Reviews for Sailcraft Service Boatyard
Good work but be careful of cost escalation!, 2017-08-09
Captain: , Green Cove Springs FL (32)

I arrived a day early and they were able to accomodate my early arrival by tieing me along side another boat in preparation for haul out the next morning.

I had called ahead and gotten a quote for bottom painting including two coats of Pettit SR that was very reasonable. I also needed to have a mechanic change a cooling water hose I could not reach.

I learned they have a boat carpenter on staff. The carpenter was able to fix a separation of the teak and holly salon floor from the plywood subfloor. Six months later it is still perfect. I am very happy with the result.

They have an excellent welder on staff who repaired an aluminimum grab rail on the swim platform and made a cap for the top of the mast. Excellent work.

Their mechanic broke the oil supply hose to the injection pump while replacing a water coolant hose. Allen, the owner, did not want pay for the replacement oil supply hose. He finally did, but after an un-necessary argument.

After hauling out, I asked them to lightly sand the bottom before painting and was told they always scraped the bottom to remove barnical traces. The last time the bottom was cleaned before painting was in Annapolis where they sanded which took 2.5 hours at $75 per hour. Here they had two men hand scraping the bottom with 2 inch wide scrapers for two and a half days days. I assumed these must be low wage workers. WRONG! I was billed for 20 hours of work at $80 per hour.

I paid staggering bill and despite the elcellent work of the carpenter and welder will not be back.

Captain: , Cardiff (20)

Hauled out at Sailcraft Oct 2016 to avoid hurricane Matthew and the boat over-wintered here. She was very well looked after by Alan and his team. Friendly helpful and some excellent workmanship. One of the best boatyards we've used in the last nine years of owning this boat

Knowledgeable staff, 2017-06-03
Captain: , Collegeville Pa (152)

This a good yard with great technical resources that allows you to do as much of the work or as little of the work as you like. Since they are a good yard, at times they can get very busy so their resources will get spread thin and some jobs can get held up. Overall a good yard with fair prices.

Great customer service. Top notch expertise!, 2017-05-23
Captain: , Hull, MA (40)

Came here upon recommendation of some fellow cruisers. WHAT A FIND! Allen was helpful and available despite running a very busy yard. Any of your boats needs can be met, here. We had some engine work, a new coupling/shaft seal (customized by Jim (resident mechanical wizard)) done here. One of the really nice things about Sailcraft is that they allow you do as little or as much of your own work as you'd like and are always willing to discuss your projects with you.
The staff are friendly, helpful, and very skilled. The way in can be a bit shallow but is well worth any grounding headaches. The bottom is pretty slippery mud. We were able to extricate ourselves with no real hassle (we draw 5' or so).
There is a free vehicle to use whenever staff aren't doing yard business with it. In fact, when I had to go to an appt, the truck was taken, so another cruiser gave me a ride to it and they arranged for staff member Dan to pick me up afterward. They really go above and beyond to be helpful.
Near to the Piggly Wiggly, good restaurants (great pizza at Silos plus live music) and a reasonable walk to downtown Oriental. Don't miss this place if you're nearby

Excellent Service and Workers, 2017-04-28
Captain: , Marathon, FL (496)

On our way north this Spring, it was time to have our boat bottom repainted. Our requirements were to live on the boat in the yard and do part of the work ourselves. I called 7 marinas from Titusville to Norfolk and was very impressed with Sailcraft in Oriental. Number one, someone always answered the phone when I called. Shannon (the office administrator) was very knowledgable and quickly answered all of my questions. Secondly, their quoted prices were very reasonable. For example, we wanted to have the boat bottom "rough" sanded before we painted. I had a quote from another marina in Georgia for $800. Shannon agreed with me that it should take about a little over 2 hours per side and they charged $80 / hour labor. The final bill for sanding was 5 hours - $320.

They also have a large selection of paints and will match the West Marine prices PLUS they will put the cans in a shaker so they are ready when you need them and only charge for what you use. We used 3.75 gallons and that was what we were charged for.

This boatyard is next to / part of Sailcraft Marina so you have all of the goodies - air-conditioned showers, pool, picnic area with grill. All very nice.

