Reviews for Sebastian River Marina
Best Hurricane Haulout, 2016-10-12
Captain: , Tavernier, Florida (10)

Doug and SRM hauled us for Hurricane Matthew, blocked and tied-down the boat, and all the others around us. Put us in one of the safest place in the yard. We survived hurricane force winds without a scratch. We couldn't tell that any of the boats in the yard had moved. Very reassuring to know you can count on that kind of attention to detail in a severe situation.

BEST RESOURCE, 2016-07-23
Captain: , KEY LARGO (22)

I have relied on Doug Hillman and Sebastian River Marina for more than 10 years. Although I no longer berth my antique sportfisher there, but Doug continues to be my number source of information, parts and problem solving! If he does not know the answer? he knows someone who does ! or he will find out. If you have a problem with something that floats? Doug and his crew will help with your boat ! I now keep her more than 200 miles away and still depend on Doug for honest, practical advice.

Groovey Girl 2010, 2016-05-25
Captain: , Neenah WI (10)

In July of 2010 I purchased a 85 Egg Harbor in Port Canaveral and 30 miles into my trip back to Panama City FL, the boat suffered catastrophic fuel issues that left us crippled and with little familiarity with my new hull and not many choices left to us we I was able to limp into the Sebastian River Marina. Doug and his staff bent over backwards to get us back up and running. His keen sense of the issue and his sizable knowledge of local support he was able to put us in touch with weekend mechanic support, made parts runs for us and got us up and running in a couple of days. His customer support and service didn?t end there he maintained contact with us through our adventure, periodically checking up on us to make sure we were still under way.
I highly recommend Sebastian River Marina if it?s a fuel stop or a long layover, no matter the circumstance you can be sure to get the utmost in customer service, storytelling and camaraderie from someone that has been on both sides of the counter.

A Friend in Need Is Doug Indeed!, 2016-05-25
Captain: , Point Pleasant NJ (170)

When I discovered a weeping fuel tank a friend who keeps his boat here recommended Doug's marina. Great choice. Doug has a lifetime of maritime boating and maintenance experience. His crew is excellent. Doug's billing policies are very fair. The manner in which this business is run helps to make a bad situation easier to manage. Plus there are a lot of good shops and restaurants/bars nearby. Capt Ed Genteel

Boat Angles here when you need one., 2016-04-20
Captain: , Chattanooga, TN (483)

At Vero Beach, our port engine would not crank. I decided to go on one engine. We were on a PDQ 34 power cat. Under way on one is fine but manuvering is impossible. We needed help. We passed SRM checked them out on AC and gave them a call. Told me to come on in and they would catch me at the fuel dock. Doug and crew were there waiting on me. They were very busy but fit us into their schedule and made sure we were comfortable. Doug put a mechanic on it within hours to check it out then had parts overnighted. The next AM, Steve, the mechanic was right on it and did a very professional job. Two days later we were once again headed North. If you need repairs, service, etc. I would highly reccommend Sebastion River Marina. Doug and staff were great and the price was very fair. Especially under the circumstances.

Great Marina and Staff, 2016-04-11
Captain: , Cape Coral (40)

Doug and his staff went out of their way for us. Stayed here around 3-30-2016. There was a large storm as we were heading north on the ICW. Had to find a place to stay and called Doug and let him know the time frame. They closed at 5pm but they wait for us throughout the storm and were very accommodating helping us to tie up as the marina itself is small. We have a 37 Sea Ray Aft cabin and in high winds were blowing around. They got us in. Did a night stay so rate was excellent. In the am fueled up with the staff again excellent at helping us to the dock. Thank you Doug and crew.

Silver Lining, 2016-04-11
Captain: , Sandwich (692)

Doug Hillman and his crew are mariners sea angels on the ICW. Our mishap began just north of MM950 when we drifted out of the channel and our props caught a mound of rocks. Not at all familiar with the area and who could haul a 42 Tiara, used the Waterway Guide to find boat yard services. Sebastian River Marina & Boatyard being the closest gave them a call. Doug returned the v-mail and guided us into the marina. Since it was late Saturday, he gave us first haul on Monday. Promptly at 8AM she was hauled, props swapped out, bottom power washed and shaft zincs installed. By 10:45AM we were under way again. Can't thank you enough for job well done. Bravo Zulu. Act of Faith - Rewarded, 2016-03-30
Captain: , Rock Hall (21)

