Reviews for Puerto Deportivo Gijon
Only 15 amp electric, 2016-07-23

Everything about this place is great except the elecricity. The WiFi did work when we were here. The town is fantastic. It isn't a town really, much more of a city with 275,000 inhabitants. If you are coming from the Med or Portugal, the 11' tides are a wake up. As of this writing, the Navionics chart has the sea wall completely wrong. It has been extended another 300 meters and in heavy fog, the chart would have you run into the extension. Otherwise, from the west, the approach is simple a straight southerly course once past the sea wall.

Equipment failure due to weather worse than forecast had us divert to Gijon disrupting a passage from La Rochelle to A Coruńa. November is a bad time of the year to be caught in any port on the north coast of Spain unless you are trying to go east. We have been here two weeks already and look like being here another week yet before there is a weather window.
We have been made very welcome here. from the visit by the customs official when we arrived to the marina staff to the locals. all very friendly and will find a way of communicating with you in English even if they don't speak it themselves.
our biggest frustration is the WiFi. I'm not sure that the problem rests with the marina as the information centre, also located at the marina is marked on the local maps as a WiFi hotspot is also down. This is a big problem when it is your main form of communication wih the world, access to forecasts etc. We have resorted to visiting local bars and cafes offering wifi - OK for iPad and laptop but useless for onboard computer, streaming videos etc.
Approaches are clear and well marked. There is an arrivals area on the port side of the entrance. very easy to get into at night time.
There are some parts of the marina that are a little exposed to swell as we found out one stormy night but the staff are very willing to help you shift pretty much anywhere you want.
The marina is right down town so there is easy walking access to shopping for food or just about anything you want. A small chandlery shop close by seems to be able to get just about anything you need overnight if they don't have it on the shelf.

Welcomed at entrance and taken to fuel, then assisted to visitors berths. Plenty of room for visitors. Good communication in English. Good security gates, when locked. No internet when we were there, but assured fix tomorrow! Very shallow entry to marina on springs and marina also, be careful to follow chart.
