What a find! We came up the beautiful Sassafras River for the first time and decided to stay here due to AC reviews and were very happy. Docks, heads, and grounds were very neat. Joe, Susan and Delores made our stay very pleasurable and we will be back.

We stayed here for only one night but wished we had time to stay longer. Susan was friendly, helpful, informative and thorough and Joe, the owner, was eager to meet and welcome us. And, he has a first-rate marine store with equally helpful and friendly staffers. Clean grounds and nice facilities all around.

This is a truly outstanding facility run by an owner (Joe) who cares about boaters. I can highly reccomend this marina. Nice stop to escape foul weather on the bay.

I can't write enough good things about this facility and it's very concientious owner. Yes; there really is a Joe Smith!
I stopped here on my way south and hauled out for a bottom job and prop cleaning. I was very impressed by the excellent workmanship and competitive price. Joe supervised and participated in all of the work and got the job done properly and promptly. Bottom prep was 3 days and painting 2 days. Severely encrusted bow and stern thrusters were cleaned, primed and painted.
Hauled on Monday and launched on Friday!! Dockage on Friday night and underway on Saturday morning.
In addition the excellent mechanic (Paul) diagnosed and solved two mechanical issues while the bottom work was in process.
The on site marine store has every marine supply you can imagine (and can get anything else delivered in 24 hours).
The on site restaurant has excellent food and is spotless.
For variety, two other restaurants are walking distance.

World's Greatest Marine Store, 2014-11-23
Captain: , Sassafras River, MD (137)

I keep my boat at another marina in the area, only becuase I want to be near a large group of people and SHM can't accomodate all of us. But the marine store here we call the "WGMS" becuase it is, hand's down, the best marine store I have ever been to. It doesn't look like much, but they have everything you need! On the rare occasion that they don't have something, they will order it for you. Prices are very competitive too, roughly equivalent to major online sites like defender. The guys know their stuff, as they are boaters too. Before I knew how great this store was, I once spent a whole day searching the Eastern Shore for an exhaust manifold gasket for a 351 Ford. Exasperated, I tried the WGMS. In stockl $5.00. Love, love, love this place,

great place, 2014-08-01
Captain: , Somers Point, NJ (130)

We made our first trip to the Sassafras and really enjoyed it. This marina is well run, clean and very accommodating. The ship store is one of the best I've seen. The owner is a really good guy - we asked to have a pump out and he could not get to it during the day. We returned from dinner that evening to learn that he waited for us to return so that he could get us pumped out. You don't get that type of service anymore. We are definitely going back.

One of the best marinas on the Chesapeake Bay, 2014-07-29
Captain: , Bear, DE (70)

Sassafras Harbor Marina may be one of the best marinas on the Chesapeake Bay. We've kept our boats in several marinas on the bay over the past 20 years, including at Sassafras Harbor for several years. The marina is consistently fastidiously clean and well-maintained.

The open docks are floating, a relative rarity on the bay, and in excellent condition. The owner/manager of the marina is a perfectionist, and can often be seen cleaning the bathrooms himself late on a Saturday night. The grounds are nicely landscaped and in excellent condition. The marina store is fairly large and well-stocked.

The Sassafras River is one of the most beautiful on the bay, and it's always a little vacation coming here.

The marina offers full services, and the work is of high quality. Though, they frown on boat owners using outside service providers, so you have to like their services.

owner hates Sailboaters, 2014-06-05
Captain: , sassafras river, md (303)

ok maybe hate is too strong a word. however, after being a slip holder for 5 years, i moved to a place that understood sailboaters and their needs and
more importantly their mind set.

Owner LOVES all customers!, 2013-09-27
Captain: , Sassafras River (31)

SHM is a family run business for 20 years! Joe is a hands on owner that all customers can go to with any issues. This marina is one of the best run marinas around, and is constantly looking for new events to hold for their slip holders to add to their summer fun.

