Reviews for RAM Marina
Ram Marina and Boat yard, 2015-01-26
Captain: , New Bern, NC. (801)

Capt. Charles Freeman did a good review on Ram Marina. We were on the hard for a month of October 2014. Had some work done. Karen, the manager is very knowledgeable of boat work and what the job entails. She tries to give a time frame for the job but it will depend on the people who does the job and their work load. I was impressed with the yard and haul out facilities, better then the ones I used in the USA.

Be advised, the closer to cruising season the harder to get work
done and haul and launch schedules met.

Doing a job that was quoted for one month... They have a competent Awlgrip painter named Henry who will do the best he can considering they don't have a proper paint shed and it rains all the time. He is a perfectionist and will keep redoing it until it comes out right. They have a reasonable mechanic for doing things like servicing prop shafts and cutless bearings, but they have no machine shop, engine shop or welder, and only basic carpentry services. They can sand blast bottoms and do good bottom and blister repair. They do good fiberglass work. Make sure you get a fixed priced quote before any work and they will honor the quote in dollars, but not in time; they haven't a clue how to estimate total time in the yard correctly as they are always taking your workers away and putting them on other jobs, so you must be a squeaky wheel and supervise your own job. It really helps to be fluent in Spanish for this, as only the American owner and the marina manager speak English, and the manager (Karen) is very, very busy. Be sure to track your own electrical meter readings. In our case they read the meter for 24 hours and tried to extrapolate for five months! Not good. They have a new marine store which carries a good selection of West Marine items at a significant markup from US prices. They have a convenience store with a good selection of drinks and light cafe fare at slightly higher prices than town. They have excellent free wifi, hot showers but no pool, but you can walk next door to the pool at Nana Juana for the price of a drink. They have limited dock space but it is good quality side ties and secure with free drinking and separate washing water. They have good security using both guards and cameras. Town is a cheap Tuktuk ride away.

They take excellent care of your boat keeping it clean and aired out when you are not here. They have a large concrete working yard so things stay pretty clean as yards go. However they are happy to spray paint the boat next to you paying only lip service to where the overspray goes, so be careful and keep an eye on all work yourself. Just remember you're in Guatemala despite all the US trappings and keep smiling, you'll get out of here eventually.

We didn't stay here but we took on the 1400 gallons of fuel. Call ahead and negotiate the price between marinas. You'll be surprised at what they will do. They take US credit cards and are a full service marina with a nice store.
