Reviews for Shadows Marina
Awesome place to stop, 2017-06-24
Captain: , St Joseph Michigan Pier 33 (40)

I am in the process of doing the Great Loop. I have stopped at many marinas a long the way. This place was awesome. Nice piers. The dockmaster was very nice and helpful.

The restruant was just redone and the prices were very resonable and the food great.

Stick to the facing dock, 2017-06-15
Captain: , montauk ny (150)

Unless you are experienced with strong winds and tides, stick to the facing dock. It can be VERY tricky docking inside this marina. The dockmaster is very helpful but current makes it very diffcult so only attempt at slack tide.

Docks are new and well maintained. Facilities consist of a portable trailer which was clean and functional. Excellant internet. Nice bike ride to the Walkway Over the Hudson. Picturesque location at the base of the Poughkeepsie Bridge.

Updated review 6/2017:
Still would stick to the facing dock as the currents can be wicked. The dockmaster Keith is awesome and incredibly helpful from docking assistance, to ice delivery, to egg sandwich delivery. Internet was lightning fast. Increasing rating from 3 to 4 stars.

Great overnight stop, 2017-06-09
Captain: , Georgetown, SC (100)

6-7-17 stayed overnight at Shadows. The docks and service were great. The breakfast sandwich was HUGE. This is also a good location to rent a car and see nearby sites.

Great, Easy Stop for a Night, 2017-06-03
Captain: , Campbell Creek, NC (594)

June 1, 2017:
New composite, floating docks. New power towers and fire extinguisher towers. Heavy duty cleats are adjustable in a track system.
Keith is super hands on Dockmaster. Quick to respond and helpful.
There are strong currents. Kieth makes it easy.
We were alongside the outside floating dock; not waked bad at all. One tug without a tow got us once, but not awful. Was a quiet, peaceful night.
Bathroom/showers are a clean, newer trailer with 3 individual locking shower/bathrooms.
BEST PART? Keith delivered breakfast sandwiches to the boat the next morning. Biggest, best breakfast sandwich we have had to date.
What Prime Rib is to Coinjock, these Breakfast Sandwiches are to Shadows.
There is a restaurant onsite. We didn't go inside.

Good marina, great dockmaster, 2016-08-23
Captain: , Huntington (10)

I agree with most of what is written. The marina definitely has strong currents, but it also has an excellent dockmaster in keith who will help you every step of the way. New docks, has electric since the summary is confusing. They are really building up the area around the docks...currently condos under construction and big plans for the surrounding areas. The restaurant is huge, beautiful views, and the food is ok.

Wonderful night, 2016-07-14
Captain: , haverstraw (191)

Restaurant turns in to club at night we had a blast food was awesome and dock master was super friendly. Current runs right through the marina so get ready.

Good nights stay, 2016-06-20
Captain: , New York (20)

Docks were brand new and the Dockmaster was helpful and accomidating. They dont have permanent restrooms or showers- just like high end portable ones. It wasn't an issue for me but could be to others.

Great dock and dine facility, 2016-06-13
Captain: , Palm Harbor (20)

Located just south of mid-Hudson bridge, we had a ball at this gem of a marina and were able to visit the FDR home by taxi. Keith is definitely as loveable and knowledgeable as everyone here stated before. Restaurant is definitely a great asset for this marina, and it'd be five stars if there were any sort of breakwater. Too many passing boats and or barges throw off serious wakes. All in all not worth passing up this marina for.

Good dockmaster, solid docks, but wicked current, 2016-06-12
Captain: , Phoenix (100)

Price ($3.00 per foot) listed in Active Captain is incorrect. Current price is $1.50 per foot. Because other marinas on the Hudson are more expensive, we wondered what we would find. The marina currently has approximately 50 slips with big plans. There are 2 facing docks, one parallel to the river channel, one along the S side running perpendicular to the river. We easily docked on the parallel dock at slack tide; glad we got there when we did as the tide was really strong at mid-tide! Much debris collected in the slips.

The good price, we believe, is a reflection on the unfinished state of the marina. 3 bathrooms (each maybe double the size of a typical cruiser’s head, with sink, composting toilet and shower) are located in a conveniently located trailer. There is no laundry; not even an office yet. We sure don’t think there is the advertised wave attenuators. Keith the dock master is helpful, funny, and a wealth of local knowledge.

