Reviews for Shady Harbor Marina
Peaceful setting, 2016-09-25
Captain: , Cape Cod, MA (179)

We returned to Shady Harbor on 9/23 on our way back down the Hudson because we had time and wanted to try the restaurant. Unfortunately I hadn't yet received the Donavan's response to our first review so we missed out on the free beers and meeting Brian and Cathy. The restaurant is first rate - the ambience is great and the food is excellent. I also looked more closely at the inventory of "marine stuff". It's pretty extensive. The dock hands, Tyler, Jansen and Ben, were welcoming, helpful and friendly.

I'm rating this marina as if the restaurant were open. But we arrived on a Tuesday (9/20) and found the end of season restaurant hours to be Wednesday-Sunday. We were really looking forward to a relaxed dinner, but no. And without the restaurant there's squat for an alternative. But, indeed, the restaurant looks lovely. Docks in good shape. Nice, clean and a/c'd shower with even a bath mat. The on-site store looks like it stocks a good selection of marine stuff, as well as various food items (which were pretty well depleted when we were there). Deckhands and staff friendly and helpful. A very peaceful marina from which you can enjoy the sight, against a bucolic background, of large barges and tugs gliding by with a fascinating variety of cargo.

Management response:
Dr J.,

Thank you for the kind words and I am truly sorry that you missed a meal at our restaurant. It is truly a special place and I hope you venture this way again to try some of chef Brian's treats. If you do, the world famous little beers are on me. It is a tough decision to go to the fall hours, but unfortunately it is necessary, as the employee and customer levels begin to dwindle down. I am sorry I was not on property as I would have opened up the place and at least make you a pizza and a cocktail. That is the extent of my culinary talents. Thank you for the kind words on the rest of our facility, your experience described is exactly what we hope every guest experiences. Safe travels this winter and who knows, corporate Approved may cross your path. - Brian and Kathy Donovan

Great place!, 2016-09-05
Captain: , coeymans landing, ny (21)

Even though we keep Courageous at the next marina to the north we rate Shady Harbor a 5! Everything about this place is great. Plus we almost always see eagles across the river on Houghtaling many as 5 at once.

Management response:
Captain Terryble,

thanks for the kind words, we do appreciate them. We work hand in hand with all marine facilities to take care of the boaters traveling through, or living in our part of the world. The Hudson has the best, most caring facilities and people on the river.

A great place to stop on the Hudson, 2016-08-26
Captain: , Stamford, CT (40)

A nice stop on the Hudson for anyone going north to the canal or for those traveling down towards NYC. The staff is very professional and accommodating.. They have both gas and diesel fuel as well as pump out. A good restaurant onsite, a pool, gas bbq grills and full service ships store. All and all a nice stop to relax enjoy the Hudson.

7/21/16 Stayed one night here. Very nice marina with a nice pool, store and restaurant. Staff was very helpful with pump out and docking. We watched eagles fly by from our flybridge in our slip.

This is a Must Stop, 2016-07-26
Captain: , Pensacola Fl (80)

The facility, staff, and atmosphere here is great. They go out of their way to help the visiters. Marina store has hundreds of important items, very well stocked. swimming pool. they have easy access to fuel and pump out. floating docks are new and there is a repair facility here with 40 ton marine travel lift

Management response:

Thank you for the kind words. I was so disappointed missing you the other morning. A UPS delivery snafu got me back to the marina an hour after you left. I wanted to speak with you, as the trip your father and you are taking is quite cool. as a Hatteras owner I wanted to check out your boat. It is very cool that a young man has put such a nice boat on the water and is taking the Loop at the right age, not the normal age. Have fun, be safe, and if you need any help along the way feel free to call.

Captain: , Charleston, SC (180)

Brian and Cathy have redefined customer service. Every need for every customer is a priority. The caring attitude transcends the staff as well. From the time we tied up to departure, everyone engaged us with a friendly smile and an inquiry about our needs. We ate nearly every meal at their restaurant due to the excellent food. Cathy (aka Corporate) was Maitre d' the entire time. Brian supervised service and marrina. We required a haul out to inspect our bottom. Noticed a $3 part was missing. Although none were available in the area, an employee took the initiative to fabricate a replacement is less than 15 minutes. A must stop.

Captain: , Hilton Head Island (40)

Everyone who works at this Marina were helpful, knowledgable and courteous in every way. We had to dock in miserable weather and they had all hands on deck. The restaurant is great, facilities too.