I have worked with over 20 boat yards over the years and can honestly say Sailcraft is in the top 2. Alan, the owner, is professional, friendly and always seems to be around when you have a question. For example, after 5 days on-the-hard we were launched and tied up on the bulkhead to clean up and make sure everything on the boat was working. Other yards would give you a time limit or not allow this at all. Alan told us to stay as long as we wanted and even offered hooking us up to shore power while we were cleaning. When we were ready to go, I found him in the yard and thanked him for the great job. He then said, "If you are ready to leave, I'll come help you off the dock." Awesome customer service. We'll be back!

As Good as it Gets, 2017-01-21
Captain: , Annapolis (141)

Stopped at Sailcraft on my way down the ICW for a shaft seal issue. The mechanic, Jim expertly diagnosed and fixed a long-standing problem that had defied previous mechanics and surveyers.

This is an outstanding yard. All of the senior crew are personalble, knowledgeable, and highly conscientious. The work of junior crew is carefully supervised and checked, unusual for almost any yard. Rates are fair and work is done efficiently and on time.

The yard is a short walk to Piggly Wiggly, the post office, and a few restaurants. They also have a pickup truck that you're free to use when it is not out on yard business.

I will be back to Sailcraft when it's time for a major refit. It's that kind of yard.

Exceptional Boatyard, 2016-11-24
Captain: , New Bern, NC (171)

SailCraft is by far the best boatyard we have been to - and we have been to a few. We just spent 2 weeks there having several issues on the boat addressed - including removal of a genset, some issues with the rudder, and replacement of several through-hulls. Also had some work done at the top of the mast. Alan and his crew were very professional and courteous and completed all work when promised. Only downside is the channel in, which can be a problem for deeper draft boats. There are plans underway to dredge...

Expert, friendly, helpful, 2016-11-17
Captain: , Fort Pierce, FL (20)

I came in with a damaged furler, giving them almost no notice during the busy season. Never a complaint or criticism from them. Friendly and helpful - Shannon in the office, Alan, and all the crew. Patient and answered all of my questions, gave great advice on a variety of topics. Acquired a hard-to-find part, did things whne they said they would. Fantastic. Wish I could take my boat there for every service and repair.

Deep draft boats, check water levels before going. You may touch bottom in 6 feet or less. North wind helps the depth.

Excellent Service Facility, 2016-10-22
Captain: , Knoxville (70)

We stopped here to have the bottom painted and discovered we had an issue with the shaft and strut, and the transmission. Alan and all of his crew were the best team to work with I have ever experienced. They are knowledgeable, consciencous, and friendly. They take time to understand your issues and come up with the best solution. Rates are fair and reasonable. I will definitely stop here again.

Being chased by Hermine, 2016-09-03
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (45)

Allen was very helpful in giving us an immediate haul-out to swap a prop on my Viking so we could get back underway and beat the storm up to the Chesapeake Bay. Highly recommend except for the shallow approach. Channel should be dredged and marked better than it is. If it's you're first time in, you might as well call the TowBoat US guy that lives there and offer him $50 to escort you in. If you don't, you'll be calling him after you run aground.

Great yard, very friendly city, 2016-04-12
Captain: , Buck Hbr, Me (50)

We stayed here last fall and were very pleased, especially with Alan, the ringmaster, and Dan, the Man of Metal. We had a freak fracture at the top of a stainless lifeline stanchion. Dan filled the crack and buffed her down to where the repair was indiscernible. Fairly priced and friendly. We would return.

We use this boat yard almost exclusively, 2015-08-12
Captain: , Oriental, N.C. (111)

We have moored our boat in Oriental for about 5 years and have used Sailcraft for most of that time. From bottom painting to engine repairs to rudder repairs to tank replacement. The work has been excellent. Daryl is an outstanding mechanic, and Alan is an upstanding, trustworthy yard boss. I was disappointed to learn, from the last review, that their rigger, Mark, has left them. He is a really great sail rigger. Hopefully, they will get back together again.

