Reviews for River Forest Marina
Clean, Free Laundry!, 2016-11-18
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (360)

I have to say when a marina offers laundry within the price of the stay it is just awesome. A clean boat is a happy boat! We stopped here since we needed to use the internet and the wifi reaches inside the boat. The dock is pilings but we were greeted and our lines were tied up for us. Front door service :) The grocery is a little over a mile away and walking is easy or they also offer a golf cart so you can stock up on things. The bathrooms are very clean and huge! You can do cartwheels in them. Well maybe two. If you stay here you will not be disappointed. Enjoy!

busy time., 2016-11-13
Captain: , Annapolis,MD (70)

We entered Bellhaven with 2 other motoryachts, and all three were going to Riverforest. With just 2 employees they handled all three of us with ease, and devoted time to make sure we all knew the same amenties. A for sure stop in the spring

First rate facility, 2016-11-13
Captain: , Rock Hall, MD (340)

We stopped in here on 11/8 with another sailing yacht. It was our first time here. Henry and the dockhand got both of us tied up and secure quickly and professionally and were very pleasant to boot. The facilities here are excellent. The awesome free laundry and the super clean restooms and showers made us wish we could stay longer. We took advantage of the free golf cart usage to head into the grocery store for provisions. The entrance is easy in and out so there's really nothing negative about this place. Our only regret is we didn't get to tour the manor house because they were setting up for a surprise birthday party. But we'll schedule more time here in the spring to take care of that.

nice and quite, 2016-11-06
Captain: , Lighthouse Point, Fl (320)

Very nice marina. I must say I was only going to give a 4 star review BUT they have the cleanest nicest laundry room!!! New 3 kenmore industrial washers and dryer machines. They are free as well. They were the perfect size for doing bedings. They owner came down to meet and greet with a tying person. They have 3 golf carts to go downtown for dinner. I made a silky comment that there was a little bird poop and within a hour there was a deck hand pressure cleaning...how's that for service. We ended up staying 2 nights just because of the good service. No pool but the temp was 52 so who cares. Lol. Henry owner manager was extremely helpful. Will be back. If you want fancy not the place if you want quite and helpful you got it.

Best shower and laundry facility, 2016-11-04
Captain: , Wanakena, NY (619)

If you want some of the best washing and drying machines, you'll love these new HE Kenmore large machines. You can do a week of laundry in them. All cycles take at least 1hour or more. There are 3 of each. Two showers with toilets serve the marina. They are overly large, newly modeled and clean. A freshly washed bath mat is placed in the room daily. Eddie and Henry are extremely helpful. Eddie will go out of his way to assist you with docking, fill ups, or pump outs. Which I must say are both done at your slip, sweet! The marina was purchased 2 years ago and has done many upgrades. The docks havent been addressed so they are old. We saw many large boats of 55 feet and up pull in and dock, all side two tie ups. We were placed in a traditional slip with a beam of 15.6. We barely fit iwith just a few inches to spare. Eddie and Henry did offer to move us, but we did not feel we would gain enough space to make it worthwhile. We believe they needed to save the side two spots for the larger boats. That was our only disappointment. Another nice touch was receiving a welcome packet from the Chamber of Commerce with a welcoming letter offering to pick up guests and drive them to the Food Lion Grocery store. Also mentioned places to walk and exercise at a gym for a reduced and fair price. Sorry to say we didn't have time to take advantage of this offer. We truly enjoyed our stay and recommend making a stop here.

What's not to like!, 2016-10-14
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (420)

Free laundry, wifi, and golf cart. laundry the nicest we have seen in a marina. Staff very helpful and professional. Spoonriver restaurant is not to be missed.

Stayeda again 10/13/16. Same comments. Went to Spoonriver for opening night after Hurricane Matthew. When we expressed disappointment on our entree the owners went beyond any expectations to make us happy. Will return to both locations.

Nice Place to Stay, 2016-08-15
Captain: , Forest Lake, MN (80)

We spent 3 nights here - Henry & Eddie were great, the use of the golf carts was wonderful, FREE laundry can't be beat!
Definitely will return.

WOW!! Amazing place, 2016-08-03
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (40)

This place was great. I dont know how it used to be but we stayed an extra night just because. The docks are older and fixed so make sure you use fenders. Eddie helped us get tied off. Henry, the dockmaster, is a joy to talk to and even arranged for me to tour the Manor (Thanks Montana!!). Restrooms and showers are extremely clean. Laundry was free which was great as were golf carts. It was nice to have golf carts but it is not a problem to walk to the downtown area. Restaurants have great food but none have outdoor seating/dog friendly (except for Farm Boys, which we did not eat at). The manor is absolutely spectacular. If you can tour it I would highly recommend it! Great job on the remodel!

Excellent Stop, 2016-07-18
Captain: , Rockport, ON, Canada (265)

I have never stopped here before but wouldn't hesitate to stop again. Facilities perfect, staff couldn't be more helpful, renovations of the manor are spectacular. Henry and Eddy are great helpers. If you need to shop they have free golf carts for the taking.

Very friendly , 2016-07-17
Captain: , Nicholasville, Ky (40)

Had planned to stop here anyway, but hit a deahead in the Pungo River Canal. Henry had two divers names. Used Daniel Brinn, great young man who changed both my props first thing next morning.

Spoon River was good. Food above average but service was slow. Really appreciated the free golf carts at the marina. Nice clean little town.

Fixed docks were a little rough, otherwise nice place. Wife like the laundry.