Thanks to all of you Shady Harbor is here, strong, and ready to serve for years to come., 2016-06-01
Captain: , New Baltimore, New York (98)

2016 is upon us, and once again we are so thankful for all the boaters that stop and enjoy our facility. This year we have further upgraded our electrical grid on the dock. i plan on keeping my promise of never having to reset a breaker during the season. three years running now and stronger than ever.

Additional projects are an event tent next to the restaurant, along with a nice landscaping project, and the fountain project. make sure you ask about that when you visit. We are also adding an indoor pickle ball court, and ping pong tables for those rainy days. So stop in, enjoy what we have to offer, and as always, we look forward to your constructive opinions. Have a great season everybody, hope we see you. Brian and Kathy.

Words cannot say how thankful we are for all the boaters kind words. Now Mid way through our fifth season, you have made us the facility we knew we could be. i assure you we do not rest on our Laurels, whether the marina, or the Boathouse grille, we are commited to making it the five star facility it has become. Thank you all on this great rainy Fourth of july. Happy fourth and little beers for all.
Now we have survived our second season, and our second Hurricane. That makes us two for two. The 2013 season is upon us and many more improvements are on the way. Including but not limited too, more new docks, a completely revamped, remodeled Restaurant, remodeled and Air conditioned Bath house, new sidewalks, and landscaping. Bocce, horseshoes, and volletball will be available by mid season. We can't thank our customers enough for the fabulous reviews, that means more than anything. The only thing we like hearing more than the positive is the little things we can improve on, we will always listen good and bad. We look forward to your visits and comments for 2013, this is a great marina, with great people. Period. Remeber, the only thing better than 2013 is 2014.

Brian and Kathy Donovan- 2013

Well, we have survived our first season. We are well on our way to being the great facility we know we have. I want to thank everyone who was part of our inaugeral season. We will be open and serving boaters through November. Many plans are in place to make 2012 a much better season than 2011, so once again, thank you to all and we look forward to serving you for many years to come.See you at Shady Harbor 518-756-8001

Exceptional Place, 2016-06-01
Captain: , Wilmington,NC (230)

Everything was great here; everyone made you feel at home from the dock hands to the owner. Nice pool, easy dockage, fuel and free pump out. The restaurant was amazing- we had eaten at the Culinary Institute the previous night and I can honestly say that this was much better. The head chef, Brian, greeted us as we entered the restaurant and made us two fantastic meals. The bartender, Tim, made some special drinks that were delicious. These people know how to take care of transient boaters.

An unforgettable experience, 2015-10-05
Captain: , Michigan City, IN, USA (150)

We stopped at Donovan’s Shady Harbor Marina to take refuge from a large/severe storm – strong north wind and fast river current. We were unfamiliar with the marina layout. As we approached the dock there were two dock hands waiting to help us tie up – that was a nice start to a fabulous stay. We decided to take advantage of their weekly transient rate because of Hurricane Joaquin possibly coming this way. The wifi is strong at the dock, the entire property is clean and attractive, bathrooms very clean, two washers and two dryers, well stocked marine store. The best part is the people – everyone was kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. I needed to borrow some tools for small repairs – no problem – one of the techs brought them to our boat. Everything I needed for repairs was found in the marina store. My impression of Brian (the owner) is this – an interesting man who possesses a lot of boat knowledge and will go out of his way to help out a fellow boater. The marina restaurant is an experience unto itself – a beautiful view of the Hudson River, excellent service, excellent meals, full bar, big screen tv’s, fireplace, the chef (Brian – not the owner) wants your experience to be unforgettable – and ours was a memory that we will have forever. Sounds like we really love this place – and we do! The weather cleared after a few days, but we decided to stay five days because this feels like home – there was no problem getting a refund because we paid for one week but stayed just five days. We would definitely stay here again. This place is truly a gem along the Hudson!

The reviews don't lie. If you are running up The Hudson, don't even think about running those last 13 miles to Albany. The attention to detail, the food, the fuel prices, and the warm and genuine reception you will get here will make you feel like a member of the family. Did I mention the free wifi with a signal strong enough to actually use while on your boat? A Top 10 Marina in the USA!

Great dock staff, great facilities, 2015-08-29
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (6425)

July 2013. First, we received fast vhf radio reponse from the marina. Then two dock staff helped to take our lines and secure us to the dock. They did great job, didn't have to change a single hitch. Shady Harbor is a great stop, very peaceful location. Pool, covered picnic tables, propane grills, fully stocked ship's store, courtesy vehicle, very nice restaurant on site. Only thing lacking would be grocery within walking/bicycle distance.