Happened to stop at the Sebastian River Marina and Boatyard for fuel and a quick sandwich across the street on Good Friday afternoon on our trek back north. Ready to go, but boat wouldn't start - nothing, not even a click. Despite the pending holiday, owner Doug mustered his crew to take a quick look and diagnosis on what I was calling an intermittent warm starting problem with my Yanmar. They came up with an attack plan, but with the weekend, it couldn't start until Monday morning. They seemed to know what they were doing, so in a leap of faith I signed on to stay at the modest marina with my wife to spend our Easter. We weren't disappointed, and actually enjoyed discovering the local area, and more enjoyed having our boat properly serviced and heading back north by Tuesday. After two days of hard running, everything seems great and I told Doug when he called to follow up the other night. Overall, a great and unexpected experience.

Good service is a trademark, 2016-03-16

best service on the east coast, 2016-03-10
Captain: , Stockton Springs Maine (81)

Stopped here for some minor work on our trawler after reading all the positive reviews. Met by Doug Hillman and his staff to help with dock lines. We had some auto pilot issues, fresh water leak and leaking rudder post. The following day, Doug's crew, John, Mike, Burl, and Steve were on the boat and issues resolved. I liked their work ethics so much that we stayed an additional four weeks and had them change cables a few other electrical issues and a new full canvas enclosure done. All this was done in a timely manner and at a fair price. I strongly recommended this Marina from an overnight slip to full haul out repairs. Specialize in bottom jobs. Fast and efficient.

If in trouble, stop here!, 2016-01-01
Captain: , Port St Lucie, FL (10)

We blew out the starboard transmission when southbound on th ICW
Started making phone calls and dicovered this marina and it had a travel lift. Doug Hillman, owner, helped us find the marina at marker 55 and we limped in on one engine.
we were met at the gas dock by Doug and staff. Aftera quick diagnoses the tranny was shot. Making a long story short, the tranny was replaced and some other problems discovered. and I was able to complete my trip to Port Saint Lucie. Can't say enough good things about Doug and his staff. All were helpful and truly concerned enough to make a bad situation tolerable. Facilty was well equipted and clean.

great place for a stay, 2015-12-05
Captain: , Apollo Beach, FL (30)

Spent one night here on 12/3/2015. motoryachts upto 40 ft accommodated easily. Doug Hillman, owner, a true gentleman. Service excellent. Doug drove us to Sebastian, and we had a fun night at Captain Hirams' Resort. Excellent food there. the marina is a bit tight, and a little tough to get into but well worth it! 50 amp service and water. veteran friendly, and just generally friendly all around. men's and women's restrooms/showers were sparkling clean, with plenty of hot water! dockage fee very reasonable, and $10.00 flat fee for 50 amp electric service. I will be back!

Great facility, 2015-10-24
Captain: , Hilton Head Island (40)

We spent several days at Doug Tillman's marina. He and his staff were very helpful as we worked on our 39 ft Carver. We were very fortunate to choose this marina and will do so again when we head back south.

Very accomodating, 2015-09-21
Captain: , Beach Haven, NJ (20)

Howling winds didn't keep 4 dock hands from helping me fuel and dock my boat, after hours. Owner was kind enough to give us a ride to a restaurant. Best bathroom facility of the entire trip. Clean...

Captain: , Lake City Colorado (50)

Doug thanks for a wonderful stay and the boat advice. This was our second stay there , our first in 03 to have the steel tanks replaced in our GB 46 the job was first class and reasonable considering the work. we would highly recommend them. Thanks Again South Pole V

Great place to dock, 2015-06-11
Captain: , Palm Bay, Florida (10)

I have been at the marina for 6 months and so far have been very very happy here. Mike is there for all of us to help whenever there is a need. Doug is both friendly and knowledgeable in the boating world and again is always happy to answer questions, get work done, and run the marina with a family friendly atmosphere.

Ever heard of Sabastian Florida??, 2015-05-27
Captain: , Portland, Maine (10)

I had Not, Until I had an issue with my props and needed to be hauled. Doug and his people and I mean all of them , made what could have been a real nightmare a relativly painless ordeal.