Great Time - 07/08/2016, 2016-07-08
Captain: , Stuart, Florida (50)

We stayed overnight and had a wonderful experience.
Navigating in is very easy. Make a 90 degree turn just past breakwater and well marked poles guide you right in.
Dock workers very friendly and helpful in getting settled.

Took the golf cart to town and the Food Lion for supplies. Also made a reservation at Spoon River which I'm told is not to be missed. There are several other restaurants/bars in town also.
The WiFi is great.
Town's a pretty easy walk if you dont want to ride.
Free, high quality laundry.

Showers for guests only, 2016-06-22
Captain: , Delaware City, DE (154)

Showers are for marina guests only.

Much Better Than We Expected, 2016-06-20
Captain: , Jamestown, RI (80)

As others nave noted, the new management has made a positive difference. We stayed one night in June of 2016. Friendly helpful dock staff, inexpensive diesel and reasonable rates for dockage ($1.50 per foot), spotless, air conditioned restrooms and showers, free laundry (also air conditioned), free courtesy golf cart. There is no restaurant, but less than 10 minutes away by golf cart is the Spoon River Artworks and Market, a truly fine dining experience at modest prices.

Things are improving, 2016-06-06
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (1134)

New ovnership is making serious effort to regain the cruisng community. Friendly, compentent dock staff. Good power and nice amenities, including access to a golf cart to go to town. No onsite restaurant.

M/Y STARR. May 23, 2016, 2016-05-24
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (40)

Many improvements. New restrooms and laundry facilities. Free golf carts to go to town. Friendly and knowledgable dock master, Henry Boyd. Very fair dockage and fuel prices. At least a 4 star marina.

Great Stop, Good Marina, 2016-05-20
Captain: , Solomons, MD (882)

We stop every time we go past Belhaven so we can go to Spoon River. Previously we have anchored, this year we decided to try River Forest.

It had excellent laundry facilities and we really liked the availability of the golf carts. We had good weather while there, but it is possible that in windy conditions, the slips may be somewhat exposed. The dock hands are great in tying you up, but need a little practice in exzpalining where they want you to go.

Great Staff but Exposed Location, 2016-05-13
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (95)

Marina has a very narrow approach through shoals. Clean facilities, including practically new laundry. Free golf carts for shopping and dining downtown. Highly exposed to W and NW winds. We awoke at 5am pinned to the dock with shifting fenders against pilings.

Great Place but pretty skinny water, 2016-05-12
Captain: , Charleston SC (733)

This place is amazing. Wonderful spacious showers, a free Laundry with state of the art, clean machines. Free dock carts to get into town and a great wifi connection. Henry is a real gentleman and very knowlegable about the local waterways and history.

This will be a must stop for us even though we have really enjoyed anchoring out at the end of the Pungo Alligator canal in past years

Water at the auxilliary dock is pretty thin; we are seeing 6.2 ft as I write. If you are a deep draft vessell= (we are 5' 9" , 48 ft x 14.5 ft ketch) you would probably be better off on the main dock if there is room. The staff was very good about helping us dock and their instructions were clear about avoiding a shoal just seaward of the auxilliary dock.

Much Improved, 2016-05-11
Captain: , East Falmouth, MA (1533)

The last time I was here was in 1999 and the place was a dump so I was reluctant to stop again but a fellow boater wanted to stop here so we did. The docks aren't the best, but seemed to be in good condition. The launndry and restrooms were clean and modern. The loaner golf carts were very good, and Henry the dockmaster was especially friendly and helpful. It is on the rise.

Wonderful new place for us!, 2016-05-10
Captain: , North Palm Beach, FL (450)

River Forest, new to us, was a great find. Henry and Eddie took good care of us in the 30 knot westerly winds and the complimentary golf carts are above and beyond!
Great new showers and facilities-can't wail until the manor opens up.
Peter & Anne on ARIES

Doing all the right things, 2016-05-08
Captain: , Eastport, MD (491)

We stopped primarily because over half dozen trips up and down the ICW we had never been to Belhaven. Other reviews sung the praises of Spoon River restaurant (well deserved as we found out).

The marina was purchased after previously going out of business and it seems they're doing all the right things to make it a viable stop. Fuel and pumpout at the slip, well marked entrance channel, one dock replaced, the other (which we were on) is yet to be done, but we've been on worse. On shore facilities were quite nice - free laundry, nice head/shower facility, good wifi. Yes, they're a few block walk to "downtown" which was good for us - needed the exercise. But to address that they make golf carts available should you desire to ride instead of walk. We used one to go to the grocery store so everything worked great for us.

River Forest and Spoon River, 2016-05-05
Captain: , Sandwich (692)

We returned to dine at Spoon River. it's a must for all Mariners traveling the Pungo River. The restaurant ambiance enchanting and the hostess/owner Theresa gracious. Fine wine and dining in the little town of Belhaven.

Dock Master Henry a real delight. Bath facilities are clean and the laundry is a courtesy of the marina. Courtesy golf carts available to take to Food Lion. Easy walk into town. The River Forest Manor has completed renovations. Beautiful 1899 Victorian mansion is the grand dame on the Pungo.

Enjoyed the marina and the town, 2016-05-02
Captain: , Galesville, MD (1067)

Stayed on a nice new dock with good electric, water, and wifi services. Entrance is well marked and no problems for our 6' draft. Helpful and friendly staff. New laundry (free). Gulf carts to borrow though the walk to town is short and pleasant. Spoon River continues to be a favorite restaurant of ours (suggest calling for a reservation). Odd museum. Good hardware store. Grocery is a bit out of town - very long walk. Gulf cart is an option. When we wanted to walk, we had to turn down offers for rides. What's not to like?