August 2015, this was our second visit to Shady Harbor. Dock staff just as good if not better. Answered phones & vhf promptly. Help getting to pump out dock, then to our slip. Very well maintined docks and grounds.

Management response:

Captain Ron,

That's just too funny:)

Thank you for your kind words, that is the experience we are striving for. I always tell my staff your not successful till you do it right twice. Your review states just that, and for sure I will share that with my staff when we meet later today over some other issues.

Safe travels,

Brian Donovan

NO Provisions for us disappointed, 2015-08-29
Captain: , Texas (130)

we stopped because we needed provisions and canal permit. There was NO car as advertised. they were under staffed so no ride into town either, fuel was more expensive than we saw closer New York. deck hand were great and it was clean. I wish we would have gone on to Troy. oh wait hats off to the chef the food was fabulous ... but my mojito had brown wilted mint... so keep going is my recommendation but it was clean

Management response:

First and formost let me apologize on behalf of myself, my family, and my staff! We work tirelessly to insure your stay is a five star experience everytime, we shall certainly use your visit to insure it won't happen again. I would like to reach out to you personally to learn the details of your experience and will do so in seperate cover.

It is true that we no longer have a courtesy car, a customer last year got in a minor fender bender with our beloved 1/2 car. This seemingly harmless event started a spiralling nightmare with our insurance company and the state of New York. Unknown to me we can not let any non employee operate a company car for any reason. We were faced with fines and cancellation of our insurance on the whole marina if we continued the process of allowing boaters to use our car. We are working on a plan to allow you to rent a car for a nominal fee through third party registration but that will not happen till next season. We will for sure update our marker to reflect the lack of loaner car. Our apologies on that oversight.

We have gone out of our way to make rides available, and our property staffing including the restaurant excceds 15 people during the hours of operations of any business in the area. It was a communication error on our part that lead to your prime dissapointment. I assure you this has been resolved. Rides for all are available!

In regards to fuel pricing, we do not get fuel locally, we insist on VALVETEC fuel as I have had good experience as a boater with this product. Unfortunately we have to truck this in from Massachusetts, as we do not have a local distributor. We keep our margins thin on fuel and are competitive with local operations. New Jersey by far has the best fuel prices, in the spring when I brought my boat north from Florida, NYS represented the highest fuel prices than any previous state i traveled through.

Thank you for your comments on our chef, he and his staff work incredibly hard to put out a quality product in a seasonal restaurant. As far as the aged Mint, no excuse, mint has a very short shelf life and my staff needs to be vigilent constantly.

The City of Troy has a terrific opportunity for it's waterfront. There is multi million dollar project underway to bring the waterfront to it's former glory. Currently however boaters should know the docks there are old and patched together from what they could salvage from the effects of superstorm Irene. There is no power or basic services, they do have fuel. They also have two nice young men who do a great job. Once the Renovations take place in 2016/17 it will for sure be a great stop for all boaters.

Thank you for your honest interpretation of your experience, I only wish I had met you during your visit, I would have corrected your issues myself immediatly.

Great spot to get your canal pass- friendly folks, 2015-08-14
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (42)

We really enjoyed our stay here. Very good food at the restaurant and the staff was such a pleasure. Local shopping is very good and not far from the marina. Would recommend highly to others on their way up to the canal.

Good spot to stop before Erie Canal when heading north, 2015-07-06
Captain: , Sarasota, FL (60)

Modern marine with excellent new docks. Fuel is a bit expensive so if you don't need, wait. Good restraurant, a nice picnic, BBQ area. New Baltimure is difficult to access as it is uphill from the marina. The ships' store has a few supplies and you can get your canal pass here. Owner is very supportive of loopers and has many plans to continue improving and expanding. Laundry on site, showers and bathrooms clean and easy to access. Only negative is that we paid the hourly rate of $90 when a dock hand looked at a plumping problem in our head, took something apart but then did not have the supplies to fix it and put it back together again leaving us with the original problem. Oh well - easy come, easy go.

Wonderful place!, 2015-07-03
Captain: , Sodus Point, NY (50)

This place is a gem. They have modern docks and service, a store at the end of the dock, a service department and pool. The staff is very friendly and helpful even the guetst are nice, say hello to Brian. Fuel is very reasonable with a discount for volume sales. I highly reccomend a visit.

Exceptional service !, 2015-07-01
Captain: , Toronto (33)

Last week I delivered a boat from Beaufort NC to Toronto. Last Sunday afternoon I hit a log in the Hudson River and damaged one prop. I pulled in to Shady Harbour Marina, New Baltimore, NY.