I was bringing a boat up from Naples, Florida to Maine and unfortunatly dinged my props on a dredge pipe that had floated up. Doug and his crew pulled the boat, had the props repaired and boat back in the water the next day.

That was great and all but the best part was Doug stayed in touch over the next week checking in to make sure everything was performing as it needed to be.

Doug is unbelievable I was very fortunate to have run into him and his crew. if your in the area stop in and enjoy his company he's quite the jokester.

Thanks Doug!!!

Random Choice - AWESOME experience, 2015-04-24
Captain: , Rochester Hills, MI (20)

As we were passing by the Sebastian Inlet, we decided to call it a day and randomly called this marina for a slip for the night. Doug was the most accommodating Harbor Master anyone could ask for. He helped dock our boat and we had a great, restful night. The next morning, we were ready to leave and started chatting with Doug about where we were headed. WOW!!! He was quick to offer the necessary advice for our trip. We ended up chatting for over an hour and learning all the ins and outs of our upcoming trip. We're still sorry we couldn't have spent a couple of days there just to learn from his decades of boating. His advice proved invaluable and spot on; he knew what we were going to experience and gave us the guidance to be able to handle everything the ocean and the ICW threw our way. If you ever get the chance, we highly recommend staying at this marina and chatting with Doug for a few minutes; your boating will be enriched!!

Home Away From Home, 2015-04-24
Captain: , Sebastian FL (142)

I've hesitated to write this review for quite a while, mostly because I'm selfish. Doug, Steve, Burl, Mike and Angie run the best-kept-secret-marina on Florida's East Coast. We have kept our boat at SRM for five or so years now and, without fail, every time I run into a problem (which is often enough), they treat us like we own the only boat they're responsible for (even though there are plenty). It's not a country club-like place, but it's always clean, prices are fair and, best of all, the staff is friendly and knowledgable. If you are in need of a safe haven or an excellent working boatyard, make sure not to pass them up. If you need more of a reference, contact us. Our home away from home%u2026

Came in for alternator repairs and Duog and his people took care of me at a good price.

Best Service Ever, 2015-03-04
Captain: , Pensacola,Fl (80)

We were lucky. If you have to break down, do it near this place! We lost our port engine heading north; checked a couple of options and gave Sebastian River Marina a call based on location and reviews. Doug Hillman - owner - said to come in and they would take a look right away. On our arrival we had trouble manuevering the 52' trawler through the right angle turn at the fuel dock with only the starbd engine. Doug had all his people there and they handled lines beautifully, getting us into a slip without a bump. He came aboard and looked over the problem; said they would be back at 8 a.m. to fix us. And they were. In addition to doing the job they took good care of the boat, laying down dropcloths so as not to get the deck dirty or scratch the floors. Over our gentle objections Doug asked that we go out together for a seatrial to make sure all was well before taking off - we did, and learned alot from watching this pro handle the helm. When he was satisfied with the result we returned to the dock, paid a fair bill and got ready to depart. We had a final issue with our generator not starting and Steven came back to help sort it out - at no additional charge.
Doug appears to love boats and boaters, has years of knowledge and experience, and runs a solid business. We feel very lucky to have had our breakdown just outside his marina!

Gracious Host, 2015-02-13
Captain: , Thunder Bay (10)

Last week we stayed at Sebastian River Marina for a few days. Doug was a most thoughtful & gracious host. We thank you so heartily. Wishing you good health & prosperity.

Highly Recommend!, 2015-01-16
Captain: , Manteo North Carolina (109)

Visited January, 2015. Forecast was for strong Northerlies so we jumped into the Sebastian River Marina for a secure tie up. Owner Doug Hilman and an associate were waiting for us at the dock. Maneuvering inside of the marina is tight, but he assisted in getting our catamaran into a slip in strong cross winds with about a foot on either side to spare. This is a working marina, so don't expect any frills....that being said the bathrooms were some of the cleanest we've encountered, nicely tiled and spacious. Doug gave us a lift to the local Winn Dixie and back. Wifi was excellent and fast (probably because most boats in the marina are local, not live aboards downloading movies!)
The channel is well marked, but I would not attempt in the dark, turn just south of Green 55. Stick to the northern side of the channel, minimum depth we found was 6 feet.