River Forest Marina is being polished into a jem!, 2016-04-27
Captain: , Chattanooga (220)

With a 100 year old manor house as a backdrop this Marina oozes charm. The owner, Henry, is one of the happiest friendly people we have met on our entire voyage. The showers are brand new, the new laundry is complimentary. Dinner at "Spoon River" in town was also the best of our voyage. Don't miss it. The golf cart ride to Food Lion was fun ( along the state highway). Evidence everywhere of improvements to the Marina...landscaping, paving, painting. These guys are building something special in a special place.

So difficult to rate, 2016-04-26
Captain: , Iuka, MS (1120)

Very heartening to see all the work the new owners have done to reopen this marina. Great service, new baths, and free laundry. Unfortunately, the docks are still well-worn and the electric wasn't usable, but we were charged for it. Spoon River Art restaurant is on of the gems along the AICW. We were lucky to get seated on a Monday night without a reservation! Golf carts are a nice plus and indispensable if needing to get to the grocery. We'll be back because it's clear the management is intent on getting everything right here.

will stay again, 2016-04-18
Captain: , King George (107)

We stayed over on the way south and all is the same as the reviewers have already posted. Very well staffed and attentave to cruiser and sailor needs.

What an improvement, 2016-04-18
Captain: , Kingston, Ontario (90)

We were last here in 2010. It was pretty run down then. Heard that there were new owners, so decided to give it a try. Vast improvement; prompt service, very clean showers/toilets, fuel and pump out at your dock, golf carts to go into town, etc. Will recommend it to others.
We needed groceries, since our last stop, Oriental, was very difficult to get to a grocery store. The Food Lion in Belhaven was quite good and very reachable by golf cart.

Great Place, 2016-04-17
Captain: , Boyd, Texas (390)

Free laundry & golf carts. Friendly and attentive dockmaster. Town loves and supports cruisers. great place to visit.

first timer, good fuel prices, 2016-04-16
Captain: , Chesapeake Beach, MD 20732 (190)

Been to Belhaven 5 times before and gotten fuel at River Forest before so just easier to stay there this time. Fixed docks can be tricky with tides, but good diesel fuel prices.
They let us use a golf cart to get around town a big benefit. The about the only close resturant in town is very good. I'd come back. The town now gives you a welcome package.

A Hidden Charm!, 2016-04-06
Captain: , Galesville, MD (80)

We were so glad to be back! Henry was at the dock with that big, friendly smile and got us situated at the dock. The service he provides is great; and to see the progress at the Manor House and listen to him talk about how proud he and others are is great. As others have said, where else do you have a great dock master, free laundry facilities and a golf cart! Also, recommendation to dine at the Spoon River restaurant where we ate the best gourmet dinner of our entire trip! We were glad we had to stay for two days due to weather!

Great Facelift, 2016-03-15
Captain: , Sanibel (195)

We were there 3-13-16. It has been a long time since we visited and things could not be better. New management has done a great job, new restrooms, free laundry, golf carts for shopping. The Manor is not yet done but it is great to see it being restored. The Chamber of Commerce came out to greet us and we felt welcomed by the community. A great stop, beautiful scenery

Great Hospitality, 2016-02-26
Captain: , Tampa, FL (40)

I am a professional Delivery Captain and have passed by here many times. This was my first stop at River Forest Marina.

We arrived in very bad weather, but Henry and Eddie came out in rain gear and assisted us with lines at the dock. They fueled us up and check us in. Henry gave me a tour of the facilities and made us feel at home.

The facilities are new and very clean. Free laundry and golf carts for use to get around! BIG PLUS!

The weather was extremely rough and unfortunately, strong south winds make for a rough ride here. Not the best place to ride out strong southerly or southwesterly winds.

The town and the people here LOVE the boating community and all seem to enjoy having us there. Spoon River Restaurant owned by Theresa treated us like royalty! A great place with wonderful atmosphere and wines.

I WILL come back! Just a little visit here for the people and the community are worth the stop! I just won't choose the spot for a strong south wind!

Great Marina!, 2016-01-31
Captain: , Oreana Idaho (10)

Henry and Eddy are Very friendly, knowlegeable helpful people
Beautiful town, the mansion is amazing!!

Really cool small town marina, 2015-12-20
Captain: , Forked river nj (330)

Very small marina with an awesome staff. Town is a few block walk or you can borrow a golf cart from marina. Very limted cell service and wifi is pretty slow. Downtown is nothing special blink and you will miss it as its very small. Make sure you plan on going to dinner early as "Downtown" closes quite early comapred to bigger citys

Very pleasant suprise, 2015-12-13
Captain: , solomons (69)

It has been 10 years since my last visit. We were delivering a 40' day boat and needed lodging, fuel and a slip. There are beautiful new rooms in the office at the dock. Fuel and alongside tie on the rebuilt dock were very easy.
The old restauraunt is being remodeled into a really impressive wedding and special events venue.
The town hosted us to wonderful restaurants for both dinner and breakfast.
This was the best stop on a great trip.

Great stop, 2015-11-27
Captain: , Naples, FL (20)

I called the number in my Waterway Guide and apparently it was the old owner's number - the new number is 252-943-0030. Henry Boyd is the new owner - the showers are great, the laundry is free, and the machines are brand new, huge and high eficiency, they have gold carts to get into town on, Henry met us at the dock - docks appear to be all new. He couldn't have been any more accomodating, and we are having a great stopover here. Wifi is strong and easy to access. We will stop here on our way north, for sure.