We were greeted by Brian Donovan (owner and very happy fella). Brian had us lifted at 0700 next morning, repaired the prop and had us back in the water by 1600hrs. for a very reasonable price. Brian, wife Kathy and various family members run the place and you will rarely meet such a group of happy, personable people with a solid respect for customer service.

The floating docks are modern, solid and clean as is the entire facility including the pool. They are a full service marina with gas, diesel, marine store and a superb restaurant .... try the "drunken duck" pizza ! With over 24,000hrs in my log book, I have never experienced such friendly, efficient service.

Well-run and well-kept marina, 2015-06-27
Captain: , Iuka, MS (1120)

Capable dockhands, fair fuel prices, courtesy ride to town for provisioning. Right on the river, so easy in-and-out, but little protection from weather or wake of passing boats who disregard the no-wake zone. Pool wasn't yet open when we came through in mid-May.

Management response:
Mr. Ertz,

I would like to thank you for your kind words and accurate observations. Like many marina's we are subject to the challenges of both mother nature and ignorant boaters. Your comments on the exposure to weather is accurate for the time of year you visited.

We have been the owners of this wonderful place for five seasons now. I have noticed that April into the first half of May brings strong south winds that can be uncomfortable. You should know that the engineering in our anchoring system has proven time and time again to provide strong safe holding power. The vast majority of the season we have predominently NorthWest winds that skip right over the property due to the protection of the 110' rock cliff that borders our property. The boat wakes you speak of come primarily from transport captains and tug boat drivers. The majority of the transport captains also come through the beginning of May as they ferry customers boats to the mid west for the upcoming season. we have also seen an increase of uncaring tug operators. With many of the components for the new Tappenzee bridge coming from what has become a very busy, noisy industrial port in coeymans, two miles up the river. The local tugs know the rules, and respect our marina. The new guys from the city have required some training into how things work upstate. with cooperation from the Port and local law enforcement we have settled the wakes that you speak of.

I'm sorry the pool was not open for your visit. Under the laws of New York State we are permitted to having the pool open from memorial day weekend through labor day weekend. The pool must be inspected by the state before we can open and therefore it was not open when you visited. just an FYI, it would have been way to cold for you at that time of year.

Thanks again for the time to comment and we look forward to another visit when you pass this way again.

Fantastic Marina, 2015-05-31
Captain: , XYZ (42)

We ran a boat from Somerset Mass to Albany over two weeks, marina hopping every night. This was one of our favorite marinas. Stiff wind on our arrival but the dock team (three guys) brought us in, tried our lines neatly, connected the services, and even offered a cable TV hookup. Caters to very nice, large, high end boats, but the price was still very reasonable. Restaurant had a beautiful river view on the large deck and the food and drinks were excellent, first rate. Even wines by the bottle were so well priced they almost matched wine store retail. Large clean bathrooms, showers and laundry for $1.00 in quarters, very nice pool, and some of the docks were brand new with new service pedestals. Well stocked marine store -- our shore water pressure regulator/check valve stopped working and the stocked a matching replacement. Nice location directly on the river, no threading our way through a creek like Kingston for example. Very dog friendly, that was fun. This was a perfect last night for our long trip. The owner even stopped by to talk with us on our aft deck. One of the best marinas of the trip. If they can kep up this level of service this could be one of the top marinas on the upper Hudson. We stayed at Shady Harbor during our voyage from North Carolina to Canada. I cannot say enough about how great all of the Brian's are. From the initial call in for a reservation to the drive into town to pick up more supplies and then the great dinner and evening cocktails.
Make sure to order a little beer, they will be world famous.

Thanks Brian and Jody for running a great marina.

We stay at many marinas and Shady Harbor ranks right at the top. All the amenities are first class and everything is kept clean and neat. The Boathouse restaurant is excellent and Exec. Chef Brian takes the time to make sure that everyone is pleased with their meals. The members are very friendly and we look forward to visiting this great spot once again.

Did the 3-for-2 deal. Shawn helped us fix a knotty plumbing problem. Restaurant is a convenient amenity. If you order the right things, it can be outstanding - we'd stick with the pasta entrees. Marina is in very good repair. One of everything is in town of Revena - courtesy car a big plus.

