Reviews for Portsmouth Olympic Harbour
needs some TLC, 2016-08-28

As others have noted this facility is showing its age. You can try requesting a dock along the breakwall or one of the dock walls, which are a nicer tie-up than the floating wooden docks. Water and power service is good.
Beyond the general age of the facility the care and cleaning could be improved. The tunnel to the washrooms is dirty and used as a garage by the city and it would also appear as a sometimes workshop by the instructional sailing ship stationed in the harbour. The men's washroom has a communal shower, the ladies separate stalls. During CORK activities (most of August) the washrooms are overtaxed and filthy. This year several days passed between any sort of cleaning in either the combo-lock controlled washrooms or the main building washrooms. They were quite disgusting. There are better options at Confederation Basin and KYC, or Collins Bay if being in-town is not a priority.

A good place for checking-in, 2016-08-09

Good reservation system on-line, but they also if possible accomodate people that haven't yet paid the slip fee ahead. Yes, staff are college students but nice and willing to help. The facilities are good and clean. The tunnel to the rest rooms were not a problem and the facilities were in good condition, clean, and nice with multiple toilets and showers. It was the closest marina coming across Lake Ontario at 59 miles, 7 hours from Oswego, and as easy as any for a telephone check-in with the Canadian Customs. There's a sailing school, so it was easy to see the entrance with small sail boats coming and going. Yes, the entrance is narrow but visability of going and coming boats is good. The docks are in good condition and everything works well. The scenic appearance and feel of a one time Olympic site is good and appealing. Now that we've come into Canada by this route, next time we'll plan better, and stay in Kingston longer with a more economic way to see the area. The Wi-Fi worked well, however we don't typically watch movies via Wi-Fi.

Expected a Lot More, 2016-08-01

When I reviewed this Marina on their website, I took it as a more upscale Marina. The only reason I chose this Marina was due to having a booked tour for the Kingston penitentiary and wanted to work it into a planned sailing trip.

I called on arrival and expected to see a dock hand. Although well-staffed with what appears to be University students - as was later observed - the reason for the non-existent help while docking was now understood.

Washrooms, as noted previously, were down a dark tunnel and quite out-dated -- reminds me of the old military base gym facilities.

Docks -- I was assigned a wall deep into the Marina ("D Wall"). Water/Power/Cleats all in good order and the height of the wall made easy entry/exit to the boat (I have a Hunter Legend 35.5 sailboat).

Bottom Line -- this place doesn't hold a candle to Collin's Bay Marina when using this as a standard regarding attentive dock stewards, washroom facilities, docks, BBQ areas, and grounds. It is a typical City-run outfit that, along with no security and open to the public, makes you concerned if you wish to leave your boat for any appreciable time in the evening without ensuring that it is all properly secured ( not ideal in 30 degree temps).

Won't be coming back unless absolutely necessary.

OK place to stay, 2016-07-04

Had planned to leave the boat for 2 weeks so made reservations in advance. Have to sign a contract. We arrived 2 days earlier than planned and that was no problem. We encountered some engine problems on the way and were not going to be able to stay as planned. Had to go to a different facility for service the next day. They require 7 days notice for cancellation and they stick to it! Was able to cancel the second week but was told that they would continue to charge us for each night of the first 7 of our reservation that they could not rent the slip to someone else. Since the marina has many empty spaces, I am sure the slip we rented will remain open for the full 7 days. Lesson learned. Don't commit so far in advance. Of course we aren't there, so how would we know anyway. The transient dock is very exposed and the one night we stayed was rocking and rolling. Fuel dock is easy access and staff there very nice and helpful. If you are going to stay a while, try to get a slip further inside.

Went in to get fuel and spent one night. Staff were very good but somewat hampered by obvious city bureaucracy. Even though there are lots of empty slips, officialdom won't let you use them unless you take one long term, hence rolly slip at entrance, and rotten dock that I fell through. Will go back again, but mostly if I need fuel, and to go to Portsmouth pub, great draft beer and pub grub.

Marina is Showing its Age, 2011-05-11

This facility can be busy in mid summer since it hosts the CORK regatta. Docks are older but there is often space here when Confederation Basin is full. Is not close to city centre as is Confederation Basin.

A more quiet alternative, 2009-07-06
Captain: , Miami Beach, FL (274)

Nice enough marina--- (didn't use shoreside bathrooms)-- but not such a zoo as Confederation Basin. Very quiet. And yes, the penitentary view is lovely! We were confirmed for a slip over the phone, which is a big plus. Correct phone number is 613-546-4291...and we got an actual person!

Will do in a pinch, 2008-09-16

Recommend one of the other marinas if you can, this one is getting old. Transient dockage is on a long wall which is open to the lake. Until the boat traffic slows down in the evening, it is a rocking, rolling stay. Showers are large and clean but accessed through a dark, out of the way tunnel. (Ladies might not feel too comfortable). Beautiful view of the penitentiary. ;-)