The train station is less than a mile. Walking the old railroad bridge (now a well-used walking/biking trail) is fantastic with awesome views. The city has well-marked trails through the distinct areas. Hyde Park is 8 miles north with attractions.

We recommend this marina over Hyde Park Marina, price listed at $2.00 per foot but was $3.00 per foot with a dock master was rude and basically said we could take our business elsewhere.

Service and location, 2016-06-02
Captain: , Hilton Head Island (40)

The dockmaster, Cpt Kieth, a gruff (but loveable!) New Yorker, was very helpful getting our 42 ft boat into the slip. Was also great fun to take our bikes over the Hudson on the nearby walking bridge. Shadows resturant pricey but good.

Capt Keith is the best, 2016-05-31
Captain: , Montrose, NY (60)

Stayed at Shadows Marina Memorial Day weekend for wedding at the Grandview. What agreat venue. Keith the dockmaster was extremely accommadating. As others have said he goes out of way for you. Highly recommend it for an overnight or two. When docking the current can be challenging, slack tides for vessels or operators with restricked manuvering abilities. Yes boat traffic will cause rock'n & roll'n, the Hudson is .5m wide in this area. Holiday weekend everbody is boating. So use plenty of fenders and learn to deal with it. It does calm down at night with the gentle rock from the occasional barge passing

comfortable and beats working with the tides, 2016-05-18
Captain: , Buffalo (832)

Tying up was easy and the restaurant was really good. We would stop again.

Very Pleasant, 2015-11-04
Captain: , Fort Lauderdale FL (124)

We stopped for an overnight, dinner and to see some friends on our way down river. Keith was extremely helpful in getting us tied up. Floating docks are always nice.

Tug/barge wake was bouncy. Fortunately we had more fenders (due to the Erie Canal transit) and that kept us from banging.

Our dinner was excellent in the restaurant. Can't comment on the facilities since we didn't use them. Price was reasonable as well.

Keith Makes A Difference, 2015-09-05
Captain: , Hilton Head, SC (1244)

Keith is the dockmaster and also captains the shuttle boat so depending upon your arrival time, he may be shuttling passengers downriver. The docks are nice, but depending upon how (dis)courteous other captains are - you can get some serious wake outside on the face dock.

The bathroom / shower combos in the trailer are OK but just so.

Keith was very helpful and offered us doughnuts and coffee in the AM. As others said, the current can be significant, but that applies to this whole Hudson waterway.

Nice new modern docks, 2015-08-30
Captain: , Patterson NY (60)

2014: Stopped here for lunch and tied up to the outside of the protective wall for the inside docks. The current is strong and the wave action is significant from passing boats...even so, I'm glad I did tie up to the outside as a motor yacht lost control inside the marina from the current and trashed several boats and his own pretty badly...Saw this from my table. The food tasted a bit off and paid for it later when I vomited for several hours. I'm afraid to give this place another try. UPDATE: Summer 2015...I thought we should give this place another try. The location is very nice with the sunset, the riverwalk over the hudson and the mid hudson bridge. The docks are very well kept but the current is a killer! If you time your arrival and departure around slack tide all is fine. I left an hour early and It was a pain trying to get off the docks after dinner. As for the food here, I played it safe and had the Hickory Burger. Again, the food is beyond bad! The bacon topping was greasy and raw(no exageration...RAW), I asked for the bacon to be cooked and the waitress returned 1 min. later with crispy bacon that was cold and tasted tainted...I left it alone with the mushy days old sliced repeat of last visit. The french fries were good :) also, while waiting for our table I was entertained watching a bartender spend way too long trying to slice a piece of lime off a lime wedge for a drink...he was using a dulll 1 inch blade attachment on a bottle opener...He was a fool but seriously, They need to fire the head/executive chef ASAP and stop poisoning guest.

Excellent Service, 2015-08-25
Captain: , Racine, WI (525)

Everything is new. Not protected from wakes, but Keith suggest we use several fenders and it was no issue. Great location, good views, restrurant was good. Sure if you need to go to town it is a taxie ride but it was only 7 bucks. Good relaxing place to stay.