Thanks Shady !, 2014-08-08
Captain: , Chazy, NY (10)

We stopped at Shady because we hit a log and kinked a propeller on the Hudson, on our way to Sandy Hook.
We found people very welcoming at Shady. They hauled out the boat, found a place (Precision) to correct the propellers and Shawn (the young mechanic but oh such a hard working guy) succeeded to change one of our motor water pump that was leaking (on a motor that had over heated).
Thanks for Shawn's perseverance who had to change the pump twice (the first "new" was leaking too) and enabled us to have a nice holiday on Sandy Hook.
The courtesy car at Shady is a great idea and also the pool, two very appreciated services.

Wonderful Facility, 2014-08-02
Captain: , Ottawa (303)

Picked up a stick in our bow thruster on the way into the dock. Ended up staying a week (July 10 2014) getting parts and a repair done. Thanks to Chuck and Sean for being on top of everything. They took care to make sure we were looked after. Loaned us a car for shopping. Great walking trails. Restaurant was excellent and busy with locals and travelers by car. Never a dull moment watching the comings and goings at a marina fuel dock :)

Pleasant stop, 2014-07-05
Captain: , Rochester NY (310)

Very nice marina with great dock hands to help you tie up. Marine store is well equiped and they have a loaner car you can use to get groceries. Boathouse restaurant got great reviews but it was a letdown for us. Food was rushed and at one point we had appetizer, salad and entree all at the same time.

Escellent Stop, 2014-06-25

As friendly and accomodating staff as any marina we have been to. They met every request with a smile and a desire to overachieve. Nice docks, nice facility, very clean, surprisingly well stocked ships store and the Boathouse Restaurant provided us with two great dinners. The only negative was that the phone reception was a bit spotty in various spots on the gournds.

Great facility, friendly helpfull staff, 2014-06-19
Captain: , Fort Myers Beach, FL (361)

This marina is very nice. The staff is very helpfull and friendly. The docks are newer floating docks with long fingers and nice electrical pedistals with cable TV.
They have a courtesy car and gave us a ride "uptown" when the car wasn't available. A car is necessary to leave the marina as there are very steep hills to exit. Bicycling would be very difficult here.
They want your business and are very accommodating.

From the time we pulled up to the dock at 6:30pm we had a great two night stay.
Our arch was lowered the pool was great the laundry facilities although limited were excellent, the loaner car was new and very roadworthy and the restaurant was awesome.

The cable TV and wifi even worked as promised.

In my humble opinion forget Cooyman's, you'll probably scrape your bottom! Better to go to Shady Harbor. The people are friendlier, the facilities are top notch, and service is outstanding. They are willing to help boaters, big or small, rich or not.

On route diesel $4.47 less .10 Boat US with free water and pump out. We took out the food which was absolutely delicious to consume while we traveled. Service is excellent. They answer the phones, see you coming, provide good direction, and are very accomodating.

The prior post sums it all up. We were here for 2 nights (10/11 May 2014) and had a great time. Brian is the owner and was great in getting us slid into position. Dock staff was good. Rates are $2.50 a foot + electric. Diesel is $4.47 with a 10cent discount for BoatUS. Everyone is super friendly and helpful.

Brand new dock on the South Fuel dock. Other docks in great shape. They were assembling the new North dock while we were there.

Fully stocked boat store with a small grocery section. They lent us a car (the half-car) to drive into town (10 min drive to supermarket in town.)

The Boathouse Restaurant on site is FABULOUS! Seafood, steaks, pasta, pizza. Nice menu, great service. Eat inside or outside on the giant deck. We had lunch and dinner there. Eat the Mussles
Fra Diavolo, they rocked!

Super happy, would consider scrapping the Great Loop and staying here. It makes a great jumping off point for the Erie Canal 18 miles up river.

Captain: , Milwaukee, WI (10)

Our bow thruster went out at Cape May, and we were looking for a mechanic to repair it. Two other mechanics were too busy, but Brian said come on in and they would take care of it right away. Brian was on the job fifteen minutes after we arrived at seven PM. He had his mechanics, Shawn and Chuck, working on the thruster at 8:30 the next morning. They identified the problem as a reversing switch burnout, and ordered the correct part before noon, to be shipped overnight. Shawn meticulously labeled and photographed everything that he did. The part arrived the next day, and Shawn correctly installed it. The thruster didn't work! After an hour of hysteria, I sent everyone home to sleep on it.

At 7:00 the next morning Shawn looked at his picture of the new part, and zooimed in on the part number. The factory had sent a 24V unit instead of a 12V unit, in spite of having the right part number. Another overnight shipment and we were operational. That photo saved countless hours of testing and frustration.

Brian and his lovely wife Cathy were most helpful and cordial. The restaurant meal was outstanding. A top facility.