Good place to refit, 2015-05-17
Captain: , New Bern (318)

I was here for over a year doing a major refit and was very happy overall. The best of both worlds in having a DIY yard that also has a full team of solid tradesmen on-site. Whether here or across the creek at Deatons, Oriental is a great place if you're looking to refit a boat.

My only beef was getting caught in the middle of some personal stuff between Alan, the yard manager, and the old rigger. Things came to a head and Alan ended up letting some personal bs get in the way of an otherwise very professional and well run yard.

This seems somewhat unique to my situation and the relationship I had with both parties before they parted ways, so I hesitate to try and scare anyone off based on my experience. It would be nice though if Alan and the rigger, Mark Lucas, could establish a working relationship moving forward, as both do excellent work.

Great Mechanic, 2015-05-15
Captain: , Rowayton, CT (181)

We are back at Sailcraft for the fourth time. Usually we just stay a few days to see friends. We have had them do work for us before and it was excelent. This time, we came in because our shaft seal had started to really leak when we reved the engine way up, so we wanted Sailcraft to install and ne shaft seal. They did that in a very timely manner. When we were put back in the water they checked the alingment etc and all was good. However later in the day, when we were running the engine to turn on the engine compressor for the fridge, we heard the same noise coming from the mounting barcket we had heard when in the Bahamas and I thought I had fixed it. Darrell, the mechanic looked at the bracket and determined that it needed to be worked on as it had cracked. Two days later he had a new one fabricated with much stronger details that would prevent the mount from cracking again. Once it was installed, we ran the engine again to re-check the alignment etc. Then he noticed a very small oil leak from our fitting where the remote oil filter attaches to the main engine. He had the fixed within two more hours. I am going on too long; but, I just want to show how thorough Darrell is. I doubt one could fine a better mechanic anywhere up and down the east coast.

This is a Real Boatyard., 2015-01-21
Captain: , Saint Michaels (320)

The crew here, as the crew at Deaton's accross the channel, can do just about anything you need done. I was impressed with their professionalism. They are very friendly to boot.

This is a place that cruisers might come to if they need some work done or if they just want a spot off the beaten path.

You can walk to town.

Great service, quality work, excellent support, 2014-12-04
Captain: , Fairbanks, Alaska (40)

The Sailcraft crew has been great to work with and I recommend them without any reservations. They pulled and stored my boat last spring on short notice, taking care of all the details for me. When I returned this fall, they provided excellent quality work and valuable support for the projects I did myself. Their pricing is fair and the work and service is friendly, timely, and professional. Thanks Alan and staff!

Thumbs up to Sailcraft team, 2014-11-16
Captain: , Toronto (52)

We recently stopped at Sailcraft in Oriental and couldn't have been happier. Alan and his team were superb! From the help we received from the girls in the office, to the individual talents demonstrated on the job they did on our keel....we were very pleased. Their travel lift is equipped to handle larger sailboats where some of the other boatyards cannot. We were on the hard for 2 weeks....and were well looked after. Alan kept us informed every step of the way as to what was happening next. He is a fabulous project manager with a strong team :) He is not the owner who just sits in his office...he is very professional, organizedand involved in steps along the way.

Beyond Outstanding! , 2014-10-25
Captain: , Carter Lake (20)

Alan and every single person we dealt with are role model professionals. On one day notice, our Stamas 44 ketch was hauled, pressure washed and blocked for a couple of days while we painted the bottom. They provided every conceivable help for our stay including prop primer and paint and a last minute ball valve and thru hull replace. The bill was LESS than budgeted!

The best crew I've ever met, 2014-09-20
Captain: , Palmetto, FL (504)

This is by far the best boatyard from here to New England. The prices are more than fair and the work is not only A+, it's done timely too! The owner, Alan, is out there getting dirty every day with hiscrew but will always take the time to walk over and ask how you're doing. Darryl is a genius with mechanicals and Dan the fabricator makes fast pretty work with anything stainless. I wish I could giveit 6 stars.

Great Boatyard, 2014-08-29
Captain: , Oriental,NC (588)

Fully capable boatyard where you are also allowed to work on DIY projects. Entire staff is very helpful, and the owner Alan will take good care of you.