Enjoyed our stay at Shadows, 2015-08-16
Captain: , Lindenhurst, NY (30)

The dock was new, bathroom and showers are in a trailer but are clean, air conditioned and have hot water. The dock master, Keith, is great, knowledgable about the area, friendly and helpful. There are really no stores close by. Most activities are distant, unless you like walking far and unhill.

New floating Docks, 2015-08-08
Captain: , Naples, FL (682)

Great place to stop on the river. Easy in and out for inside slips with plenty of turning room. New floating docks. Showers and heads are ashore in a trailer (purpose built) and were clean and functional for our visit.
Dockmaster, Capt Keith, is helpful, attentive and knowledgeable. He answered all calls promptly, assigned us a slip in advance, took payment and gave us the information pack right on the dock and then checked that all was well later in the evening around sunset. And to cap it off, he delivered hot coffee and donuts and breakfast sandwiches at 0800 in the morning. What a guy!
We didn't use the restaurant on site but it was hopping an a friday night. There are a number of other restaurants just a short walk away in the town. The culinary institute and the FDR home/library are a short taxi ride away (about $12 one way).

Nice Facility, can be a little rocky, 2015-08-02
Captain: , Massapequa, NY (30)

Liked the location, the restaurant is a very nice facility. Keith the dockmaster is a very nice guy and very knowledgable about the surrounding area. The docks were recently replaced. We had some trouble getting the water to work and had to run a long hose to a few slips away, but I think that was a temporary fluke.

New docks, great restaurant, beautiful setting, 2015-07-24
Captain: , Jacksonville (100)

just south of mid-hudson bridge. The marina was set up as a dock&dine facility, so no pumpout, laundry, or fuel. Showers and heads are in a small trailer. Docks were new with good power and water. Some exposure to wakes from passing barges. Great dock master (Kieth). Discounted weekly dockage rate.

OK stop - 6/11/15, 2015-06-27
Captain: , Atlanta (770)

Current can rip through here - try to arrive at slack tide. Capt. Keith was great at getting us turned around at the dock to leave on a max flood tide. Price is good.

Besides the marina, the Shadows complex is a hugh hotel/event center/restaurant complex that was jumping on a Thursday night. Dock is locked/secure, and not too loud after hours.

Long walk to the riverwalk area by the high foot bridge across the Hudson - the elevator from the park up to the bridge was broken, so we weren't able to go across the bridge.

Nice and convenient, 2015-06-20
Captain: , Baltimore, MD (42)

New floating docks with a great view up and down the river. Water depth 30 feet plus which tells you that the current really moves through there. Captain Keith, the dock master is clearly a very experienced boat handler, and really gives you an infomative idea of what's needed for a successful approach and landing. The restaurant was excellent. The shoreside bathroom facilities are somewhat lacking.

Beautiful spot, great restaurant facilities and service, 2014-12-20
Captain: , ann arbor (120)

We stopped here on our way up to the Erie canal. We stayed a night on the outside dock as that's the only place we would fit. The dock master was really helpful and gave us a great discount. We ate at the restaurant which had great food (big martinis) and a great view of the bridge. They even sent one of their employees out to get us 6 gallons of drinking water for the boat and added it to our bill. Great place, great people.

Nice facility and great restaurant, 2014-08-04
Captain: , Albany, NY (100)

We spent two nights here. The docks are absolutely superb - great electric service, very stable new docks. While the docks are surrounded by a wave attenuator system, when people do not abide by the no wake there is some rock and roll but it settled down at night. The view of the Mid-Hudson bridge lit at night is beautiful. Restaurant was terrific and even has dockside delivery. We walked to the Walkway Over the Hudson, a 1.3 mile (each way) converted rail bridge that is now a pedestrian bridge over the river. Beautiful views and nice walk. About 1 mile walk from the marina. Keith the dockmaster was very helpful and even delivered Dunkin Donuts and coffee to our boat in the morning.

Convenient location, 2014-06-19
Captain: , Fort Lauderdale (110)

Good docks but subject to currents and wakes from large vessels moving. We rocked a lot on this dock. If you need toilet facilites or laundry do not stop here as they have portable faciliteis that are frankly the worst of our trip. Keith is helpful and it is a good place to get off and explore all of Hyde Park, the CIA and FDR presidential libary. Walk the walk over bridge. So much to do. We were not told free Dock for dinner. We paid 2.00 per foot so perhaps policy has changed. We had an enterprise car delivered and explored the area in depth from this location.