A place you should never pass by. The best on the Hudson., 2014-05-04
Captain: , Louisville Kentucky (204)

Due to the delay in the 2014 season opening of the canal we laid over in Shady Harbor for almost a week. Kathy and Brian (the owners) were some of the most hospitable river people you could meet. Everything you could want from a marina is here. World class staff spent every day making sure we were happy and all our needs were taken care of.

A great maintenance staff took care of needed oil change and even found and fixed few things we did not know about but really did need and they found some issues that they recommended “ no need to fix or replace but just watch them”, it is really refreshing to not have a hard sell around every turn.

The restaurant and bar is super clean and they have a young but truly world class chef (Brian) that will provide you dinners fit for a New York City 5 star restaurant. Try the lobster ravioli with shrimp OMG what a dish. Also the Beer batter fried hamburgers are to die for. Super reasonable prices on both the food and drinks. You can set at the bar in the restaurant or out on the large covered deck and enjoy yourself into the night.

Very clean bathrooms, showers and laundry along with a small picnic park with grills for cook outs. Also a fenced in pool for relaxing for a while in the sun.

In all it takes me a lot to write a good review but this place delivers everything you need and more I will never pass up Shady Harbor again, because now I feel like they are family.

Thanks to Brian, Kathy and all your staff you are the best!

Traveling up the Hudson River we encountered a charging problem on our boat. As luck would have it the next marina was Shady Harbor Marina in New Baltimore. The owner (Brian) went out of his way to help us out. He found us the part we needed and had his mechanic trouble shoot and repair our problem. We stayed the night to get a fresh start in the morning. The restaurant and bar is great. Happy hour pizza and wing specials were outstanding. The food at the restaurant looked and smelled wonderful. Prices were great for the food and the mechanics service. I can honestly say if we had broken down anywhere else along our journey we would still probably be there. If you are in the area this would be a great destination. Gas, pump out, nice docks, mechanic service, food, ship store and most of all a friendly inviting atmosphere from all who work there.

We arrived ~5:30pm, just as the facility was closing. Shawn, greated us, assisted with securing the boat, then proceeded to inform us of the marinas offerings. He was extremely helpful.
The following day, I had the opportunity to meet Cory, who assisted with fueling and waste pumpout. Both staff members exceeded my expectations and were a pleaseure to meet.

The pool, laundry/bath area were exceptionally well cared for as was the entire marina.
Having a car available to get into town was a great asset.
Well done job!

From the first contact, with Kim to arrange a slip for the night, to the welcom dockside by Shawn and the very competent line handling, this place was very impressive. And as icing, their marine store had just what I needed in terms of a sanitaion hose and clamps, oil filters and even cocktail nuts, all critical items for long range cruisers like us. This place is one of the nicest and friendliest marinas we have stayed at this season.

We spent 3 nights at this great Place. Started out with Derek doing a great job with some great VHF instructions getting on the fuel dock with current on the stern and wind on the bow. Little tight but worked out GREAT! Cory was a valuable asset helping with the refueling process and handling lines at the assigned slip. When the owner Brian Donovan comes down at 0630 to help you with your dock lines that is a total commitment to customer satisfaction at Donovans Shady Harbor Marina. Top notch Restaurant, comfortable, great menu and super service. A place we would definitely come back to. Thanks to all at Shady Harbor Marina for a great stay.

Excellent, friendly marina. , 2013-07-29
Captain: , North Carolina (344)

We were here just short of a month waiting for the Erie Canal to open.

Marina has a small store with some basic supplies, marine supplies and "gifty" items.

Grounds are pretty, well kept and clean. Staff is friendly and helpful.

We couldn't have asked for a better place to wait out the canal opening.

Stuck in Shady Harbor..., 2013-07-23
Captain: , Castine, Maine (2964)

We pulled into Shady Harbor Marina in mid June with a plan. We would rent a car drive back to Maine for a few days to pick up a new four-legged crew member, return to the boat and head to the Erie Canal. Getting a car rental from Albany was easy. We were very comfortable leaving the boat and returned on schedule. That's where the plan derailed.

We returned to the boat just as the storms began and long story, short, we didn't leave until almost 6 weeks later. If we had to be stuck, I can't think of a better place.

Brian and Kathy have done a terrific job renovating the facilities. They are gradually replacing the older docks with state of the art ones. The restaurant and bar are wonderful - ask about the "little beers". The grounds are pretty. There's a pool, nice bathhouse with laundry, and a marine store with a bit of everything. There were plenty of places to have nightly docktails with the other stranded boaters whether under the tent by the pool or in the Adirondack chairs under the trees. There's a courtesy car to run to the nearby grocery or into Albany. We truly enjoyed our time here.

