Reviews for Samos Marina - Pythagorio
Depends what you're looking for, 2016-07-16
Captain: , Swanwick UK (515)

We are winterising our 12m yacht here over the winter of 2015-2016 - we read up online and it seems that the marina made some bad business decisions in the last few years in terms of pricing and has lost most of it's permanent boats. As a result, all the facilities which are "supposed" to be there - yacht club, swimming pool, chandlery, shopping - are pretty much closed down and out of business - and the marina itself is pretty empty!

There is a supermarket/combined chandlery - but this closed on 3rd October for the winter so we never had any opportunity to see how good it was. There is one small taverna and a cafe/bar and an on-water fuel pontoon where the diesel was cheap compared to other places this summer.

Pythagoreo itself is a nice lively town with lots of restaurants and a pleasant sea front/quayside - it is a 15 minute walk across the pathway (which as mentioned before DOES also get the occasional car so be careful!) - you need a torch but it's not a bad walk - and I'm really not into walking generally.

The marina staff were extremely pleasant, friendly and helpful when we arrived and we have paid just over 2000 euros for 12m x 4m sailyacht for 8 months contract on hard standing including lift and launch with a few days on water each end. This is less than half what we were quoted by several nearby marinas in both Turkey and Greece - but about the same as we've paid in other areas.

UPDATE - as promised an update after the winter! It's ok here as long as you don't need anything done. The mechanical service on site is a good guy - very helpful and able to ship things we needed from Athens very quickly. Price was a bit steep. Beware if you ask the marina to carry out work such as polishing or cleaning - ask for a price BEFORE you get the work done as they are trying to balance their low storage charges with exceptionally high charges for additional work. Not sure where the guy who reviewed a few days after us found the shop open - we went there and were asked to leave as they were closing down and removing all the stock in October!!! They did open at the end of June once we returned but did not have much available. However hire a car and go to the LIDL in Vathy - or other supermarkets and you'll find all you need. Chandlery on site has very limited stock - but a good hardware store just before you get to Vathy - and also a chandlery in the main town who is very helpful. Fantastic guys at DINOS car rental in the main street of the town - would recommend them highly. We won't be coming back to Samos - it was OK but we need a bit more than this from our over-winter place. Price wise it was not any cheaper than we've paid before in the Ionian or Turkey.

Toilet and shower facilities aren't great but the pontoons are new, in good condition and electrical supply and water is also good. There is a coin operated laundry but as I have my own washing machine onboard I haven't used this so can't comment if it's any good (an essential need when winterising of course!). Big open spaces where we'll be able to wash and fold our sails right behind the boat.

Oh - and the previous review is absolutely right ... the WiFi is TERRIBLE! (But we have our own 4G card so don't need that either).

So ... if you're looking for a good place to be for a few days - I would go to the town quay in Pythagoreo itself but if you're looking for over-winter storage without being onboard, this looks like it is going to be a good option at a very good price - just make sure you buy any supplies chandlery wise before you arrive. (Will leave another review after the winter if it isn't!!).

they change the price and road for city centre, 2015-10-06

This is a good marina by Greek standards. Power and water pedestals work (and are included in the price). There are toilets and showers (2 showers for men, 4 for women). The grocery store on site is above average, its close between 15.00-18.00. It is a reasonable walk (500 meters) in to Pythagorio. (they open new walk road to the city centre) The price is a goog in my opinion (35 euros / night for a 12,90 meter boat). The staff is helpfull.

Good marina and reasonable prices., 2015-07-19

Near to the second biggest city of the island. You can hire a scooter from there. Marina office helps for all your needs. Not easy to walk to the city (hilly). For a catamaran 42ft 53 euro/day.

Expensive and poor service, 2014-10-26

2014 September city-harbour is full, so we stay in Samos Marina. It cost 45 Euro a night. The WLAN is worse and showers/toilets are in poor conditions. Only the apply service is good. From Marina to the city there is a pedestrain way (but there are also cars using it). I can't recommend Samos Marina.

This is a good marina by Greek standards. Power and water pedestals work (and are included in the price). There are toilets and showers (2 showers for men, 4 for women). The grocery store on site is above average. It is a reasonable walk (500 meters) in to Pythagorio. The price is a bit high in my opinion (32 euros / night for a 9.5 meter boat). The staff is helpfull.

When the meltemi is rattling the rigging it is a good place to tie up and relax.