Stop, Tie Up and Get it Done, 2015-01-07
Captain: , Alpharetta, GA (35)

This is the Marina you want to stop in to get repairs or ongoing maintenance if you are in theSebastian area. Doug Hillman is the owner and treats you with VIP service from the moment you contact the marina. We were stopping for a few days (my parents live in the area) and selected this location over the shallow areas in the heart of Sebastian (i.e. Captn Hirams). In addition to some R&R we needed a standard oil change and our non-working windlass reviewed by an expert. Steve (an awesome mechanic who is on top of his game) was the lead person to change oil and give a look around the engine room for a quick check up. During the engine review he said we should consider changing our intake hoses. During our marine survey 1.5 years earlier this same diagnosis was on recommended. I decided it was time to do it. The oil change and intake hoses were all changed quickly and within the quoted price Doug gave me. We left the marina and immediatley experienced high temps on the starboard engine. We turned around and the Sebastian River Crew was there to great us, immediately dropped what they were doing to diagnosis our problem. We recently had impellers changed but signs kept leading back to checking the impellers. Sure enough the impeller was shreaded. We happened to have a spare impeller. Steve scoured the entire engine picking up all the loose impeller debris and installed new impeller. No charge and we were off. However, again we get outside into the channel and overheating occured again. Same routine but this time the focus was on the impeller pump. Turns out our pump was on its last leg. Doug used his contacts at 4:30 in the afternoon to order the pump for delivery the next morning. I could see the UPS truck arrive, Part checked in and Steve was immediatley heading to our boat to install the new pump. Doug insisted on a Sea Trial to ensure all was well. Thumbs up and we were on our way. I can't tell you how much confidence Doug and his crew give you. Soo, Stop, Tie up and get it done : )

6' on the way in. Narrow fairway for 45' boat, 2014-11-18
Captain: , Grand Haven Michigan (110)

Helpful staff provide good direction for approach to Marina and helped us tie up. We saw 6 feet on the way in (almost no tide here). The fairway was narrow for our 45 foot boat.

We Really Like This Place, 2014-11-17
Captain: , Port Colborne, ON (10)

We are not residents of the US so we are very pleased that we feel so comfortable with the security, service and atmosphere that we have found at Sebastian River Marina. Angie has proven to be helpful in so many ways and always with a friendly smile. The skilled labour and yardmen are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Ordering parts was quick and efficient. Doug is very knowledgeable and ensured timely, efficient and good work. It is true that restaurants and stores are not in the immediate vicinity however they are not far away; a 5-minute bicycle drive or 2-minute car drive. We have spent a lot of time in this small, quiet marina and are very pleased with the staff and services.

Service that went the extra mile-The Sebastian River Marina and Boatyard, 2014-11-17
Captain: , Daytona (10)

Since buying our trawler last March, we've been plagued with many mechanical issues. As a result, we've dealt with numerous boatyards and their technicians who tried, some skillfully, some not so skillfully, to resolve our problems. I therefore feel I'm somewhat knowledgeable in what to expect from marine repair facilities. Should you find yourself in the Sebastian, Florida area and in need of help, look no further that the Sebastian River Marina and Boatyard. They have hands-down the best, most tenacious and skilled crew we've encountered. Doug Hillman has put together a team that works tirelessly and has a can-do attitude, logically working step-by-step to resolve even the most complex problems. Doug's knowledge, resources, and contacts were envaluable in getting us back to our journey. Additionally, Doug personally took the time to make sure our problem was truly resolved with several time consuming sea trials. In the end, we were surprised with a bill that was much lower than expected along with a detailed assessment of maintenance recommendations. We even received a follow-up phone call from Doug to see how the boat was running. The experience with Doug and his crew has renewed our enthusiasm for the boating lifestye. As a former college professor, I grade this business and its customer service ... A+

Excellent small marina, 2014-11-08
Captain: , Manchester, MA (30)

Doug and his crew provided excellent hospitality and a lot of help in providing my wife and me with all that was needed for an excellent stay. We would recommend a stop to any one looking for a relaxing, quiet night off the ICW.