Nice, Convenient and Exceptional Hospitality, 2015-11-20
Captain: , Bradenton, FL (30)

Easy to get into, close to ICW and great views. Staff was very friendly and accomodating. Complimentary golf carts (nice ones) are available to get to town. Fueling and pumpouts can be done right at your slip - it does not get more convenient than that. Also, they do not charge you to do laundry.
I will definitely return on the next trip.

Very Nice Little Marina, 2015-11-20
Captain: , Virginia Beach (230)

This was our first time at this Marina, but we were very happy with our stay. Everyone was helpful, the bathrooms were brand new and clean, golf carts were available for our use, and the wifi was decent.

The highlight of Belhaven was dinner at Spoon River. The meal was outstanding, and the owner could not have been more gracious and accommodating. Make sure she knows you are cruisers. We all had the wine flights...three small carafes of different wines. All very good. After dinner she came by with free homemade gelato for each couple. It was delicious.

Overall, a great stop.

good choice, 2015-11-19
Captain: , annapolis, MD (120)

Under new managemenrt the River Forest Marina is an easy choice. close by the ICW and with loaner golf carts to cover the short distance into town. Dockmastrer was friendly and helpful

Rude and discourtious!, 2015-11-18
Captain: , Apponaug R.I. (778)

We had a reservation here. As we pulled into the assigned slip it became apparent this was not a wood along side slip but a short T head. I would be climbing over the bow to get on the dock. I backed out and called on my cell. I got a very rude response and was hung up on.

Nice Marina, with friendly, helpful staff, 2015-11-13
Captain: , Marina del Rey (60)

We docked at River Forest Marina on a trip north in October. We had an easy time connecting with the marina and got good directions into the channel. The staff was very helpful and were there to help with dock lines. They have fixed docks, so it was not as nice as having a floating dock, but adequate. The marina has a few golf carts for guests to use to drive into town for dinner or to go to the market. That's a nice touch and made staying there convenient. Their fuel and pump out prices were reasonable. Facilities were clean.

River Forest Marina, 2015-11-10
Captain: , Stuart Fl (300)

This marina changed ownership a year ago. We have been coming to this facility since our first trip south in 2009. The new owners arerenovating this facility. The golf carts are new andcan be used for grocery shopping or going into town for dinner. There were lots of boats here. The only issue they haveis water on the docks. Their water system is a long run of garden hose with connectors. It was this way in May also. Six months was not enough time to geta real water systemin place. Welike this stop we weill bebakc andhope to seemore improvements in the future.

a lovely spot!!, 2015-11-09
Captain: , Catskill, NY (10)

Pulled in for fuel and water and everyone was very helpful and accommodating. Easy entrance, great docks and a golf cart to run into town! Someone in Elizabeth City had said to avoid Bellhaven but I am so glad we didn't. Great place to stop!!

small marina, but amazing service and help, 2015-11-08
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (20)

We found that we needed emergency repair on our way south for our first trip to the Bahamas. These folks were not only extremely helpful, but went our of their way to accommodate our needs. It was a Sat. afternoon, and we are a 44 ft boat with a faily deep draft. They helped us get in and tied up and then a gemtlemen named Jim, came to repair a water leak. He worked tirelessly for 2 hours. Leak is fixed! Prices were more than reasonable.
I stronly recommend this marina to anyone traveling the ICW.

I understand that this is new ownership, and that the previous owner was not a nice person. They are still trying to overcome that reputation. Unfortunate because they certainly should not pay for someone else's faults.

New Owners, 2015-11-03
Captain: , Hilton Head, SC (950)

They've apparently been renovating this facility for about one year now. The Dock Master, Henry, was great in guiding us to the dock and getting us tied up and setup. There is water and fuel right at the dock.
The bathrooms were SPOTLESS. They have golf carts for use, but we did not take advantage of those. As well as complementary use of washer dryers. I hope Henry and team succeed in bringing River Forest Manor and Marina back to 100%. Would iike to come back here.

a great place revived!, 2015-11-01
Captain: , Charlotte, vt (20)

Very glad to see all that's been done to restore this special place to its former glory. Easy docking in a great little town. So much fun to take a ride in the complimentary golf cart and see all the lovely houses along the river.

Great Place With New Owners, 2015-10-27
Captain: , Charleston (55)

Was here 10 years ago, decided to give it another try. The owner met us on the dock. Even came back at 7am to return items we left on the golf cart. Go to the Tavern for dinner.....

First stop here, I would come back, 2015-10-26
Captain: , Long Island, NY (204)

Clean facility, loaner golf cart. Newer docks. Reasonable price. Excellent assistance in docking -- the gentleman helping us was Eddie, I believe. I love the town and there are several restaurants and a hardware store within walking distance. Worth a stop.

Woth a stop. Under new management., 2015-10-11
Captain: , Ipswich, MA (162)

Definately a must stop. The new ownership partners are investing considerable time and money to bring this property up to par. Disregard any reviews prior to Nov 2014 as that would be the olden days! The staff are great. The bathrooms are new. The docks have been repaired. The laundry is free with new large machines, 3 wash & 3 dry. The Wi-Fi works perfectly and is the best we have found since leaving Boston. Dockage is $1.50 per foot and they offer a 10% aditional discount wth Boat US.

This property has signifigant historical value and the mansion builing is also being restored by the same partners. The town is alive and well with no signifigant damage after the flooding in early October. Lunch at Spoon River is justification alone for stopping in Belhaven! We will be back.

BTW, Jimmy Buffett stayed here!

Great people, great location, 2015-10-08
Captain: , Charleston, SC (76)

Henry is the dockmaster at River Forest and you couldn't ask to meet a nicer guy. I pulled in with a vicious nor'easter chasing me and even though he couldn't put me up (their docks were flooding) he told me where to go. After the water went down Henry gave me a great rate to tie up while I had some work done on the boat. Downtown is easily within walking distance and the whole town is friendly and helpful in helping you get around.

