Attractions

There is a hike up Steinbeck Canyon. Take the road out away from the marina and cross the main road, then continue walking up the road until you reach the end of the road. Head up through the canyon wash.D o not hike when rain is forecast because the trail is the drainage for the canyon.

Reviews for Puerto Escondido - Fonatur
This is not Fonatur anymore, 2016-08-02
Captain: , Basilea (20)

The marina complex was bought by a foreign private company July 2016. They raised the prices almost 40% right at the start of hurricane season. No visible improvment, however, they say they are commitet to make this to the best and most luxurious marina of Mexico........well - future will show but it's going to be expensive, I'm afraid. Check out prices before going there...

Good anchorage or moorings, 2015-12-23
Captain: , San Diego, CA (1239)

We visited when we had a poorly running outboard motor. I decided to anchor close to the dinghy dock. Price is the same to anchor or take a mooring. Carole's Tienda is a good place to get basic staples.

Getting Better and Better, 2013-06-09

This is our third year visiting Escondido. Pedro's super mini and PortaBella resturant make living easy. He has expanded to include an ATM, WiFi, Propane and small quantities of fuel (15 gallons or so), as well as just about anything you need to provision. Escondido has just added another 15 or 20 slips (www.marinapuertoescondido.com) which are not associated with Fonatur, but the facilities are co-located.

Great place to stop, shop and then POP back out to the islands.

Puerto Escondido Fonatur, 2013-04-11
Captain: , Kirkland, WA (4478)

This is our second time here, having stayed in Nov '12 as well. Both times staying for several days on a buoy. Beautiful location with great views east and west to the morning lit Sierra de la Gigante mountain range. It's a great place to hangout for a while and enjoy the very good food at the restaurant located in the Fonatur building. Or take a taxi ride the 12 miles or so into the town of Loreto. The well-protected harbor is also excellent for holding-up to wait out weather. There's a small store in the Fonatur building that has a surprisingly good selection. And a good VHF net at 8am keeps everyone informed. The addition of 26 slips in March 2013 now gives you another option. It's a fairly standard cookie-cutter Fonatur marina with the same not always the best maintained showers, unpredictable water availability, and unpredictable fuel/gas availability. If fuel is not available at Fonatur gas dock there is reportedly trucked-in fuel available, ask on the VHF net.

Hurricane hole, 2012-10-19