Terrific experience, 2014-11-04
Captain: , Newburyport, MA (20)

Had a great experience. We had 2 fuel filters that needed replacement and we're looking for a marina for transient and the tools we needed. Doug the owner was incredibly gracious, He loaned us the tools we needed, helped us with dock lines, even drove us to a restaurant for dinner (Squid Lips, excellent oak grilled fish). I would highly recommend this marina. The approach can get a little shallow at low tide, and the fairway is pretty narrow. However, Doug's hospitality saved us 1/2 day on the water.

Excellent full service boatyard, 2014-10-25
Captain: , Palm Bay, Florida (10)

I have had my boat hauled here for the past 11 years for bottom work and general repairs. Doug Hillman and his staff, Angie, Steve, John, Mike, and Burl are friendly, courtious, knowledgeable, and always ready to help. In all these years, I have never had a bad experience. I strongly recommend this facility.

Excellent full service marina, 2014-10-11
Captain: , Fellsmere (10)

The wife and I just sold our 36' aft cabin Carver and have gone back to a smaller trailer boat. We maintained a slip at the SRMB for 2 1/2 years and have not one thing negative to say about our experience. We have traveled the whole state of Florida by water and must say that Sebastian River Marina & Boatyard is at the top of our list of full service marinas. Having the enclosed basin right off the intercoastal channel was a real asset. Doug Hillman the owner, employs an excellent professional marine staff. Steve, Burl, Mike, Angie & John were very generous and helpful to our boating needs during our stay at the marina. We spent a tremendous amount of time on the boat and it was always a pleasure to come back to our slip and be greeted by Doug & his staff. We have spent alot of time in boat repair yards, but never have observed one so clean and organized. The bathrooms and showers are always clean and well maintained. During the week there is a tremendous amount of boat repair going on, and yet at the end of the day the yard is clean and organized. Very impressive and professional. We are truly going to miss not being at the marina, but our plans have changed and must move on. We cannot say enough about Doug and his staff and will truly miss not being there.

Ducked in for storm protection, 2014-09-25
Captain: , Marco Island, FL (480)

We ducked in here to weather a nasty thunder storm.
Called on phone as got no VHF response. Mike(?) met us to help tie at their fuel dock and was extra helpful in securing our boat as the rain was falling.
Only stayed for an hour or so.
Thank you!

Stay far Away, 2014-07-30
Captain: , sebastian (10)

Stay away from this place at all costs!

The owner Doug is the most arrogant and person I have ever done business with.
If you are forced at gun point to do business with this man, here is some advise.

1. Get a written price quote up front! Doug makes up charges after the fact based on how he is feeling and how greedy he wants to be that day. ( I did not do this and was charged 13 hours labor for a job that should have took 2 and even if everything went wrong maybe 6.i was told by 3 other boat yards in the area I was screwed by him, and it was impossible that they spent that much time doing the repair, 2 of these places actually inspected the repair and said no way did it take 13 hours!)

2. Don't give any feed back about poor service. it will only make him mad and he will increase your bill!! He has no customer service skills. and he will just tell you to pay a over inflated bill and leave.

3. Don't sign a lease to keep your boat there!!
You will be charged for electric even if your boat is not plugged into shore power!!
Doug will charge you a security deposit and refuse to refund it when you leave

4. Look out for missing parts!! I had them do a bottom job and parts came up missing.
after months of asking I was told they where lost ( that was my fault because it was so long ago that they did the bottom, even though I asked repeatedly since the day the bottom was painted) So Doug offered to replace with a cheaper alternative part,
after I told him no, I wanted the same brand that was on the boat originally.
He magically found my parts, but some pieces where missing and I was CHARGED for the parts they lost!! and labor to reinstall even though It was included when I paid for the bottom job!!

Basically head north or south and you'll find many qualified boat yards that are honest and do great work for reasonable prices.

Unexpected stop on the intercoastal, 2014-07-21
Captain: , Colorado (10)