Excellent Stop, 2015-09-29
Captain: , Jacksonville (90)

Very nice walk into town past pretty turn of the century (20th) houses to a hardware store and the excellent Spoon River restaurant. Even though the weather was worse than marginal, several people stopped to talk to tell us about the town and make recommendations. The marina is well protected and very new and clean. The marina provides golf carts and a free laudry. The Food Lion grocery store is quite a ways off.

Highly recommend this newly refurbished marina, 2015-09-27
Captain: , Fort Pierce City Marina, FL (420)

After bending a prop in the dismal swamp, we came here to get hauled at the River Forest boat yard. Axson & company did an excellent job hauling and swapping props on our 54' Offshore.

Henry, the new marina manager & part owner was extremely helpful at the marina. Docks are great; pumpout is available at your slip; free laundry & golf carts. Also, Boat US discount! We spent 2 nights here waiting out a pretty strong blow. Though we rocked quite a bit, we were secure and well taken care of.

The Spoon River restaurant in town is a must stop. This was one of the best meals we've had in a long time. 5 star food at a reasonable price. Food Lion is easy ride in golf cart for provisions.

Under new ownership, and a must stay!, 2015-08-30
Captain: , Rochester, NY (100)

Apparently this marina changed hands about 1 year ago. We were planning on staying at the free town docks, but changed our minds while getting fuel here.

First there is a nicely marked entrance to the marina with ample water for boats with larger draughts (we draugh 5'2"). They have free laundry (with 3 washer/dryers), and free golf carts that you can take into town.

The marina grounds are a work in progress, but the bathrooms/showers are new, and it seems that there is great potential here.

The town itself also seemed quite nice, and we would definately stop in again.

Under new management, forget what you heard, all new, 2015-08-14
Captain: , Belhaven, NC (12)

I keep my boat here. As an area newcomer, but kicking around docks all my life, this place has been refurbished with new equipment, updated docks, new fuel systems, new loaner golf carts, new laundry, a number of nice downtown restaurants to suit each taste and budget, provisions available, services available, easy access for large as well as small yachts, excellent helpful staff, priced right, I give it 5 and its still improving. I highly suggest checking them out for yourself.

When we passed thru, going south, the new owner was fixing up the place.
Although we only stopped for fuel this time, we love Bellhaven and hope the new owner prospers.

New and excellent showers and laundry, newly refurbished docks, loaner golf carts and a staff that goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome make this inexpensive marina a 1st choice for us.

Stayed here on the 4th of July, great and helpful staff even during one of the busiest weekends of the year.

Dock and approach are easy, showers and facilities top notch.

We will be back soon.

This was our first time to stop here. Lots of good help docking and friendly staff. We enjoyed our walk into the quaint town and enjoyed a fabulous meal at the Spoon River Restaurant. Great place to rest up for the long haul to Coinjock.

Had a great visit, 2015-07-09
Captain: , Grand Haven, MI (674)

Stayed at River Forest Marina during the Fouth of July weekend. Marina is being renovated and coming along very well. Docks are either refurbished or brand new (finished a new dock while we were there) Bathrooms are new and very clean. Laundry is one of the best I've seen with new machines and it's FREE!.
We met some great locals and were helped by Henry and Eddy with anything we needed. We were able to attend a benifit diner for the local Urgent Care Center. The town of Belhaven is trying to survive in hard times.
When I said we met locals we did and they took us around to see their community and give us local knowledge of the area.
If there is a drawback it's if the wind comes out of the south it can get a little rocky at the dock. If possible tie along the main dock and point your nose out to make it a smoother stay. We rocked only a night or two and stayed 8 nights. We will stop back to see how renovations are coming on the old manor house.
River Forest is going to be a destination stop on the ICW

Unassuming Excellence, 2015-07-08
Captain: , Naples, FL (682)

What a place. We planned a stop here for the cheapest fuel between Virginia and Georgia. But it has so much more to offer. Recent imporvements have now made this a first rate easy access stop-over on the ICW. I'd stop just for the laundry!
The fixed docks have been refurbished, the bathrooms are new and air-conditioned and the laundry is the best I have seen in a marina - all new commerical grade equipment in a new air conditioned room and FREE for marina patrons.
Golf carts are available for shopping, eating out or just sight seeing around the beautiful old town with its well appointed homes and gardens.
The manager/co-owner, Henry, was repsonsive, knowledgeable and assisted in every way to make our stay pleasant. We refuelled right at our assigned berth which avoided a second move on a windy day.
All in all, a most enjoyable stay at a wonderful little marina.

Great fuel price, 2015-05-01
Captain: , Erie, Pa. (1896)

New owners & managers and agree they are fixing up the place and sure want to try and make you happy. Diesel was best price between here and FL. Henry (owner/dockmaster) most cordial. Golf cart to town for dinner & shopping. will definitely stop again.

New management and worth the stop!, 2015-04-27
Captain: , Manteo North Carolina (109)

We pulled in to buy diesel and continue north. Had planned to gert up to Alligator River before sunset and anchor out. Henry was very helpful and offered use of one of the marins golf carts to go into town on errands. Post office, propane refill, grocery and drug store all very convenient. Nice quaint town, and several good restaurants. Once we had returned to the marina after the errands, we were convinced we wanted to stay the night. Great shower!

Management is completely reding the marina. While docks are old, they are serviceable. The marina is immediately inside the breakwall and worth a visit!