But the best part was the staff who was always smiling and courteous and ready to help with whatever you needed. We look forward to coming back. Do not miss this stop.

great stop on the northern Hudson, 2013-07-17
Captain: , Cleveland, OH (140)

Waiting for news of the opening of Erie Canal was no hardship while docked at Shady Harbor. The facilities are beautiful, clean, and well maintained. The staff was outstanding, courteous and available. It's the first marina that staff would make a pass on the docks or at the pool to ask if there was anything we needed. The courtesy car was a plus to make a provision run into town. While we were there other loopers met in the evening at 5:00 to share news and loop stories. We met lovely local boaters who were anxious to hear of our travels and were proud of their marina . Thanks to all !

We stayed here just a few days short of a month waiting for Erie Canal to open. Staff is the very good part of this marina. Friendly, courteous, helpful... Pool, chairs overlooking Hudson with breeze, "half car" loaner available, marina shows many improvements done by new owner over past few years with more in he plans. Had some mechanical fixes done at reasonable prices. Would stay again if in area!

we arrived on a 94 degree day and the pool was delightful. Brian and staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Very pet friendly. new docks were great and the marina has a lot of lounge chairs under shade trees. The restaurant is good and the loaner care made provisioning easy. There is a grocery, NAPA auto and Hardware store nearby. We bought our canal passes in the marina store and prepped the boats for the canal trip.

Captain: , Beaufort, S.C. (570)

We are staying at Shady Harbor with a number of other boats waiting for the Erie Canal to open. The marina is a good staging place. It is has nicely maintained grounds with chairs sprinkled around the property to read a book or watch the barges go down the river. The pool has plenty of comfortable seating and there is a covered picnic area for gatherings. The onsite restaurant, The Boathouse, serves delicious thin crust pizza as well as assorted entrees. Seating is available inside or outside on a large deck with live music Thursday night. A courtesy car is available for provisioning. Convenience store at the marina has milk and some other basic foods. Staff at the marina have been friendly and are willing to help in any way they can.

Captain: , Freeport, ME (608)

Mostly new docks, decent restaurant, convience store/ship's store, fuel - but what makes this a standout place is the staff. Jonathan, our dock's "boy" checked with us regularly throughout our stay to see if there was anything we needed, or that he could do for us. Brian, the owner, was on site 24 hours a day, talking with owners and checking on staff. And, the place is extremely pet friendly. When I asked where to walk our dogs, I was told to let them run free! Brian works hard to cultivate a family atmosphere, and he is succeding.

We have stayed at many marinas over the years, and this has to be one of the best. The staff is outstanding and will continually ask if there is anything additional they can do to help your stay be more pleasant. The docks are excellent, with only a bit of wake and current from the river.

The showers and laundry are spotless, as is their pool. The ship store actually has many items you would find at a West Marine. We were here longer than we wanted as we waited for the Erie Canal to open, and the staff at this marina could not have made it a better stay. Just excellent.

Shout out to the the Shady Harbor Marina. Brian, Derrick, and the rest of the staff provided excellent service and made us feel right at home. The marina members adopted us like we were one of the regulars. The on-site restaurant provided a wide variety of selections including seafood, pizza, and hamburgers. All were excellent. We also took advantage of the pool and laundry. Even the wi-fi and cable worked.

Last year we were fortunate in finding Shady Harbor as we headed down the Hudson from Niagara, Ontario.
We had incurred a bad vibration and pulled into Shady Harbor for advice.
From the moment we arrived to departure a couple weeks later, the personal care and attention we received was first class, the complicated engineering involved highly professional. We could not have wished for a better visit. Bravo to all at Shady.
I would encourage everybody to visit and be as happy and pleased as we were!

Great marina...stayed there June 1st after a long day on the Hudson River - no current in the marina, easy to fuel, brand new pumpout...pool, showers, BBQ's, picnic tables and laundry...great ships store (some food necessities, tshirts, boating nice to haves, boat parts), full service lift and and restaurant next door - including gluten free pizza and pasta - yeah!!!! Reasonable rate and easy in and out - plus the people that make this their home port are very nice - lots of well behaved dogs as well!

Great place for transients as well as there is an enterprise car rental and lots of shopping just down the street

We would stay here again - not particularly well known yet as this is just their 3rd year open (2 for 2 was 2 years of hurricanes....) - I wish them luck with making that 2 for 3 and so on!