AWESOME!!!, 2014-06-07
Captain: , catskill (290)

The true gem of the hudson. This place has the best food I have eaten in upstate NY. The dock is free with a meal. Docks are all brand new, in great shape. Have visited twice so far, will visit again.

Another 5 star rating for Captain Keith, 2013-08-27
Captain: , Patchogue (85)

We arrived at Shadows during 2mph current and 10 knot winds. As advised by Capt. Keith, we stayed on the outside dock. Well, we sure got rocked a few times, but if properly secured with enough fenders, the stay was great.
Captain Keith made arrangements for transportation with Bishop, who was just as helpful.
Dining at the Shadow restaurant provided a great dinner with reasonable cost.
Once again, Captain Keith made this marina a definite stop over for future trips up the Hudson.

Thank goodness for Keith..., 2013-07-29
Captain: , North Carolina (344)

We stayed here a night. Coming into this marina can be a bit scary because of the fast current. We also had wind to deal with but Keith talked us right into our spot on the inside on the dock. He gave excellent instructions and before we knew it, we were tied up. Put out plenty of fenders because the barges are always going through causing the boat o rock.

We did the appetizers at the restaurant and as mentioned, you really don't need much more.

July 07-15-13, 2013-07-29
Captain: , Half Moon Bay Marina (10)

Shadows Marina - July 15 and 16, 2013. s/v MYTYME. Two night stay during 90+ heat wave! The Hudson River current in Poughkeepsie area is very strong. Docking inside floating wave attenuator is best at slack current, otherwise Dockmaster Keith should talk you in on radio. He is the best. He knows all boats, accomplished captain, very helpful. Keith wants you to enjoy your stay. He also runs "fastboat" to Torches restaurant in Newburgh if you want a another day adventure. He is very accomendating, very available. Note: It's amazing how wave dock works since close passing commercial ships can set off some hugh rockers, and that outside dock takes the brunt of it. Fact of life anywhere along a narrow part of Hudson River. You can also dock outside of wave dock like I did but be aware as you see those ships approaching, gets your attention!
Good to get off boat and enjoy Shadows on the Hudson restaurant overlooking marina/river. Milti and Chris are outstanding managers at the restaurant, providing the happy hour appetizers (huge) everyone talks about, riverside seating views, indoor/outdoor bar area, and great food. Shadows Marina is also a dock and dine... tie up free, eat, leave. Saw that going on. You call Milti or Chris, (Keith will give you info packet) and they will deliver take-out to your boat and deliver ice as well. You settle your dock/food bill at restaurant (credit card), so make sure managers Milti or Chris know if you have any special needs.
It's a short walk down Rinaldi Blvd to Metro-North train station where restaurants, taverns, pizza located. Nice park area also there. Consider a taxi or weekend trolley from Shadows to bring you to Walkway over the Hudson bridge for the experience of a people only bridge (NYS park), with the greatest views. Really a must see. Ask Keith.
Although my slow sailboat took 6 hours riding current from Haverstraw Bay to Poughkeepsie (35 miles), my power boat friends can do it in less than an hour. Pretty good.

Good place to stop, 2013-06-28
Captain: , Freeport, ME (608)

The current can run hard through the marina - it was over 2 knots as we entered - but Kieth and Lew knew exactly what to do and talked me through getting in. Once they had lines to the docks, they continued to give instruction to get me to my assigned spot on the inside of the face dock. Never a raised voice, but plenty of instruction.

As has been mentioned, don't miss happy hour, from 1600 to 1900. The $5 appetizers are a meal in themselves, and drinks are reasonable priced. It was all this couple could do to make it through two appetizers.

The docks are new aluminum and synthetic decking. The water had failed for our part of the dock, but Kieth offered to run hoses if we needed water. Pets are welcome, with a large grassy area for pet walking - do remember to clean up. Expected within a year or so is a major expansion, with a shower house to replace the portable shower trailer, a marina office, more docks, and probably more.