Work In Progress, 2015-04-14
Captain: , Wicomico Creek, MD (494)

Great stop. New owners are completely renovating marina and manor. New bathrooms and laundry, which is free. Golf cart available to get to nearby town and restaurants. Dockmaster Henry Boyd very courteous and even took us to and picked us up from the restaurant.

THANK YOU HENRY - Will definately return, 2014-12-19
Captain: , Newport (17)

Boat spent the week of Thanksgiving here. We were not onboard from Monday till Friday. When we were there, before and after, Henry and staff were great. While we were not Henry checked our dock lines, etc. While the marina was run down by the previous owner it is rapidly being upgraded - showers were private and good, dock is being rebuilt. We will definately return in the spring and recommend it to all.
THANKS Henry.

New Owners!!!!!, 2014-12-03
Captain: , Belhaven North Carolina (89)

This property has been sold to a group of new owners. as of Nov 2014. They have already done major work to the Dockmasters building, boaters bath building, etc. I have sopken with a number of the new owners, look for exciting things to happen here!

There is hope here!!!!, 2014-12-02
Captain: , Hampton (80)

it is still open or reopening! The word is that a new group has purchaded the marina and the Inn and are making major renovations and upgrades. Great news! I pray that it will be restored to its former glory and exhibit a truly welcoming and concerned customer service. best of luck to y'all . I look forward to meeting you and trust that the five stars will become well deserved.

Is it still open? In disrepair to the point of being dangerous. Rude. Uncaring staff. Avoid!

Needs Repair but has so much character and charm, 2014-10-14
Captain: , Lizella GA (1414)

I was told that the marina was about to be sold to a corporation. This is a great marina to stay at for the price and I hope it is still there the next time I come through. Axson Smith the owner is very friendly and helpful and this marina has such a great history in Belhaven that it would be a great loss to the cruiser community.

If possible, pass this one by!, 2014-08-05
Captain: , Madeira Beach, FL (10)

Axson is a nice and knowledgeable guy. He knows what he's doing in boat handling and TowBoatUS in the Belhaven area. However, this marina should be brought up to standards or dredged over. The docks are last century, the shore power is substandard, the showers are usable if you only rate the water, not the room you have to use and the general appearance of the place shows that nobody cares any longer. Yes, there is a golf cart you can use to get groceries and the townsfolk are friendly but this marina is really out of step with modern boating.

We loved our stay, 2014-06-08
Captain: , catskill (290)

The price was great, the dockmaster was knowledgeable, free golf carts to go get food. The bathrooms are run down, no doubt. However we have all we need on board. For a transiant stay its great. The town is VERY friendly.

Quiet but rundown marina, 2014-05-26
Captain: , Punta Gorda, Fl (880)

Owner and dockmaster Axson was an expert in getting us docked and giving us all the information about the town of Belhaven. There is pump out and fuel but we needed neither.
Bathrooms are rundown, as are the docks. Marina has wifi and electric golf carts to take into town for grocery at the Food Lion. There are 4-6 restaurants in downtown that sound good. Spoon River was our choice and was an excellent gourmet meal. The marina has a brochure to tell you all the eateries, as new ones are opening. We found good ice crream too! If we would return to this area we would choose a newer marina just up the river.

Fuel Notice, 2014-04-12
Captain: , Westport CT (250)

As of October 2011 the marina no longer sells fuel. Cannot locate any fuel in Belhaven Harbor.

A marina and boatyard who's time has past and you should pass it too., 2014-04-07
Captain: , Hampton, VA (30)

I was in this marina and had my boat hauled by the accompanying boat yard. The marina is run down and in poor shape, there are no cleats on the dock and the facility has not really recovered from Irene. It is disheveled and to be honest there are much better options if you are looking for a transient stop. As for the boat yard, they have an excellent mechanic named Timmy but management leaves a lot to be desired. I had my boat hauled to do a simple repair and was handed a bill for almost 900 dollars. I was quoted a price of 8 dollars a foot to hall and launch the 30 foot boat. Once he added all his other charges, a bill that should have been 240 dollars turned into 548 dollars. He charged me 190 dollars for labor to haul and launch and 138 to hang on the sling. I am sure the owner is a fine fellow, and I am just telling my story and letting opinions fall where they may. It is worth noting that once part arrived that the fix was a 15 minute one, and I really did not need to be in the sling to re-stuff the rudder stuffing box.

Excellent mechanic, 2013-11-02
Captain: , Manalapan, N (107)

My raw water pump gave out in the Alligator River canal and I had to be towed back. Bob, the Martina's mechanic, was on the spot first thing in the morning, diagnosed the problem quickly, and ordered a new pump which he installed next day. He was very thorough, knowledgable, and fair on the pricing. The marina is nothing special but the staff is very friendly. Free golf carts will take you into town. The municipal building at the (one and only) traffic light has a map that lists the restaurants, etc. Spoon River Artworks and Market (no art and no market) serves great gourmet food. The two other restaurants are only so-so. A Food Lion a few miles out can be easily reached by the golf cart.

Bad Fuel - Don't Fuel Here, 2013-10-20
Captain: , Vandemere NC (418)

Stopped here going north in September for Fuel. Have fueled here before but never again. Probably got bottom of the tanks, but resulted in engine stopping near norfolk and could not get started again until cleaned out 3 gals of rust particles and debris and polished 30 gals of fuel. Old tanks, not enough fuel pumped, suggest NEVER buy fuel at River Forest, ended up with an $800 disaster. go to Dowry creek instead. Would give it less than 1 star if possible.