Excellent service, fair price, 2014-07-14
Captain: , Bethlehem, PA (736)

Had the boat hauled for a problem, quickly diagnosed and fixed, also had painting done and electrical problem resolved. Fair pricing and completed when they said they would. Back in the water in two days. Marina is nice with air-conditioned bath/shower faciilties and a nice pool. Laundry is adequate at best. Very happy with service and stay at Sailcraft Service.

Good Experience, 2014-06-26
Captain: , Baltimore, MD (80)

Recently had my boat pulled for keel repair and sea cock replacement. Also got bottom cleaned and two coats of new paint. Very happy with work, staff and facilities. They make you feel like they really appriciate your business. I highly recommend Sailcraft and will be back. Thank you Alan and Staff.

Fantastic for rigging repairs, 2014-06-26
Captain: , wensleydale (940)

I walked in carrying a damaged mast lower-stay and walked out barely an hour later with a new one at what I thought was a very reasonable price

Best we've found, 2013-12-08
Captain: , White Bear Lake, MN (100)

Ok, we're going to pile-on to the other reviews. Needed prop cleaning and bottom paint, nothing serious, just routine. Came here, got the work done with more than fair pricing, excellent workmanship and care, final bill exactly what Alan estimated/quoted. With 13 years of cruising some 40,000+ miles, countless marinas and dozens of service yards, Alan and crew gets 10 stars! Alan listens and explains the work they will do. You will feel like family when you leave.

Great service!, 2013-11-20
Captain: , annapolis (10)

Wow. They mean service. Quick and responsive, reasonable and you can do as much or little of the work as you want. Truly a gem in Oriental, we'll be back. Thanks Alan!

Best Service EVER!!!, 2013-10-30
Captain: , Bristol, RI (386)

ALLEN, the owner, met us as we were docking and assisted with lines, elec cord, etc. He had the mechanic on board within 15 minutes of our arrival. The mechanic, DERRYL, dianosed the generator over heating problem and fixed it within 30 minutes. We departed next morning at first light and again ALLEN was there to see us off. I was blown away by the GREAT SERVICE. And the charges were very reasonable.

Engine Replacement for 30' Pearson, 2013-09-15
Captain: , North Myrtle Beach (10)

For the best service anyone could ask for at the right price, where you get unprecedented craftsmanship, no surprises, and always someone to answer your questions, Sailcraft Services is worth the trip. When they repair something it will be right and you will not have to worry about Sailcraft's work getting you to your destination or back to home port.

They responded when needed, 2013-07-26
Captain: , San Juan Capistrano, CA (120)

Caught a line on both props and shafts in Oriental harbor. The other two boat yards were short handed or did not have the lift capability. Called Alan and he said he could squeeze me in. Let me use the yard van to get a prop to Bull's in Beaufort (who fixed it whle we waited). Better than average boatyard facilities and they let you stay aboard while work is being done (Deaton's next store doesn't). Have pool & showers on site. Andy worked through lunch to get coupler fixed. Had the machine shop (Dan) modify some hardware I was installing - no charge.

Outstanding services, 2013-06-20
Captain: , Oriental, NC (34)

Recently had a major refit with a lot of new running rigging. And a bit of work on my instruments. A++++.

I'm a local...I'm not connected with Sailcraft... and I now use them for most everything. Very helpful staff.

Fabulous marina, 2013-03-10
Captain: , Bucks Harbor Maine (50)

We stopped here during the Fall migration South. From the moment they guided us into the travel lift for a short haul to the time when they put us back in the water the staff here were all superbly knowledgeable, hard working, friendly, and accommodating. We could not ask for more. The cherry picker for repairing our masthead tricolor was superb bonus. The bill for everything was less than we expected with very reasonable rates and low markups. We were delighted and will definitely return.

I just had some mainatnence work done, along with having a dinged prop rebuilt (Big Rock Props in Morehead City)...Sailcraft's work was top shelf, Alan, Darryl, Bob, and Shannon kept me informed all the way through and met all the deadlines...They will see the Mazel Tug again (hopefully not too soon, though)...