A delightful stop, 2013-06-25
Captain: , Rockport, Texas (130)

We stopped here on the recommendation of "My Happy Hours" It was a great stop. First of all, Dockmaster, Capt Keith and his assistant, Lew were most helpfull on arrival and all the time we were there. The docks were a bit rocky at times but overall we were not uncomfortable.
The shower/restroom portable trailer was great. Best of all was the Happy Hour at the Restaurant. The appetizers were so generous that they served as a meal. Lastly, the Enterprise car rental was nearby and the service great.
All in all a great stop. WE stayed there 4 days....moving slowly while waiting for the Erie Canal to reopen.

Awesome Stop, 2013-05-28
Captain: , Vancouver, Canada (487)

Keith the Dockmaster is an attribute to this awesome marina. It is $2 a foot. The whole marina is brand new and it is well worthg the stop. Make sure you head to the bar at Happy Hour from 5-7 where you can sit it the bar (not the restaurant) and have a feast for $5 (Ask for the Happy Hour Menu). With very reasonably priced Happy hour drinks. A very secure location. We did not experience much wash although many large vessels came by.
A Great Stop

Good spot, good restaurant, 2013-01-31
Captain: , Gloucester, MA (807)

A nice stopping point along the Hudson. Well maintained marina, but like everything along the river it's exposed to boat wake. Good restaurant.

Captain: , stormville (10)

shadows is an awesome ,friendly, entertaining marina. Wonderful food dock side dining. 24/7 dockmaster whom is also there to help. I would go annywhere else.

dockmaster, 2012-10-14
Captain: , Shadows Marina (30)

great guy learned alot..sorry the season ended

Kieth, the dockmaster, is great, good central location for Hudson Visit, 2012-09-19
Captain: , Alexandria, Va. (30)

I needed transmission fluid, and he picked it up for me and brought it to the boat. This is a good marina from which to visit Hyde Park because you can walk to the RR station and catch the once-a-day National Park Service bus, which brings you back in the evening. If you have a car here, you are well placed to visit all the historic houses up and down that stretch of the Hudson. I suggest Kycuit and Boscobel as being particularly well done.

A Great Place to Stop, 2012-08-09
Captain: , Midland Ontario (660)

Brand new docks with great views of the river. Keith does a great job of looking after all your needs. A bit isolated from shopping but Enterprise Rent a car and Rent a Wreck are just a $6 cab ride away.
We will stay here again.

nice docks, 2012-06-29
Captain: , West shore Marlboro NY (825)

great dock facilities food not bad

Captain: , Marlboro Yacht Club, Marlboro NY (515)

we frequent this place for dinner and happy hour. Very nice and helpful dock master, restaurant is nice and have always received good service and food, never stayed the night but looks very nice, all new composite docks and new towers.

Very Accomodating, 2012-06-10
Captain: , santa barbara (771)

Have stayed there twice - both times Keith (dockmaster) and Bishop (assistant) were very helpful in terms of docking as well as arranging for siteseeing and groceries. Docks are floating, on busy days expect some wake from passing vessels, particularly tows.

Nice view- Great food, 2012-05-28
Captain: , Key west (31)

We really enjoyed the restaurant here, and the views are great. Only complaint would be that it's a bit overexposed to wind, but all in all, we'd refer this to anyone who wants to visit the estates or be up in this area. Great staff too.

Well kept marina, 2012-05-28
Captain: , Jacksonville Fl (1550)

Stopped by there today and was told dockage is 2.00 per foot.

New Docks. Wake out outer slips. Can visit museum from here, 2011-10-18
Captain: , Key Biscayne, FL (30)

Very nice, new docks. We visited the FDR Musuem. Like previous reviewer wrote, the outside dock is easy, but with strong wind, it's wise to stay as close inside as possible. Lots of wake. Had a nice time and would come back again

Great, New Docks, 2011-06-04
Captain: , St. Augustine, FL (4307)

This marina has beautiful, new docks and power towers. And, . . . well, they have new docks. You don't stop in Poughkeepsie for the marina experience -- you just need to find a place to park your boat so that you can visit the FDR Musuem and Home, and experience an amazing meal at The Culinary Institute of America. Call the dockmaster number listed, and Keith will be helpful in finding you a spot. There is an easy outside dock, but with 25K winds, we chose and inside slip. As with most marinas on the Hudson, you are open to wakes, but the inside slips are a bit protected. Bishop, the SeaTow captain, took us to the Museum and Culinary Institute, but believe we would rent a car next time. They have begun building a new facility that will house a marina office, showers and laundry.