Mr. Smith is the area TowBoatUS person, that's where he makes his living, and clamed the "marina" is in such bad shape simply because he cant afford it and will shut it down soon. No laundry. No wi-fi.

River Forest Marina, 2013-06-12
Captain: , Oriental, NC (220)

The location from the ICW is very convenient and the channel(s) are deep and well marked. Sadly, the facility is in a state of disrepair and decline, usable but not a great place to stay. On the plus side, they do have electric golf carts that you can use to get around town.

Maybe in Six Months, 2013-05-16
Captain: , Wickford, RI (550)

Beatiful spot in convenient location with all the basics. Owner let us use golf carts for run into town (very little open on Sundays). But the place has just been sold and little maintenance has been done recently. One bath not working, mold in the only operating bath. Wait to see what the new owner does before stopping.

Pump out doesn't work in the rain, 2013-05-01
Captain: , Bear, DE (230)

We needed a pump out and called River Forest on a Sunday afternoon. We've learned to explicitly ask "Do you have a WORKING pumpout? Is it available?" He assured us that there would be someone to help us on Monday. When we arrived Monday, we were told he can't pump out in the rain "or I'll get electrocuted." Apparently, the equipment is not properly grounded.

Since there had been rain in the forecast, why didn't he tell us that on Sunday on the phone? Would have saved us all the hassle (the dockmaster clearly does not spend all day at the marina, but comes out when needed.)

As another commenter said, this marina is clearly "rode hard and put away wet." And when it's wet, it may actually be dangerous, at least to pump out!

I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 because the fellow was pleasant.

Functional stop, 2013-03-29
Captain: , Stafford, VA (1063)

This is a good place to choose if you need a stop between Beufort and Albemarle Sound, as there usually room available. The staff is helpful and they have loaner golf carts for you to get to town where the restaurants are.

Stopped for fuel, 2013-03-23
Captain: , Palm Coast, Florida (785)

There was no one around when we pulled in here in September. When the owner/manager showed up 20 minutes later he started the diesel pump, but handed me the gas nozzle. Thankfully, the gas pump was off. His comment was " sombody switched the nozzles on me". There were only a couple of boats at the gull dung infested docks.

Passed Her Prime, 2013-01-13
Captain: , Browns Cove, MD (402)

I'm a firm believer in fair reviews so the good is that the dock master was very helpful when we had to dock a 23ft beam cat in 15-20mph side winds. The pilings were beefy and solid and for the most part this marina is protected behind a Sea wall. And, yes, the carts are an awesome convenience and we went into town for a satisfactory meal. The lodge was closed and the restaurant as well and the overall property is in need of repairs and gives the appearance of neglect. But, for a stop when traveling south on the ICW, this was acceptable. Never could get wi-fi though even though they said they had it and gave us the code. I think it was super weak at best.

Only Port in a Storm, 2012-10-21
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (322)

Was not planning to stop in Belhaven in July 1, 2012, but was slammed by a 70 kt Tstorm as I approached the turn in the Pungo River at Belhaven. After waiting for over an hour for the storm to diminish and the winds still over 40 kts I called the River Forest Marina for a berth for the night. Had difficulty contacting them on the VHF because there was an area-wide power outage. The owner and dockmaster were at the berth when I came in a tied up. With the power outage I know they were anxious to get home and take care of whatever was happening there, but they both remained on the dock until I and another boat were secured and safe.
I really appreciated their support on a nasty evening. I will use their services in the future.

Bit rustic, only good for fuel, 2012-10-19
Captain: , Live-a-board (350)

Radio call-in went to the house and info was passed to someone who came to the dock. Not much assistance and when was told we would refuel on port they now wanted us on starboard; point is they were poorly organized and no communication. Wanted me to do impossible things with the boat. Got the fuel, man was nice but the place is not a good place to stop

Stay here if you need a rest after a hard day, 2012-10-02
Captain: , Bear DE (694)

Stayed here for one night. The Dockmaster is very friendly and helpful but the marina is old and overpriced. The only good thing is that you have a Golf cart to go shopping or to a pub. Restrooms are good.

No real opinion, 2012-08-04
Captain: , Va Beach, VA (151)

We pulled in about 11:30 AM, and called to ask about the possibility of tieing up while we had lunch. The answer was that 2 hours was the same price as overnight, even though the slips were all empty. We declined and left.

Charming, rustic, 2012-07-06
Captain: , St. Thomas, USVI (624)

The docks definitely show a long life but are secure and the staff are beyond hospitable. We were there on 4th of July and enjoyed the complimentary golf cart into town where we found a fun festival and then a great fireworks show after dark. Everyone we encountered was a pleasure to meet.

The mansion attached to this property must have been grand in her day. It used to be a bed and breakfast and restaurant, but it looks to have been closed for some time now and is falling into disrepair. It would be a great project for an energetic young couple!

Great spot!, 2012-07-02
Captain: , Williamsburg, VA (200)

Love this stop. I never miss it. It's a little rustic but grab a courtesy golf cart and head in to town and don't miss the little shop called 'Wine and Words'.

Hopefull they are recovering., 2012-05-18
Captain: , Newport (20)

I've stayed there at least 6 times in the last 10 years and the last was 5-5-2012 and have always been treated well. I like the town and the ambience but was disappointed the Inn and restaurant was not open. Don't expect a modern urban marina.

There in a pinch, 2012-05-17
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (2709)

We encountered a nasty line of squalls and decided to end our day here. Dockmaster, Eddie, was very friendly and helpful. The bath/showers were clean enough and very spacious. Docks were solid, but nothing else about the marina will impress anyone. We left early the next day without seeing the town.