My wife & I made an unexpected stop on our trip south on the ICW. After hearing a noise coming from the engine, the same time the wind was picking up, it was getting late and time to pack it in . "Sebastian River Marina and Boat Yard" was nearby so we called them and found a very helpful hand on the other end of the phone. Her name is Angie and she very efficiantly guided us in over the phone and was at dockside when we arrived with Mike on hand for additional help. We are on a 41 foot sailboat and most marinas in the area could not accommodate our 5' draft but we were in good shape here. Since we are from out of state and needed to return soon, we decided to leave the boat with Doug, the owner of the Marina and Steve, one of the mechanics to trouble shoot the noise we were concerned about. In short, they found the problem with the prop promptly and fixed it. Since we were back in Colorado and could not return soon, we decided to have them replace old hoses and a few other repairs. We quickly found that these guys were very good at what they do. Professionals in a small and freindly Marina. They completed everything from a new aluminum tank to fiberglass work. The air conditioned restrooms and showers are upscale and cleaned daily. Angie & Doug where always willing to guide us to whatever we needed. We will stop on any trip on the ICW and will most likely store our boat there during the off season. We highly recomend "Sebastian River Marina & Boat Yard" for work on your boat, storage, or a Marina stay.

So impressed, i moved here, 2013-07-18
Captain: , sebastian (20)

I had brought my boat over for a bottom job and prop tune. I was very impressed with the knowledge base at this facility. All of Doug's staff are enthusiastic and helpfull. I was so impreesed with the service, I moved here on a permanent basis.

Sebastian area gem, 2013-05-07
Captain: , Punta Gorda, Fl (880)

This is a very hard working marina that does great service. We docked here as a transient and found some great folks. Doug Hillman is a personable guy who knows the boat business inside out. Everyone is so happy here. New marina builidng with spotless restroom/showers. Floating docks. Taxi will take you to dinner; we enjoyed Capt'n Butchers quiet deck with great food. Will try to return whenever we are in the area.

Small, Convenient and Friendly, 2013-04-26
Captain: , Vero Beach, FL (884)

We hauled out for some maintenance and repair mid-winter. No need to repeat the positive reviews; we agree with them. Steve, Mike, Burl and Sean all seem competent and cheerful. Doug, the owner, is fair and easy to deal with. This yard is a good alternative for DIY owners.
We had no trouble getting a 5' draft in and out, but keep in mind that it is a bit shallow up against the fuel dock and opposite the haul-out slip. Weather can be important: a couple of days of southerlies will blow Indian River waters north, resulting in a 1-2 feet change in depths. The enclosed basin offers shelter from waves & wakes.

Scary for a Sailboat, 2013-01-28
Captain: , Sandusky, OH (284)

An overheating engine forced us into Sebastian River Marina. With a 5' draft we barely scraped in and sat on the bottom at the fuel dock overnite. But Doug and Mike could not have been more helpful in fixing our problem. Repairs were done by the next morning and Doug brought his boat over to spin us through a very strong easterly and get us pointed out of the marina. Overall, a very pleasant and surprising stop.

Excellent boat yard, 2013-01-03
Captain: , Mystic, CT (22)

Great place for cruisers to haul out for bottom work. Owner Doug was very knowlegable, and the staff is experienced and friendly. I hauled a 36' ketch and had them paint tthe bottom while I did some other things and I am very pleased with the results. There is an excellent chandlery nearby (CARP), and the yard is very clean and well kept. Doug is very fair, and pleasant to work with. I wiil be a repeat customer, with pleasure.

Good but ....., 2012-01-27
Captain: , Bristol, RI (386)

As others have reported, Dock Master, Doug is a big help. The big problem is the access to the slips requires a 90 turn immediately upon entering and there is NO room to spare. In our 42 foot boat I made the turn ok but it was with white knuclkes in no wind conditions. If windy, don't do it. I probably will not go back. it is also not near much in the way of a town or stores or restaurants.

Great Stop-off Marina, 2011-02-16

We stayed one night here because it was getting too late to travel any further. We were hesitant to go in because iit was very tight. The crew was waiting at the gas dock to help. They held us at the dock until Doug (the owner) came along, jumped into the boat and docked it for us (fine with us ). Crew helped us to tie up and plug in the electricity. They are VERY accomadating. Doug was back the next morning when we were ready to leave to help us out.

Restrooms and showers are very clean. This was a great stop-off place for a night.

Sebastion River OK on a calm day, 2010-11-12

Very tight entry and fairways. Tried this in a 43 ft trawler in 15 to 20 knot winds. This is not for the faint of heart. If it's absolute calm may be OK but the pucker factor in a breeze is very high. Very helpful staff.

Nice marina, excellent showers and bathrooms. Had bottom done, great job. Doug is a great person and will help you out any way he can. Great protection from wind. Grocery story close enough to walk to.