They certainly earn their ranking. Clean marina, nice docks, very friendly and professional dock help and a fabulous restaurant (albeit a bit noisy from the bar). On the way back down the Hudson we made the terrible mistake of staying someplace else. Do yourself a favor - run the extra miles and stay here.

Fantastic facilities and a fabulous restaurant (Yanni's). We stayed here on the way to our destination and loved it. We had mechanical problems on the way home and spent several days there. Brian and Derrick were awesome lending us a car and getting us a hotel while our boat was being repaired. Their crew were really friendly and helpful during our "crisis". Can't thank them enough! A great place to stop and spend some time!

We were looking for a place to visit for a long weekend with family on our 40' trawler. We couldn't go to our usual spot, so I got on Active Captain and saw the great reviews of Shady Harbor. They are spot on - Great, friendly, welcoming greeting from owner Brian Donovan. Beautiful new docks, travel lifft, pool, picnic area, convenience/ship store, spotless grounds and buildings. The palm trees are such fun!

The Hudson is narrow there, with an Island opposite the marina. Because of this, most boaters really do slow down and observe the NO WAKE zone. We were not bothered by heavy wakes at all. This is a good stopping spot on the way north to the canals and Lake Champlain. More important, it is a great destination ... We hope to bring our Cruising Fleet group there next summer.

Update: A GREAT destination marina!, 2012-07-16
Captain: , East Coast (174)

I just returned from visiting Donovan's Shady Harbor for the first time since Irene. The upper Hudson River once again has a great destination marina. The new docks are spectacular and a great indication of what's to come as they plan to replace more. The grounds are immaculate. The updates to the ship's store are terrific - so great to be able to do light provisioning (including beer) at fair prices. The list goes on. If you're looking for a getaway on the Hudson where the marina is the destination, take a good look at Shady Harbor. And for transients on the move, it remains the easiest stop in the area.

Again, well done, Donovans! I'll be back.

New owners, the Donovans, did an outstanding job accommodating as many boats as they could seeking safe harbor before the storm hit. While many docks here were rendered unusable, i do not believe any boats were damaged. Their service in a crisis situation was exceptional and speaks to the world-class marina I expect they will establish here.

Their fuel was inspected and certified and they have gas and diesel currently available. They even have the pump-out working already.

Well done, Brian, Kathy, Bob and everyone else that made an extraordinarily tense time almost enjoyable.

Captain: , Gulf Shores Alabama (748)

I did not intend on stopping here, but blew out an injector line coming down the Hudson and limped in. They had their mechanic on the boat trying to help within 30 minutes. The manager loaned us his car to make a trip to the parts store, and they introduced us to a local "diesel guy" that did some amazing magic in his sholp on the evening before the 4th of July Holiday. They have a nice ships store, fuel, maintenance service, showers, pool, electric and water. The only downside is that the docks are subject to big boat wakes on the Hudson. The friendliness makes up for that.
The restaurant next door is 5 star alone. Great entertainment.

Brian,Kathy and Bob Donovan are REAL Boaters that have made Shady Harbor into a Destination on the Hudson! They are more than willing to do whatever it takes to make your stay enjoyable. We visited Memorial day weekend just after they took over and it was already a cut above the others. Great new Italian Restaurant, Yannis Cucina has great food fresh and tastey. I would recommend this marina to anyone transiting the Hudson River.

New Owners, 2011-06-12
Captain: , Cape Coral, FL (220)

We pulled into the Shady Harbor Marina this morning and met one the new owners. The men on the dock were very helpful as the current and wind were pushing us around a bit. We are a 48 foot power boat w/50 amp service, no problem here. This is a very nice spot, pretty view, with an exceptional Italian Restaurant on site, and a large ship's store. The owners let us borrow a car to do some grocery shopping nearby; they have free internet which actually did go out to the docks (that's been a problem in some of these big marinas). The grounds are green, spacious, and with picnic table. They have a pool and lots of chairs. The owners intend to add a large travel lift and make the ship's store a convenient store, too. We are continuing on to Waterford tomorrow, but this would be a place to stay awhile. Call them at 518-756-8001; the link to their new website may not yet be functioning.

Brian Kathy and the Dockmaster Bob are hard at work getting Shady Harbor in shape for the season. Docks are in, new landscaping, parking area upgraded and some major refitting of the translift.

They are also restocking the store with a larger grocery selection.

The restaurant is opening this weekend. Looking forward to enjoying an adult beverage after a days work on the boat.