Close to Town, 2012-01-17
Captain: , florida (230)

We chose this marina because it's close to town, within walking distance. As it turns out, they'll loan you a golf cart to tool around town in. Very cool.

While this is not a marina for the yachty set, it is perfectly adequate to my tastes. It's well protected behind a seawall, and the docks are rock solid. We docked in 25 knots of wind and the pilings didn't budge.

One star is too much, 2012-01-02
Captain: , Salt Ponds, Va (539)

Beaten bad by Irene, so they say. The entrance is tricky and doing it in the dark is scary. The docks shake and sway as you walk on them. Way over priced at $1.65/foot + electricity. Harbor Master is very friendly and helps when he can. And they do provide that nifty little golf cart (They fixed the breaks). There is no food at the dock, you have to go 1 mile for a resteraunt and 4 miles for groceries, so you need the cart for that.

Horrible... do yourself a favor and avoid, 2011-12-16
Captain: , Oriental, NC (34)

I feel like I'm overrating it by giving it even one star. Dirty, poor facilities... and I was stuck there almost a week due to motor problems. I'll never go back.

Very Basic, 2011-11-13
Captain: , Deltaville VA (140)

Dockmaster is nice. It is NOV but, fuel is all that is available. Pumpout broken, restaurant closed. You can borrow the golf cart. That's it.

Captain: , Chelsea, NY12512 (481)

No groceries unless you pay $10 rental for golf cart to go to town market about 2 miles away. Restaurant and Inn closed. Slips difficult to get in/out in a strong south wind with only one dockhelper available. Internet strong only near office.

very shabby, 2011-06-18
Captain: , NY, NY (104)

This was a great place but has now deteriorated badly. Restaurant/bar is closed, golf carts have no brakes, docks are a wreck. Fuel supply is iffy and pumpout is expensive. On the plus side, it is easy/close to get to from the ICW.

Would Not Stop Here, 2011-05-08
Captain: , Delray Beach, FL (21)

Stopped by River Forest to refuel. Pumped 3 gallons before pump broke. Operator commented the pump was broken again. Agree with others, the marine looks very tired. Even the signage on land is falling apart.

Basic Marina, 2011-05-02
Captain: , Mullica Hill, NJ (688)

We stayed overnight. It has gotten very tired over the years. The help are helpful and seemed to know their stuff. The Manaor and restaurant are closed and no one knows when they willl reopen. They are out of fuel and do not know when they will get more. At $10.00 the pumpout is not cheap, but it is better than the $25.00 the other marina charges.

never again, 2011-02-07
Captain: , millsboro DE (300)

This marina may truly be one of the worst I have visited the staff are helpful but are not the sharpest knives in the drawer they wiull lend you a golf caet to go for groceries at a food lion appx 2 miles from the marina . the problem is it has no brakes. The facilities are marginal at best

River Forrest Ship Yard, 2010-12-07
Captain: , Bear, DE (255)

After hitting a snag in the canal we were towed here. Ship yard a little run down (probably because of surviving several floods) but great technical staff. Repairs took 3 weeks because of delay getting parts. Everyone went over and beyond to ease our pain during this difficult time. We returned home (Phila. area) for Thanksgiving. When we got back boat was ready to go. Mechanic accompanied us for sea trial to assure successful repairs.

Its Day is Almost Done, 2010-12-01

The restaurant is closed. The golf cart is free but has no brakes. Luckily, it doesn't run very well either. Every thing happens in slow motion. A 10 minute pump out took 3 hours.

RESTAURANT/BAR CLOSED FOR SEASON, 2010-11-12
Captain: , Hollywood, MD (142)

Very nice dock hand, about the only positive thing I can say. I called them and asked if they had a pump out and the person on the phone said yes, an hour later we get there and were told the pump out didn't work. Locals stated it hasn't worked for months.

River Forest marina, 2009-10-12

I recommend you avoid this marina. Facilities are dilapidated and operation is living on long past reputation. Entry channel is silted in to 4.5 ft in places.

Very friendly place, 2009-08-04
Captain: , East Greenbush, NY (705)

We stayed here for one night and I'm very impressed with their customer service. On the phone, they were great. Then they had an incredibly well marked channel into their marina. The dockmaster was one of the nicest people I've met along the way, and at dinner the owner stopped by our table to thank us for staying here. The docks themselves are nothing to write home about, but if they aren't floating there's not much of a difference in pilings to me. The bathrooms aren't bad. There are two, each one private, each one with a shower and head, and lots of room. The restaurant was good enough, with a decent selection, and it's nice to have one onsite. They also have free golf carts you can borrow to head to town, including a six person cart. The pool is small but clean. We didn't use the laundry facilities. We never saw anything less than 8.5ft of water.

Very Frendly, 2009-07-08
Captain: , New Bern NC (47)

The dock hand was very frendly and helpful. Docks leave something to be desired. The restaurant was OK but nothing outstanding. We were there for the Forth of July festivities and they were great. Love the small town.

Marine Max pulled it off., 2008-03-09
Captain: , Atlantic City, NJ (76)

Quaint small marina with friendly staff (family owned), anyone can have a bad experience at any marina. Having said that we stayed as part of the Marine Max migration North in spring. Leim had a pig roast with all the trimmings for us and it was just a great time. The golf cart to town was a welcome break after a day on the water. Maybe latch on to a Marine Max excursion and you will see some of these places in a different light.

Nice Stopover for Nitro Freedom 30, 2008-01-16

Not sure what everyone is looking for in a stopover but my son and I had a wonderful experience. Coming in later at night the dockmaster was there lending us a hand and even gave us his truck to make a late evening run for food and diesel oil. How trusting can you be?