Best Marina on the Chesapeake, 2013-06-19

Great place..., 2012-09-11
Captain: , holland, mi (132)

After a trip up the Sassafras River, we docked at Sassafras Harbor Marina. The facilities, the docks..all top notch. Checked into having repairs done. Expecting to have to wait, Joe, the owner, went the extra mile to contact a welder and had his crew straighten the bent railing...all in the same day Real service.
With a very well stocked marine store, restaurant, and a beautiful ride up the river, don't miss this one.

Excelent staff and a safe haven, 2012-08-20
Captain: , PooleUK (933)

Having arrived from baltimore the tranquility was a blessing, well maintained docks, strong power supply and clean water. The staff are excelent and do go the extra mile to ensure your stay is as good as it can be. The marina store was a gem and the Cafe is desperatley undersold, it may be as relaxed as a cafe, but serves resturant quality food. Thank you for a very plesant stay.
Damn the mossies though...

Great destination, 2011-08-20
Captain: , Londontowne, MD (470)

We enjoyed a very leisurely three nights here. Docking on arrival was easy, given lack of current and with good, friendly help from Dolores and Ashley. Adding an extra day to our original plan was easy. The grounds are well-kept, the pool was pleasant, and showers clean. The yard was busy powerwashing and scraping/sanding boats, etc. The on-site ship's store and gift shop is well stocked. More slipholders began showing up as Friday progressed, so heavy weekend activity seemed to be the norm. There are beaches and anchorages all along the Sassafras River, and many of the beaches are within easy dinghy distance. A dinghy cruise further up river, under the bascule bridge, reveals much more to see, including at least one other working marina and waterfront housing, etc. Fuel and pump-out are available across the river at Georgetwon Yacht Basin, or further out the river at Skipjack Cove.

The floating docks are elderly and many of the finger piers and T-heads slope and slant... enough so walking like a drunken sailor seemed common, and we couldn't park the bicylces on the T-head with any certainty they'd remain standing. (During a dinghy ride, we decided the Skipjack Cove docks, even though fixed, appear to be in the best shape for this area; Georgetown Yacht Basin fixed docks are also slightly elderly, although secure enough.) The Sassafras Harbor floating docks are also close enough to the MD 213 highway/bascule bridge, that road noise and bridge noise is quite noticeable... at all hours of the night. Diesel prices were significantly higher than at our home marina at both GYB and Skipjack Cove during our visit.

The Granaray Restaurant, within easy walking distance, offers a broad menu includng great prime rib and seafood pasta, with good service. The Harbor Cafe, on-site, does good lunches and weekend breakfasts. We didn't try the Kitty Knight House restaurant across the river, but understand it's operated by the same owners as the Granary.

Hidden gem, 2011-06-28
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

A great stop. The Sassafras is a beautiful clear and fresh water river, and it is well worth the time to come up the 7 miles from the Chesapeake to stay for an overnight, or much longer. This marina has the cleanest restroom/showers we have encountered on the entire east coast. A great pool adds a nice touch. The owners meet you at the dock to help with lines, and could not be friendlier. Well worth while.

Great Marina Store Too, 2011-01-26

They have a very well stocked marina store and the prices are pretty good.

solid marina, 2010-12-23
Captain: , Georgetown, MD (30)

if you are looking for a great place to overnight or, as we do, stay all summer, this is the spot...knowledgable, helpful staff, clean and well kept...if you need a repair this is the only place I would reccomend on the river....well protected, floating docks..

GREAT stop!, 2010-07-14
Captain: , Austin, Tx (1257)

The whole stop was super. We stayed 3 nights. Clean bathroom/showers -almost best we've found. Dockhands knew what they were doing. Pumpout was already piped to the slip. Everyone helpful. Some of the seasonal slipholders were out planting even more flowers.

Relatively large, integrated facility. The owner was there working from 7:00am till 9.00 pm.

We'll be back

Nice, friendly bar/restaurant that is never too crowded. With reasonable priced fare. The crabcakes are very good as is the view up the river at sunset. We usually pull up the the fuel dock and tie up and walk up to the restaurant deck. sometimes music on saturday night.
