to fill it back up. we did get the pump out for free instead of the $5 charge!

Fix and Repair, 2013-12-03
Captain: , Toronto (10)

Excellent service! Helped us with our laundry needs and boat motor maintenance issues! Bruce and Joel are very helpful and most experienced. Given a roof covered slip. Courtesy vehicle is great! Recommend to all Loopers needing service.

Fuel Stop and a warning, 2013-08-04
Captain: , Pensacola at Pelicans Perch Marina (70)

Easy to get to, friendly staff. Looks like it could be a fun overnight until we opted to moor on the candy cane transit area. On approach there were long bolts pretruding from the seawall that would reek havock on a gell coat. BEWARE. You must use large fenders or find somewhere else if you plan on using this to tie up to.

They don't take American Express, 2013-07-03
Captain: , Destin (10)

Don't leave home without another type of credit card because they don't take American Express and you won't know until they have fueled your boat then they want a 10 % surcharge

Easy fuel dock, 2013-01-22
Captain: , Forrest City, AR (11)

Nice bunch of folks. Plenty of depth. May be a little rolly from the north. Get you fenders ready.

Nice folk when you can get them, 2012-11-24
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, Fl (6909)

We stopped for fuel after no contact via phone or vhf. I just pulled up to the fuel dock and someone showed up. Earlier in the day I had spoken with Steve by phone to check fuel price and any discounts not sure if I would stop here. He offerred a volume fuel discount of 10% off with 200+ gals. I think it is a sliding moment to moment discount but worth asking about. Power at $20 a night of 50 amp and $10 for 30 amp is a bit steep. But don't know what the costs at other local marinas is. I was here 5 years ago and it looks as if not much has changed as to upgrades. I didn't check bathrooms or showers so cannot comment on them. Note that this was Thanksgiving weekend black Friday so prehaps folks were shopping.

Friendly owners, 2012-11-13
Captain: , Tampa (190)

The owners work hard to get you to come back. They have a "Yacht Taxi" they will lend you for running around the area. Easy fuel dock and good electric.

Nice old marina, 2012-07-27
Captain: , charleston (761)

In 15 knot winds had hard time docking until dockhands finally arrived to help. Vito is very friendly and helpful as advertised. We were docked on t head of A dock and a long walk to restrooms, etc.

Disappointed, 2012-01-10
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

Yes it is off season, I understand that. I also understand that many marinas have never recovered from Ivan years ago. But Shalimar Marina is not a place I would go back. After making reservations by phone in the morning, we called on the phone 3 times, and on the radio repeatedly, but got no response. We docked ourselves at the end of a T-Head. Facilities were minimal. After all that the owner showed up hours later and still charged us full price. Never again.

Nice and Friendly, 2011-12-02
Captain: , Eglin AFB (150)

Very friendly marina. Easy access, good location, and good staff. The facilities are being updated by new owners and there is always some kind of project under way. they appear to have a solid plan and the marina gets nicer with time. The owners and the staff seem to genuinely like having folks stay there and appreciate their guests.
There are a few areas that need improved and I am sure there are already plans to improve them. There is no wifi or cable tv at the docks. The rest rooms are not heated or air conditioned and can get quite uncomfortable in both hot or cold weather.
The dock master, Vito, is a top notch guy and makes up for a lot of the minor short falls of this facility. There is good parking, the place is in a good neighborhood with groceries, restaraunts, and entertainment nearby and the marina even provides a loaner car to help get supplies and such back with ease. Definitely reccomend stopping here if you have a chance.

Great marina, second time coming. Vito and other employees are very helpful with taking your lines and what ever else you may need. Will come back again and again.

Great stop and friendly staff, 2011-02-12
Captain: , Kemah, TX (188)

This is our second time coming to Shalimar Yacht Basin. Vito, the harbormaster, will take your dock lines out of your hands and tie your boat. He will tell you to "sit down and take a rest". The owners, Steve and wife Paulette treat you like family. The owners and staff will suggest places to eat, shop and hand you the keys to the "yacht taxi". This marina is truly a comfortable stop for boaters. We highly recommend it.

Shalimar Yacht Basin, 2011-01-28
Captain: , Lousianna (47)

This was one of my best port of calls! Down to earth, courtesy car, full service, laundry, family-owned business. First place I ever sat down comfortably with owners; they made me feel like this was my home port! I was under a covered slip, protected me from rain. and the dock master tied us up when we got there and untied us when it was time to go. The marina is in a little town with BIG understandings on what we need.
My recommendation to ANYONE doing the loop or cruisin down to the keys THIS IS the port of call!!!!

Can't wait for summer!, 2011-01-28
Captain: , Virginia Beach (10)

Relatively new to the boating world. Made my call to the marina and was greeted with a genuinely welcoming voice and that set the tone for the rest of my time at shalimar yacht basin. i got to meet the owner and pretty much interact with the whole staff. dock master clued me in about boat life, and it was nice to feel like i wasn't in the way and someone could just sit and talk to me about all the questions i had. during my stay i had to have my boat repaired, and everything was fairly priced and the work was MORE then satisfactory. being a family owned/operated, i really felt i could trust this marina! im looking forward to staying here when i come back to this area for summer and this crab island fun i heard so much about!
Thanks Steve for everything!

Working hard to get your business, 2010-12-11
Captain: , Aquia Harbour, VA (1177)

We were not transients but rather had bottom paint done at the marina. They did a great job, probably the best prep job prior to painting that we have had. We have a very unusual boat and they were very careful in hauling it out. They even phoned the manufacturer to verify hauling procedures for our kind of vessel. They were running a special on bottom paint at the time and the price seemed fair. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, trying to please. We would go back.

Mediocre facility, 2010-03-06
Captain: , Destin, Fl (49)

Cant say I would reccomend this marina or yard. Regular management changes.

Shalimar no Shangri-La, 2009-06-27
Captain: , Anacortes, WA (147)

We stayed here in March 2009. Agree with previous reviewers about pilings, courtesy car, mediocre restrooms.

Small Sailboat Cruising, 2009-05-19
Captain: , Carrabelle (364)

I thought this Marina was overpriced for the facility. They charged an extra $10 for utilities. For a large boat this might be a bargain but for a small sailboat that only requires 110 power to charge GPS and phones, this is a bit high. The bath house was just so so. The courtesy car was a nice perk to get us to a grocery store and a restaurant.

well protected, 2007-11-16
Captain: , Key Largo (5330)

bout 2.5 milesoff the gciw, courtesy car, some docks covered, piling docks.