I've had a lot of bad experiences with boatyards. Imagine my surprise when (GASP) I find a competent yard with friendly folks ready to get the job done at a fair price.
Don't hesitate to use them.

what good luck, 2012-11-14
Captain: , deltaville, virginia (70)

had a 'NEW' noise in the prop area coming down the ICW, stopped in for a quick haul, found a bent prop, they removed the prop then, sent it out that afternoon and back on my way in two, friendly and fair

Great place for any work, 2012-06-14
Captain: , Fort Pierce, Florida (369)

Stopped by for routine mantenance on engine, and had a list. Mechanic told us we didn't need everything and suggested we not do unnecessaary work. They could have done it and charged us more, but didn't. Great service and great guys. Will definitley have any other work done by this business!

Great DIY yard, 2012-01-10
Captain: , GREEN COVE SPRINGS, FL (736)

Spent 5 weeks on the hard there a couple of years ago. Found Alan (owner) and all staff to be friendly, competent, and very supportive. I did a lot of work myself, contracted some. The availability of supplies and tools at very reasonable rates was great!
Highly recommend.

Great Place, 2011-11-20
Captain: , Deltaville, Va. (210)

We hauled out here for a week this fall and had a very good experience. Granted, we're do it yourself-ers but they were very accommodating and provided lots of advice. Sailcraft even rents items like rollers, buffers etc to help folks who want to do their own work. We did get good advice from the employees when we needed some direction. Walking distance to grocery and West Marine. Yard also has bikes to use to get to town. Alan is a great asset and his yard is fantastic.

They do great work... but..., 2011-10-03
Captain: , Between Boats, USA (623)

We have spent over two years doing semi-yearly haul-outs at Sailcraft. There guys do great work and always seem to go the extra mile. It's a good place to do your own work and the yard dawgs will help you with a project any way they can.

However, make sure you ask LOTS of questions about the work and the charges associated with that work. Also, check your bill before you pay it. Three trips there in two years and all three times we have had issues with the billing. I don't think it is done intentionally or with malice, but if you are really watching the budget closely as we do, even small discrepancies are upsetting.

Unfortunately, we feel we must look at options for next year.

Haulout Service, 2011-09-23
Captain: , New Bern, NC (128)

We spent our first year in the area hauling out at Sailcraft and turned out to be a diamond in the rough. A family run yard with all the capabilities most boaters need to work on there boats. They went through the recent hurricane Irene without and real damage to all the boats they stored. I highly recommend them!

Great service!!, 2010-05-09
Captain: , Key West, FL (758)

When another yard could not help with a weld repair of our exhaust elbow on a Saturday, the guys at SailCraft, having been referred by JC at River Dunes, stepped in, worked with the other yard to transport the elbow by ferry, held the welder and installation guys over for us and got the whole thing done expertly and efficiently and at a great price. This is the kind of service and commitment that builds great businesses. Send your business to these guys and you'll be doing all of us a service, while "taking care of business" for yourself at the same time.

excellent service, 2010-04-24
Captain: , Worton (445)

Bent my prop going through the swamp. Al and his crew took excellent care of us in a very timely fashion. Two workers stayed late friday night to finish the job. Very professional yard.

Great service, everything you need.., 2009-07-01
Captain: , Vandemere NC (418)

Good yard, helpful and friendly people. They will go out of their way to help. Prices are fair, and if they aren't a dealer for equipment, they know who is and will put you in contact with them. Excellent woodworker if you have any teak repair.

Top Notch, 2008-12-28
Captain: , Oriental, NC (231)

Since purchasing our 42-ft Beneteau in March 2007, we have used Sailcraft exclusively and found them to be honest, reliable and very competent. Their prices for labor and materials are in line with other boatyards, plus they allow DIYers and living aboard while your boat is in the yard. Their technicians seem happy to offer advice without the meter running even when you plan to do the work yourself.

Great Service!, 2008-10-27
Captain: , Coan River Marina (40)

I have only (so far) used Sailcraft Services for one job, but I was most impressed with their service and attention to detail. I was allowed to live on board my boat while it was being worked on at no docking cost and given free use of all facilities including rest rooms, shower and laundry. Very frendly and helpfull people!
